y33 overheating
hello,
my q's been running warm the last few days (especially last weekend, when ambient temps were between 95-110*. fucking socal) and i was wondering if it's because i'm not running the plastic undertray. i'm also running a 50/50 blend of coolant/distilled water -- would upping the ratio of water help?
thanks!

check the fan and make sure there is nothing blocking the radiator.... also make sure there is no air bubbles in the coolant system. If its time then replace the water pump and thermostat.... good luck!

Yeah what blitz said. i had to replace my fan clutch and thermostat on my Q. Probably a good idea just to flush the system also.

what blitz said and what dzznuts agreed to. that or put race coolant in there.

Also running AC will make your car a lil warmer. Is it overheating or just running hotter. in 110' desert heat my temp never passes the halfway mark just hangs out right in front of it.

Redline Water Wetter
Ran it in my track 13, it helps dissipate heat tremendously. Nothin else compares.

yes, that it does. I run it on my s13 but in this case it seems like a short term solution. He might have to dig a little deeper.

it used to be rock solid, right there on the half-way point no matter what i did (high speed runs, low speed idling with a/c full blast) but last time going up the grapevine the car hit maybe 3/5 of the way up the temp gauge -- i think there might be something wrong with the fan and thermo. is there an easy way to check those? (i haven't worked on a car since my old 240, like 4 years ago. fml. maybe i should get back on the bus)
thanks everybody!

btw, broke, i remember you talking about making an undertray out of aluminum. mind sending me a pm about that? :)

Ive been having the same issues starting 3 weeks ago. Didn't think much about the undertray as its really meant for under-drag rather than cooling porposes.
I did change the thermostat with an OEM unit from the dealer, but temp starts going up when the AC is on at highway speeds. I have a feeling the previous owner replaced the radiator with a cheaper thinner one as the radiator look extremely thin compared to most other stock ones.
Anyone know if there's an existing aftermarket upgrade for our radiators?

ditto.
also might be a good time to change those hose's and flush out the system.
and yes sometimes those under trays have to do with it.
I removed the one that my 92 mustang had started to overheat, put it back on never overheated again.

Here are common over heating problems for our Y33 cars:
- Check the seal on the radiator cap, you have 2. The one in plain sight and there's another one underneath the plastic air intake. The main the inlet for the primary cap can corrode over time, remove the cap and see if the neck looks like it's been chewed on, a simple cap replacement will not fix this. Fortunately the metal neck is a small part that other hoses are connected to and can be removed with normal hand tools.
- Take a small flashlight and check the front of the radiator. The space is very slim but you'll be able to clearly see a lot of debris sticking out of the front of the radiator. Unfortunately this is not a simple "hose off" deal. The fins are very pliable and can easily bend. Do Not shove a pressure washer in that thin area to clean it off. Pinching the fins shut is actually worse. It would be best to remove the radiator and flush from the fan side to the front side with a hose.
- If it may the fan clutch get the motor up to operating temp, shut off the engine and try to spin the fan. if there is any resistance the fan clutch should be fine. If it spins freely the fluid in the fan clutch may be bad or may have leaked.
- Of course as mentioned earlier, do the standard radiator flush first, even if you may have some of the other problems. It is usually a combination of two or more problems when over heating. solving one may be enough to keep her running until you have the cash to fix any other problem areas.
