Need some wheel guidance :)
Hi all!
Well recently I decided to retire the xA/iSt VIPStyle project and bought a Lexus RX 330. Love it, but after a week or so my modding addiction is getting the best of me and I am in almost full force to start building on this car :pat:.
Looking at allot of photos there are allot of wheels people put on the RX that are kind of Dub/truck wheels and I want a more classy look. It's a crossover suv so it's a hard quest I think.
This was the fist set I looked at. I like the look but am thinking they might just be temp wheels while I search for better for quality rims.
Only wheels I really like but still think I can find a better look are the Work LS 105.
I really like Mesh wheels as well. I wonder if I can get them and they will work with the rX.

So what's the deal with using staggered wheels on an AWD car? Bad? or just rumor?

Staggered wheels are bad on a AWD car is rumor,
Stock widths on the GT-R is staggered, Look at all these EVO and Skyline time attacks running staggered wheels and/or staggered width tires. Width and offset doesn't affect ratio.. running height of wheel and tire do.

Wow you just had Dave in here ! you see the stats ? 13 posts since 2006 ! EPIC
My old roommate had staggered on his A8 and no issues from what I seen.
and btw ditch those "new wheels" and save up for a nice pair imo.. the black rx330 is nice but I hear you will have issues getting low even with air . now question is , is that a rumor ?

Alot of good feedback sofar. Funny those^^^ were posted, I was going to say that I'd love to see your RX slammed/fitted on some 21" brabus and some brabus interior goodies (pedals, shifter, door pins, etc) to tie it all together. Only thing is that tires are going to get you if you go with the 21" wheels.
And one thing I do like about those "temp" wheels is the way that the spokes alternate or get skinnier towards the bolt pattern everyother spoke/visa versa.

Those are the LS 105's I am test fitting! Same ones! I live not too far from there warehouse :) My feeling is if they fit and look good it would be a SIN not to buy them. Step lip amazing! I dunno about the tires. I will need help there. Dave I am glad I got you out of hiding to post :)
The ones I posted first are Monarch. would cost me about $1,800 with tires. I think I would rather get the Work and tires. Use my stocks for trips and the work for show. I want AirRunner but Shin is not sponsoring anyone really. He's not a deal maker :) $4k for the kit on my car.
So I think springs or Coils with the work will be my plan. WALD kit and JP/Garson LHD custom table. Unfortunately Brabus as amazing as there stuff is seem to be Euro specific. Benz! But dam they ahve some great looking quality stuff.
My RX is Light metallic Blue on the outside and Light Grey leather interior. So all the VIP Style stuff is almost exclusively Black and Beige :( So even though my Garson neck pads and JP cushion stuff work, it's not really the solution I am looking for. If I can have them custom make me stuff with my Light grey leather wow!
PS: I would love to know where the rumor came from about staggered rims on AWD cars can damage the drivetrain?

Any Tires fitting wizards out there!?!?! I am VERY exited to put these on the RX. I also need a 5 or 10mm spacer I think for the rear.

Ok the response from my associate that builds cars for his business says the GT-R is not a full time AWD but an assist so it's not the same. Also he mention how those time attack get rebuilt pretty quick. My car I am going to have a while.
I am not saying anyone is wrong here or there. I am just trying to get all the facts I can before I return the wheels :( :signdammit:
I don't wanna return them. But I so wish I could be more sure about the damage potential. I mean even if there is going to be damage how bad would it be and how costly to repair?
PS: doing allot more digging into this atm. I wish I knew more about the subject. I gather I will be an expert by the time I can get tires for the wheels l0l!

IF it turns out to be hazardous you coud always hae the fronts rebuilt to the same width as the rears. Check out audi, subi and MB (look for 4matic in MB forums) forums for more info.

Yeah that makes sense. Would not be that difficult since they are 3 piece?

Ok kind of really confused still. I looked at this site to find out what clearance I need. I really do not get this stuff. Too many variables. This was calculated for the rears.
Current Wheel Specs Width 7 inches Offset 35 mm
New Wheel Specs Width 10 inches Offset 39 mm
Inner Clearance:
42mm LESS
(the inside of the wheel to the strut housing)
Outer Position: EXTEND an extra 34mm
(position of the outside edge of the wheel)
35
So um huh?

what are you not getting? the wheel is wider so it will have less clearance (42mm) on the inside and will be 34mm more flush on the ouside.
that info is more useful BEFORE you buy the wheels but is not going to help with fender to tire clearance as much as a test fit with the suspension loaded will.

Yeah I think it's more that there is info missing. heh I should prob. just go measure everything as is stock and go from there. I should get a 1.5 to 2" drop from the springs as well. The rear was test fitted and they suggested a 5-10mm spacer.

no info missing. that's all you're going to get from an offset calculator, it only tells you in reference to the original wheels.
everything will change when you lower the car since the geometry will be altered. don't buy anything else until you drop it.

Ok, my stocks are 18/7 w/ 235/55 99H tires.
The new wheels are Work LS105's 21x9+26 21x10+39. This was what has been suggested and been quoted.
Fronts (255/30/21)
Nitto Invo $229
Rears (285/30/21)
Nitto Invo $318
The front tire has a circumference of 84.9in while the rear is 87.1in. Will that difference affect the AWD system?

Agreed I ran those sizes before and it won't be a problem as you will never be able to notice the difference. As for the awd fitment questions people have run staggered wheels and/or tires on awd for a long time. If you look back most of the more well known instances of this were of course on race cars but that doesn't exactly mean it's not safe for a road car. Also the gtr is awd but is variable where as I'm pretty sure your car is locked. So not the same thing but at all times all four wheels are getting power on both cars (In the instance of the gtr it actually has two drive shafts running side by side). Thing is cars mentioned such as porsche and so on that are awd are almost always variable to some degree like the gtr and controlled by a massive amount of electronics and sensors. Most of the time a staggered fitment is programmed in the system to work with it properly. I am not certain if the gtr is like that but it wouldn't surprise me. Anyways what I'm trying to get at is finding out it works on another car does not mean it will be ok on yours but with such a tiny difference in size I think the sizes BLK mentioned should be fine.

THis is "IF" those sizes exist. This is the issue. Supposedly there are very little available sizes for 21's. If you know some one that can find them at your size than please do tell. I am going with what I am being told a tuner shop.

Yea their are more available than people think. I think it's just more people are used to 50 different options that are available on stock car sizes. I've run half the tires on that list although in different sizes and for your app and for the price Invo's are good.

I want to say low mid 3s like a 3.35" I'll say. But that would be the entire sidewall as in "inside" the rim as well as the part you see when they are mounted. Also I'd have to think works or airrunner alone would be enough for tires lol.

Yeah I can get the tires if I sell the work DH easy. But I also have allot of other mods I am planning so selling the AirRunner is also a big priority :)

As far as treadwear ratings go tech the hankooks are a little longer lasting but I have found that number isn't always exactly trustworthy. It has been a while but I want to say it's more of a generic system that isn't to specific and all. Anyways about 45 min south of you is online tires $844.55 including tax for the hankooks. I didn't look around much but I have used them before and figured that's certainly better than the price you were looking at and they are close. I will try to find some time later and search around a bit more for you. I found some places selling the goodyears as I mentioned for dirt cheap. The 285 goodyear cost as much as the hankook 245s and so far these are the two best priced tires I ran across.

Hey thanks for going as far as you did to look for me. Yeah I was at a tire shop a while back and the owner told me his costumers were reporting over time the Handcocks lasted longer. However I think some are buying tires with more tread. So no joke from me, but maybe he was just trying to sell me a brand he got better commissions on.

Is the place called Online Tires??

K should get the tires this week. However I am concerned about the rear wheels so I think getting a spacer hub BEFORE mounting the tires and riding with the wheels.
Anyone have any idea of a site that sells Spacer Hubs for 5 lug? 5MM or 10MM. I really am not sure what I need to be honest.
Wheel is super close to the shock. Not sure if it really needs spacers or not but me and the guys helping me test fit though I needed one.
PS: Gonna try regular 5mm spacers 1st and see what's going on.

Meh ok really busy with Finals. So I am doing this one thing at a time that fits in my schedule. I have to see my day and pick up a glass table so I am just getting the tires today on the way back.
Thanks everyone. I know I can be kind of OCD with questions but I usually get the best results by making sure I am completely clear with my answers and information. Should see the results in pics soon.
Total: $771.39

Funny how this week when I called he said he could get them by Friday. However I ran into an issue with a medical bill so now I have to wait on the tires. Life is really funny.

Yeah I did well actually. $165 per front and $195 per rear Hankock V12's. mounting and balancing included. Plus I might get a $50 rebate. Can't complain. Any other tires will go to about $250-350 generally. Yuk....
I hope to have the wheels on this week!!

Getting the wheels mounted Thursday afternoon! At the very best all my fitment fears will not happen and I can drive off into the sunset :) Works case is they are just not gonna work. Middle ground I need spacers :)
Worst case I can at least sell the wheels allot easier with tires on them. W/o tires they would sit and collect dust I am sure.

WOOOOWW! The wheels/tires just blow me away on my RX. Man I was so tempted to run them even though I need 5mm spacers in the rear. But well I held back and need to wait a few more days till I get the spacers and can mount the wheels safely.
PICS some time next week :(

Such a butt f^ck a few weeks here. lol! Ordered 5mm spacers, tried them, need 10mm. tires and wheels been in the entire rear of the car for almost 2 weeks. So ready to get this over with lol!
Anyone know a local SoCal place I can get 10mm with extended lugs?? Wanna do this ASAP. Really stressing me out at this point.
PS: So if the rears are heavier than the fronts there will not be an AWD issue? Just thought of this and wonder if it even matters where the AWD system is.

Sorry to hear about your roadblock man. I am all to familiar with the "process" myself. It can be nerve racking. Especially if you are half as impatient as I. I'd hit up any of our vsc vendors about your 10's. If they can't, try Harbor Motor Sports at 714.379.7770. They've always taken good care of me. Good luck and hang in there.

just saw this thread. having a staggered setup in general on an awd car will lead to tranny issues. might want to consider getting into another set of wheels.

autofashionG20, Been discussing this for a while on this thread. Have any people you know or situations reported other other than what has already been discussed? I can't find shit online lol! About all my research says if done right it's fine. All the facts point in this direction. Totally up for info that will deter damage but seems this is a Grey area of fact and rumor, time will tell along with some real physics.
NELSON09 I will contact them ty.

quite an interesting read, after 4 pages i was hoping to see the wheels on the car :( lol
i too have a 4wd car and will be running staggered offset, from what iv been told the width of the wheel is irrelevant, as long as the rolling radius of the tires are within 1-2% everything will be fine!
i hope so anyway cos rear diffs are expensive when you have to import them from japan!! lol

Yeah I know right!?!!??! Well some of it was money as I ran into medical bills and had the tranny resealed. That cost me a whole set of tires +. Yes the research says width not an issue.
Anyways I ordered the 10mm and for Pete's sake I hope to have them on soon. I mean it's allot of work and $$ for a real live test fit! lol! But it;s kind of how this world works in VIPStyle. Pay and Play.

I must say I am very happy right now. It's a start.......... a good start. Next up is Air and a Wald kit in Jan.
Rear:10mm spacer + a 2mm. Fronts are 5mm. Might take out the 5mm later. Gonna see in a few weeks.
What a different world between the two.
Might remove the 5mm from the front later. We hall see.
Over all man I am so relieved. It's such nicer drive than the stocks as well. Very smooth and comfortable. More tire on the road helps. Less rubbing than the stocks lol!! Love it.

Dazz Motorsports seems to have actually finished the wheels in contract with Work. Not 100% Work. Like 50/50. One off. Work got all upset on FB over this. Then he ended up saying it was ok to just say Work LS105's. lol!
"WORK LS series was a Private Label project done through Dazz years ago for USA market. WORK would supply the center disk to Dazz and Dazz would build the wheels here in the states using their own rim barrels" These were only for the 20's and up. 19's and below Work Japan made themselves.

A little bit yes. But I don't mind it for now. It's an SUV so I am giving myself a break on the stretch :) If I had a choice there would be less poke and more tire. I will prob. take out the 5mm from the fronts. I don't mind taller tires either at some point if I they are available? Brings me back to tire shopping lol! I am also getting a digital Air system and Wald kit in Jan.
Yeah he was really taking the wind out of my sails lol! In the end he overreacted and kind of made me look bad when they contracted with Dazz for this wheel. Unfortunate for me and him that he posted I think.
