*DIY* Custom Lip from Home Depot

I have read on other forums that theres a garage door seal that you can make out of a lip. cheap. ive seen some pretty good ones that look real legit. but I was thinking, its a foamy rubbery type of material. can this uphold the force going 60-80mph? what will it look like going that fast? will it bend with the pressure of the wind or will it stay as is?

At first when i heard of this mod, I laughed out loud then googled it. Surprisingly this was a thread on CL that generated the same responses as you will receive for this.

See pics from the thread.

if you were to use that.. use it as a tool to make something better. Like put it on, then fiberglass around it to make it sturdy and mold it into the bumper.. or something? or just make a lip from clay and then set fiberglass over that. think of art class.. :)

A lil harsh there BoB but I understand where you are coming from. Just save and get what you really want. If you have doubts about something then you probably don't need to buy it.

Get it after you get a kit, to save it from scraping and fudging up the bumper, but don't try to make it an accessory to flaunt.

Other than that...no. Home Depot lips were done on the cheap for budget race cars, that helped with some downforce, because nothing was made for the cars that did it.

Those cars, were budget hondas and VW's in cup matches.

Honda-Tech got ahold of it and blew it up, like everything that is good and smart, ends up becoming some fad, with a million people who pretend they have race cars on their beat up, dented, primered, cut springs, steelie 14"s with bald tires from doing burnouts, but they have a home depot lip so they are hella fast!

Really though. Kit saver? Maybe, maybe it'll stop the paint chipping by rubbing on that instead of the kit.

HD Lip for VIP or anything other than a budget race car? No.

IF you do do it, make sure to use wood screws, as they are black, and will blend in perfectly. Make sure they are the big ones, like 4-6", that way it'll be screwed on there nice and tight!

these came out nice,

as with anything, there is a tasteful and a tasteless way to mod a car, VIP or not...

and trust me if you look in a VIPstyle or VIPCAR mag, then you will see, even they do something tasteless once in a while, and they define the very thing so many people on this forum so passionately argue about.

it may or may not, but what they did with that home depot rubber doesnt look half bad, it gives the lip kind of an OEM trim look to it... im gona keep it in mind when i finally get my front lip...
for $15 bucks, its worth test fitting with double sidded mounting tape before making it permanent, even if you dont end up putting it on...

No it is not may or may not. It does not belong. VIP is not about installing gardening accessories on your ride so you can save a buck. Maybe I sound like a jerk but I'm just keeping it real.

scene smean, honda boys and their toys, doriftos, auto Xers, rat rodders, muscle heads, Vip...

i dont care what scene its from, if it looks good on my car, it doesnt matter who thought of it, but i guess im more just of an enthusiast than a purist...

but seriously, you cant tell me that the g35 and sc400 look horrible with it on! i miean you would be lying to my face of you didnt say it actually looks decent...

if you ask me, i might actually have paid $50 bucks more than a lip with out the trim look of the piece of rubber...

i kinda wish i had thought about it myself, and yes i would add it to almost what ever lip i end up getting for my ka9 RL, but then again, the shape of the front bumper, and 99% of the lips made for my car would look decent with it...

I hate this look and it has no place on a VIP car or any car that cost more then a few pennies. Even if it is done right and looks nice when finished I still don't think it should ever be on a luxury car. And that Z is absolutely ruined none of it looks good to me. The stick on decals and everything they are all aweful.

it's not about not lookin' horrible, it's about lookin' good. it looks decent enough in pics but in person it looks like s**t. that's the truth. i take it you've never actually seen it in real life.

if the foam cost $200 nobody would do it. i gaurentee the low price is the only attraction here.

what i'm saying is in person it looks like what it is. in pics it could be mistaken for urethane or some other rigid/semi-rigid construction but it is actually some type of rubber foam and you can tell when you look at it.

it's not about how much it costs, it's that in this case it looks every bit of as cheap as it is. i only brought up cost to make the point that if it wasn't so cheap no one would do it.

It still amazes me how anyone can do such a thing, realize they f*cked up their car and instead of taking a loss and throwing their cheap parts away, they go and get more cheap parts to try to make it look better.

I think it's amazing that people with no brain try to mod their cars. I've seen some fucked up mods and it just makes you wonder why they even tried. Being unique and being retarded are 2 different things. And with the home depot lip, I don't really see a reason to NEED a lip. If you aren't willing to spend the money on a real lip then why get one at all? 9 times out of 10 the car will look better without a lip
