Secret offsets...

Why do some people who know the offsets of their own wheels dont disclose them... l want to know what do they gain from that.

I know some wheel manufacturers dont disclose offsets but I'm talking about people that know their offsets & just dont want to share.

Thanx ahead of time.

I guess it is a right of passage or something. Like they put in time and money to get it right and it should be easy for you to just walk onto the scene and get it right the first time. I don't have wheels yet and I have encountered the same thing. I am not justifying this, but I do think you will respect the style and stance more if you did your homework and got the fitment that works for you. There is a lot of information here on how to figure out offset.
If you want to be lazy, troll the for sale section...
Edit- Excuse me for addressing you as if you were a noob...

i don't think too many people have done that since like 08...

but it came down to people just being cookie cutter and just jacking other people's time effort and hardwork research and measuring. it is kind of annoying when you have to pioneer something and someone just bandwagons on your hardwork... but there are so many cars now with varying specs, no one really cares anymore. i haven't seen that shit in years.

Thnx for the reply, I'm very good... actually, I'm great at offset measuring, guesstimating, etc. I did a lot of reading & research to learn it nd I help lots of people with offsets, here & on other forums and I consider myself an "offsetitian" lmao... so I'm not asking because I need to know about an offset, I just encountered someone who says he's not disclosing his offsets & it just struck me as odd. I only been into cars for like 2-3 years so I guess I am a noob.

Ok, thnx brain... so it is in essence because ppl used to put hard work tryng to figure out a perfect fitment, but nowadays that shit's out the window right? I was just dumbfounded man & I was asking why would he not tell us his offsets & I think they were thinking I was being a dick or something but I really wanted to know why... it still doesnt make that much sense, especially if the people concealing the offsets give u the widths & pix of their ride...

LOL!!

In Japan, they don't share anything other than the widths because it is competitive (like 9 of 10 featured cars in the mags only list the widths).
Its the same here. If you have stock fenders, its no big deal. That info is out there if you know where to look (as mentioned, the F/S section). But if you put in the work measuring the inner clearance for a nice width, suspension adjustments in order to get the "perfect" camber, all done to compliment the body work, you might not want to make it that easy for the next guy with the same car in the same color who lives 10 minutes away from you.

I could see both sides. I personally rather help out but I understand why some wouldn't. If you are not going to share, at least be helpful in some way where the person can be educated on how to figure it out for them selves.

I am still trying to figure it out. As far as inner clearance, is that reference to the distance between the mounting surface and suspension components?

inner clearance is to anything that will obstrust the innner edge of the wheel; sometimes suspension, sometimes body.

secret offsets are super gay.

I've shared offset information for the wheels I've had, but a lot of guys still continually question if it will fit or not.

AGI: I think it would be the other way around. If someone has stock fender or that looks stock, they would want to keep it secret. everyone sees some major work done will say obviously its a low number or a mid number with a wide wheel.

it is harder to figure out the perfect # to tuck them by one 1mm versus just order something aggressive and "pull that fcuka" out til it clears.

i have to do alot of that stuff...figure out what people wants, some of them don't want to bodywork and pulled if it is newer cars. they are willing to trim or just roll. so i have to measure it and figure it out til i used up that last 1mm because they will not be happy if their brand new set of 3k+ wheels scratch um first day.

in the past i had to special ordered wheels just for 5mm (less than 1/4") less aggressive difference although i have one set instock.

there is no such things as "guessimate". wheels is too expensive to fcuk them up, all the multipiece wheels are build to order so i like to make the best out of them.

https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=485008574893

after all that still not done yet. their bbks, their back wheel clearence, their nagisa autos etc...

word. dead flush/tight tuck on stock body are way harder to size than over aggressive + body work, even more so when certain geometry is desired vs. "that's what happened when i dropped it".

When I see something that interests me rim/offset I ask. Mainly because I am new to the whole game considered VIP, I do appreciate the help I've received to this point from Waijai. But I have to agree that rims are a major purchase and to get them and it not be "right".....ouch

I don't mind searching and reading to find what would be close to my desired fitment...but I just can't seem to understand the measuring and math involved. It could also be because I haven't sat down with pen and paper and figured it all out.

You could also look at it as a form a flattery if someone asks you for your offsets. They are aknowledging your work and knowledge.

When I had the LS I kept my offsets a secret. I feel that a lot of work goes into picking offsets to get the right stance, there is a learning curve involved for sure. I took the time to figure it out and I feel people should do their own work and learn for themselves. If you want guidance there are people here to answer those questions to help you find your own answer as what will work for you. It upsets me that some people will notice something nice then copy it and not put any imagination or thought into it. Why even mod a car then?

You're close.

The fronts are +18, rear is +23, may be off by couple MM, but it's right about there. Then I have 7mm f / 5mm r spacers, so effectively 19x9 +11 and 19x10 + 18. The rims clear the fully rolled fenders by about a business card in the rear, more in front but only cause I put more camber.

I typed out a nice response to this thread but was automatically logged off before I could post it.

Bottom line, why would I help a competing wheel company?

The offsets I run are an evolution of the EIGHT sets of wheels I've had on the GS. Without modifying another GS in exactly the same way, my offsets are irrelevant to some extent.

Nobody taught me how to figure this stuff out. My expertise has value; if you're good at something, you don't do it for free. Ask a doctor, an architect, or an athlete.

IMO....I think it's lame when people don't share offsets...like it's some ancient secret mystery in which the code to the universe is unlocked (LOL,LOL,LOL....you get my point)!!!

Sharing offsets to help a fellow enthusiast or newbie to me is a good thing! Emulation to me is really the greatest and humbling form of flattery!!!

I think that helping others makes you a better man in the end....not trying to stay above, or one up on others in the untouchable elite offset club!!!

In closing, I look at it this way!!! If I work out some sick offsets that look awesome...I have already proved my point, so if you want to know, I'll tell you, cause if you do it also..... it will just motivate me to take it up another notch!!!

It's just how I feel about the subject!!!

I feel you man....to each his own!!

I just find it pretty amusing when someone posts pics of their new aggressive or custom wheel set-up, so everybody can admire it (and trust me, if your being honest...you post for exactly that reason....so people can admire it)..and can accept all the compliments and admiration....yet when it comes to those same guys that just complimented your set-up and gave you props asking you how you did it, or if you can let them know so they can try and do it.........you clam up, or just ignore their posts (that's the lameness I'm talking about)!!

i have no problems sharing pics of build progress but when it comes down to it, its the thought, time, devotion that goes into some builds...i can respect withholding certain information...certain builds are like recipes...some recipes are the same as others and some have secret sauces...i spent a lot of time and money to get my car to look right, why would i just tell another person exactly how i did mine and have a carbon copy?

besides, theres a lot more that goes into some of the cars here than just offset...there's fender pull, roll, cut, flare, camber, tire size, etc.

So, by Gorman's reasoning, we should all be entitled to the ingredients and recipe for Coca Cola so we can make our own?

How about the Colonel? Should he post his "11 herbs and spices" so we can all make that delicious chicken at home?

This is one of those topics like religion. I'm not going to change your mind, and you're definitely not going to change mine!

I guess my point is this guys.......it's just wheel offsets to a car...LOL,LOL,LOL!!

You guys comparing it to Dr's working for free, coca cola ingredients and the KFC recipes....is like comparing a pea to a planet!!!

All of the comparisons are for things that people and corporations make a profit and living off of.....your perfect wheel offset is not that big of a deal in the scheme of things......believe it Bro...LOL!!!

I mean really....if a sick offset is your claim to fame in life...and makes you feel like your really "WINNING" in life....then by all means Bro...Shhhhhhhhhhh!!!LOL,LOL,LOL

And hey...please don't think I'm a jerk or knocking anyone that keeps their offsets secret...that is your right....but it's also my right to think that doing that is LAME!!! LOL,LOL,LOL!!

I laugh at guys that do that or won't tell their offsets....it's funny to me :smiley-rofl:!

Think what you want, but I'm an Engineer, and I make wheels for a living - it's important, it pays my mortgage. Should I also post the FEA (finite element analysis), engineering drawings, and CNC programs? Some of us take this s#it very seriously... it's a career and a passion... and some of us are damn good at it.

Don't think because some of us are into cars that we're not educated. Perhaps when you're older you'll 'get it.' Frankly, you're basically saying "what you do is simple and unimportant, there is little value to it," which is rather insulting.

Might I ask what you do for a living? Did you have to go to school or teach yourself to obtain the skills needed to be successful in your profession?

I completely understand your point of view, Bob....but only since you're a wheel manufacturer. Beyond that, I don't get it at all. Considering wheel offsets are specific to the actual vehicle based on fender modification, they're only base guidelines. So to me, they're as relevant as you telling me the width of your wheels. They're far from being on the same level as CNC programs, CAD drawings, etc. Those things are far more important to your business than actual offsets that you cut the wheel to. Anyone with the desire to figure out what offset they really want/need can figure them out with a few simple tools. Whether or they choose to do so is obviously on them.

I don't have a car with crazy offsets. If I did, I would have no problem sharing them. Why? Because, 99% of the time, people asking don't have the time, money, and skill required to pull off what most of you guys are running. Hell, I bet telling them what your specs are will probably scare them away.

SoCalSC4....I am in no way trying to insult anyone, so I apologize if you feel insulted, but not for what I said...but because I am on the forums to learn, enjoy, and have fun in the lifestyle....not to upset people!!!

Again...the things you listed are like comparing a apples to oranges!!! Please keep this thread in context....were not talking about rocket science or cad drawings for new wheel designs and what metals you use for a new prototype wheel.....were talking about someone posting a car with custom wheels on it, and someone asking what the offsets are (nothing more...nothing less)...this is what I am talking about, and to me it's not a big deal!!!

Also, I'm 41 yrs old...and I build/rebuild custom wheels (and I'm very passionate about what I do also)....and for the record...if revealing offsets puts a dent in your revenue...then maybe you should change profession Sir...because every quality american wheel manufacturer has no problem revealing their offsets to the general public (and I'm not talking about the 3rd party wheel companies that get their wheels cut (private labeled) from the companies that actually have the machines to cut them).

I understand what you're saying, and I see your point; it's just that most people ask.... just for the sake of asking, apparently, and that I don't understand.

Those other wheel manufacturers - 90% of them are making wheels to the lowest common denominator - they make one or two widths and offsets per diameter and need to maximize the applications available so they can sell in volume. It certainly behooves them do disclose this info. I am on the other side of the business, the custom one-off stuff. Figuring out and understanding those offsets and fitments give me a competitive advantage - I can do and create the set-ups others can't.

In fairness, most of my customers are professionals, entrepreneurs, athletes, or celebrities. They don not ask about or care about what offset their wheels are - they depend on me to give their vehicle that certain look. The customer with the new S63 isn't searching the internet for offsets.... he's busy making money.

So, at the end of the day, my customers and dealers don't ask for offsets, and I'm not inclined to be the 'free offset information source' of the internet. If they're buying a set of my wheels and they want to know the offsets - I'll certainly share that. Otherwise, I'm under no obligation to give this away. I spend hours arranging to measure cars, often traveling good distances to spend two hours measuring brake calipers, fenders, etc. on one car. I have a huge library of this data, from AE86s to the mighty Bugatti Veyron!

Interesting that you are in Bethlehem... I lived at 450 High Street as a younger lad! Big scary Victorian house that had bats in the upper floors.

keeping valuable information like offsets a secret only hurts the community! i can understand if the community was HUGE and more people understood the basic concept of fitment but they dont. in my opinion this is a major reason why the scene hasnt grown as expected here! we need more meets and more team players!! fuck the bullshit!

Has anyone seen people scratch off or peel the info stickers that come on most japanese wheels? I always wondered if people do that. I can understand people with custom wheels not giving away their offsets but I've seen people sell these custom wheels without knowing themselves either. How come they (manufacturer) don't even disclose to their customers the offset that they went with.

Don't think because some of us are into cars that we're not educated. Perhaps when you're older you'll 'get it.' Frankly, you're basically saying "what you do is simple and unimportant, there is little value to it," which is rather insulting.

Might I ask what you do for a living? Did you have to go to school or teach yourself to obtain the skills needed to be successful in your profession?

i really dont understand your argument..what does your profession have to do with some one asking you what the offset on your car is? how is having a nice offset being "exclusive"...thats why we have so many ugly ass cars and builds in this whole "stance" community...everyone is just trying to be "exclusive" and "set the bar higher" by number chasing for the lowest offset....people ask for an offset because it gives an idea as to how much work you put in...if 10+25 is common, and youre rocking a 10-20, they know man this guy put in a lot of work..its not like theyre gonna turn around and magically fit a 10-20

If you see a vehicle that made it known and is obvious that fender work was performed to get the wheels to fit... Does it even matter if you know the offset of the wheels if the CAR/FENDERS where customized to fit the wheels based on all types of parameters like suspension geometry, tire size and suspension type... it's like Pepsi giving Coca Cola their recipe... Do your own thing and figure out what you want to accomplish... :rules:

Because if you own a certain car you should KNOW what fits flush (a straight edge, ruler, simple calculation, www.1010tires.com and 5 minutes). How much you want to go beyond that point is strictly up to you... :saiyancrunks:

some of you guys take this too serious both ways.

If a person doesn't want to disclose, ok go find out for yourself and no need to laugh at them for not wanting to tell. They have their reason to not tell.

Also disclosing your offset isn't as important as some people say but it is your right to disclose the offset or not.

No need for mockery and being mad over it...lol

As for me I don't really tell mine, since than it might make someone into getting the wrong offsets for their LS430 and not knowing, since my fenders are radius.

yeah after looking at the used rim forum and what others post you can get a rough idea of what specs you could run. However after a certain point it doesn't matter once redoing the fender/quarters comes into play. Some people aren't up to that either because of money or they're scared too. Like someone mentioned before I see that keeping offset secret on fitting wheels with little to no modification to fender makes sense.

at the end its all up to the person to give it out or not. Sometimes you can just look in between the spokes and find the specs printed on a little sticker from the manufacturer.

I know there has been threads about this before...

its just people dont want to have wheels that stick out to far, or need big spacers. There is a basis of what fits and what doesnt. You start at 0 and go from there. And i dont mean 0 being the offset.
Best way to learn? take your stock wheels and buy some spacers till the rim is flush or further out where you want it. then add what you put on and buy the formula
