My First 99 Q45 Build

So recently I have been toying around the idea of getting into the "VIP" scene.
I am from Southern California and I've been around cars and motorcycles forever and have customized every ride I owned (mostly building Honda's and turning streetbikes into stuntbikes). So I thought this would be a natural progession since I am getting older and it just doesn't seem right dipping in a Honda any more lol.
Anyways with that said I recently picked up this 1999 Q45 from the original owner clean title and 97k on the odometer.
I've done a little bit of research and kind of have an idea where I wanna go with this and what parts I will be choosing.
I am not building it for car shows or to show off to everyone, its just going to be my semi daily driver and my main theme is building this on a budget which I know it seems to be an oxymoron in this game but I hope to do the scene justice when its all said and done.
Since the maufacturers, parts, brands, wheels sizes, etc is all new to me more or less everything I know to date has been learned by searching through this and other forums and getting advice from my homies already in the game.

Mods to date:
I recently picked up a set of AME's sizes 19x9/10 to roll on. I found a set of reasonably priced Nissan Cima visors on Ebay which I am going to have painted to match the factory color, along with some Bellezza grey curtains to compliment the exterior looks.
I also plan on going with a 3m crystalline blue tint (I believe this color best mimics the mercedes benz blue windows) if anyone can confirm or offer a better suggestion that would be much appricated along with a good local tint shop by the way I am in SD but my parents stay in the IE so anywhere around those surrounding areas. Thats it for now....:runcoold:

Thank you sir, next on my list is suspension, I decided to go w/ coilovers and run it with the cup kit from Platinum down the line just indecisive on the brand. As I stated I want to build a nice Q45 and make use of all parts I pick in regards to bang for the buck. I wish I could do the s13/s14 set up but I don't really have the time with my job to go all out with projects and parts, wish I had that luxury but oh well. So I am pretty set on Megan's anybody have a pic of them installed on 19s?? And with the money I saved choosing the Meagan's I plan on purchasing a kit, hopefully that will also add to a lower stance of my Q.

I know right...being new to the scene I just looked at the top Q45's and seen the common theme was AME's but now I am seeing all these different wheel line ups and I should of got something different haha oh well I can always trade them down the line.
 
 
and for updates and "slamage"  I am still holding my breath to find someone selling their S chassis components so I can have a tunable suspension and be able to slam my Q45. But its not looking good so I guess I'll be ordering the Megan's in the next couple of days.

After browsing through VSC I came accoss this thread.
Just saw these and read up on them, decided to ditch the Megans and look into these for now. Looks like I can run these at a decent height and when I add the cup kit I can further slam out the ride to be layed out when I park it. Seems legit in theory gotta see how these play out.

Yea from the pics it looks to be the best coilover stance I seen so far. I can't believe I never knew about them till now, I mean there no airrunner lol jk but they look legit! Ps seen your ride at extreme autofest, I was having my girl take pics so I can admire your ride and take notes but without jockin to hard hahaha. Thanks for replying to my build thread.

Car looks really clean bro! I just picked up a 97 q45 and I'm new to all this but I'm definitely wanting to go with the whole VIP look. I would like to start off with the visors and curtains. Can you recommend any websites to find them?

I know what you mean I'll always have a love for Honda's though I wont ever not have one in my garage haha but I guess this is where all the tuner heads go when they grow up and more importantly get better paying jobs:biggthumpup:

True, I was just about to order my set until random browsing on this fourm at work brought me upon Max Vip coilovers needless to say I had to get them for myself....Cant wait to install them(PS big thanks to Dan over at Parts Shop Max for all the help)! Although I will say I am hesitant because I love the ride quality oh my stock Q45 oh well at least its not my daily driver.:pat: Now to save up for the cup kit....Back to Top Ramen and Kool Aid:sad: lol

Anyhow how much did the VIP's set you back? I found Ksport of all companys make a coilover set that run just over a grand but a local shop here in az have them for 900. Ksport actually makes a full model specific air suspension kit for our cars for about $2300. I never woulda thought Ksport would make air suspension lol.

$1250 but I also got the subframe riser's for that added clearance...
I am not really into the whole air ride suspension. Although nothing can beat a ride slammed to the ground on bags tucking on some legit wheels. If I had one bad day on bags ie: bags popping; it would ruin my whole experience and piss me off completely so I played it safe and to prevent that from even happening I chose to ride low on coilovers. Its all preference bro, its YOUR car do YOU. Thats always been the underline rule of thumb when it came to building rides in my opinion. 
But thats what these forums are for, for noobs to ask and research what works what doesn't work through other owners trials and errors, get feedback from products others are using and factor all that to how we design our car to look, function, and perform.

after skimming through this thread which was brought to my attention, I will chime in and give VSC some info on the Phantom Cup Kit.
 
First things first, with the Phantom Cup Kit by Platinum VIP, you [B]CAN[/B] drive with air in the cups or without. Unlike Robertua or Bold World or AirForce or ANY other cup kit companies out there, we designed our system to be driven withor without air. Is it recommended? not really but coming from first hand experience (Kennedy with his Aristo) you can absolutely drive with air in our cups. Why is it not recommended you may ask, it's just because if you're riding with air, you're not riding [B]SLAMMED[/B]! LOL JK...
 
Our cups are made of US Grade 60-61T billet aluminum. In addition to our cups, our tanks are also made of the same material. That's why we offer a[B] LIFETIME Guarantee[/B] on our cups and tanks. We also, offer a [B]LIFETIME Guarantee[/B] on the installation if done by Platinum VIP.
 
So what happens when we drive with no air in our cups? 
With no air, the cups act as a top hat that houses your coilover spring. By which it means that it acts like if the cups are not even there.
When your car is aired up, it does play with your spring rate. The more PSI you have, the car is stiffer. But it also depends on what coilover you have as well. 
 
Some pro's on the Phantom Cup Kit....
1. You will never have to worry about bags popping, tearing, or bursting since there are no bags involved in our system. I know some of you ride slammed on bags and have no problem with chewed up sleeves but all I know is that the 2GS has a problem with the normal size bag that rubs up against the control arm unless you get the shorten version.
 
2. Our cups needs very little air to be lifted, to go full up it takes no longer than 5 seconds.
 
3. The Phantom Cup Kit's setup does not rob you of trunk space. Our tank is approximately 14" long, 4.5" wide, 2.75" in height, pretty much it's a size of an amp. Check this out... you can even use the Phantom Cup Kit with NO compressor since our cups barely needs air to lift up!
 
4. The Phantom Cup Kit has a lifetime guarantee for as long as you own it.
 
5. Also with our system, you can hybrid this kit to mimic air bag setup and still be on true coilovers. You can use our cups and use larger lines, bigger tank, manifolds and solenoids. 
 
Here comes the con's....
1. it will not make your car hop or will not raise quick like air bags without air bag components.
 
2. you cannot raise your car 8" high and park tucking half of your 20" wheels.
with the Phantom Kit, depending on coilovers, you can raise the car 3.5" to 5.5" 
 
3. you dont have a 5-9 switch paddle valve switch, you get 2 valve switch.
 
4. when you drive, people wont know you have air inspired suspension since with the Phantom Cup Kit discharges the air in the cabin so you wont here the "[I]psssht psssshhh[/I]"
 
5. in combined with the Phantom Cup Kit, you do need coilovers which adds more $$$ on top of the system.
 
6. we dont have a cool 5 gallon tank that you can decorate, you only get a half gallon rectangular tank that looks small :ugh2:
 
Well in conclusion (i sound like i'm in high school... LOL), UAS/Air Runner vs. Phantom Cup Kit is to each of their own. Some may remember us saying "[I]bags are for fags...[/I]" well it's not. I am Chris from Platinum VIP and[B] BAGS ARE COOL TOO![/B] :biggthumpup: Regardless of if you are riding bags or cup kit, if your ride looks dope, YOUR RIDE LOOKS DOPE![/QUOTE]

I have yet to have any issues w/ my air in the past 5 years of owning it
Only real issue is my current air isn't stiff enough for the height I ride at and there's too much rebound but I'm switching to a coil + air setup soon and hoping to correct that issue

Dope it was about a 30min drive for me. Let me know how that goes we might have to do a group buy haha, cause I got a feeling after my suspension is dialed in to how I want the height at that skidplate will be a MUST!

Change of plans, the homey Brokey said I can have his plate that he built for his Q 
since he jus built some engine mounts to raise his engine /oil pan up a few
So he won't be needing a skid plate anymore

I might look into that now as well

I seen pics of what he's got going on w/ the Q
A-MAZING!!!! work! His attention to detail and work reminds me of those low rider builds where everything is built from the frame up. Talk about a complete rebuild! 
 
He says it'll be awhile before he brings it out but he did get his new coil setup there other day :biggthumpup:

So as for the updates: Well while my car was is still in 4x4 mode I took advantage to work on it. Changed out an o2 sensor and did an oil change along w/ topping off & checking all the fluids.

I hope with this next mod that I don't loose interest and/or props on my build but I am sure there will be some hating. Picked up my kit today and dropped it off at my boy's shop, Express Autobody in Pomona, to get it painted/installed as well as a few minor touch ups on the body. It should be done by the weekend and the wheels & the suspension will be installed sometime by early next week.

lol yea I'll be the first to admit it wasn't as good of a fitment as I would of hope for but w/ some modifications and a lil sweat it wasn't too bad of a headache with the install.
I don't regret buying the kit however I won't be one pushing for rep/knockoff kits. It was for me and me alone. I'll say this though... the headache of the install was nothing in comparison to headache I dodged if I was saving for and shelling out the cash for a real kit and still trying to get by in life.

Oh ok I see what your saying. It wasn't that serious for me the kit is what it is. My car was purchased pre owned so obviously for a 10+yr old car there were stratches and dents along the bumper so this was a win win for me as far as replacing them & giving it a different/newer look ie: jdm fogs

Anywho I am excited to my car back tomorrow & then getting it lowered I will post updated pics & feedback is welcomed both positive & negative. Thanks

^ Gotcha, I am still rockin the OEM bumper with faded paint and rock chips but I am waiting to do bigger things with the front bumper instead.  It more motivating to see the ugly bumper every day and say "Damn I NEED to Hustle".

Car is out of the body shop didn't get a chance to install the window visors since I had an appointment to lower my car today and who would of thought those dam curtains take so long to install.:pat:
So I threw on the wheels and drove down to see Kennedy from Platinum VIP and now I am awaiting coilover install.

Thank you sir, having your Y33 as my wallpaper was all the motivation I needed since I first wanted and purchased a Q45. It is far from being a showstopper but it fulfills my goals and well see what the future holds for her.

Homey, I aint even tryna build my car to be a show stopper. My goal for my car was to always jus build something nice I ride around town w/

Loving the PBM coilovers by the way! I must say at first glance upon picking up my Q, it wasn't as low as I envisioned but once they pulled it off the lift (which I must add was a mission in itself haha :pat: ) I couldn't of been any happier!

As for the kit lol yea I knew purchasing it wasn't really following in the footsteps of a true VIP build and I know the rear is a little off, in my experience fiberglass has been a hit or miss experience but doesn't bother me. As I stated I built this car with a budget and a basis of not building a show car but just a nice daily driver.
Being around the modified car scene I always looked at cars like this: if its not being built to show off or place in car shows why judge it? This car was purchased for one reason...I wanted a car that I felt my age in, being 27 driving around in a gutted built eg or "rice rocket" to the unknown didn't just feel right haha.
So I looked around and with the money I had saved I saw that I could build a nice and decent compared to most rides in this 1999 Q45. 
My real passion is in tuning Honda's. This is my daily, yes I drive it that low it scrapes over everything and I drive it real slow. My true build that won't have any "knockoff" parts is going to be a NSX that I am currently saving up for. That is my real passion and what I will show off.
Sorry just had to get that off my chest I knew the kit would be controversial and knew it was coming and totally understand everyone's statements and reaction to my Q45 but at the end of the day its just my mild and modest daily driver.

Man, truth be told you wont please everybody on here & someone will always have something negative to say... If you're on a budget, just do what you can. Nobody can afford all types of expensive stuff & even people who can afford it sometimes are not willing to pay for some stuff, however, do try to save & buy good stuff, though I know how it is when a person's not 100% into something. If for some reason you change your mind about VIP & want to be into it for real just remember one thing... if you're not upgrading, leave it alone (that can be subjective sometimes but still a good rule I learn from someone on here.)

i dunno, I dont see whats wrong. All i see is "he got what he wanted, and got it all very quick" Which to me, goes a lot further than someone who just talks with no walks. Maybe its just me not giving a shiz any more. I am sure it kills industry, people buy after market stuff all the time. We are all guilty of it!! 

Look at the people who buy non oem parts for replacement, cause its cheaper. So to all who are homoistic about knock off kits, dont be a contradicker when you purchase a fram oil filter, or a auto zone half shaft instead of buying the oe replacement.

How much lower can these coils go? Considering the PBM's just need to make sure they go low enough !

I know lol me too but unfortunately I came across a string of bad luck on my build. It is so frustrating to see this build thread and how far I came along only to have all these set backs. Well after venting haha and realizing stuff happens in life. I am taking a lil time off with this and will be comming back better then ever in a couple months time:biggthumpup:

I daily my M... fuck spending all this money & not pushing it. Nice pick up though... I was thinking about buying a gas saver (New elantra) since none of the vehicles in my house are good on gas but I backed off of it cuz it just doesnt make sense financially... even if the car is cheap... I'd b out of a good amount of cash that could've been collecting interest, then paying insurance on it & prolly start doing some mods on it anyways, lol... my beef was gas (15 MPG city on my M & about 16 on my TT Z32) but whatever, it's not that expensive & ppl in europe have it much worse than we do... also would u rather walk 15 miles or pay $3.70?!?!?!
 
I dont know what ur needs are but imo u should've gotten a reliable ek (since u love those things anyways) or something along those lines nd called it a day...

Well a little update here, kinda had a string of bad luck with the car lol.
I guess driving this to and from LA to SD kinda took its toll so I pretty much just forgot about this ride and the build and carried on with my everyday life.
I still browsed the forums and after seeing a couple of builds progress on here, that never leave my mind haha, inspired me to drive on and I fell back in love with my ride with a new found interest and motivation.
So I decided to bring her back to life....

It's been a while so I am going to hit the ground running, dropped by PBM today picked up RUCA's, front tension rods, and ordered new set of springs for the front for a lower stance.
Been had some parts lying around waiting for install GT grill, chrome pillars, Hood emblem, cone filter, and got my wheels redone by WheelFlip.

In the next upcoming weeks, in this order I plan to:
[ ] Upgrade the suspension and Cup kit install
[ ] Paint job not sure what color yet :pat:
[ ] Redo the interior based off what color I choose on paint...suggestions?? lol

Been a while so I thought I'd bump this dusty old thread with updates haha...
Car's been on the back-burner again but this time due to me receiving notice of another upcoming deployment and me prioritizing my life around the possibility of deploying again.

So anyways onto the updates:
Since I am still waiting on my suspension in the meantime I thought I'd switch up the wheels and picked up these 18's (sorry for the teaser pic but nothing special yet just wait for whats to become of them)

so right away dropped them off to be step lipped to 19's so i can rock a more aggresive stance.

As for other updates, my clear headlights came in and I am still waiting on my LED foglamp and taillight projects to be completed...probably another couple weeks. Hopefully until I leave I can get as much done with the car and to enjoy it 
ie: suspension work, paint, interior, and of course these new wheels

So worse news ever.......
just right now I found out that these wheels were stolen from my shop!
Yeappp I wasn't there and the only worker at the shop was our painter and he was in the booth spraying. When he came out he noticied the the front door unlock and open and these newly done wheels JACKED!

I hate to pull this card but the reason I wasn't at work today I was getting evaluted at the VA hospital for my TBI and PTSD I suffered through my multiple deployments. And while I am getting checked out for the f'd up sh*t I endurred overseas in the army I get some f'd up shi*t done to me here stateside...eff it is what it is.

Anyways if any one can please do me a favor and keep an eye out. Pretty studpid cause these are the only wheels in this sizing and yea but.....................................

I still have the center caps so proving these are mine is no biggie just finding them.

I doubt the person knows what these wheels really are so I am sure they are going after 300c's, Magnums, Camaro's, etc owners that DUB style since nothing is VIP about Pomona.

Surprisingly I am taking this in good stride, calmer then most would assume...I think the homies are secretly placing bets to how or when I explode in anger. Haha
Well I did what I could put the word out, filed a police report and checked with local businesses/shops to see if anyone tried to pawned them or tried to dump them off.
I am fairly confident that I will get these wheels back whether it be in through Allah helping me recover these wheels or me hustling the funds for a new set to finish up my Y33 (which is kind of hard with no "real job":shrug:).
But whats done is done and gotta keep moving forward in life no matter what is thrown at me.

 First off I wanna say thank you soo much for your feedback on my stolen wheels... means a lot to know I am not in this alone.
But yea those aren't mine I recently was at VR a couple months ago and did see them before those were rebarrelled. 
I did call them to verify the specs and how they acquired them, doesn't seem like mine I do still have my center caps and do have hope that someone out there will help me find my wheels. Reward will be given to any individual who provides in the assistance of the recovery of my babies!:dance:

yea only description I got was from the painter who saw the thieves at the last moment when they drove off and that it was a newer body style, grey in color, Dodge Neon and a punk rocker type chick with tattoos and half head shaved style haircut with no clear description on the male...so yeaaaaa

Yea didn't mention it and its hard to determine from the IG pic but I went with Diamond white, nothing crazy just my favorite color for cars. To me it does enough with out doing too much.

Painted the inside of the doors today just a slow assembly going hit up Battle Version and see what I can do with the fronts then I may decide to go more extreme in the rear but won't unless I can semi match it up with the fronts. Never knew they were located here in Pomona either.

Im still confused as to how this can be achieved.

Without custom lips 17" lmgt2s cannot be stepped up to 18s. They are already stepped which means the face is effectively 16 inches. In order to step them up to 18s, a double stepped lip 16inches to 18inches would need to be made.

so the step lip creates a bigger wheel diameter even if the wheel face is not effective 17"? am i understanding this correctly

Relocated the front wire harness and flared out the front fender pillar for more clearance 
Tubbedthe rear quarter panels
welded the front hood squirters for a shaved clean look

 so today everything but the rear bumper is painted...turns out after I flared the rear quarter panel it left me with about an inch gap I had to close so the bumper will get done later this week. While doing so I used the time to even out the lines since the fitment on the rear of the kit was off.
Still waiting on my LED fogs and tails hopefully can have a solid update by weds

tues is "final" assembly
weds dropping it off at battle version for front lca modifications
thursday paint the mirror signals that I molded on and the rear bumper and install
fri install my exhaust try and dial in the suspension best I can
sat detail the heck outta it
sun autofashion

hopefully yall won't see me in my girls Lexus lol and I can take this... either way I am excited and tired!

So I kind of been ignoring this thread for a while just been blown away  with the reaction my car has received since I took it to AutoFashion. I value anyone's and everyone's opinion and take on my car, so seeing it on social media site's and blogs has been overwhelming.
I really do not know what to say...Big Sean said it best from it went from surreal to sorreal.
Its crazy cause I don't even see my car like that, I am my biggest critic...My cars flaws outweigh its mods in my opinion haha.

I just wanted to take the time to say that this build wouldn't be where it is without this forum. I been  lurking here for a min before I joined seeing how I would/could build a  Vip styled platform. I remember being in Afghanistan just looking at  everyone's thread soaking up all the knowledge I could so when I finally  picked up this Q45 I would have a basic idea of what direction I was  going to go.
So to all the vets in the game who take time out of your day  to answer a members question or share the knowledge and experience you have I just want to say Thank You!
To all the blogs that showcase coverage of events/shows and expose cars that I wouldn't have a chance to see a big thanks also!
Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to recognize everyone for getting me to this day when I myself am being recognized.

I know I need a car cover anyone by chance have an OEM one they wanna sell??
Next on my list is to start tidying up things here and there on the Q along with some parts I still need to install.
Also gonna start messing with my rear bumper trying to modify it so that my kit is leveled evenly.
Future mods maybe interior and air ride depends how long I keep her for...:shrug:

and you should totally do the interior. I didn't do too much to mine, just swapped everything to black and sueded the headliner.  I feel like no car is complete without a fresh looking interior.

Ed you have a y33 right? How did you get the headliner out?

That was in my g50 lol. It's still on the to do list with the y33.

But I'm assuming it comes out just like any other head liner.  Pull down your lights, pillar plastics, and pop the clips/Velcro that holds the liner up.

Ohhh ok. Well I've done a few other cars, I haven't tried my y33 yet. My concern is just how to get it out of the car without removing the windshield. In the g50 did you have to remove a seat or anything?

na man. i've never pulled a windsheild to do a head liner, ever. And i've done more than a few.   i just reclined the seats a bit, and took it out the front passenger side door.

Yes the front passenger door is just wide enough to get them in and out. I made the mistake of taking mine out through the driver side rear passenger door, and kind of cracked the board a bit, you live and learn

So shout outs  to him for handling this matter very professionally...this could of  went down in any of the million and one possibility of ways. So yea  there you have it thanks again to everyone for spreading the word it  help me recover them!

HAHA at the end of the day I got caught slipping that's all... in the end what was mine ended up returning to my possession.
What he does to the crackhead who sold him my stolen wheels is no longer my concern. Call it street justice or whatever all I know is I got to keep it moving! Things happen for a reason and the timing of the recovery of these wheels was perfect.

By the way calling the cops would of been a smart move on the owner's part seeing how there is no real proof to the "common man" that these were really my wheels (ie: serial number) and it probably would of dragged on to civil court.
So I guess some intimation played a part in my favor.:saiyancrunks:

Nah, when our shop got broken into, we had a list. and some pics to match. I found it on CL, reported, busted. got shit done they went to jail in same day. Unless one day is too long, then yes! :)

When I called and came to the shop inquiring about my stolen wheels I played dumb and was asking if I was just some craigslist buyer. Once I knew that the shop owner knew how rare these wheels were and how almost impossible it was to find and replace the center caps I told him I was going to get the cash out of my car. I went into my car grab the center caps and walked into the store my friend recorded that don't know why or why for just that duration. Maybe he thought it would make a funny worldstarhiphop video well nothing happened shop owner knew these were my wheels once I showed him the police report, my pics of the wheels, and obviously the original center caps.

If he didn't obliged I would of raised hell and made sure I ran his business to the ground haha trust!

It is a "mercedes blue" tint but no not from AF didn't know they offered that...pretty cool

It was so bad I wanted even lowballers to hit me up so at least I could feel that someone wanted my car.
Now at least I can drive it and ***** it around some local shows instead of it just sitting collecting dust.

imho, without parting it out or selling for a sizable loss, its not gonna move for a while. its just the nature of the game.

Yea I figured but just wanted to see what I could get for it. I won't part it out or take a crazy loss I have no problem keeping it I just don't drive or enjoy the car like I should. I have the number I want for it in my head but everyone's reaction was that apparently its not drive-able haha...So I figured I would throw air on it and drive it at the very least.
I am not tripping on the money loss I don't see car modifying as investments but more of a passion and hobby.
It's my vice in life and have been modding everything since I first got my license. Guess I need a break now from everything I suppose.

honestly I love it and I am still figuring it out lol but it eliminated a lot from the trunk and was a fairly easy install and the end result was a super clean and minimal set up.
