my car's build thread :D
i put together a build thread on stanceworks, and i thought it would be nice to copy and paste to vsc too.
hey all,
i thought i'd make a build thread. the car's going through some changes and i thought it would be nice to put them into post form :D
it's a 2000 infiniti q45 anniversary edition -- i got the cool wood grain wheel and all the options sans nav and heated seats.
i don't have any photos of when i got it (october/november 2006), but it looked something like this:

(thanks to whomever took this photo)
i drove it stock until may 2008 (damn, that's a long time) when i picked up insurance group coilovers
(they call it the high performance styling kit. awesome. totally indicative of how stiff they are :P)
at the same time, i also picked up a set of work euroline n's with sizing something like 19x9.5 +8 19x10 -10, as well as the full complement of peak performance s14 multilink in the rear (RUCA, toe, traction). hooray for aurora rod ends!
and FML, i can't find photos of the car at this stage, not even an iphone photo. it was ugly though -- i'm sure you guys can trust me on that.
come january 09, i decided to sell the eurolines. a cat with an s14 in fresno picked them up, then i scooped up a set of MAE japan's. i thought these were going to be sized 18x10 +5 and 18x11.5 +13, but the seller misrepresented the offset (they were actually 18x11.5 -13. fml). here's a photo of the car, right before i realized the tire was sitting on the fender (keep in mind that's about -6.5* of camber):

one last photo of this stage:
then, i took these MAE's to a wheel shop which shaved down the pad 15mm (making them +2, effectively). the same day i got these back, i lowered the car a little bit more -- driving the car on 18's means it has to be lowwwwww (well, at least lower than it was on 19's)
a few months later, i decided it would look good lowered a bit more:
that's when i found out the lower limit of these insurance coils, without playing with spring droop. fml.
i then drove the car without many changes.
oh yeah, here are some rolling photos i took a couple weeks back:
(yes, that is a defi vsd visible in the first photo :P) if you're bored, i made a quick video that night too:
http://vimeo.com/14980178
a couple weeks ago, i decided that i'd take the car to the next level -- i'd get rid of these dried jizz-faced MAE's, get the car as low as possible, and get custom front lower control arms, so i could space out the front track and get more negative camber. it was getting weird looking at the rears, with -7* and the fronts with barely -4*.
here are the rims i picked up (apparently everyone on zilvia knows this car):
sizing is 18x10 -6 18x12 -7.
here's the best part about these wheels, though:
at the same time, i ordered some more cool shit for the car:
(thanks tuan at aspec!)
i got the front fucked up wheel back from the refinisher last night, and now this is what the car looks like:
the refinishing shop only took care of the bend and the rash -- i'm totally undecided on what i want to do with these right now. and fml, it totally needs to come down wayyyy more in the front.
the car's running 225/40/18 and 245/40/18's right now with -4* camber front (which is the max this suspension design can do with just camber plates) and -9.25* rear (!). when the car goes under the knife next week, i'm going to ask alex pfeiffer (battleversion.com -- shameless plug. cool cat, even better s-chassis, 86, 350z, and mazda sus parts) to dial in less camber for me.
i'm going to keep this thread updated with progress over the next two weeks leading up to autofashion's VIP festival. i'm hoping the car will be done and the stance will be correct by then.
thanks for reading!

ok all,
here's an update:
alex @ battle version helped me build some custom FLCA's yesterday, but i got owned by swift -- they sent me 7" front springs instead of 6" and i didn't catch the discrepancy until after they were installed. aspec and swift won't take them back, saying that it was my error for not checking. oh well, lesson learned.
as a consequence, the front of the car is about the same height -- it's maybe half and inch lower than it was previously. alex also helped me setup the rear alignment properly; i'm no longer rubbing the inner wheel well. by the way, these swift springs are amazing. highly recommended as an upgrade for your street-driven coilovers.
the next step is doing what i should've done from the beginning -- get the s13/4 suspension swap in this car. it'll allow me to lay frame (if i wanted to, not that i'm going to. it'll be nice to have that much adjustability) because the coilovers themselves have much less vertical height. i'm also looking for something that can be revalved here in the US. i'd like to run a much higher spring rate, just to control the vertical movement of the wheel within the well -- i'd rather run stiffer suspension than bottom out and rub everywhere. does anybody have any suggestions for coilovers that have an adjustable lower mount AND are able to be rebuilt? only baller coilovers come to mind -- zeals and aragostas. fml.
anyway, here are some photos:
nice. lots of camber. i'm doing something like -9* rear and -5.5* front. i'll need to cut and extend both my tie rods and tension rods if i want more camber out front, which just wasn't in the cards yesterday.
as always, comments and criticism are welcome! :D

I definitely approve. Looking forward to seeing more!!!
To get the front lower, you could remove 2 of the 3 locking rings. Unless, of course, the strut cartridge is hitting the inside of the lower mount.
FLCA's look great!!! So much inspiration on this forum for my own Q!!!

nice work on the custom arms.
i'm still puzzled by the springs. is the spring perch snug against the spring and you're just running out of threads before the lower bracket bottoms out or do you have a ton of droop? either way, i think it's pretty s**tty of aspec to blame it on you when they f**ked up.

how do i explain this? the spring is too long to allow me to adjust height by lowering from the shock mount. there's no droop (actually, there's a slightly higher-than-average amount of preload). if i had a shorter spring, i'd be able to try to lower it more from the bottom shock mount, since the spring is taking up too much space to allow the bottom shock mount to move up the threads. does that make sense?
anyway, it does suck ass that they're not owning up (and the guy who works there is my homie's brother too, wtf) but i guess policy is policy. fml. does anybody need a pair of 65mm ID, 7" long, 12 kg/mm swift springs? :P

oh yeah, we would've tried that if it weren't for the fact that we ran out of time. alex had to take a trip to the airport to pick up a homie in the afternoon.

ok, i was pretty sure you would be doing it right but had to check. everything makes sense now. i've never personally seen a setup that would run out of room before the bottom bracket or car itself would bottom out.
definitely get those extra lock rings out of there. the added space may be more beneficially used to remove the preload you mentioned than to raise the bracket, since preload will raise your ride height as well.

Also, about the coilovers... I know BC Racing coilovers may not be the most expensive nor highest quality, but you can purchase new cartridges for about a buck a pop. So instead of revalve or anything, scoop up new cartridges.

Setup is on point!
If you are going to run S13/14 suspension Fortune Auto Coilovers are really good. I have a set on my G50 and they ride great. I can go an extra 3" lower if i wanted to and are pretty affordable. They also are a vendor for swift springs and is able to revalve coils to any spec.

hey guys, thanks for the recommendations. fortune can only go up to 16 kg/mm, apparently, but we'll see what else they have to say. BC doesn't say anything about being able to revalve for different spring rates. i'm going to keep looking. fuck, i wish i could afford ohlins road and tracks (but they don't yet have an s-chassis application so this whole urge is pointless haha)

i know someone who has spoke to bc directly and they will do aggressive rates/valving on request. not sure how far they'll go. honestly i've been drivin low for while on 14/7 and 10/7 with no problems. i think at some point its just going high for the sake of it. of course damping plays into the equation and jic compression is considered ridiculous by some.

yeah, i already feel some difference on these 12/8's -- some of the killer undulations on the commute didn't feel quite so killer today. i'd really like to ride in something with such high spring rates to see how it feels like, but i gotta feeling that if the valving is on point i should be ok.

Yea 16k is the max rate fortune will make there springs which is why they are now promoting swift as one of there spring upgrade. I know ImageRacing is a dealer for them on Zilvia and they are really good to deal with. I went from 11k/7k to 15k/11k without re-valving for about 14k miles and they feel great. I was told that daily driving on stiff springs without valving is not that bad because we don't really track our cars hardcore like others to effect performance. But i wouldn't know the difference since i didnt valve my shocks for stiffer spring rates so if someone has let me know.

i can dig it... that's actually pretty dumped for y33 coilovers. everybody said they don't go low i thought. definitely need some front camber to even it out.

HOLLER!
Charles, your Y33 has always been my favorite! I'm glad to see more cool stuff going on the car. I wish I still had my extra front subframe laying around. I would have given it to you! 180sx steering rack and all. But gone is gone, good thing s13 sus isn't hard to find :)
I don't know too much about all these new coilovers, but I use to have Stance GR+. From my experiences they were awesome, beefy, and cool looking. PBM coils are also super cool. But I'm sure you will find the right set, since there are hundreds of different coilovers to choose from!
I love this car, I love where this car is going, and I hope you keep doing what you are doing.

fuck, i wish we could've gotten more, but apparently my peak tension rods and stock tie rods are maxed out at this camber and we would've had to cut and weld to be able to align it. for the next iteration, i'll try to convince alex to do that for me haha

apparently that motherfucker can't weld unless he's stoned. hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
for real though, the welds on those lower control arms are cleaaaaan :P
anyway, the exhaust shop didn't really pay too much attention when putting those tips in. i'll be taking the car back in this weekend to get it tweaked. there's not enough upward angle for me and the tips are uneven. fml.

some updates:
i have an old tpms setup i picked up at an autobacs last summer, and that needs to go on. problem is, i can't read the japanese instructions. silly me, i should've thought it through before i picked it up.
i also have a pair of pioneer premier ts-c720prs components coming next week. i think it's about time i deadened the doors and got some sound in the car (these two rolls of raammat and ensolite have been sitting for 2+ years). i'm on the hunt for a DLS a4 for front stage and a jbl ms-8 for processing. i also might toss the tweeters on the premier setup too (maybe i'll get a pair of hybrid audio l1's?), which is the weak point of the setup, according to everyone. hmmm...

so, homo jokes aside, here's some progress on the car:
i fixed the exhaust tip issue -- they're angled a bit more now. looks a bit better. i still need to hose clamp the left exhaust hanger, since the tips are slightly off center when viewed from behind. saucy.
i also put in a xentech hid kit today -- 3000k fogs ftw. i'm assuming these are going to give out on me before the end of the year, in which case i'm going to pick up something baller like IPF's possibly. i'll keep y'all posted on the longevity of this $38.99 (shipped via usps priority, no less!) hid kit.
i'm also thinking i should go 2.5" piping, like josh, so my car is louder. i wouldn't mind having a louder car :P. i got shamed by a new gen camaro on the freeway the other day. that thing sounded beasty.

i'm also thinking i should go 2.5" piping, like josh, so my car is louder. i wouldn't mind having a louder car :P. i got shamed by a new gen camaro on the freeway the other day. that thing sounded beasty.[/QUOTE]

btw, a pair of pioneer premier ts-720prs showed up yesterday afternoon. i'll be picking up a few more parts to get my front stage ready -- jbl's ms-8 for processing and possibly an alpine pdx-f4 to drive these components in an active configuration. subwoofer and such will have to wait -- i don't have the cash or the time to put something together at the moment. i'm about to pick up a fully loaded 13" macbook air so the car is just going to be driven for the next few weeks, haha. the bank account isn't going to allow me to indulge multiple hobbies at the same time :P

haha, so am i -- i used to be into headphones, and i've always had an interest in car audio. i've always wanted to do something interesting with the Q. the fantasy system would be some mcintosh amps (with the vu meters, of course) driving the old alpine f#1 status three way, with a jbl ms-8 processor, hooked up to either a nakamichi cd700 or the mcintosh mx5000. the icing on the cake would be wiring by some totally ridiculous company, like kimber hahaha
but since this is a daily and i needs my bluetooth (and i hate to admit it, because it's emasculating, but i need my navigation too haha), i have an alpine w505/p1 combo (which i'm probably going to sell for a pioneer z120bt). the bling is nice too :P

well, if you want, i can sell it to you :P
i also have the required optical cable for h701 -- you can control the h701 directly from the w505 through ai-net, and have optical out. yatta! let me know if you're interested, i really want to get into the new pioneer :D

OK guys, bringing this shit back.
brother's giving the car back to me (yay) so i think i'm going to start working on it again.
i didn't end up getting the zeals + s14 hubs on, so it's still on insurances (kinda regret selling all that stuff) but i'm gonna try to mod the insurances to go lower. i'll keep you guys posted :D

I think I've seen a few Cimas from J-land that were rocking 19"/20" staggered both reverse and step lip... looked hot especially with stock'ish bodies. Why not give it some thought Charles, you'd only need a 19" not too aggressive reverse set and then rebarrel the fronts to desired 20" semi aggressive step lip ones...
juuust a little bodywork, kröhm, radius and all set
Ünd eine thang: You don't need to run mega camber and ultra aggressive setup to look GOOD, minimal camber=maximum lowness, and keeps the bodywork price from piling up... just a thought.

yes, that's true. i'd cop the 20's then shorten my current coilovers to get way lower -- i'm envisioning at least 2-3" lower to get it looking good.
or, i might just save my cash and leave the car as is haha

20s tucked vicious would be straight, maybe even 19/20 or 18/20. i'd expect you'd need some tubwork to stay low though. if you raise it (clearance wise) then you're goin' the wrong way.
