Fabulous Expand

How much do they cost?
I'm looking at 17x8 +32-ish sizing.

It's in off-topic because I have no plan to buy 'soon', but I need something to shoot for! :crazy2:
I want these wheels bad :D

Re: Fabulous Expand

lol, better idea to just get the right size the first time ;)
18 is too big for a Protege, and clearance would definitely be a big issue in that case...

Sounds like a conditioned fact to me...Are you sure you can't "make" it fit?

Cut the fenders, show em what's up. ;)

I dunno. I don't think it would look right.

I may reconsider depending how low I can go. At first I thought 18" with aggressive (for a Protege) offset would cause a lot of clearance problems, but that one pictured has the same 2" drop I was looking at (well, I'm looking at 2.25") and even the tire doesn't tuck yet, so I guess it would fit. Comes down to matter of preference after all.

What's the deal with Ground Control sleeves? Are they reliable enough for daily use or is it a gamble to install them?

I have to agree, that would be awesome.

why 17's? go for some 16's with fender flares and slam it to the ground.

Beater? :uglystupid2: Cheap, yes, beater, no.
Because Proteges need love too, and with the prices here, it will be a long long time before I can afford a real Vip platform, so just bear with me. And when I am ready to buy a real platform, a Crown might just be the answer...but that's not for now.

Flares are one thing I will not do to this car.

I've already heard the "don't waste time on it" comments, I'm gonna do it, I just need to find out how to get it done. Very simple:

The wheels: 17x8 Fabulous Expands
How do I get them and what do I need?

The drop: as much as possible (duh)
How do I get that and what do I need?

'nuff said. look at the prices of crown majesta's...its like 1500 bucks? some ridiculous price... remember when you first posted on here? saying you could sell your car for like 2500CND? well....then its gonna be like that much to get a crown imported...talk to robert, look at the prices crown's are going for, and grab one! if you are going to spend 2500 for rims for your protoge, wouldnt it be better to just start with the crown?

Re: Fabulous Expand

wow man, you're seriously looking at dropping 2k+ on brand new Expands when you could AT LEAST buy an early 90's LS for that much, sell that car and then have some money to mod the LS...

SERIOUSLY, what kind of replies were you expecting on a VIP car site? you've gotta pay to play... VIP is now the new drift scene... anyone with a car tries to find the cheapest way to do everything...

You should reread your post.

Yes, I am seriously looking at dropping 2k+ on Expands, though they don't need to be brand new, just good condition and the right size.

And then you say I'm trying to find the cheapest way to do everything? :uglystupid2:

I'll just do a mini-recap for the new people who missed it (sorry you have to endure me again Caoboy ;D)
I'm doing it because I want my car to look nice, not to impress the Vip people. I know this car can look good, so I'm going to do it. It may be hard for people to swallow but that's jus because it's never been done, it's too unorthodox. But it's not that strange - just look at all the other econocars in the Vip styled world, all the little hatches that are as far from Vip cars as you can get, but it got done, now people appreciate it, it just takes someone to take the initiative.

SO.
I guess we've established they cost what, 2 to 2.5 grand?
Where can they be bought new? Used?

and that means he's exempt from any sort of classification? I'm just saying, a protege is in no way, shape or form any type of VIP platform or even one I'd consider close. I peronally think it's absurd to drop a bunch of money on Expands, a very VIP and expensive wheel to put on a protege.

Why put wheels worth more than the cars worth if in the end, the result is still going to get the 'wtf' look from everyone who sees it. I mean sure, it'll have nice wheels and all, but in the end it's still an OLD PROTEGE.

It's not going to look good in my opinion and I personally think it's a huge step in the wrong direction and a huge financial mistake if he's trying to budget.

And I didn't see the second page before that response so here goes: I definitely agree everyone has their own style and flavor and what they want to do. I know tons of out of the normal stuff goes on all the time, but that doens't change the fact that people are still always going to be like 'wtf mate' when you do it. I see 30-40 protege's a week at least. Some from the 80's or 90's or whatever and they're all beat to crap rolling on hubcaps with some random person putting to work in them. It's just not my idea of an ideal platfom in any way. Alot of people mod K cars and other econobox's sure, and I think some of them are cool looking, still doesn't mean I think that every Kia, Hyundai, Honda, Mitsubishi or Geo metro would look good slammed, kitted and with wheels worth more than the car.

I can appreciate other people's taste when they present a finished product and it looks decent enough. But coming from the 240sx world, where there's a new topic every day 'How much for Work Meister S1 in 18x9 / 18x10 for my S13 240sx' or whatever, I'm just tired of seeing the posts. Personally, I wouldn't spend the cash for those wheels in those sizes that restricts it to pretty much that platform. Because somewhere in the next few years or whenever, you're going to be tired of it and want something else. And then you'll be stuck with $$$ wheels that fit nothing but an old protege you thought you were going to drop sooo much time and money in and just never got around to it.

I have refrained from saying anything up untill now.. but...

YOU should re-think your strategy.

1) You are the one who is on a "budget"
2) You are the one who wants to be "different" (I wish oneton still had his old sig..lol)
3) Doing something people have never done before cost $$$$$$$$$ (something you don't want to spend  a lot of)
4) Nothing your doing makes any sense.

I understand you don't have a nice car or anything, but your not helping yourself either. How many Crowns are in Canada? Yea not very many... so that would be a lot more different than making your protege look nice, since i'm sure there are plenty of "hooked up" proteges around. And very very few Crowns.

You are insistent on being "different" yet you are doing the same thing people have done for years, trying to make a car they bought (or that was given to them) because they are on a budget, something. Yea, it CAN be done IF you had money to spend on it. Otherwise it's gonna end up looking like a hacked up Protege on expands. woohoo.

Like I said maybe try and re-think your strategy, because I think you have poorly planned up untill this point.

It sure sounds to me like your trying to justify your car by your reasoning for wanting to modify it, which makes no sense at all.

Re: Fabulous Expand

So you don't like Proteges, that's fine by me.

I see 30-40 protege's a week at least. Some from the 80's or 90's or whatever and they're all beat to crap rolling on hubcaps with some random person putting to work in them.

It's a daily driver, not a daily beater, it's in excellent condition. Unlike those people, I actually give a s*** about my Protege.

I can afford to put down "big money" (though that's pretty relative) on wheels for this car, I can't however afford to buy another car right now, nor do I want to, it's not going to happen unless this car gets written off, end of story. I'm especially not going to sell my car that I've put a lot of hard work into, to have a car shipped from Japan to British Columbia then shipped to Winnipeg and registered as god knows what just because you feel my Protege is not good enough for a set of wheels.

My budget is my business, I know what I'm doing and what I'm going to do
Yes, I do want to be different
Where did I say I didn't want to spend the money? I'm looking at freaking Fabulous Expands, you think I don't know they cost a lot?
People say that about Vip cars too. Who cares.

I may have been off to a rough start with this car but I'm getting tired of you guys assuming I'm just some cheapskate 18 year who just wants a Protege to be a Crown and hang at HIN in the VipAutofashion section. That's bullshit. I'd rather drive it stock than have a "hacked up Protege on Expands". I'm going to do this car right.

Yes, there are a lot of hooked up Proteges around: flashy wannabe racers, all of them, only a few clean ones and that's because they have just drop and rims outside.

I didn't ask to be told that my Protege is garbage or not worthy of Expands, or a waste of time, or whatever your opinions are, I asked about the wheels. This is ridiculous, I can't ask a simple question without the thread turning into a circus. And to think I was trying to keep my plan low key... :buck2:

Do whatever you want to man, you should heed advise from people who have been there before. Like i said to me it honestly sounds like your just trying to justify your reasoning for having your car.

If you want to do, cool do it, but all i see is you talking about doing it.

Yeah, maybe it'd a bit vindictive of me to bump this thread instead of making a new one.

But it's for good news!

16x7 +7 all around, so more aggressive in the front, less in the rear, and narrower the whole way around.

I figure these will make a good set of alternative daily wheels, and because they're dual 4-bolt, I can slap them on the 240SX as well, if need be.

Dayum.
Don't put them on the 240SX though too skinny! I threw some 18x7.5 on for kicks and they looked like pizza cutters.

I wonder who bought the 19" Expands that were for sale here.
