Fender work by frame pulling Machine?

Sooo a friend of mine knows a guy who has a small shop and does body work. I have a gas tank that had a small dent in it so i took it to him to get it pulled out and repainted. So i asked the guy if he does and custom body work and he says yes this is what he does. I explained to him that i needed my rear fender work to be flared out and flush with my wheels that i just bought. So he says he can do the work with not problem what he would do is take the car onto the frame puller machine and pull my rear fenders out to flush it with my wheels. He was going to charge me $100 per side and i i ask you guys here. I know alot of people here Roll/Pull/Cut the fenders but is this a Go or no go?

mann i have never heard of doing it like that.............i know some shops around my parts will either cut the lip and tackweld round bar to the edge of the fender and we like to use the fender roller but if you have it done post pics

Seems a bit excessive. It's just sheetmetal and you are probably not going out that far

lol I don't think you will get the results you are looking for with this method.  Shops dont understand that when you say "flush" you mean give or take 1mm.  Ive seen work where they pull it out within 10-15mm's.  Getting each side perfect is very time consuming.  The wheels need to come off, work the panel, go back on, come off, work the panel, go back on, etc.

Hammer and dolly is the best method if you dont plan to add material.

Nope i didn't do it yet but the guy did know what i was talking about. I told him that i have some aggressive offset wheels that sticks out 2" from where my fender is now and i need my fenders to flare out and flush it. He said "yes you need to get the fender pulled/flare out to so flush with your wheels i know what you want". I told him im going to bring him a picture of a benz [b](That yellow rat rod benz that i posted with the flush 18x13.5 wheels)[/b] like mine what had the work done and want mine to be somewhat the same as car. But yeah i see on here alot of guy here roll and pull back and forth. But i never heard, read, or seen that method done by using the frame fuller machine. The thing that im afraid of is what you guys said about once you mod those rear fenders it will never be the same. So im just asking from your guys point of view the pros and cons of this. i dont want to be like THAT guy with the 240sx "Noob fender rolling thread" lol.

different people have different methods. seems excessive to me but if the guy is reputable and seems like he understands what you want exactly then go for it, but keep in mind that it's not something that's easy to come back from.
 
best bet is to bring him some examples, explain the level of precision you're looking for, and get him to talk about it with you. if he can sell himself (no homo) then let him go at it, if not move on to the next spot.

you can do this method but as mentioned, it may not be the pull you're looking for...if you know how to do body work, you can work it to how you want...as with anything, it depends how good this guy is...pulling with a frame maching MIGHT distort the whole quarter panel since all you're doing is basically stretching the metal and not necessarily working out the metal with hammer and dolly...since you drive an older benz like mine, i don't think you'll have a problem with the 1/4...
 
pulling with a frame machine is basically like taking a porta power and pushing the 1/4 out...i know for a fact that more mud will be needed to finish it off than conventional pulling methods...

The thing is this is my first time im letting him do some work for me and when he gets the gsxr gas tank done then i will see. My friend met him THRU another friend so really i dont know how good he is. But my friend that took me to him pointed out a 05 corvette they repaired because it got into a wreck but they fixed it like new. but i probably need to get a closer look. ORRRRR i can just buy a Boston roller and DIY? Other then that i have no bodywork experiences.

fixing something that's broken and doing something custom right the fist time is a slightly different set of skills.

Yeah when i asked him if he did custom work he was like " yeah this is what our shop is about doing customs". After he said that i looked around to see if i see any  custom cars and i didnt see SHIT!  I only saw regular cars with body damage that was needing repairs LoL. I was saying to myself in my head like Where the hell is all the custom cars at lol.

don't be discouraged by not seeing any custom cars around...unfortunately, there's not a lot of money to be made doing custom body work...espcecially VIP styleing...a lot of work involved, materials are expensive and usually cars sit for a LONG time...a shop that does oem repairs make bank...that's prolly what most shops that do just to pay bills...
 
is the shop clean or dirty and unorganized?  you can tell a LOT about someone's work ethic by how clean their work space is...

Their shop is located in a ghetto. The type of cars they just have a few cars i the lot and the Red Corvette that they fixed was parked ouside next to the garage. You are right VIP-UCF i can't get discourage just because of no custom cars really my only main concern is how will my fenders look when they pull it is the main thing. Thats why i told my friend to get is GS300 rear fender pulled first and then ill go off my how they did his LoL. Im going to take my car to 1 more custom hotrod shop and see whats up with them and compare.

^^^ DAMN! Thank you for that video! That is reassuring me now.I will probably ask him if thats the method and tools that he is going to use for my car. That looks pretty legit and clean to me and would save me tons of $ if he is only charging me $200 for both rears. But i was also wondering... some of the metal above the fender needs to flare out a bit too other then just the arch.

You're welcome!! I've been trying to find a job near me that has the tools in that video cause it does look legit!! If it's material above what the pull can do, it gonna need to be pulled by a dent puller and that will mean painting and will cost more. Hope that helps. If you're able to get behind the dented part, it's possiable to just hammer it out back to normal unless it's excessive damage.

The guy also informed me about my paint might crack a little bit too when he pulls it out with the frame puller. Im going to have another talk with about the work and what he is going to used. Also i still need to wait for my wheels so he can mount it onto the car if i do decide to let him pull it.

if you do this method, i would say count on doing some minor bondo work...that means both quarter panels need to be painted and depending on color, the rear doors will need blend too...and the guy is right, plan on the paint to crack...
 
using a frame machine is overkill and if he's not careful, he could start separating the panel...
 
if you don't separate the inner structure, you can't pull as high...meaning the slope of your pull will start and end lower...
 
if you're not gonna separate the inner wheelhouse, then i would just roll fender...

Hmm yes the inner panel i need to double check on that and see how high up it goes before rounding out for the wheels. That was my #1 concern was the inner structure and how it is going t pull out when using that puller machine. Im currently printing out pictures of that yellow w140 to give the guy a better idea.

I just took off the wheelhouse cover to check it out...you can't go too high up without cutting the inner structure...i would say maybe 2.5"-3" to work with...

hmmm.... 2.5"-3" should be pleanty of room because i don't think i can run bags due to the self leveling system. It is possible to disconnect them and go with regular shocks but i can't find info on a good setup. Lastnight i tried pulling on the rear fenders just to see how durable it was and that shit was hard. The w140 was built like a tank because i cant even get it to move like 2mm lol.

yeah, the old school benz's are built solid...thicker gauge steel than other car manufacturers...

there's enough room to get a solid roll and pull but i wouldn't put it on the frame machine...it'd be like killing a worm with a deagle...way too overkill...if you were putting some 11j with negative offset then i would say try it but i don't think you're going too aggressive...

^^ Yooo i went to his shop and he has a fender pulling tool that has an oval round edge and it looks ALOT better then the tool in that one video. But yeah i thinkim going to let him do it because i know that my car metal is pretty tough so instead of rolling and puling for hours jsut pull them. Also with the frame puller we can get a more even flare.

i'd imagine you'd get more of an even flare by rolling...generally, the longer it takes, the better the outcome...especially with metal...post some pics when you're done...

umm... don't know about painting yet but.. i guess it all depends on how good of a work he does on my gas tank so we will see. yes i will post up pictures when he does it. BUT im trying to get my friend to pullsis GS300 fenders first LoL.

So i did a little test fit on the wheels and i see that in the back of the wheels i will have at least 1" or more clearance. As for the rear fenders... since i couldn't jack the wheels up closer to the top i would say they stick out about 1" + a few mm out. So not bad for 20x11. Maybe i should push for 20x12,13" and go for an extreme fender pull? Oh what do you guys think?

I think you are the man for picking up those wheels. I love them, saw them for sale online and was trying to get either of my Boss' to pick them up as they both roll CLS' but glad you got them. (at least I think they are the same ones) The whole reason I got the wheels in my sig is because there was a silver S class just like yours outside a wheel/tire spot on these same wheels only 20". Full faced wheel looks so good on your gen S class. Subscribed, I need to see this come together. And to answer your question I saw just get as low as you can first then figure out spacer  and tire size. Congratulations on the pick up, you got a good deal if they are the same wheels. :biggthumpup:

^^ Thanks! Full face wheels look good on these style bodies they really do. And im going to say these are probably the same wheels you saw.. the guy had them on his blue-ish Vw jetta and he was asking 2200 for them. But i made an offer and he took it but other then that yes tire sizes.. i need to figure out what i want to go with. But i still need to get these lips and nuts rechromed and i know its going to cost me another 5bills to do so but i ahve no choice because the chrome is chipping a bit. I also might as well send out the face to get redone and then straighten the wheels. But yeah ALOT of work to do with them. Other then the offset its not that bad considering that its 11" in the rear and its barely poking out 1" lol.

Yup, that's them SICK wheels. Rare too. Once you get it all mapped out it's going to be off the hook! It's a process though, trial and error. All worth it especially if that's what you're dealing with. I can't wait to see this come together...no pressure though =)

I will keep everyone updated tho. To this day i don't even know the style name of the wheels but only the brand lol. I searched everywhere and got nothing.

When the time comes, I just got a set of these and they are a perfect fit. I got sick of my center caps plus they looked all grimy after a while. Gave the car an updated look. The ring is black, not blue.
