UK Style VIP Aristo Project Thread

Thought i'd post up my build thread here as well as in the Intro forum.
 
My name's Lam (funnily enough) and I hail from London, UK. VIP style is completely new in the UK, but I've been closely following the trends that Japan and the US have been offering. Of course, what I'll do is take the best bits of UK auto styling and mix it up to create something unique...hopefully! 
 
My car will be the first VIP style car in the country and because of that I've already had offers to feature the car. I'm hoping to get onto the front cover of Max Power.
 
The car in question is a JZS161 Toyota Aristo, a rare car in itself! I bought it from Phil Morrison, the guy who runs Driftworks.

Since then i've added a whole lot of stuff, mainly VIP stuff from Garson/D.A.D, so i've got a lot of interior stuff such as the front table for the passenger, curtains all round, leather covered memory foam neck pads and such. 
 
Chrome bits that have been added are Junction Produce pillar trims, which make a HUGE difference to the car. I've also added chrome door handles and a chrome boot garnish. 
 
Then I managed to get some Garson Zuenglein DR 302's in chrome in some real "manly" specs.
 
18" x 10" ET 10 on the front
19" x 12" ET -6 on the rear.

He will be fabricating the rear arches out of steel, and they will follow the factory lines and will look something like this...

I went to see the car today, and the front arches are nearly ready for paint. It turns out that with the amount of repainting and fibreglass repairs required, I might get the car fully resprayed. 
 
We're thinking that she's going to stay black, but with a little bit of metalflake to bring some sparkle in.

I wanted to post about the tyre stretch i've got on the back. If anyone wants to know, its 275/35/R19 on the 12" rim. 
 
We're going to put in a bar in the back as well for the passengers. The rear armrest is going to be modified to be like the front (so it opens up). It'll house a couple of champagne flutes un a bed of velvet and will light up. We''ll do something to make the front and rear armrests flow into each other, as there is a "gap" where the transmission tunnel runs.

Someone take this guy out of vip-in-training already. I think he could school us some.

first off the car is amazing.. the stance before the new garson wheels was already awesome but now adding the "manly" spec wheels to the car = insanely awesome..

and from a photographer's standpoint, i wish we had buildings in california like that to do a car photoshoot like that.. is that a parking lot (car park in UK english right?) or just a random building you found?

The building is actually Driftwork's warehouse and office. They had all manner of quality metal in there...They had there Silvia S15 (arguably the best drift S15 in Europe) , JZX100 Chaser, and R32 GTS-T and a mountain of tyres waiting to be shredded...

hmmm...... giving me some ideas of my own. good ideas for the UCF10 that i want as well as my 06 tacoma build. i know, it's not VIP. i'm just taking what i can and leaving the rest. the only parts i'm leaving behind are the finish of the wheels (solid black) and the use of a traditional platform. other than that, i'm taking it all and applying it to my truck. suspension, stance, body cues (making my own body kit since none are out there), exhaust styling, wheel specs (offsets and staggered fitment), interior stylings, window curtain, and anything else i can take. sorry if any of my stuff offends. i'm a mini trucker w/ a VIPCAR heart. but yeah, this is a very nice build. i'm impressed

Work on the rears is set to begin over the weekend. Once Will is happy with his mockup, then he will start to cut some steel to build those wide arches...

Look how fat those wheels are!
 
Once the rear arches are complete and Will is happy with them, we will be creating molds of the rear overfenders, and will produce an off the shelf product that we KNOW is a perfect fit on the JZS161 Chassis and for any wheel 19" wheel with a super aggressive offset. Bear in mind i will NOT be running an aggresive camber setup, just to show off Will's workmanship. So by my calculations, you could easily run a 13" wide wheel with negative offsets by dialling in a bit of negative camber. 
 
I've been told that i could be looking at all bodywork complete (before paint) by the end of next week =)

funny you mention this.  I was looking at a tacoma the other day and thought that it would look sick with some nice stance and fitment.  but I was looking at like a 90's one.  the real minitrucks.

the Lam. The car is sick.  I prefer stupid rediculous camber on cars but i like the way the widebody is coming out.

I'm on coilovers for the time being. Would love some airbags or hydraulics but this exceptional bodywork is cleaning me out!

that's nice work. This is prob how I would do wide wheels instead of rolling and possibly messing the fenders up and having a ton of negative camber. Makes it more practical and real comfortable for daily driving if you want to drive it all the time. Can't wait for this to be finished. The front fenders look real nice and I love how this shop does their work, very effective way to see the outcome before its done and to see how the wheels fit. A little camber would look nice on the car and its nice you doing the fenders for others when you are done, someone will just use them and slap 14 inch wheels on a GS with crazy camber.

More updates from yesterday (7/4/09) 
After taking the necessary measurements from our cardboard template, we cut out both sides in 22swg steel.

We also added some cardboard ribs to the centre of the arch to give us the desired amount of flare.
The steel sheet was then temporarily fixed in place to allow us to measure up for the other steel pieces needed to be cut.

In order for the the body to sit low enough with the wheels on, the factory arch has to be cut to allow for more clearance. Note the steel "ribs" that will hold the shape of the new arch.

Outstanding work - it seems to be coming along really well.  I will definitely check back for updates and pictures.  Big props, as well, on getting the nuts to run those offsets, and then modify the car to go along with them.

the body work is definitely top notch, i'm just getting a kick out of watching fenders being put to work and all the fabbing.

Thanks for all the updates.  I love seeing the process.  Looks like everything is being done right, planning, mock ups, the attention to detail is meticulous.  Can't wait for the finished product, but also look forward to see the progress.

Update from the Streetoptions website today (18/4/09)
With this being a Four Door vehicle, It does complicate fabrication a touch.
It was then necessary to form and weld two pieces of sheet to follow the shut lines of the rear door and quarter panel.
These will eventually form our returns, visible when the rear doors are open.

The next stage is to begin to form the Inner Arch Returns, These will bridge the void between the original quarter panels and our new flared quarter panels.
They also taper upwards towards our cut back arch, Allowing the Wheel Rim to run close to the quarter panel, while the stretched tyre resides within the arch return, with plenty of clearance.

Before the new quarters can be welded to the car, They will be fully welded from the inside, allowing the outside wheel arch to be grinded down to a small bevel edge that resembles the factory wheel arch returns.
Two small returns need to be fabricated for the areas where the quarter panels meet the Rear Bumper and Sideskirts.

A few more pics. I got sent these this morning (25/04/09) but I'm pretty sure they are from Wednesday when I last saw him. His note in the email said that he had completely finished welding the entire arches and he was going to finish off the arches with some filler before priming them, so expect a complete rear arch picture early next week!

These pictures are definately over a week old as I saw the car on Wednesday 29th April, and there was fibreglass applied to the rear arches so that he could sand them into shape...but I digress!

Yes, as it is modelled on the factory bodyline. As mentioned above, fibreglass will be used to form the final chape of the arch and blend it into the stock bodywork.

craftsmanship looks great still.
 
for the sake of playing computer chair builder, as it's coming together it's starting to look a little [I]too[/I] technical. i saw it a little in the front but the flare was small enough that it wasn't really obvious. on the rear, since everything is more exaggerated you notice it more. couple things that are catching my eye are:
 
1) the center section where the strips were used as spacers looks a little squared out. i think 2 strips would have givin better results.
 
2) the top plate looks very horizontal. i think he should have brought the inner edge up as far as he brought the outer edge out to retain a more factory looking slope. it looks like he had a line there early on, i wonder why he didn't run with it. probably should have done the rear first and matched the front to it, rather than vice versa.

i have to agree, the step-out of the flare is very aggressive esp compared the the rounded overall shape of the 2gs. but, well crafted and keen to see it progressing more, once painted it may well bring it together

Clean work

The step out of the flare is, indeed, very aggressive. However, we decided to go down that route because the shape of the new flare/arch, is exactly the same as the factory arch of the bodywork, but just 50mm wider. It currently looks quite "extreme" at the moment, but when painted up, should be blend in more from a visual perspective.
 
For a comparable sort of arch on a different car, the hawkeye Subaru Impreza has a similar sort of arch on the rear.
 
I did not want to go for a rounded arch on the rear, as it doesn't actually flow with the factory swage line and would have made the rear of the car far too bulbous. I've seen many 1st Gen GS's with the massive smooth rounded overfender and it just would not have suited the lines of the 2nd gen chassis. 
 
In addition, I wanted people to be able to see the extra work that had been put into the car to fit the wheels on. If it had been an ultra subtle arch extension, then people would most likely be oblivious to the size and quality of the wheels. After all, isn't VIP about grabbing peoples attention, and then waving a stack of cash in their face? (lol)

Rear calipers are JZA80 Supra calipers.

The rears don't look quite as aggressive and "in your face" now that they are in primer and have been shaped and smoothed.

man i hate to say it, but you need to redo the rears before you waste time/money painting. i know you wanted to keep tyhe stock lines but you cannot adjust the x axis and not the y. yeah, it's wider but it looks like a shelf.

I understand your idea and your view, but by doing that, your "Y-axis" extension is now too much for the "X-axis". It also is too rounded for the shape of the car as well, and it just reminds me of the blister style overfenders.
 
The top bit of the arch is also not as flat as you suggest too. It is at around 60 degrees, so not that flat. 
 
When it gets painted black, visually, the step will seem less as well.
 
Cars that we researched before carrying out the work with similar rear arches were as follows: 
 
The Horsepowerfreaks M3 Turbo, Top Secret V12 Supra, Hawkeye Subaru Imprezas with wide arches, and multiple wide arch Mitsubishi Evo VIII's and IX's.

WOW !! Amazing work and I can't wait to see the finished car but the cars you researched on are coupe&hatch cars and Impreza&Evo have rally and off-road back ground with smaller 4-door car so totally different than GS but power to you for being different and your craftsmanship.

Well it has certainly come a long way from that.

I went down to the workshop to see her and to be honest, she looked like a sorry state! 

Headlights, front bumper, front wings, outer lower door panels and rear lights were off.

Bonnet has been keyed and small dents patched up. Drivers side door had a few pinhole dents smoothed out and is prepped for paint. 

All the window trim was off, including the stainless steel pillar trims. Rear windows were out ready for tinting. 

The door cards are off, and so were the rear seats. 

But what looked good were the sideskirts and rear bumper are now all inline with the new arches and it really does look like it came from the factory like that. The pictures of the arches above just do not do the car justice! 
 
I've spoken to Will about a date for finishing the project and the next big show coming up (we missed JapFest last weekend) is JapShow on the 21st June, so i've got my fingers crosssed for then!
 
Oh and the paint options are as follows:
 
Metallic Black
Kandy Black
 
with either a gold pearl or blue pearl on top
 
or gold or silver metalflake.

A candy black with a blue pearl top would be pretty impressive.

Just a brief update from Will:

He decided that the stock indicators on the wings, and any aftermarket replacements would just not cut the mustard for the look that we were going for. So he sourced some Audi A8 LED indicators and modified the wings to fit them. He was saying something about creating a bevel edge so that it would sit flush and look really smart.

He has also removed the inner LED rear lights from the bootlid and smoothed them over. This look really does change the rear of the car. Not many people have done it, but I've seen a picture of one and it does catch your eye!

The car will be fully prepped in the next week (how long have I been saying this?! lol). I an going to see him as he will paint some test cards for me this evening so I can look at some different colours. 

We have 3 weeks on Saturday before the 1st major show of the year (Japshow, since we've missed Japfest) . I've resigned myself to the possibilty that only the exterior will be finished by then and I will not have my fridge/rear cabinet ensemble ready by then, but heres hoping!

I dunno man.  The inner lights make the tail end of that car.  Now they're gone...
 
Well I guess I'll just look forward to someone actually getting a project complete now because it really isn't anything I'd do or like.

dunno man but those tail lights always remind me of cheap altezza/IS...
it definatly makes a difference when they are gone!

Cant wait to see the final outcome. Deleting the inner lights is a cool mod, and you are right it totally changes the rear of the car. A few cats in Japan are doing it and i love it!
 
Keen to see how the fenders look with paint. I think at the start you mentioned that you arent keen to run camber on the car, but i think it would really set off the extreme flares and body mods. Its obvious money isnt really an issue here so spending a bit extra on tyres every 6 months shouldnt be too difficult...

 uhm....Which car was designed first?  If anything the Inner tails made the Altezza more luxurius looking since they took that design element from the Aristo lol.

The bootlid is just a mockup as you might see some ripples where the lights used to be. I'm also keeping the spoiler off. I also now know why the arch follows the line that it does, as opposed to the suggestion that BlkonBlk made. There are 2 factory swage lines that run straight on the body. The new arch emulates these straight lines, so now it looks like I have 3 swage lines. Making it more bulbous ruins the factory lines completely. As does putting the spoiler back on.

I picked the colour yesterday, and its a lovely colour. Nothing too garish of course, but I'm not going to let anyone in on the colour until its on the car. Needless to say, its got a strong pearl in it, and just enough metalflake to be a show winning car, but not be too outlandish ;)

In all honesty, we're very close to getting the car being finished. I am trying to get some sponsorship from a few companies to provide me with some big brake kits (Front and Rear) and some air suspension and then the car would be "truly" finished. 
 
But if it doesn't come through in time ( and lets face it, it probably won't in the next 12 days!) then I will revert to my original plan of keeping my JZA80 Supra brakes on with a crazy metalflake finish on them, and winding the coilovers down to the max when we get to the show paddocks.

I'll keep and eye out for you bud.  Have you posted any pic's up at the UK LOC site?

Will will be making moulds of my bodykit and it will be available for sale. It is a modified version of the Vertex kit and won't cost as much for people based in the UK and Europe since you won't have to wait ages for shipping and pay through the nose for customs, taxes and shipping!

We don't really have a great deal of good car magazines over here in Australia. The big ones are pretty much Fast Fours (it does all different cars though including 6s and rotaries), Hot4s (again, does 6s and rotarys too), Auto Salon and High Performance Imports.
 
Really those are it. The first two are usually the 'hot hatch' type cars, though Fast Fours isnt too bad for some more interesting rides. Auto Salon is all the fancy show cars obviously, as Auto Salon is a big car show franchise. High Performance Imports is obviously just that, import cars from drag to drift and in between. Though it has featured JZS16 Aristo's in the past even though they were technically locally delivered here in Aus.

Lam, i would look at wiring up 2 switches for the lights; with each switch lighting up every second light. 5 lights per side can even look too much on some cars; 10 lights will probably just end up looking like a solid beam of light and it will lose the distinct single spot effect that they should have.

I will definately take everyones comments on board. In the video it doesn't seem as though they'll merge into one beam of light, but in another picture I've seen of a White Aimgain kitted JZS160, it only has 4 lights, but they're almost as one!.

Masking up the newly painted shuts and hanging the doors to make sure that everything opens and closes properly...and masking the newly painted bits means only one thing...Exterior painting is next!
 
I spoke to Will earlier today and he's going to spend the next day or two wet sanding and flatting all the panels. He hopes to have painted the car by Sunday. Its getting tight for time but we have contingency plans in place for all the little touches for Japshow. What I can tell you now is that the car will be fully complete for JAE at very least!!

I am currently fretting over many things at the moment and that is that we might not get it finished for Sunday. One wheel needs to be refurbished and we don't seem to have time to get it done ourselves. So far I've been quoted 7-10 days turnaround for the one wheel I need done! I am really going to struggle finding anything else :/

So I need this wheel done and the end result is that the car will not be complete on the 21st June. I have another show due on the following Sunday, so we are now aiming for that date.
 
I was on the phone for a good hour today phoning untold amounts of companies who "refurbish" wheels. Half of them can't do split rims, the other quarter didn't do three piece split rim wheels, and the rest couldn't do it in a quick enough timescale. 
 
I found one person who could do what I wanted (straighten out a small kink in the dish, remove the kerbing scratches and polish up the dish to a mirror finish) and they were in WALES. That is like one of you guys in the US having to send your wheel from the west coast to the east coast to get it done! I had no choice so the courier was arranged to pick up the wheel tomorrow. 
 
The rest of the car is being painted tonight as I type this. I also had to buy the entire rear suspension set up off of a GS to sort out this alignment problem I have on my car (it was an accident repaired car) and this problem has only manifested itself now as Wills work has uncovered inherent underlying issues. 
 
I am holding my breath to see if a miracle occurs in the next 10 days.

Well, it's not that drastic, let me assure you.  London to Wales is about 4 and a half hours of road time.  San Francisco to Washington D.C. is about 41 hours of road time.  In comparison, going from London to Wales is about as long as going half way from the Northern border of California to the Southern border of California.

Once the new suspension components arrive then we'll have a play around with the settings. Some negative camber would look good, but I would probably readjust it for daily driving after shows, tyres aren't cheap!

I actually purchased the Garson wheels back in December and didn't receive them til March, so in all honesty, this project has been on the go for 6 months, haha! 
 
In regards to cost and the exchange rate, the usual cost of a full colour change for a fairly straightforward colour is about £2500 which is about $4000 and you can double that for anything like a Kandy paint job. What is the usual rate for a respray in the US?

$4k is pretty dam good for that much well though metal work and full color change.

It all depends on where you get it painted. Places with higher rent costs like NYC, LA, Hawaii will usually pay much more for a quality paint job then a paint shop in parts of the rural areas. $4,000 at a quality shop in NYC would be a same color respray without door jams or engine bay. Some parts of the country will do the engine bay, door jams, and trunk for less then that because their monthly bills and operating costs are much lower.

Er, just to let you know that price is [B]just[/B] for the respray...The metalwork and all the other work would come to a much higher cost!

Puddle lights installed and being tested. The wiring will be as such that the 5 below the drivers side door will turn on when the drivers side door is opened, and the rear 5 puddle lights will only turn on when the passenger doors open. As you can see, there are no concerns about the lights merging into one beam of light and losing the spot light effect. I will also have an override switch to keep them all on as well.

I will now be premiering the car at Ultimate Street Car (yes, chavfest, but a busy show) on Saturday 1st August and at the Dorset Japanese Car Club show on Sunday 2nd August. Unfortunately, I won't actually be there, but Will will be showing the car for me, and I'm sure he will do a good job of it!

There is all sorts of pearls in there, red, blue, green and gold off the top of my head, as well as lots of XR-10 metalflake as well!

Wow that be a lot of puddles you got there.  But I think that it looks very nice.  Instead of just having the 5 open with the fronts and 5 open with the rear, why not just have all 10 light up regards less of which doors are opened?  Just think that it would look better will all lit up.  Just my .02 cents.

But other than that I am very impressed.  The color looks really good.  Can't wait to see the car completely put together and photos taken in the Sun.  I am sure that these "teaser" shots don't do the car justice.  Much Props.

i dont think it was very VIP before- some random full face 19s and a vertex kit isnt vip to me. i think Lam has taken it to the next level for sure, custom metal widebody and deep dish rims is pretty vip!
 
finish looks awesome, shiny as heck! love the brown/gold tinge to the colour, i would love my car that colour without the other pearls. Looking forward to completed shots with clean shiny wheels & tyres too!

I thought 10 puddle lights were going to wash out, but it turned out really nice.  Everything is turning out really nice as a matter of fact.  Can't wait to see the finished masterpiece!!

They did a great job with the car.  It is nice to have a well excecuted plan come out the way you had it in your mind.  Now lets get some more pics

For anyone thinking of wiring puddle lights into the existing wiring loom on the JZS16x, it is a complete ballache to do so. Something about an seperate lighting ECU or something that won't letyou integrate anything into the system. Will had to create a custom wiring loom hooked up to the vehicle battery involving some extra doorpins to allow the lights to light up when the doors opened. 
 
The car has been invited (despite the fact it wasn't finished at the time!!) to Wembley stadium to be on display at the Driftworks stand at JDM Allstars Round 3, a big drift event this Sunday (26th July) so some complete shots will be in the works...Stay tuned!

Chrome door handle. Now the reason for this is because I bought some from Elite Auto Style and they were supposed to be a fairly straightforward swap (from a Toyota Crown IIRC). The fronts were easy, but the rears required some decent work on them to fit the locking mechanisms!

I take all your comments on board about it needing to be lower. I know it will look the dogs bollocks with it being 25mm lower but realistically, I cannot drop it any further without ruining the aero on every speed bump I come across! 
 
The next step will be airbags, but at this moment in time, after the cost of this project, that will have to wait a little while! 
 
I pick up the car tonight and already have Tyre Shine back in the garage so that will get applied this week. I will re install the curtains, chrome pillar trims and window spoilers as well.
 
This weekend I will go into London and get some pro night shots taken of it...

The handles, the rears never fit straight out, its a 98 car thing. theres loads of topics on CL about it. When i did mine i just had to bend the metal tab bit, was quite simple really and they work fine. But your way is more hardcore if you want to go that way :D
 
i have to say, i really dont like the polished rear trim..sortof looks out of place to me.
 
the wide body and colour looks great though, as others say once you get the back down and camber it possibly a bit more itll be real nice.

I really liked how you kept the rear fender lines. I enjoyed the 11 pages of stages of the build too. Any plans for any dress up work in the engine compartment?

I think Will is pretty much sick and tired of working on the car! But there are a few things to do before the next show on the 6th September. He will spray all the brake calipers in a rainbow metalflake lacquer as well as a few underbonnet bits...so a week prior to that, he will take the car back into the shop!

I love this widebody. It looks so much more well done than just cambering the wheels like crazy. And it keeps the factory lines. Those chrome handles are a bitch to install in the rear. I had to wrap the tab in a lot of electrical tape so it would open better.

I've got Max Power lined up next Wednesday, Autosalon (Australia) next Wednesday, Import Tuner are very interested, as well as numerous European publications as well.

She is currently in the hands of my mechanic getting a full service, cambelt change , lots of pipes being polished...and the small matter of a single turbo conversion...pics up as they arrive!

This car so clean! Maybe even too clean for Max Power..which has turned to pure shit over the years. Back in like 2000 they were great but now its like their mag consists of 95% ricer features and picturs of skank bad-body bitches with their a-cup tits all out.  

i can def see this car in Import Tuner and Auto Salon though. Definitely in the VIP style mags. But Any exposure really is good for you, i guess, right?!

make sure that manifold gets reinforced and you should be good.  I believe there use to be a problem with XS manis cracking.

The manifold seems ok, but i'll get some bracing and supports welded on to it to help support the weight of the turbo. All manifolds can crack if not supported propertly whether its a £250 one or a £1000 one!

So as we're now waiting on parts to come from places far and wide, he got it off the jacks and carried on with the rest of the service.

Tomorrow and Friday should see the back broken of the custom work such as downpipe, oil drain, screamer pipe, coolant line for the heater matrix feed. Then it can all go back to together. The compressor housing is being polished also, but can only be done last, due to the amount of handling the turbo will be having.

As this car is a JDM Toyota Aristo, the 2JZ-GTE is the STANDARD engine found in this car. I am just tuning what I was given! =)

Keen eyes might see the wastegate is facing the wrong way, this is because the outlet would otherwise be pointing right at the steering column  with only about an inch clearance, and no room for a screamer exit. This way there's room with some clever plumbing, although I've just had an idea that might be easier for me :D

Nice I was just about to send you a message about air suspension ;)

I was supposed to get the recovery company to tow my car to the garage (I have a problem with the oil feed to the turbo, causing a minor engine fire...but thats a story for another time!) and get it all fitted this week. But my recovery insurance policy is a joke! If I am within a quarter of a mile of my house, then they'll take me home, or 10 miles to wherever I need to go. If I am more than a quarter of a mile away, then they'll take me anywhere!!! 
 
On the list at the garage is to sort out the turbo, fit the air ride, replace the rear upper arm bushes with my TRD ones, sort out the air conditioning drainage system/heater matrix (slightly odd problem with the rear passenger footwell being absolutely soaked through!) and then to remove the dashboard in preparation for the retrim...which will be revealed next!

The kit isn't as complete as it really should be for a complete install kit, as Nick needs to order some air line fittings (for a quality install) and some wire joiners.
 
We've been asked by the UK distributor to give a full write up and opinions on the kit as it's the first one in the UK to be fitted.
 
Think Nick will end up re-writing the instructions as for the UK market, I can see people complaining about the Engrish instructions :D

I don't know what its like yet, I've yet to drive her since its been done. The mechanic says its good though.

Photoshoot to come soon though, probably in March sort of time. The retrim is being done next week, and I will start work on the A/V install over the Christmas period.

I had initially suggested quilted stitching, but he did a bit of research and found that the Maserati Quattroporte offers the "tufted diamond" as an interior option. He let me know and I was sold!

Yeah, we thought about continuing the theme on the side panels, however, they are just not big enough. We'd just end up with one row of buttons, and some cross stitching, and we agreed that it would look "worse" as it would clash...One row of buttons gives the eyes the perception of a horizontal look, and would detract from the diagonal pattern of the seats, despite the stitching being in place. 

I do agree that it looks "plain", but I'd rather it looked "plain" than "wrong". lol 

I'll probably get the wheel stitched in black leather with the red stitching when I take the car back to the trimmers to get the boot install trimmed...

you could do a smaller diamond pattern, or stagger the buttons. i actually kind of like the idea of horizontal, but that's just me. :shrug:

Finally got the car back after the install, and I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the work from the guys at Car Audio Security! I'll try and get some better shots in the dark, but there are red LED lights positioned where the air ride setup is so it glows red, therefore matching the colour scheme of the car! 

It is really loud with the bass turned DOWN to -80% otherwise I can't hear the rest of the speakers...I guess I'm going to have to upgrade those as well now :D

you can do a lot of it yourself, at least the headlight side on the passenger side.  I did mine in a couple hours.  Working on the drivers side tomorrow.

My boss is very excited about this idea. It's contemporary jewellery which is what we specialise in, but with a twist! After all, Garson pioneered a jewellery range with their VIP stuff, but lets be honest, Swarovski crystals are so cheap and lame compared to actual diamonds :D

So so nearly done. I'm heading over to France today for a few days and would have loved to have taken the car over. Unfortunately, the static height of the rear dampers is set 50mm too low for safety, and there is no more adjustment in the damper thread so he's machining a spacer to make sure that in the case of airbag failure (which has happened once), the arches and outer rims don't get destroyed. I should have the car back when I'm back from France on Wednesday!

what front upper control arms did you end up going? I've ended up using Ikeya Front upper camber arms

I will ask Will if I can pick up my car tomorrow. I don't think they're a Japanese brand, but they've come from another vehicle, and the arms are the same measurements as the JZS16* so they're interchangeable?

The spacer was added for safety as at full low, it wasn't driveable (it is now) and also just in case of airbag failure (which has happened before) it would not take out the arch and outer rim.

So nearly finished! The front dampers need to be raised a couple of mm. The problem with these dampers is that... because of the airbag design and air hose feed...to adjust the height...you have to take the whole bloody thing off! The adjustable arms look wicked on the front, there had to be some metal cut away to get them to fit and the upright has been strengthened by him too. For the wheels to clear he machined off some material off the calipers. The alignment equipment was delivered to him for use today...but couldn't be used as there wasn't enough space between the arch and the wheel lol. They're coming back tomorrow and he's modifying their equipment to get it sorted.

The camber is about -5 on front and back and it looks so awesome from behind. The tyre contact patch is utterly ridiculous at about half! It will be even less on the front (about 2/5 ths) . Just as well I only have 4 shows to do in September with about 6 to 700 miles of driving as I don't think they'll last more than 1000 miles before I have to change them and those rears are £350 a pop!!

So I'm picking her up tomorrow for a little bit then returning the car next week for a couple of finishing touches such as painting the calipers in body colour before I have my cover shoot with a well known UK tuning magazine.

Well i picked up the car on Thursday evening, all very exciting, polishing it with Will!

Left his unit and then 1.5 miles later, my gearbox went pop. ARGHHHHH!

Got it recovered back to the uni and new gearbox is on its way to be fitted. What a shit load of luck.

wow wish i had access to a lathe to make cool stuff like that. i can't believe that long of a damper spacer is needed to get the car up higher. i know it's due to the air/strut setup you are running. love the modifications to the knuckle, those welds!!!

very clean welds indeed. i dont think the wheels are a good fit for the car (thought i do like the wheel in general) but over all a very well executed build, def in the top of the 2GS realm

I keep coming back to this page to stare at those quarter panels

A little bit of metal had to be taken out of some of the inner arch, to allow the arm to be clear and not catch on anything. If you had tubbed front arches, then this wouldn't be an issue.

So only with the arch, not the actual wheel well like most of us with GS etc... ?
