Lets have a little talk...

Ok guys..so you've made it here to VSC and you're really excited to get down to business and snatch yourself a Q45 or an LS....but why?

Why typically only those two models? Is it a price issue? Do you just want the cheapest easiest, fastest way to be "vipafied"? (no, that isn't a word..just like "beepoo"..they were made up, and not by guys in Japan, so stop using them thinking you're being "cool" or "JDM-tyte").

Being cheap is not cool in this area of car culture and modification. Knock-off aero and wheels only hurt the industry. You want to be a part of the industry and then you take a massive dump on it by buying cheap copies. May I ask what you're thinking and how you came to that thought?

Look guys, I understand not everyone is made of money..but that doesn't mean you can't do things right and just take a little longer to do so. You'll get far more respect for doing it right, then rushing it to a shifty completion. There's some guys who have done this and gotten props from you guys..but the rest of us droop our heads, shaking them from side to side simply dumbfounded.

You see those cars you droll over from Japan? (in VIP Car and VIP Style mags) You think that's what they did? Do you realize how much time, effort, love, sweat, tears, blood, and money goes into those builds? These guys dedicate themselves to their builds and take them VERY seriously. But the guys themselves are really cool laid back people without any bad ass attitude or faking the funk. There's no special attitude that goes with the style. The cars speak for themselves so the owners don't have to.

Think about that next time...

Wow, i got mocked today because i didn't have enough money to put my kit on.

I said the reason is, i don't have the cash and i want to do it properly. Kit fitted then painted. And being self employed i'm living off crumbs most of the time. They want me to rush my car and run around with the kit unpainted held on with cable ties etc...

piss off. I also got mocked for not having my car slammed on its ass. I can't do that, because i can't get up my drive way so no. And i dont want to lower it until i get my Kit on. This way i'll know how much height i have to play with.

"You can't be VIP because your car isn't black." well fuck you. I like silver, you hardly see any silver Cedrics around Auckland so that's also a plus.

I want to do everything properly. I'm not rushing to get other peoples approval. This is for me and ME ONLY. People call me "Wannabe VIP" because i own a y33 and have Garson rims. I am trying to make my car nice. I'm trying to customize it to my own spec.

If i can't afford it i wait. If i can't afford the time or the labour to get technical things done, i wait. Or i just accept that i can't get it/do it and other things take priority.

VIP style has some awesome concepts, and ideas and the people here are so knowledgeable with all the things i want to do with my vehicle.

I feel sorry for people who want to go VIP just because that's the style in their area or some shit like that.

I agree with the op.

Definitely wait for the time when you have enough money so that you can do things right. Just like modifying any type of car, spending the money for the high quality products will benefit you in the long run. This is the exact reason I am leaving my Q45 stock for a while, as I have my Eclipse that I need to finish, and am not willing to sacrifice build quality on either one. Better one quality build rather than two mediocre ones, right?

I have been on both sides of this discussion. I definately felt more proud and got more props when I invested in top notch, hard to find parts. I don't intend to back track, so my next build(Y34) will definately take some time to complete. I have my priority set to get financially stable(career) first, then I will play!
-does this mean I should ride stock height until I can afford coilovers/air, or ride springs in the mean time. Not really a question of quality of parts, because I haven't seen any BS parts for the Y34... Just looking for opinions on this matter.

daym!! i been feeling this way for a couple days now. so i ran into this cat with and s2k, chopped it up with him and was telling me he was thinking of selling his car, cuz he has no money cuz of school. i talk to him a little more and this conversation came up, then he said "ya, i want to sell my car cuz i wanna build a VIP car". i was like "what" you just told me you had no money. i told him, "look, if your gonna build a VIP car, dont rush into it. do reasearch on how much shit costs first and if you think you have the money build it". i told him a lot of honda guys buy LS's come to VSC then disappear, why? this is my theory. they find out how much parts cost and maintenance. so they compare the more affordable honda.

pretty awesome post. spot on.

its easy to buy knock off wheels for your honda for $300, hell everyone does it. they mad 11ty billion civics. VIP isn't so much a style as it is a way of life...the cars aren't low because its the cool thing to do. anyone can stuck 15s inside your fender well. not anyone can get the lip of the rim to sit ON the fender wall.

Been wondering about this myself, with the large influx of new people popping up.
We don't care if some want to buy a cheaper G50 or made wise choices and can go buy a brand new ls460. We just ask that you realize your adding to an automotive sub-culture that is still growing, and more than likely you'll be helping to promote it in your area of the world. Do it justice and do it the right way. (Also speaking from personal experience, I was a rusher) Do it because it's fun and what you like, not for cool points or attention.

I think on of the most important points briefly mentioned is to take your time.

In the past I've always tried to do everything at once with my car but that never worked out. It's hard to fund projects (especially a vip build) when your only source of income is a full time job at a local auto parts store. (me. lol)

But if you take your time and build it little by little, eventually you'll get to a point where you'll be satisfied. And for us guys who dont bring home a big income, this method wont leave us without food on the table.

Another thing that taking your time with a build will do is help you to grow in knowlege and taste in whatever style of build you want to do. And alot of times, that "style" you wanted to do first will change.

So bottom line: Take your time and also, try not to make deadlines.

^^^taking your time is true, but some people cant and if they cant build them at a set time frame, the mind wonders off and see how other cars are built and cheaper, a lot of them just give up and buy that affordable car/mods. does that make sense?? lol!!

the taking of one's time is definitely a valid point for the newbs.

you might have a few stacks just waiting to put into your new whip when you discover vip, look at a few pics, and say "ok... i need a kit, a drop, and baller lookin wheels with a lip". so you jump on ebay and spend a couple g's on springs, a knock off kit, and some low quality wheels that have a similar appearance to what you've been seeing (don't forget to stretch those tires =p). sweet, now you got some money left to spend on paint/install/accessories.

so your car gets out of the shop/garage... looks so freakin' vip you can't stand it so you head to your favorite location and snap some pics, head home and upload em, and post your victory on vsc only to get told how weak your s**t is.

"but it looks just like this car..."

"kinda, but that one is built with legit parts."

so now you got no stacks and a broken heart/hurt butt. had you taken a little time to learn the style you would have spent your money wiser and almost definitely got better results/response.

platforms are debatable. style is debatable. quality goods are constant.

some people have cut corners, and to the outsider they may look the same as everything else, but rest assured those in the know are shaking their heads.

now if you know the style and have a stash this doesn't really apply. maybe you're on your second/third/fifth vip build and you have had it planned out since before you copped the new ride. then it's game on out of the gate.

To answer to the OP:

I am a n00b on here as you can see and I just bought a LS400 so I think I can answer fittingly.

I bought a LS400 because I am only 19 and cannot get a loan for a car. I have to buy everything with straight up cash therefore I had to choose a cheaper platform. I also really love the first gen LS so it really wasn't a hard decision for me. One more reason I went with the first gen LS is because I want to go with a traditional style build and what better than a first gen LS?

I have no intentions of buying cheap parts for this car though. I will only do the build if I can afford the right parts. My job situation is kinda shaky right now so if I lose my job I will just leave my car as is and not refer to it as VIP.

I have been lurking on here for awhile and I definitely see a lot of people that just don't get it. As bad as you don't want it to happen it will no matter what. It's just the way car culture works and all you can do is know that what you are doing is right and give props to those that are doing it right.

Very true ... Elpres..

I hate to say this but when I got my Lexus I jumped right in and spent 5k ! in one day ... and we'll say I am on my 4th set of wheels and 3rd set of suspension .

But when crossing over to vipstyle with the right style in heart ... I learned rushing is going to kill you and the look of your car ... and pockets... I loved to hear from the crowd while building too ..

Cutting corners wont help ... I try to tell people this when they mod the other style cars but its pointless .... and sometimes it helps ...

very true with with our fellow noob who has shared some information .. right on ..

Great responces in there .. glad this was mentioned ... I noticed this alot on the site was wondering myself .. like damn ... flooded with g50s and ls400 everywhere ??... and cheap parts ... whyyyy

overall I hope this does become a sticky ... If I was new in the new of the woods ... I would read read read ..

Good thread. Only thing I have to add is that buying awesome car parts is cool but don't forget about maintenance. Yes it costs money, yes it sucks you have to pay money for something that does not make the car look cooler but thats how life goes. No bodykit or set of wheels is going to make your car move an inch if you neglect it and it takes a dump. If your oil looks like someone dropped a dook stick in it and your brakes sound like a flour mill you should probably take care of that BEFORE buying that set of fusa. Just cause its a japanese car doesn't mean it runs forever without incident. I know I know it sucks truly but suck it up, could be a lot worse.

This is coming from the guy with the 1986 benz with 220,000 miles on the motor... maintenance is important! Nobody will EVER give you shit here EVER for a well put together VIP build no matter how old your car is. But if you are driving a ghetto rattle trap with a bodykit and wheel you definitely will.

wow, theres truly alot of dedicated peopel on here.

I know that my bB is not truly a VIP style car par say. Its a StyleWagon and it kicks ass. Awesome gas mileage, roomy as hell, styleish, and is slowly becomeing very elegant and classy.

At first I didnt know witch direction I was going with it, I was unsure to what I wanted but as I got inspired by the rides overseas it started in the right direction.

I have only cut corners once on it and most likely wont be doing that again. Otherwise ive dumped stupid amounts into it for the authentic quality built parts I have now.

And btw, Ive heard that white comment too. I dont see why I cant have a styleish wagon that is super low and sexy and be white? At least you guys have it easy cause you have Lexus' and Infinitis. Scions get no love around here but I still do what i do!

I know a lot of people here will probably stick by the motto "do it once, do it right" or vice versa. And for the most part I agree. Definitely put the time and money into quality parts. Make sure you do your research and don't jump into things. (I'm just playing the devil's advocate here...but..) At the same time, don't be afraid to try things out. Wheels for example, I personally, am a wheel wh*re. I like to buy stuff, run it for a while, sell it, get another set. Same goes with performance parts.

I am fairly new to the VIP scene. I've been watching it evolve over the last few years and I'm glad to finally own a Y33. But I will be the first to admit that I change setups more than anyone needs to. I've now gone through 3 turbo setups on my Eclipse in the last 2 years as well as 2 motors, 3 transmissions, 2 clutches, a few front mounts, etc etc. Now some people may say "you shoulda decided what you wanted in the long run and saved up" But unfortunately, what people want changes. I never intended on ever building a car like I have now when I started, I wanted a nice peppy 12 second ride. Two years later, I'm shooting for single digits. But throughout this whole process, I have purchased parts for the specific power levels that I was trying to obtain, not buying any knock off parts nor cutting corners, but doing what was necessary at the time.

What I am trying to say is that you don't need to immediately buy all the nicest, most baller things for your ride. You can definitely take your time, and step up. I mean, buying new stuff is half the fun in modifying cars, right? So if you see a set of wheels you like, even if they arent some Ordens or something, why not rock them for a little while until you save up a bit more, flip them, then upgrade. Maybe people will disagree with my mentality, but I do love switching setups. Plus it makes for great build threads.

Hopefully I am not stepping on anyone's toes here. If I am, my bad.

BTW...I'm in the same situation as RunninWild. I am also pretty young, still in college, not really working other than summer internships, so I know how he feels about having to keep a car stock. I just sold one of my commuters to pick up the Y33, oh man does this car a binge drinking problem, it doesn't stop guzzling my gas. HAHA

Good point...which is why I haven't posted any pics yet...still learning and saving up cash for my build.

I don't do credit, I went real heavy in debt once and getting out was a bitch. I only owe for my house, no cards...nothing.

I am not new to building cars, just to building them VIP, sorry...authentic VIP.

...and I don't do things twice...well usually don't...lol.

Good thread, hopefully cats listen.

I don't want to come off like a smart ass, but one reason that people might go for Q45 or LS when they think VIP is because the VIP community seems to agree that only those cars and a few select others are VIP Platforms.

I think what you are insinuating here is that you'd like to see more diversity or creative selection as far as platform, see some people save up more money and go for some sick platforms that are not as common. But as the same time, other guys on here are telling people that those other cars (aka diversity) will not be considered VIP because they are not a Q45 or LS. Its a double standard that either confuses people, or causes their creative process to become limited.

i picked the G50 for a few reasons. The first being the Nissan President. Im in love with it. I understand how much it cost to do the conversion but its what i want. Im saving my funds up & showed my mechanic what im trying to accomplish thanks to statepolice & Mista808. Ive heard that everyone is going to want to do it but why wouldent they? The President is a beautiful car not sayinng that the G50 done right isnt. The only problem is will people do it right and not half a$$ it. All I can do is make sure I do it right. I wont be labled as one of those people who half a$$ed it. My second reason would be because the G50 is a VIP platform thats the most affordable of the platforms. So budget ballers who can afford the parts & the lil bit more at the gas tank but not a car note added to all other living cost would logically want one. I can save my lunch money instead of paying a car note and be one step closer to Getting a Sessions G50 President Kit, some Work Emitz & some bags if i ever find a company that makes them for the G50 or even go custom if i cant & be half way done. Its going to take me longer than the average person on this site (3+ years) but im going to give as much as i can to my Q.....

there's definitely 2 schools of thought on the subject but one things for sure; when a well executed jag/benz/ka9/setia/etc. pops up in a mag or in some japanese meet pics you don't hear any of the platform purists complaining.

This thread should be another required read for anyone joining up.... go figure that this is why we have 15,216 members and there are exactly 5,867 members in VIP101. This doesn't mean everyone in VIP101 doesn't get it, but more that they have yet to show us they do. I know Mike brought this up not to stir up controversy or to hurt people's feelings, but more to help people out who would end up spending their hard earned money on parts that won't get them the results they are looking for and that will misrepresent this style. We owe this style to the Japanese modders and as a form of respect we should maintain it as unviolated as possible.

That doesn't mean "do not think out of the box", it means at minimum understand that cheap knockoffs aren't allowed, will never be allowed, and will be mocked plain and simple. This style and culture has nothing to do with Rota, Axis, or Zenetti. Those are wheel manufacturers for other styles and respected in their own environment, not here.

I think this style has grown to a point where we need to start revamping our allowance policies so we can make sure to not allow certain practices from getting out of hand all over again. Some of the people who have been here for a spell will understand what that means, to those that don't it just means asking never hurt anyone if you weren't sure to begin with, just search for it first, ok? hahahahaha

By the way, you can't have things for sale in your sig to get around the 50 post minimum. Rules are rules.

Remember that fat lips aren't everything, and a good build is something that is just flawless. Stance is everything in this game.

You can buy the most baller parts, biggest wheels, lowest riding suspension, but if you can't put it together, and put it together right, then it won't flow, and WILL break your ride instead of make it.

Don't be afraid of critisism, and do YOUR OWN THING. Don't be one to just copy someone's build, build your own car. Put your own touches on it.

A different colored fusa doesn't count either! LOL

There is a certain way of doing things. But there still has to be those set on breaking the rules. And making the new ways, We all cant just sit around..and wait to see what "they" do.. and just follow their lead. ive alwyas been on a budget with all my cars, and ive always gotten them to were i wanted with that budget. Just because some parts are 'cheap" dont mean they are bad parts. 75% of the stuff sold on yahoo groups are knockoff, along with the rest of the things on the cars we gawk over. This reminds me of a JDM discussion on a import forum, when its all said and done.. there will never be a wrong way for anyone to modify their car.
I chose the 929/sentia because i have always been a mazda freak, and the 929 was always a nice lookin car to me. And they are definatly a dim a dozen modified.

ppl keep saying that "half of the japanese builds use knock offs" but i want some proof. show me which car in a vipcar mag uses replica bs and prove it and i will rip everyone of those cars out of my mags, set them on fire, piss it out, video tape it, and post it on youtube. i call bs.

there are some decent products out there that would fall into the budget category and, much more often, great deals to be had on high end products. you can do it right without spending a grip. knockoff bs is f**kin lame. if you don't mind representing yourself as a second class type of dude then that's cool but when cats publicly defend the knockoffs all you are doing is providing an oppurtunity for someone else to justify buying it. in the end the knockoff companies will be taking out of the original manufacturer's pocket and, in extreme cases, could shut them down. now who are they going to knockoff? do you really want to be at the mercy of a tracer cause you don't want to support an original artist?

i guess i don't understand why one would come into a style based on luxury and then try and do it cheap. might as well rock an iced out cz chain, get a fake gucci wallet, throw on some crispy air force .5s, hit the club and get rocked up over some bad b***h then go home and f**k a nasty skeezer. if you're attracted by the status/style why would you build without it?

Who is saying half the japanese cars use knock offs?? My understanding is that knock offs are almost entirely a US thing as a response to the fact that there are no home grown companies that cater to the VIP crowd and that people in the USA would rather pay $700 for a bodykit and have it in a week then pay $2,500 plus shipping for the same kit and wait 3 months from japan. It's capitalizing on impatience.

Well I'm new here and I joined because my best friend (who's married to a Japanese girl) brought some VIP mags back from their last trip to Hiroshima. I was driving a Legend at the time and I was hooked. But the Legend has been totaled but being a family man I'm still a 4-door type of guy. LOL So, I'm looking around for a nice late model LS430 or 460 to work on.
I definetly know it won't be cheap and that's why I'm here to get advice and do research. No one in Charlotte, NC really knows what VIP is. Everyone is either into drifting or those crazy DONKS (UGH!). So I'll be here and there asking questions. Hope I don't get on anyone's nerves. LOL. Great post by the way.

The prices we in the states pay for this stuff is outrageous.. if we had the resources to get it ourselves, it wouldnt be that big of a deal, nor would it be so expensive. Granted some stuff is made just to be an expensive item. By the end of the year, there wil lbe soo much knockoff parts on ebay you wont even be able to keep up...lol

Some things arent worth the ridiculious price. Wheels/Suspension/Interior Work wil lalways be expensive no matter what car culture its dealing with. Muscle/Import/Vip/Mini Truck/4x4/Donks whatever, thats a given.

The parts you buy rather it be knockoff or authentic dont represent ANYTHING personal. You cant buy STYLE, and that goes with anything..and its a proven fact. Someone might not want to spend 2k, on a set of wheels, but will spend 2k on their interior/paint etc.

This whole VIP madness, is expensive.. i think we all know that. But as it gets more and more popular, im starting to see a pattern of "get a sedan" "get expensive wheels" IM DONE!, which i hate. And reminds me of the "clean" mentality of imports.. which is y i gave those things up in favor for a style that "to me" requires alot of originality, style, and class.

1) it's pay to play. if you can't justify the price then you're in the wrong place.

2) knockoff companies are thieves. they take something that someone else produced, make a replica of it, and sell it for profit.

3) everything you do represents you.

4) you can't buy style but without the loot to back it up you're standin' butt naked in the armani store.

5) it's not for anyone to decide how many mods you need to do, that is strictly personal. what affects us all is the quality of said mods. knockoff companies are parasites, as they feed and get stronger the host (original companies) grows weaker. not to mention the damage done to the scene. build an $8k y33, scream it from the roof tops, and watch how many cats with $7,999 come running.
5a) i'll take a car with $4k wheels over the same car with $4k worth of cheap bs everyday of the week. it might not be done but at least it's a start. better yet, give me $4k worth of suspension on stockies.
6) you wanna break the mold? do it with you're originality, style, and class not your financial limitations. build a platform that's not popular. do a mod that no one has ever seen. do something so baller than 99% of cats couldn't copy it even if they wanted to. don't buy only what you can afford and act like you're revolutionary. cats have been broke for years.

Not really. Read a VIP car mag, then take those ads in there and convert the prices in to US dollars. We really don't pay much more, and that's only because of shipping.

Now when a company sells a kit for dirt cheap, and there is only one vendor in the US on a forum that sells it, and they jack up the price because they know you'll still buy it, well then maybe you need to do more research before you buy from them right?

So you pretty much agree with what i said?

who said anything about breaking the mold with financial limitations, you make it seem like you have to spend crazy amounts of money to look good.. And you dont... i never said that. ive been buying rare used parts overseas since 01, i know these prices. And i know how they rise and fall from people who are just willing to pay whatever they price it. Ive payed 4x the price for a garnish and waited 4 months to get it, only to see it being sold for a 3rd of the price a year later. Your not telling me nothing i dont know.

These brand names arent gonna make your car or anything original on its own. You can spend 3k on some wheels, and look exactly like the car right next to you. No offense, to anyone on here at all.. but alot of the cars in the Vip look identical... you can barely tell whos car is who.. baller indeed! personal style no. There are plenty that stand out and everyone praises it. And all the things that stand out are the personal touches, and originality the owner put into it, rather its baller or not.

the only thing I have that'll be knock off is my body kit. It's a copy of a wings west one that is no longer made. I paid 700 for it so whatever. I guarantee if at the time I wanted to be all purist i could have called wings west and told them i'll pay 1K for it and they would have told me no. So if people want to hate on it because of that then oh f---in well. Everything else will be custom so either way the car will have alot of money into it. It won't be VIP but it'll be what I wanted. That's enough to make ME happy. If people like what they see that's always a plus.

another thing with that, alot of companies do it because the demand is high for something that no one can get their hands on. Or is no longer made, but people want. I cant say its right or wrong its just business..

nope.

you don't have to have a kit. you don't have to have expensive/extensive suspension. you don't have to have custom offset 3 piece wheels.

but if you feel you have to have these things be prepared to pay. these parts aren't cheap because they are not marketed to be cheap. this is a luxury based style.

Simple fact everyone is not going to have the passion to build there car correct. maybe they just lack creativity or dont have 1oz of style. Either way If a person "WANTS" to build a car correctly they have all the tools they need at there finger tips to get started. Money isnt a serious issue. You get what you pay for and quality is always priority. I havent read yet on this site that you have to build a car with in a certain time limit. So I believe patience is something thats practiced in the VIP comunity.

You're right but coming to think of it what I said would probably only apply to me considering I don't have a platform car. It would apply to me and others like me building non platforms where the parts are really hard to find or don't exist. Now it's like for the VIP elite on this site to like it I would have to buy an ls400 kit and modify it to work. Ah well. I think that all they are really trying to get across is to use quality parts. Quality parts happen to be expensive. You gotta pay to play. It's like building an engine. Only certain parts from certain manufacturers go into it if you wanna make big power. I've yet to see a big power engine with cheap "scat" rods but they all sure as hell got the expensive "crower" ones though.

y do you insist on saying that im defending cheap, and knockoff stuff. i never said that, im simpling stating that. YOU DONT HAVE TO GO THAT ROUTE. your making it seem like if, you dont get certain stuff, you have no taste? Companies in this Vip scene, feed of the fact that people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for anything that says "vip" "exec" or whatever. Thats just how it is..not wrong or right, just business. Everyone has a budget regardless how much they spend in the end, everyone is still working in their budget, and just because person A isnt gonna spend as much as person B doesnt make them any lesser. I rarely pay full price for anything..im cheap, i always find deals online or form connections thru people.. I pride myself in doing so...And i more than always get what i need!

lower price = less exclusivity = more cookie cutters

as they should. now show me which one of those was done on a budget...
y do you insist on saying that im defending cheap, and knockoff stuff. i never said that, im simpling stating that.

I am new to building my own personal VIP but I have helped with a few others.
I completely agree with the OP. Why do people do it?!! Lately it seems like ppl are doing it cause it's the cool thing to do much like drifting. Which is why I'm now getting rid of my 240's for good after 8 years of owning one and 10 years of working on them.

In the long run (and I hate to say this cause I'll seem like a poser) I'd like to end up with a Y33 but that is becasue I like the lines of that bodystyle. I feel that it fits me the best. I will be doing my research on what I want and when I do go buy the items I want I will be sure I spend good money for a good product.

I am all for trying new things in the VIP world but dont forget what VIP really is. Props to the OP youre thread helped me out quite a bit.

i'm only going off what you say, i can't read your mind.

the point is vip is expensive for the same reason a maybach cost more than a hyundai. you're paying for luxury/status.

if you can do it right without breaking the bank then more power to you, but if you're cutting corners to keep cost down then... well, you get out what you put in. and yes, there is a right way and a wrong way. not saying everyone has to, or even should, follow the same formula but there are things you don't do.

anyways, i'm tired of repeating the same thing in a million different ways. if you know what it is then good, if not i don't care to hear anything about it.

I'm glad to see where this has headed and that there are more like minds here than many of us suspected. Many good points have been made and it seems that it is helping new members understand that this isn't just some trendy thing to us and that we take it very seriously...seriously in that we respect doing it right, but we do it because we love it and it's enjoyable to us. Cheapening it out just ruins it for everyone in the long run..so lets continue to keep it real and show Japan we offer true respect.

Correct me if I am wrong but here goes.

those defending the ability to do a VIP build for less money aren't saying they do it with cheap/knock-off parts, but rather being more discerning about which parts to buy new and which parts to buy used, and even when to wait and buy parts later. Also about when to pay someone to do work and when to do it themselves.

And I think those that are saying you have to do it RIGHT are basically saying that no matter the cost, when it comes down to decision time, you can't cut corners or buy cheap stuff to make it work. If you want to do VIP it HAS to be luxury and it has to be quality. How much you pay for it, be it work or parts, doesn't matter, but it CAN'T be the cheap & easy way or it just falls short. The quality is what makes it work.

Personally I haven't done a single mod yet(short of LED lighting and some swarovski work done myself) because I am slowly accumulating the parts I want and need within my own budget but without compromise for quality. That will change soon, but for now it is what it is.

this sounds like a most excellent explanation. i'm a true believer of quality over quantity, and authenticity over knock-offs. if anyone knows me, they know that i don't buy or support the counterfeit black market as it is, (especially being a multi-trillion dollar industry at that).

and i totally agree on the whole authenticity/quality costs money, and it really shouldn't be rushed. i sell some high end furniture at work and even with some of our stuff, i can't tell you how many times people rush in to buy a $5k leather sofa (that doesn't do anything btw, it's just leather and big. no recliners, no special leather, doesn't come with a loveseat or coffee table.. just the sofa), and realize it's too big or wrong for their house. i don't even understand why people would rush into something that is such a big ticket item anyway.

i know im new to the site, but after reading through the various posts, it sounds like everyone is pretty much on the same page. i agree with burgy and some of the other guys. i used the word "budget" to describe my build too, but budget doesnt mean using crap, it means being smart with your purchases, and finding the best deal that you can. if someone in the community has the exact rims that you want and is selling it, why not buy it from them. who cares if its used, as long as its quality and the product you want. maybe youlll have to pass on the custom whatever, or shop around for a reasonable paint shop, or learn about suspension so that you can do it yourself and save on labor. whatever the case my be, budget means different things to different people and the main thing is to keep true to the culture.
just like another poster stated, it is actually very much like how the drift scene was. i had a hachi, not b'c it was the car to have, or b'c of initial d or anything else, its bc i liked old toyotas (which is part of why i want to build an old toyota now). then it became the car to have, and soon everyone was buying hachis and s13 & s14 and putting suspension w/crazy neg camber, mismatched rims, etc etc and had no idea how to even get the car sideways to begin with. they didnt want to try b'c by that point they didnt want to crash their expensive car, which looked like a drift machine but only went straight. the point is, its a culture, and to keep it alive it sorta needs both....b'c of the drift blowup there's a market for it, and the guys who did it b'c they enjoyed doing it can now do it for a living. but for vip its the same, poor products expand the scene, but its the ones who are true to it, that keep it going. VIP is a luxury based culture....yet i see h.s. kids on this. thats great, and i wish i could roll vip when i was in h.s. but i wasnt anywhere near vip.....i was saving for college....but they help with the culture. and as culture grows you will see good and bad

I myself am a noob concerning building a vip style car but I recently acquired a white 97 Q45 with a 156k. I love the car. Its mainly stock except for some ICE components. I had been researching parts for VIP cars and learning what I could way before I ever got this one. I know building this car is going to take some time but from personal experience of rushing vs rushing and buying knock-off vs real stuff really does make a huge difference!!!!! My old wrx was built in a rush cuz I wanted it fast and slammed and the parts I bought ended up causing more issues then tey should have, so when I got my EVO I took my time and built it and ended up with a strong running whip. Now yes, getting those HKS cams took longer then buying some cheap shit on ebay but in the long run it was worth it. I look forward to building this car and doing it right. I know it will take time b I am used to that haha plus im only 27 and I highly doubt there is an age limit on rocking a VIP y33 haha.

This thread is something i never looked at when i joined merely cause it wasnt around when i joined. and when i did, i got clowned for doing a cl build, and s55. saying it was euro and cant be vip along with a drift m45 cause why would you want too? well why not haha its as close as we have to a gloria or a chaser. But when in fact vip is a style, not a perception. And i will say the s55 is more vip than my q45 and the ls etc. (my opinion) But times have changed now and it is more and more accepting to do more euro cars as vip "style" which is the name of this board.

Point of the matter is there will always be purists to the game. OG is a great example of one who often speaks his mind. (which to me it comes off as elitist no hate thats just you.) For me, i got to much going on to care what other people do to their car if its in pure form or not, if it looks good, great comment, if not, dont say anything. I like what I am doing to my car, cause I am doing it for me, not to appease the conscious of purists of the game. Cause one, i know my f50 is no where near that pure vip, vip style form. and ya know, i am ok with that

Agree you get what you pay for..it's like buying toilet paper you can buy the cheap 1 ply kind thats rough and were you gottah keep wraping it around your hand so it doesn't tear all the way when you wipe your A$$ or pay the little extra and get the soft scented 3 ply toilet paper... LMAO.

I say take your time in saving your money and pay the little extra for what you really want...

Hmm.. so I have read several several posts about all this anti-knockoff stuff. I know what everyone is saying. I did buy some knock off wheels, yep ill admit it. But that's be for I knew they are knock off's. Still new to the VIP game but not trying to rush into it. I'm gona keep rocking my knock off's till I find what I'm actualy looking for for sale in an offset that I want. I got Rota Grids. But that's the only knockoff part I'm gona have, and its tempary. Mainly gona use em till I get my car sitting exactaly how I want it to sit. Then my net step will be proper wheels that are not knock off's.

I've been a member of this forum since 2011. I usually sit back and enjoy the beautiful builds/threads however, i've been into lowriding for most of my life but of all the car cultures that I respect the V.I.P culture speaks the loudest to me. The varying cars and different ideas used from the different cultures within the culture shows the creativity and though not ALL cars being posted are authentic if built right i still feel they are worthy of a nod!
