UCF10 Engine/Bay Project Thread

what started as a dead starter is going to end up being a full project. for those that don't know replacing the starter requires removing the entire intake manifold on the 1uz. only makes sense to change all gaskets, ignition components, and various misc. parts while you're in there. another problem i ran into was a deteriorating wiring harness. i could have plugged it all up and rigged it to work but that's not my style. that brings us to here:

Forum image

as of this picture (slightly outdated) the engine has been broken down as far as it needed to be, cleaned, had the caps and rotors replaced, and had the cruise control removed. it's been sitting like that for lack of motivation more than anything, but i finally found something to get excited about. here's the plan:

Forum image

front (red): all intake components will remain out (short ram intake of some sort will be used). i am going to convert to a radiator mounted electic fan (mechanical fan removed in pic). i'm 90% on removing the abs unit from the front passenger side of the bay, but the final decision will depend on what solution i come up with for the ac lines that run through the same area as the brakes lines do anyway.

passenger side (yellow): the cruise control has already been deleted. the misc. relays and whatnot to the front of the wheel well will be relocated to the outside of the rail. holes will be welded, sheetmetal smoothed.

driver side (green): battery will be relocated. the oevrflow tank will most likely be replaced with something easier to hide. not 100% sure about moving the fuse block but i'm gonna check it out and see how much confidence i can conjure up. some rust to clean up where the battery tray was.

engine (blue): i have decided to go for the 4.7l tundra block. 1uz rotating assembly w/ custom forged pistons in the 2uz block original 4.0 top end. why not? of course some fancy finishing is a must. egr system will be deleted to clean it up.

i expect this to take a while but check back for updates every now and then.

Doing a "wire tuck" but more of a "component tuck"? Getting stuff out of the way and cleaned up? Good luck!

i think y'all have the wrong idea. the tundra block is just a "might as well while i'm in here" kind of thing and the forged pistons are to make it work. really couldn't care much less about the power.

I was also thinking in the future about doing a Tundra block but I have read somewhere on the Lextreme website that it cannot be done using the 1UZ heads.

This will be a very interesting and looking forward for the completion.

the tundra block works with the 1uz heads, all that it requires is custom pistons. i think there may be more issues on the vvti top ends but i'm not 100% since it doesn't apply to me.

been a while, but i finally got back onto this today. as of right now this will remain a 4 liter build, but the engine is still coming out and the bay shaved/painted. all accesories are being removed.

Forum image

all the research i have done has been on hondas. apparently they just have harnesses runing up each rail. the ls harness actually makes a complete loop around the bay. i'm hoping it will be simplified once the unnecessary stuff is removed.

Forum image

i'd be lying if i said it wasn't getting a little imntimidating, but for now i'm just focusing on getting everything out. if i thought too much about putting it back in i'd probably quit.

the motor itself is pretty well covered so there's not much to worry about there after the egr and cruise control delete.

most of the action is the stuff on the wheel wells.

You planning on tubbing the front wheel wells like the 240SX guys do? I think welding and bodyworking all the holes would take much longer than cutting and adding some trailer fenders. Plus, you could add more clearance if need be.

Looks good! I'm stoked to see the outcome!

the wheel tub, looks stock cause of regulation. but it is far from stock, its a custom tub design. Not all wheel tubs look ghetto as shit, perfect for a vip car cause of the attention to detail. Those cars are so insane on custom work cause of regulation. They were so strict about it that the fabricators and the team made everything look as stock as possible but still move weight around for a balanced car. The Stratus Super Touring Car, had its exhaust tunnel moved just a little bit to the passenger side for better balance of weight. and did it making it look stock so it passes inspection.

Cliff notes
to sum it up, tub it, do it right, looks bad ass, cause no one can tell

to get rid of the bumps and humps that use to hold things. I like a shaved engine bay, but I guess I am picky about it. I like the covering of holes and such, but making it rounded like there wasnt a indentation that gives away that something was there

couple reasons; my engine hoist is in my storage unit at the very back, the engine stand is back there also with a motor on it, i'm going to need help to pull the motor, and i really don't need the clutter just sitting around until the new block shows up.

waiting on the pistons and mounts (this week), rods (next month) and bolts/bearings (???). i want to have a complete short block built before i pull the motor and swap the heads. also have to make a decision on transmission. w58 is looking like a winner since i won't need to hold a ton of power and it's relatively cheap.
