I love me my Air Runner. Haha. Cons.... Most people complain about price... But I think it's worth every penny. Built to spec.

cup has less travel, but you can choose your spring rates for a sporty ride
airrunner has a stock luxury feel
fixing up a vip car id go airrunner if money allows. but imma look into the cups for my s2k
on the other hand i dont use all the travel on my airrunner but im happy that ive never had any problems and the ride is super nice

i pretty much just set it so im barely driveable and leave it there. i dont hit the switches much unless i go freeway out of town. i love airrunner for the ride. peeps cant belive its actually on bags.
but considering that i dont change height that much cups would be perfect for me too. but when i get cups i need a perfect track record like airrunner. i dont want any probs.
i know some vdub guys r doin coil w hydros too. id look into that aswell

I change my ride height a lot, because of road conditions and how many people that i have in the car. In turn it throws every thing out o wack.

I love my air runners. The ride is still luxury but with the KYB you can adjust how "sporty" you want it. The only con I have ever heard of for Air Runner is the price, but they are worth every penny.
I set mine to a safe but low drive height and then it stays there most of the time. If I am going highway or on a road I don't really know I raise it a little.
I love the fact I can slam it when parking if I want, and adjust for any road condition in seconds.

there would be a spring on a bag system (i.e. air cobra, ultima, etc.) for the same reason there's a spring on a cup system. so when you're on 0psi you still have spring rate.

SO wouldn't you have a softer smoother ride at a lower height w/ this air runner system since you'll have somewhat of the stiffness of a coil over + the softness ride of the air runner air set up.......
From what I've heard all those cups systems and brands you mentiond, ride sucks

you will have a smoother ride because of low psi, not bacause there are threads on the damper. no matter where you set the low point you will be at 0psi at that point. the reason driving at this height is considered "comfortable" (using the standard definition of the word) is because of the equivalent of a very low spring rate.
different strokes for different folks. me being someone who prefers the ride of coilovers, i'm going to lean with air+coils. in a perfect word i would be straight coils, but as my ride height lowers to the verge of insanity it's just not realistic.
anyone who complains about the ride of air+coils is either a) doing it wrong or b) isn't cut out for coils period. when used as intended (regardless of markerting) you are riding on coilovers, not air. cups are for obstacle avoidance, not changing ride height.
using the (unecessarily imho) high price as grounds for claims to "the best" is homo, but if you really wanna rock like that: top quality coilovers + cups are every bit a match at the bank.
way more importantly, specific needs should be identified and recommendations made from there. what's ideal for one person may be a sacrafice for the other and vice versa.
nothing against air runner, i even consider it sometimes. it does have it's advantages, but at the end of the day i'm more comfortable on coils. not only because i prefer the ride quality but because they're the better choice at the height i want to be at.
for example: what i'm working on is .5-1" ground (to frame) clearance ride height. with coilovers i can do this while retaining full suspension travel and an aggressive spring rate (14k/10k now, thinking of trying 26k/20k). with the addition of air i'm hoping to have 3-4" of clearance at max lift, which is more than enough based on my minimum drivability requirment of 2" (this is the height proven to get me every where i really need to go).

Actually the lower the psi the worse the ride tends to get when low enough due to no travel.
For rolling at the height that most of us tend to prefer these days, the stiffest suspension possible is ideal.
I do very well w/ my current airrunner but I know w/ what I want to do w/ the car I'm gonna need something way more stiffer and I don't want to lose the adjustablity of air, so this is why I believe the Air runner coil-over set up w/ be more ideal for me, but you said it best...

ive just heard cups dont ride good when aired up. like they arent supposed to b driven that way. but idk if thats changed. but ive seen people set ride height on coils and fill cups to avoid shit. and others set up coils at slam and airred up cups for ride height. i wonder what they ride like airred up.

Yea....I would ride slammed and jus have the option (luxury) to air up to avoid obstacles, since that's really how I use my air anyways (jus air up to clear obstacles and to park lower )

they are not meant to be driven on inflated.
to understand cups you have to understand their beginnings. they were not designed as a bag replacment. rather, they were designed for exotic sport cars that are built with low ground clearance. their purpose is to maneuver obstacles without comprimising suspension. really quite perfect for vip if you forget what you previously knew about air.
i believe the complaints about riding inflated have to do with preload placed on the springs (i've talked to a couple ppl who build/engineer cups but i can only follow so far) effectively resulting in an increased spring rate. either that or those who complained just aren't coilover kind of guys.
when used as intended (ride height max low, lift for clearance) there's no reason for anyone to be unhappy with the ride unless they were unhappy with coilovers to begin with.

if airrunner made a cup kit you'd just be paying for some kyb shocks and whoever they contracted to make the springs/cups. airrunner simply assembles third party parts with their own sealing technology while cups are self sealed units. take the seals away from ar and you have a pile of average parts.

Well, it's interesting...
With my hydraulics, the best ride is actually right at the point of tucking all around. The car actually begins to stiffen gradually the higher one goes...I think this has to do with the amount of pressure being put on the accumulators...
There always is the dark side too, Oscar for suspension  You can go as stiff as you want!

i think it has to do with the increased volume of hydraulic fluid inside of the piston and pushing inside the accumulator, give less room for travel because it has to account for the increase of volume.

Very well seems to be the case. There is a point when I'm 1/2" above being fully dumped where the car has essentially no travel. The ride comfort does seem to follow a type of bell curve per se.

After checking out the cup kit some more here are my thoughts.
For me it still has the "limitations" of a coilover suspension. With the cup kit you basically get 2 heights. You can either have it so its "slammed" when parked and air up for driving or set at driving height and air up to avoid obstacles. This means that if you want all three settings you would need to get out and adjust the coils.
For me I actually use all 3 settings. I have a height I like to drive at, I air up in certain situations like speed bumps and I park slammed regularly and at shows.
I had a coilover setup on my 911 and it was always a pain in the ass at shows to drop it and then raise it to drive home.
I love my Air Runner setup and the adjustable KYB's really help you fine tune the ride to your liking. It was a breeze to install with no fabbing at all. I think the extra cost in the kit is made up in the ease of installation.
The cup kit is cool, but I think a full air setup is much more useful.

IMHO the only downfall of airrunner is it doesnt have the aggressive setting like a quality coilover setup can give you. however thats not what i want for my lexus so i am 100% happy with AR
but ill say it again if you want to keep aggressive driving on like a Z, G coupe, SC etc id think about cups

By aggressive do you mean sporty? Since the AR is basically the same as the suspension in the new AMG mercedes which perform quite capably.

I love my Air Runner setup. The only thing I don't like are the w-lock fittings. Its more old school. Theres newer stuff out there. I like having the dampening ability on the shocks.
As for cup kits, we should let the guys from Platinum speak on their behalf.

w-locks are less likely to leak then push-to-connects
i had nothing but problems with push to connects on a previous car. i thought they were good too. idk if there is anything better now. this was a while ago

LOL... friggen Oscar! haha
Well guys, it's Chris from Platinum VIP here...
after skimming through this thread which was brought to my attention, I will chime in and give VSC some info on the Phantom Cup Kit.
First things first, with the Phantom Cup Kit by Platinum VIP, you
CAN drive with air in the cups or without. Unlike Robertua or Bold World or AirForce or ANY other cup kit companies out there, we designed our system to be driven withor without air. Is it recommended? not really but coming from first hand experience (Kennedy with his Aristo) you can absolutely drive with air in our cups. Why is it not recommended you may ask, it's just because if you're riding with air, you're not riding
SLAMMED! LOL JK...
Our cups are made of US Grade 60-61T billet aluminum. In addition to our cups, our tanks are also made of the same material. That's why we offer a
LIFETIME Guarantee on our cups and tanks. We also, offer a
LIFETIME Guarantee on the installation if done by Platinum VIP.
So what happens when we drive with no air in our cups?
With no air, the cups act as a top hat that houses your coilover spring. By which it means that it acts like if the cups are not even there.
When your car is aired up, it does play with your spring rate. The more PSI you have, the car is stiffer. But it also depends on what coilover you have as well.
Some pro's on the Phantom Cup Kit....
1. You will never have to worry about bags popping, tearing, or bursting since there are no bags involved in our system. I know some of you ride slammed on bags and have no problem with chewed up sleeves but all I know is that the 2GS has a problem with the normal size bag that rubs up against the control arm unless you get the shorten version.
2. Our cups needs very little air to be lifted, to go full up it takes no longer than 5 seconds.
3. The Phantom Cup Kit's setup does not rob you of trunk space. Our tank is approximately 14" long, 4.5" wide, 2.75" in height, pretty much it's a size of an amp. Check this out... you can even use the Phantom Cup Kit with NO compressor since our cups barely needs air to lift up!
4. The Phantom Cup Kit has a lifetime guarantee for as long as you own it.
5. Also with our system, you can hybrid this kit to mimic air bag setup and still be on true coilovers. You can use our cups and use larger lines, bigger tank, manifolds and solenoids.
Here comes the con's....
1. it will not make your car hop or will not raise quick like air bags without air bag components.
2. you cannot raise your car 8" high and park tucking half of your 20" wheels.
with the Phantom Kit, depending on coilovers, you can raise the car 3.5" to 5.5"
3. you dont have a 5-9 switch paddle valve switch, you get 2 valve switch.
4. when you drive, people wont know you have air inspired suspension since with the Phantom Cup Kit discharges the air in the cabin so you wont here the "
psssht psssshhh"
5. in combined with the Phantom Cup Kit, you do need coilovers which adds more $$$ on top of the system.
6. we dont have a cool 5 gallon tank that you can decorate, you only get a half gallon rectangular tank that looks small :ugh2:
Well in conclusion (i sound like i'm in high school... LOL), UAS/Air Runner vs. Phantom Cup Kit is to each of their own. Some may remember us saying "

Well guys, it's Chris from Platinum VIP here...
after skimming through this thread which was brought to my attention, I will chime in and give VSC some info on the Phantom Cup Kit.
First things first, with the Phantom Cup Kit by Platinum VIP, you CAN drive with air in the cups or without. Unlike Robertua or Bold World or AirForce or ANY other cup kit companies out there, we designed our system to be driven withor without air. Is it recommended? not really but coming from first hand experience (Kennedy with his Aristo) you can absolutely drive with air in our cups. Why is it not recommended you may ask, it's just because if you're riding with air, you're not riding SLAMMED! LOL JK...
Our cups are made of US Grade 60-61T billet aluminum. In addition to our cups, our tanks are also made of the same material. That's why we offer a LIFETIME Guarantee on our cups and tanks. We also, offer a LIFETIME Guarantee on the installation if done by Platinum VIP.

Very nice and informative post from chris. Sounds like the cup kits are great for sports cars who track but want to be able to clear speedbumps etc. Slick setup, but for me who's m45 won't see a track I like the versitliy of bags.

the phantom kit is universal to any coilovers, but we do not recommend teins.
the popular coilover right now would be the Megans.

Teins are much better than Megans, and I have the Tein Control Master Flex which is one of their better ones.
But Teins are designed for driving, not VIP. They only go so low, so i'm constantly hitting the bumpstop, and since the Teins center bolt is so much thicker, the cups have to be machined to size, where Megan, JIC, etc, are all pretty standard.
Also, since my coilovers are of a twin tube design, sometimes when the gas and oil mix too quickly, they make a bubble (Or something like that) which makes a funny sound in the strut. Well thats what I was told by a Tein tech, regarding the funny noises I hear, (and these aren't the ones in my head). :deaf:

I Think it depends on on which cup kit you get, Phantom says you CAN ride with air in the cups but its not recommended. If your going to be riding with passengers a lot then you shouldn't adjust the coils to be so low when installed..
I wanted to be able to set my ride height, slam my car when parked, and be able to lift my car over bumpers, but i guess to have all 3 features you need UAS/Coils or Air runner, but the fact that The Cup Kits handle better then both other setups,
i will go with CUP KIT:biggthumpup:
Unless anyone cares to share their opinion

JP-LS400;339260 wrote:Air runner should come out with a cup kit setup!
There's one thats kind of similar. A coilover type setup using a bag.
http://www.airrunnersystems.com/air-suspension/on-ground-og
You can pretty much set the air pressure to achieve an associated spring rate. Once you set that, you can then adjust ride height using a the threaded collars like coilovers. That way, you can drive your car really low at the "optimum pressure" in the air sleeves. It's not going to be the handling that coilovers can give you, but with this, you do not have to have your car "high" when you have a certain air pressure (Spring-rate). I hope I explained that right. I have the theory in my head on how this works, I just hope I was able to translate it here.
For the record, I went with the Air Runner TC-5 which I am in the middle of performing the install. I looked into multiple setups, Cups, Hydraulics, and different Air setups from other companies. Why I chose the TC-5 over the On The Ground or the regular Air Runner kit I will write about it in an upcoming write-up as well as my final decisions on why Air Runner over the other offerings.

I'm looking into switching to the OG (air-coil set up) from air runner once I get the funds for it.
The way I understand it. W/ the normal airrunner you can only ride at a certain height before you lose travel and start bouncing all over the place like cut springs. W/ this set up, it allows you to ride at that smooth height at no matter what height you ride at. So in theory hopefully I can ride alot lower.
All in all, coils is the best way to ride as low as possible do to the fact that airbags flex/move due to it's rubber composit and coils being better because of the strength of the coil.
I'm looking forward to hearing why you went w/ the TC-5 though John
And airrunner doesn't make that set up for my car :P

There is so much useful information on this thread. Thanks to those of you that contributed your knowledge and shed some light to those of use who are unaware about these different types of set ups/options we have available to us. I know I'm late on this thread, but I'm very new to this whole VIP scene and I'm far behind in the air suspension department. I'm leaning towards the Phantom Cup kit, so we'll see how that goes when the funds aren't too tight.

I know I'm late on this thread, but I'm very new to this whole VIP scene and I'm far behind in the air suspension department. I'm leaning towards the Phantom Cup kit, so we'll see how that goes when the funds aren't too tight.
6k for those ar coil set ups, that's bold world territory=)

I wouldn't mind changing over to coil/cups. I don't think I would run Megans on my car though...

Phantom cup kit seems to be the prime for cup kits in States. Too bad you guys won't sell it to overseas.. because i am sure you guys will get more exposure. I'm not sure how they compare to Roberuta kits, but i went with Top Secret Roberuta kit (after Phantom rejects me)and i'm sure they're top notch quality-wise. Although the price is their major cons, i am sure a lot of R&D are done to it, if not you won't see so many exotic cars rocking this when you check up on youtube, or 70% of Porches has this installed before sales in Japan.

I love my Phantom Cup Kit by Platinum VIP on my 3rd Gen GS430. I set my drive height with no air in the cups and when I see crazy pot holes, speeds bumps, and road works, I am able to air cup and drive at stock height. I think the advantage is that my Phantom Cup kit will never fail on me and leave me stranded as airbags would if any of the bags are punctured. As for people here with questions about comfort, I changed my springs to Swift and my car rides very smooth when no air is in the cups and smooth when riding with air. For the price of Phantom VS AirRunner, I think I made the best practical choice.
