Odyssey Info

a little back story...currently have a ucf10 I am trying to slowly do up. My family is expanding and growing out of the sedan car market. Needing a van/suv or something with 3 row seating...so hey, I can get an Ody and still stay in the VIP game. I found a 1999 locally that I can get a good deal on.

I'm just wanting someone to school me on them; suspension, wheel sizes, pics, etc etc. I'm probably going to be staying away from body kits. I have zero knowledge on modding them.

thanks in advance.

The 99-04 Odyssey have terrible reputation for failing transmissions.

Either get an early 1st gen 95-98, or a newer 05-09 model.

The downside to the 05+ model is there is no body kit options. Just suspension and wheels. Honda lip kit if you can find one for a decent price.

The upside to 95-98 is there is everything you can imagine available for it. It was made in japan, so they have all the parts available, everything from a carbon fiber hood, to rear camber arms and fuzzy floor mats. Just got to pay some big $$ shipping from Japan.

On a side note, I should mention my motor has about 260K and drives like a champ. No problems whatsoever with the mechanicals. That speaks for itself.

I've always been a wagon fan, but never considered a van until the family extension...and I'm not a large SUV kind of guy. its appearing the 95-98 is the better option...can they be picked up fairly cheap? what motor is it? F or H series? or did they run a V6?

Do any US companies make suspensions or am I going to be mainly sourcing from upgarage and Yahoo Japan?

Hmm I thought you were partial to odyssey's. Well you know I think Previa's are the best. But getting the rear end to sit perfectly is a task. That's the only downfall. With either odyssey your good to get the rear slammed out of the box.

well, the not opening the rear doors is a huge factory to me as I'll be hauling around the children. Won't just be a "show" car.

Berlina and Lowvan...what kit are you running? what suspension? do the 1st gens look decent dropped with stock body? Also, do you have leather? I feel that necessary with kids, easy clean up.

Just so you know, the RA1, is the same engine/suspension/chassis on the front half as the 94-97 Accord, so any CD parts will fit just fine.

I know you guys are talking about the 1st gen RA's, but what are the suspension options for the 2nd gen RL's? I wouldn't mind getting a 1st gen, just a lot harder to find one with low miles and in good shape, while 2004 second gen's can still be found with lower miles and in great shape.

I do believe that the 2nd gen odyssey was called the LaGreat in japan, but still wasn't to find a lot as far as coilovers/bags via google.

Get a gen 1, buy a complte h23 swap for a G and swap it with a fresh heart 40K miles call it a day.

The RL1 aren't as many options and less available (RL1 wasn't as popular as RA1, but neither compare to RB1...)

Here's a snap from an RA3-4 I liked...

Cool. I didn't know they came with an f22. I currently have a volvo 740 turbo wagon, so i have to decide whether to get rid of it for an odyssey now. Or wait a year or so and keep it while adding to my wagon/van arsenal with an odyssey. I'll probably do the late and use the time to really become well versed with the odyssey and which generation i really want. Thanks for the help.

F22 and 98 has F22 Vtec, unfortunately has more problems than 95-97. Transmissions are pretty much bulletproof as long as you do the trans fluid services every 40-50K

Drop in an H23 for a grand or so, bam 190HP :)

What are the problems with the 98's? And are you recommending the h23 over an h22 because of cost or ease of the h23 swap compared to the h22?

I did see a few pics of a guy over on honda-tech that has an ra1 with an h22 swap and a nice snail mounted to the engine :)

H22/H23 is fine,
reason for H23 is more HP and TQ, (with blue top from accord R)

Uses stock A/T transmission so everything is almost bolt-up installation.

H22/H23 offers tons of aftermarket performance (Cams, ECU, Injectors, Turbo/SC etc)

Hell, even an ITB setup would be sick as fawk in an odyssey LOL.

After I get my Ody back from the paint shop, I will be swapping out the F-series for a nice H.

I know nothing of this car. The guy kinda made himself unavailable. ducking in and out and such. I was checking the car and he walked right past me, hopped in and drove off. real nice...

But anyway, I heard of an Ody build...well multiple builds here...And this is the first one that has actually materialized.

My family just expanded and I'm definitely looking into an Odyssey. I found a decent 1st gen but I'm really leaning towards the 3rd gen. I've been lurkn awhile to educate myself on options of doing a mild build because I just can't ride stock. There's lots of awesome Odysseys here so post up more pics for inspiration.

If you're thinking 3rd gen, reconsider just how much you CAN mod it. There isn't anything beyond air intakes and brakes for it. It is not available in japan therefore, there are literally no aftermarket parts for the 05+ odyssey

guys in Chicago are insecure about owning a wagon/van. so it will most likely get sticker bombed. troof! I still get flak for modding a wagon/van. Chicago's import car rules are as follows....turbo or RWD/AWD or ziptied or Honda'd or any combonation of those. it looks like it's getting Honda'd

I am thinking he bought it that way and now he is Honda'ing it out for his own taste. Too bad, it was nice before.

BTW, what is your budget? The new Sienna is sweet but lacks JDM market support but I think done right it would be baller. Plus the new Nissan Quest is the same as the JDM Elgrand and the front can be swapped out. I don't remember who told me that.

Please don't call me a grave digger, but I came across this thread while google searching vip lagreat/ody. I'm convinced w/ the second gen, I know that berlina2k2 mentioned that they have weak transmission :signdammit: and they do since a few of my friends own the second gen TL and ody. Is there any option w/ the trany? also including mentioned earlier that there are a lack of aftermarket parts :turbonoes_3:, well if I end up buying one ,I'll just have to fab some one off type of parts. Thanks again, this thread is inspiring. Oh yeah I don't have family, plan to in the future and that I'm planning to sell my static 2gs slammed on Vienna's. I wonder how my 19's would look on the 2gen ody? Anyways thanks again. I'll be back
