91 LS 400 Speedo Gauge

Has anyone here have to replace their gauge cluster or repair it on a 1st gen LS?

Are the needles going out?

such an easy fix.

Is it? I remember it was something like 400 bucks to get them replaced when I had my LS400. I didn't have that problem though...

lol dude its like 4 capacitors on the board, not even 5 bucks worth in parts. just need a steady hand with a soldering iron.

I'll have to post some pics of the gauge. Its completly limp, its sitting about the bottom of the cluster. Almost like its loose, the gauge seems to be like 43 miles off. Like if im going 65, the gauge says 22. Go figure.

Does any one know of a place that repairs clusters?

I remember seeing this as a service on a couple ebay listings where you can either send in yours and wait, or pay more and have a different one immediately shipped to you.

I know most are for the climate control but if you search youll find it. gl

I dunno if you have a 93-4 but i dont see why they couldnt do 89-92 as well, message them

Why not take it to a shop and have your speedometer re-calibrated?
 
Maybe it's your speed sensors out of whack and you need a new one. How many are there on the LS400? Start by taking them off and finding out the correct ohm reading and see if one of them is faulty.

my cluster on my 92 is 90% ok...but the last 1/2 of the tip on my speedometer gauge is faded out. not a huge deal but would like to know how to fix it in case the whole thing goes out.

also...my LCD part of my air conditioning is unreadable (I can't see what temp the car is set on or the date) is that a common problem/easy fix?

F*CK!  I'm tempted to mail in my gauge cluster to this dude.  I don't have issues with the needle partially lighting up.  I have issues with the WHOLE DAMN CLUSTER not lighting up at all.  It will come on..turn off...come on but blink for about 30 seconds and then shut off for a long ass time.  Half of the time, I can't even tell if im running low on gas or how how fast I'm going.  FML :sad:

When your cluster breaks, where does the dealership send it?

I wasn't an actual speedo fix for the problem that i have.

Can anyone else shed any light on this, any of you guys from the 808 with all the 1st gens?

To me, this is a delicate problem because it potentially impacts the odometer. I don't know about your state, but in mine there are all kinds of laws and rules regarding the odometer, and things you gotta do if the odometer is tampered with (which, I believe includes the removal of the cluster). Its mainly to try and prevent thieves from rolling back the miles and whatnot. So make sure you document everything and fix it as soon as possible, just in case it ever comes up when you sell the car.

Anyway, I don't know much about fixing this problem, but I'll try to help. I did some searching for you, and most places only work on the 93-94 clusters with the digital odometer. I did find one place that mentioned the early 90-92 mechanical odometer, check them out [url]http://www.dnaspeedometers.com/lex.htm[/url] and give em a call, see if they can help. 

I used to own a UCF10, it was a '90, and while I did not ever have any issues with the cluster, I did spend a good ammount of time under the car. I believe the early model cars 90-92 with mechanical odometers have a cable running from the speed sensor up into the cluster. Again, I don't know this for fact (since I never took mine apart), but thats how most older cars with mechanical odometers work. The mechanical speed sensor would be located on the transmission itself, probably on the side. It should not be too hard to spot, there are only so many connectors on the transmission. As far as what is wrong, it could be a bunch of things. I think a really good test is to drive a known distance and see if the odometer is properly recording the miles. If this is a 'yes' then it would indicate that the speed sensor and cable are working properly, and the problem lies within the cluster itself. If the answer is a 'no' then you are back to square one. It could be the cluster, the cable, or the speed sensor. If the rest of the cluster is working good, and only the speedo is acting up, then it kind of points to the cable and the sensor as potential problems. On some older cars with stuck or slow speedo needles, I've removed the cable and regreased it to solve the problem (disconnect from speed sensor at the transmission end, add the grease/lube (no homo) and drive the car, it will regrease itself as the cable spins inside the housing). Another thing to check for are kinks in the cable, maybe it got smashed from under the car. You could also try replacing the speed sensor with a junkyard one, or a friends one that you know works, but I don't know how much work that entails. I do know you should try to do some form of troubleshooting because it's possible to send the cluster off to be fixed, get it back, and still have the problem (if it's the speed sensor or the cable).
