i dont think some people here realize that you layed resin on it to achieve that shine. fiberglass resin is really hard to work with on this type of job, it makes it that much better. great work auggie.

Auggie dont be a stinge....lol j/p but for real i really want to know how to do that, semesters done and I am gettin bored either Iam gonna make a table or iam going to make a moms old pomeranian a ramp to get up on the bed....I'd rather make a table.

Check into counter top manufacturers and boat builders. They use many of these materials to build custom trim and cabinets for boats/watercraft/and R/V vehicles and trailors. It's not that hard to find. 

The spacers can be fabricated from chrome plastic tubing, or even polished aluminum tubing, or if you have the extra dough, CNC'd aluminum rod and a high polished finish (or chromed). 

As for the cup holder rings, likely the same boat/R/V supplier or fabricate some from ABS plastic, and have it chrome plated. Here is a link with multiple variations of the chrome trim, different widths, shapes and types.

There's a number of options you have if you are building a table. It doesn't have to be made from wood to look like wood, you can always have it hydro-graphic printed (wood dipped) to match your existing wood trim if you don't want to leather wrap it like AUGG, be different.

As for getting the top clear surface, you can use some epoxy or vinyl ester resin over the top of the wood top, let it flow and cure. Wetsand it and give it a good buff, smoothing the edges (like you would do on carbon fiber production), and it will give you the glass-like mirror reflection and shine.

If I built my own tables, i would integrate some crystals into the wood surface (flushed), and go over the top with the clear resin to seal them in permanently and level. Functional with bling.

Wow you've put alot of thought into this...sounds like. Even so your completly over thinking the process....soon im gonna break wide open and do a DIY for tables..keep an eye out and you wont be sorry..:biggthumpup:

Well I haven't purchased the final piece of wood yet. I am looking at maple burl big leaf wood.

I have my prototype almost finished, that I have made out of MDF, but it is only 1/2". I think 3/4" would look way over sized on my dash.

I am still looking forward to your tutorial to see how you approached each step and how you handled the trim.

IMO MDF sucks dick, really unworkable, heavy, and is made with chemicals and urine. My way is easier + makes alot of sense BTW 3/4" is about right..you'll see...

Well I only used the MDF to make the prototype to see if it fit right, so I wouldn't waste good wood. Once I finish the prototype tomorrow I will post pics and tell me what you think.

I am sure I will be able to learn alot from your tutorial.

I used some plain painters tape doubled up to hold it temporaily for the pic.


The finished product will use two side velcro and two small brackets on each end.

OK Aug, sorry. Thanks for the tips. The length is pretty much needed cause of the dash, and the width is almost 6" in the widest spot. I can make it a little shorter, I have slightly shorter supports, and I will switch to thicker wood like you said before.

Nice work, I agree that a break in the long lines will add to the aesthetic appeal though.  I have a few ideas that I have to prototype soon.  just small variations that I haven't seen yet.  Over all, Awesome work Aug, and great job so far Kingtoy....

The JDM tables are made from MDF and particle board that is laminated on one or both sides, the chrome trim is pressed into a side routed groove. It's pretty simple actually

Doesn't seem to hard if your good at fabricating. I just can't figure how to mount with out drilling and bolting into the dash like some tables are done.

The one I have that was made by zion has brackets that use the screws/bolts from your glove box for mounting. No drilling required. Stay tuned though I've seen rumors of another member cookin some ish up =)

I talked with John (Vipstylecars) and he said it was ok to mention on the boards.
