Nangkang 225/30-20 leaking on a 9" rim

Hey folks

Just got my wheels on but have alot of trouble with one of the front tyres leaking air through the rear side.

Its used rims but they are in balance so i dont think they are damaged. Its stretched but its not the most aggressive stretch i've seen. Anyone have had probs with nankangs? Cant find anything while searching here.

Should i spray in some of those sealer foam/slime? Maybe someone have experience with that.

Thanks

i haven't had any issues with nankangs and i've gone through 3 pairs so far (225/40/18, 245/40/18, and now 255/35/18) -- check the bead of the wheels for gouges and make sure the tire tech didn't tear anything when mounting the tire.

also, check your load rating -- make sure that they can support the weight of your LS, otherwise you might risk issues down the road.

i have 215/35 on a 9 and 225/35 on a 10 and dont have any problems.

if the tires are new, no nails or bent rims, chances are the bead is messed up from mounting

I will get my brother to take of the tyre and then we will clean everything to make sure they're ok. They were not easy to get on the rim but i hope we didnt fuck anything up while mounting it.

Have anybody had luck with using those slime cans you can buy in gas stations etc?

I dont hope the rim is crooked.

The tire machine / wheel balancer said all four was ok.

In the pic on the other thread showed them mounting the tire on from the face, it probably tore the bead, it's actually easier mounting those wheels from the back. But on the leak you probably just need to sand the wheel where the bead sits. GL

Yeah you're right GEE702, after i took the picture we found out it was to hard to get the tyre on from the front so we got it on from the back. I dont know if we tore the bead at the first try :-( I dont hope so.

I hope I can get the tyre of monday and clean everything and put it on again. Its leaking alot more now, so i dont drive the car more, only if extremely necesary.

No one have tried the foam spray from the gas stations? I might wanna try that if the cleaning etc wont be enough.

I really dont hope i have to buy a new tyre.. arrrhh...

Don't do foam! If you ripped the bead you're better off putting silacone sealer on the rim bead and then air it up I've done it for my van and is still holding air. And don't drive it underpressured it will ruin the side wall of the tire. Btw what air pressure you using cause I usually use 45 n up psi for 30series

Just got the wheels of today. The sidewall is ruined half way around, so i might as well throw the tyre away. What a shame..

Just ordered a new one, so i hope this will be my lesson. The new tyre will get bead sealer.

Thank you all for your replys.

I've gone through two sets of Falken ST115's on the fronts. I think the
installers kept screwing up and I would leak every few weeks. Another issue
is the bead on my wheels. I have chrome DH's that are soon to be refinished
in the winter months. I was seriously going to switch to NS2's or Federals
in the Spring of 2011. I really don't want a repeat of this past season. I was
constantly swapping out my stock and Eurolines every few weeks. Then
I would get new tires on and they would leak in a matter of days. This happened
hours before shows, meets, etc. I really like my set up but I'm going to be
more conservative next year with tire sizes. Instead of 215/35's on the front
9's, I might run 225/35's. The 10mm on the side walls are a little bit safer as DD's.
For the rear 10's, I'm going to run 245/35's instead of 235/35's. Best of luck
to you and keep us informed on how things are going.

Just got my new tyre on yesterday. Didnt hold air to start with so there must be a slight problem with the rim i think. We then putted bead sealer on the rim bead and it worked.

But today on the way to work i just heard a "PUFFFF" and then drove into the side to se what happened. The inside of the tyre was popped in on the rim. I dont know if its because it might had leaked some air and then i kindda drove of the tyre. It happend when i turned on the steering wheel.

Well i changed to sparetyre once again. Damn i'm tired of this shit.

I drove with 3 bar in. thats 43,5 psi. i am thinking of maybe put on some silicone along the side of the rim and then wait 24 hours, put on bead sealer and put air in the tyre again and maybe give it 4 bar (58 psi) and see if that helps.

What else should i do?

I really would like to drive the wheels for a couple of month before chaning to winter wheels.

In the winter time the plan was to get all the wheels to repair shop and get them all 100% aligned and new chrome on the center.

It's a 3pc wheel so check the silIcone that seals the barrels if there's any damage, might be leaking from there

No nothing leaking from there. Its from the inner side of the rim.

But why did the tyre pop in? Because of too little air or is it because the tyre was not getting used to sit that stretched?

Well, i gotta try again i guess. I will give the inner side of the bead silicone all the way around and let it dry till tomorrow and then put air in the tyre again plus giving it bead sealer again. Hope it works. Im pretty tired of this wheel.

Now i have also tried to lay down the wheel and putt Slime into the tyre and wait 24 hours. It didnt leak until i installede the wheel on the car again. It leaks about 5-6 places around the wheel bead.

I also found out that from the tyre to the outer edge of the wheel there is 10mm but on the other wheel there is only 5mm. So its like the tyre is not sitting in place. Dont know what to do but get the wheel to a pro and check the rim.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the installer has screwed your tires. Here's my suggestion, get
new tires for both front wheels, sand the wheels inner beads down a bit
before installing. Try another installer, maybe a professional tire performance
shop. I had the same thing happen twice. I'm basing it on two things, one -
my installer didn't have experience with stretched tires, and two - my inner
wheels are probably failing due to the chrome being old.

Notice how I highlighted NEW, do not buy used tires either. Typically thin 35
wall tires will get ruined a few times of switching them on and off. I think that's
why you are leaking from so many different places on the tire after each
installation.

Another suggestion is to have your wheels looked at professionally and
possibly refurbished if needed. You might want to try a slightly wider tire on
the front. Double check the load weight too. Your LS is pretty heavy.

Keep me informed since I'm going through a similar situation.

sounds like that tire is done i had the same problem but with a 235-35-19 on a 19x10 turned out the seal had been torn from the jackass at the tire shop not dismounting and remounting it right.
It happens just dont take it to the hood tire shop expecting it to be done right

My buddy had the same problem but with 225.30.20's on a 9.5". One went flat and he had a couple instances where the bead broke. This was also on a LS400. Luckily it all happened at low speed.

Finally some news.

I just got back from a rim repair specialist. He repars wheels for a living so he's got alot of experience. Well he was surpriced on how badly my rim looked. So turns out that the former owner of the wheels had them repaired at an amateur shop. A guy who fucked it more up than repairing the wheels.

So he shaved a little of the inner rim bead and made it all smooth and balanced. He also shaved a little of the rim mounting plate so it got all in good balance etc.

The rim bead was very rough and bouncy so thats why the tyre was leaking.

Well, i'm getting the tyre on tommorow so i cross my fingers and hope the best. Will keep you informed.

Ps. He also told me that 30 series should get between 46 and 50 psi so im going to do that.

So finally some good news. (so far)

I booked time at a pro wheel and tyre center that is well known in my country in the "tuning scene".

He sure had the right equipment. He put on the tyre without any problems. "The right tool does half of the job". So i've learned my lesson from this. a shame i learned it the hard (expensive) way. But this guy is going to do all my tyre fitting from now on.

The tyre has been holding air for twod days now and sits right in place with no problems. So i think this was the final battle for this wheel. I dont hope i get more problems for now.

Yeah it sure is about talent too. But on the pro machine they dont use "crowbars" to get the tyre on. So the tyres are not going to get wear marks from being put on and taken of a couple of times.

Remember he did put on 3 of my tyres with no huge problems. But they sure did got some marks im sure.

But well the tyres are on now and they are not leaking air so thats perfect. Thank you all for the comments and replys. Great forum :-)

Your problem is Nankangs ... That LS is way to heavy for you to be running those rubber band side walls ... if you wish to keep the tire size i suggest you upgrade the brand of tire to a stiffer side wall .....

if you wannt keep to the nankang brand i suggest you up the Side wall size ...

My exp with Nankangs tires is that once you run them with minimal air they will never be able to keep that air when stretched ..

Would it look stupid if i upped both? I mean 235/35-20 ? Or should i just go with 225/35-20 or 235/30-20? I also want it to match at least a little with the rears stretch if you get my feeling. I also have issues with front rubbing so i have just purchased some bump stops to see if that can help. But dont want to upgrade to too big tyres and get alot more scraping.

Well, prices also have influence on my choice if i should step up the tyres. I already spend alot on buying 2 new tyres on that front left tyre.

235/35-20 costs about the same as the 225/30-20 i'm running now. But they are 3,8% bigger than stock.

225-35-20 also costs about the same and are 2,7% bigger than stock.

235/30-20 i cant find in nangkang. Would be the coolest thing to have the same brand front and rear. But they are only 0,2% bigger than stock while the 225/30-20 i'm running flat on now is 0,6% smaller than stock. Instead of nangkang i can find falken FK452 and they are a little more pricey. Like 50% more than nangkangs. I also find Achilles ATR Sport to the same price as the nangkangs but i dont know that brans? Any good?

Dunlop and Michelin are double the price and i dont feel i can spend that money at the moment. Also want to upgrade to UAS in some near future.

So what would you do and what would you recommend me to do? Thanks guys.

I only have problems with one of the rims. I got shaved some of the inner lip so get it all straight and balanced. I'm thinking that maybe the rim has got a little too small for the tyre to match?? So thats why it leaking so easy.

I dont know if it will help with a bigger profile or its better with some more width to get the rubber closer to the edges to get a more tight fit? Get my feeling?

I'm going to agree with some of these guys. I think the small tire wall you're running can't handle the weight of your LS. My 215/35 Falken ST115's can't handle the weight in the front and go flat. I'm going to leave Falken all together in the Spring and beef up the size just a little. Bump it up to 235/35's and I bet that will solve your problem. Make sure to get NEW tires as used ones can have slight damage from multiple dismounting and will leak air.

Only problem is that they are 3,8% bigger than stock. So maybe they will rub when i'm turning. I like the car to ride low. Not super slammed but deffinantly not a hi riser.

Btw i have bought some bump stops in case i need them.

I'm late to the convo, and if this has been said already, forgive me.

If you looked through the consolidated tire thread, you probably saw that I had mounted a 225/30/20 neogen to a 8.5. the stretch wasn't entirely extreme, but due to the 30 series profile, I don't know if I would have gone much wider with it. with a 35 profile, you can stretch more, but there is also a good amount of displacement still for air to seal the bead to the rim. That extra 5% makes a big difference. Not saying it can't be done, but due to the weight of the car, and the stretch / thinness of the tire, your culprit might simply be wrong tire sizing.

I could be way wrong, but that is at least my suspicion and it comes from personal experience with that sizing of tire. Good luck and hope you can get it resolved.

Thank you

I think i will try with 225/35-20 and hope it will last better. I have also though about maybe go to a specialist and get welded more aluminum to the rim. But dont know if that will help. The rim specialist who balanced my rim said that it should be alright now and it also have been until now, but yeah i hope the 35 will do the trick. If not i have used alot of money on stupid tyre isues.

Hey guys..

Just read the other topic here on the site "falken vs nangkang" and one of the guys mentioned that he only drive with tires that a marked with "XL" (reinforced sidewall).

I just checked on my purchases and the rears are XL but not the fronts. I checked the place where i bought my tires and there are two different nangkang tires in 225/30-20. One type marked with "rim protector" but not XL marked, and then one with XL but no rim protector. I didnt know XL ment until now, and because of me not knowing, i bought those with rim protector because that seemed the best i my ears. They both cost exactly the same.

So to solve the leak problem should i then buy the 225/30-20 XL and keep my rooling diameter or should i go with some 225/35-20 XL that are 2.7% bigger than stock??

Are the wheel leaking because its not an XL marked tire?

Hey guys.. I was wondering if it would look dumb if i put 245/30-20 in the front wheels too? Nangkang dont make 235/30-20.

the 245 can take more kilos because they are W95 instead of W85.

Yeah but they will be 2,78% bigger than stock on my car.

245/30-20 will only be 1,1% bigger than the stock 205/65-15 wheels.

So i solved my leaking mystery over this week....

I went to driftspeed for tire rotation, and it turns out that there is corrosion on the bead. It was not too serious, but enough to make air leak out of the bead. They cleaned the surface with different grits of sandpaper and re-mounted the tires. This is the first time I ever had to clean the bead since I refinished the wheels 1.5 years ago. Looks like my tire tech is going to be watching my bead more carefully every time my tire is off the rim.

I went from losing 15 psi parked over 3-4 days to losing 1 psi over a 200 mile trip, and then parked for 3-4 days. Those 200 miles were not pothole free either.

I would definitely re-do the barrel with a polished surface. With stretched tires, moisture gets to the bead much easier. On top with a chrome surface, corrosion will almost always win.

edit: I'm also running Nankangs on the said leaking setup, 225/35-19 on a 9".

Hey folks. The summer is coming so its time to get an update on this thread.

Today i got to my pro wheelman and he installed my newly bought 245/30-20. They fitted perfectly and just by the look of it, it looks much more "stable" or what can i say. Well lets see how long it will hold air this time. i dont hope i get any leak problems this summer.

Will post updates when i get the wheels on and drive for a couple of weeks.

Good to hear everything turned out alright. If you recall, I had a similar issue. I finally picked up a brand new set of Achilles from tires-easy.com a few months ago. When a professional low profile tire shop removed the old Falken tires (mind you they only had 400 miles on each one before they leaked) we all inspected them. OMG, the original tire shop had literally ripped the rubber surrounding the beads on all three of the four tires. The original shop must have used some form of tire glue which obviously held temporarily. I'll seriously never use a non experienced tire mounting service ever again. Go to the pros that specialize in stretched or even low profile tires.
