My JZS147: finally getting to it.

Strated out with a 95 GS 300 I bought back in 2003 w/35K on the clock. Gone through many design changes, after some years researching and getting lucky with some nice parts, I finally started the build.

Thanks to my friend Damicci for helping me out figure some things out and help me here and there in the design and orientation of my project.

BTW, this is a build in process, aiming to complete EVERYTHING by mid 2011.

Aero: Kazz Sport Type II, modded by Me, JMax Design
Other body mods: Fenders and fender caps, wheel fittment and quarter panel work by Me.
Suspension: K-Sport coilovers, Night Pager RCA's (coming up).
Wheels: Lowenheart LSR 20x9 0, 20x11 +7, black polish finish by me.
Breaks: Front: MKIV TT caliper. Rear: calipers from a 2nd Gen GS300 powdercoated black (coming up).
Engine: Aristo motor swap. Coming early 2011.
Interior: Akabi:Select black/w red stitching custom seats and door panels (in the process). Wrapped Toyota Tundra steering wheel. GS430 shift knob. IS300 gated shifter. Red head liner/pillars.
Sound: Pioneer stereo (still picking one), Pioneer compound speakers, JL audio components, JL audio 12' bass speaker. (coming up)
Other mods: Modded JDM aristo headlights and fog lights, black/polished door handles (in process), custom grille (in process), red LED cluster and instrument panels, CrossRoads 2nd gen clear turn signals.

The exhaust openings were designed for a single fartcan of about 3.5"... I want two 3" polished stainless pipes coming out of each opening. Extended the openings to fit what I wanted and fixed many cracks and chips.

Ready to wetsand as well!

Sideskirts: just repaired the damage and because of the design, I cannot add vents... not like I wanted to anyways. Fitted them as you can see in the earlier pic. Perfect.

Fender caps: I had them off so, why not add a vent, right?

Cutting-in the car

The goods:
Color: 3PO in the Toyota color chip: I am actually going to use a dark grey metallic base to make the color a bit darker. Tought of a candy red but candies are such a pain in the buttocks to take care of; since this is going to be my daily, a solid red will have to do since I do not want to deal with fading.

Researching how am I going to take it there and waiting on the real wheels. I will also be designing my fender vents but haven't decided if I really want to eliminate the side marker since I kind of like it... more photoshop research/design during this week for me to come up with something... maybe a vent design that would allow me to use a skinny side marker... we'll see.

Since I have downtime from bodywork, I started the headlamp mods and fog light mods as well as the LED cluster/instrument panel change form blue to red.

I finished all this in one week (thanksgiving week) since I was off from my real work PLUS I painted my brother's rps13 (complete job as well)... been an exhausting BUT satisfying week.

Will post pics of all that later. Just got out of work, time for wife and kid.

Ti'll next time, hope you enjoyed reading through this, stay tuned for more.

Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm posting this since I finished my headlamps yesterday (basically, had to finish putting one more thogheter) and got started on my foglamps. Even thoug the fogs were intended to be Mode Parfume Stylish Fog Light Prism Sync, after the dollar vs yen shena****ns, I cannot afford to pay about $780+ just for foglamps... even though I REALLY want them bad. But with a wife and kid and house payment, plus currenlty trying to get an SUV for the family, that is out of the question, modded JDM fogs will have to do for now.

Headlamps:
I have JDM Aristo headlamps; I have always liked them and I even cleared the orange piece to make them all chrome but there is something about the MKIV lamps that I have always liked... specially the black MKIV housing headlamps so, why the heck not?
Also, the JDM lamps get yellow really fast even after polishing them or sanding them... forget that. So I decided to clear them and add little details here and there.

MKIV headlamps:
Forum image

Started by taking them appart, sanding and cleaning them (800 first, 1000 second, then used a gray scotchbrite and prepping soap), added a black outline, added some refraction tricks, candy blue over the chrome projector cover, blacking out the inside and clearing the outside.

BTW, in the last pic the lights are OFF. Also, coloring that area of the reflector doesn't affect the color of the light, all it does it gives the impression the headlamp is on when someone takes a picture ;) learned it from an old VIP Style magazine... i think it was in a june or july 2003 DIY. Seen it done with amber, red, green and pink and looks cool too.

Another thing is that I have wired my JDM lamps as the USDM lamps as well: my amber works as a blinker and driving light. I achieved this by modding the USDM blinker socket to fit the JDM headlamp. I like to see the amber in the corner and a white LED bulb as the day-light when I drive and with the black housing, this looks actually pretty awesome.

I will take some pics of the entire lamp lighted up.

With this last update, I am over and out for a bit: still deciding what I want to do with my front fenders... I am thinking of using an LS460 side marker instead of the 2nd Gen GS300 and design my fender vent to accommodate that blinker... very possible this will happen. Also, lots of family things are going on (in-laws anniversary, father in-law's b-day, my dads surgery, other drama stuff, you know, family stuff) so I might not touch this project till saturday yet for only a little bit (thinking on finishing my fog light mods).

So till then, I hope this lil update was of your liking.

Also, lots of family things are going on (in-laws anniversary, father in-law's b-day, my dads surgery, other drama stuff, you know, family stuff) so I might not touch this project till saturday yet for only a little bit (thinking on finishing my fog light mods).

lol you know me well I see. Luckily, my vision and idea is pretty much dead-locked. Maybe changing little details here and there but the main idea is still there, even with the interior.

I know decided to make vents on the fenders and use an LS460 turn signal since I would need to pull the fender anyway to fit extreme offset wheels.

Now I need to find someone who would want the 3 yards of silver neffy wrap I had bought and the 2nd gen clear turn signals lol.

thanks for the comments guys!

I got my wheels in yesterday: +33 on the rear on a 20x11 and +27 on a 20x9 with a 5x112 bolt pattern. I will have them re-drilled to fit 114.3. I still have to do a pull since I wont go lower than -2.2 camber on my rears since I intend to dd this car and my round trip to work is usually 12 ish mi a day: tire wear would be pretty bad.

I expect about 30 to 15 mm of poke all around; perfect for a minor pull.

I'll update the thread with some pics over the weekend. :)

No big plans for power yet but definitely a GTE swap. I am debating at the moment to either go with a full bag system or cups. I worked in the hood this weekend while fabricating a rear spoiler for a miata customer. Here are some pics:

:D Yeah, my wife and I have a very good understanding and she is awesome. I usually work in the evenings after work for 3 weeks (counting saturdays), and 1 week for family and friends activities, dinners, visits, etc. Also, all Wednesdays and Sundays are family time. Works well for me and she is amazing at supporting me during long projects... even though she doesn't like red cars (LOL since this car is going to be red!). My baby boy is still 4 months, I really can't wait till he is 2-3 so I can have him help me with lil stuff and start showing him the ropes :D

Very cool build; love seeing the 147 getting some love. I still think it's the "prettiest" GS style.

Reminds me of the builds I did with my 161 and my brother's 147; what we call "sausage being made..." the process is not pretty, but the results are delicious!

Keep up the great work!

So the time to pick an engine has come. I have been eyeing toyota v8 engines; the one that makes sense to me is a 1uzfe from a gs400. Still researching the electronic part of this swap but i have in mind a custom cluster anyways. Trying to find more info about it. Any of you guys have an idea where would i get the toyota repair manual for such engine?

That has DEFINITELY crossed my mind more than once but motor sets are getting scarce and expensive. Maybe if i find a totaled lsx car with an auto before i find a uzfe motorset i might change my mind.

The only thing it bothers me about a lsx swap is the price of an lsx plus the price of the custom parts to swap it in vs the price of a gs400 motorset and the fab to swap it in.

Also the ls in the gs makes me feel like a waste of an engine since the motor would never be driven like it should. The 1UZFE makes more sense to me for a dd automatic car; plus, the money saved on a uzfe swap could be well spent in the interior or the sound system... still I wish I had the bandwidth to build another gs as a track car: that would definetly have an ls2 or ls7... and I really do miss track driving...

None. I do this in my garage as a hobby and as a side job. My real job is at a Tax and Accounting software company I cannot name as a Sr. RnD/Tech Support agent. Same place damicci works at ;)

if you use the harness from an sc400, you can get a modified supra aem ems that is plug and play.

if you go for a factory ecu i'd probably go with an early 1uz (ls/sc), pre vvti and odb2. seems like the swap would be much easier.

Interesting since i don't plan on leaving the engine stock... I was wondering what harness to get since i could source the harness from an LS or SC. Thanks for that info! Been reading some V8TT builds over in CL and seems like an interesting thing to do...

So what's ya reckon: a stock gen1 UZ, add forged inners, port&polish the head, fab up a custom mani and IC pipes, slab 2xGT28's on that bad boy and then the AEM EMS with a strengthened box. You should be good with a solid 500rwhp/600ft-lb, that should be ok for a daily

modding the uz is expensive, support is weak. if you're looking to do much you may want to look elsewhere.

not really, the 1uz needs a lot of work to hold boost. i would expect to spend $5k just on the bottom end for anything over a few pounds. add engine managment and the actual turbo set up and... you get the idea. more than an ls swap for sure (for equal power), but it's not always about what you make. sometimes the fun is in how you make it.

The more i look at boosting a UZ, the less it makes sense... i could just do an aristo swap and upgrade the turbo, injectors and ems to get close or over 600... which doesnt appeal to me much really since i am not building a race or fast car. Im stiill thinking of a 1uz swap but mainly leaving it stock with the basic of the basic mods. That would make for a nice car a lil bit different in its own way since i havent seen many 1st gen gs's with a UZ swap at least here in AZ.

i'm onboard with the uz swap, just letting you know that if you want to make a lot of cheap power you're barking up the wrong tree. based on your new criteria i think it would be a great swap. i'm wondering if you could source the necesarry 1g aristo/1uz parts and make it a drop in affair. that would be dope imo.

Yea same here! I called venus-auto and they mentioned they could get me one but the wait time is enourmous (almost 8 months)... which makes sense since there is zero demand for that engine...

Unless you guys know a good importer who could get me this engine or could recommend me someone that I could talk to , that would be dope.

Thanks fellas!

I'm debating if I should weld the spoiler to the trunk to make it a one piece (easier) or making a fiberglass spoiler (harder)... if fiberglass, I will have to do a wood or clay prototype like I did for a customer's miata spoiler... fiberglass would allow me to make copies easier, but i really don't intend to sell something unique like that... anyways, bought a new vehicle over the weekend (closed yesterday) and I will be getting a hachi for a paint job (ANOTHER CAR!), PLUS i'm still waiting for the wheel adapters/spacers to do the fender work, so the build will see like a 1 or 2 week pause. I might get to finish modding the new rear tailamps I got, the fog lights and might get to completely clear out the headlight lenses. I will definetly post up the results this weekend since it seems i'm not going to IFO to check out ricer cars.

Thanks for all your support guys, comments like these keep me going!

Im currently spraying an ae86 for a buddy of mine, so the project is on hold. waiting for some lil goodies and news from an upholstery shop to do my seats and headliner.; also piecing the sound system since I have the car apart, this is the best time to start it.
