Parts Shop MAX got the production prototype parts in! I know a lot of you have been following in the build thread and were looking forward to seeing these. Originally I wanted to debut the new parts at the AF show, but the van is being painted right now slightly behind schedule so I could not make it.
The Y33 VIP spec coilovers will feature the same performance as our Competition Coilover system, and the style is the same as our Pro coilovers which will debut around new year. The pricing should be coming in slightly higher than the $1000 pricing on the Comp. coilover.
We will get together with BrokeY33 to do final testing before releasing them in a couple of months.
He has been running our S13 Competition Coilovers for some time now with many other parts converted or fabricated to make them work, so this dedicated bolt on Y33 specific application will be really nice for those who want to go really low without any extra hassles or expense.

what's the difference? just y33 tophats front and s14 tophats rear? any chance of custom spring rates?

If it were possible, I believe its too expensive even with all used S13 components and a set of new top hats.
The pillowball upper mounts are the most expensive part of the coilover system, so it would make more sense to get the complete coilover system new and skip all of the unneeded s13 conversion parts.
The difference is the uppers and also the front lower mount that welds on to the Original Y33 Spindle and accomodates the OEM sway bar, ABS wire and Brake line.
Custom springs are no problem.

i was under the impression that the guys in japan that run the s chassis setup do so for the additional camber as well as the ride height. any input on this?
either way, i'm sure everyone appreciates the effort for the community. they look great, and after talking to josh i'm sure they'll function as well as they appear.

Thanks, Parts Shop MAX USA and Japan both worked hard on the collaborative development of a beautiful copper and gold finish to distinguish the new coilovers from the standard yellow and orange found in the drift parts line.

because the Y33 front upper is sooo much bugger than the S13, we made the camber adjuster slots really long, so I think there is plenty of camber to be had with the new design. We'll see how the actual camber degree compares once they are mounted.

I don't really seek out cars for development because historically if the demand exists the enthusiasts come to me with requests for a certain application over and over again until its ovbious to us that the demand out there makes the development a necessity.
I had a customer purchase our Lexus SC JZZ31 coilovers recently for a GS, I am not sure what he did to make it work, do you have any knowledge of similarities and differences? Im sure we can find out ourselves if we get the car in the shop.

The JZZ3X coilovers bolt onto the JZS147 (1st gen GS) I believe, but the length of the shock might be different. The JZS16X front suspension is very similar to the front of the JZZ3X. The rears would need a smaller top hat and a different bottom mount. I think there's a market for short and stiff coilovers made for driving low for the Lexus owners too.

You know, it would be reaaaaaly easy to make the Y33 ones work with Y34's.... Fronts almost the exact same thing, rears are different though, springs and shocks are mounted independent of each other. And if you make it for Y34, it will just about fit F50 which fronts are again about the same as Y33, and F50 and Y34 rears are about the same.
Basically, Y33, Y34 and F50 fronts almost identical. Y34 and F50 rears almost identical.

i think i should get a discount on shipping from you not attending the meet on sunday, as i was planning on purchasing the ruca/toe combo for the s14 to save on shipping.

Thanks for the compliments guys! The whole point of doing the y33 application is to give you guys what you want.
So going with that theme if there is demand for a hybrid s13 y33 setup we will make it happen.
If there are customers for the other Infiniti and Lexus cars we will make it happen, all you guys need to do is bring us rides for measuring sessions.
We will make sure to support all VIP platforms with suspension that allows you to drive all day long with the same perfect fitment that some can only get while parked.
The coilovers are already equipped to ride stiff and low with the 10/8 springs. Brokey33 has already experimented with our other spring rates on the front and back and eventually went back to 10/8 for the best ride quality while riding low.
I agree with him because I drove his car.
New shocks will be available for $100 ea.

To be exact you cut the strut tube 43mm above the knuckle, and weld the front lower mount around its base to the knuckle and through the holes in the side of the front lower mount to the old strut tube, so its welded in 5 places on each side.

we will support all VIP cars that have a customer base behind them, just call us to schedule a measuring session and we'll give you the prototype suspension for free
I was just talking with Eisuke san in Japan and he says the VIP segment is growing there and that some of our recent multilink arms and rods we are developing for 350Z, Silvia is also applicable to president, and cima Y34, F50 - I'd like to see for myself - and make some changes in the arms so that thay are adjustable to give the severe camber some desire to obtain their fitment

I'm doing my "car" budget right now. What is your rough estimate as to when these will be available? And how long until you have the exact price nailed down?
Looks like a great product. Would seem to slot right in between Megan and JIC/Insurance price wise, but with the quality of the higher end products. Well done!

I dont know for sure on price and time until they are almost here. But January things should be solidified.
Thanks to Chrispy for coming down for a measuring session on the JZS 16X today. The rear end is something that is quite a pain in the rear lol, but we have some special plans for the GS coilover design that will surely make everyone happy.

This is awesome. I've always admired Part Shop's involvement with the community, and coming out with this is just great.

I would like to see PBM make S-chassis Ruca to add more camber. And if yall planning to make Z32 front up control arm so I can add my camber on my G50

Its actually pretty easy to get more Negitive camber out of the MAX RUCA by taking the lock nut out from between the adjuster and the threaded tube on the arm, also the threaded tube could be ground shorter on the current RUCA v4. I've never seen anyone need more than that much negitive camber but you tell me, im not quite the VIP expert yet but learning.
Other companies making Z32 FUCA already correct?
Now after the measuring session last night on the JZS 16x GS Aristo I have dug up all the drift tengoku mags I have on the car and it looks like they are hot on some really high KG spring rates because the car is Fing huge. 326 power is running 50KG F 28 KG R
Racing gear coilovers seem to be a popular choice for DRIFT with spring rates of 24F 20R but I think I want to stick to 18F 16R because our current SC / Soarer rates are 18/12 which rides pretty good when its dumped without being jarring on the street however the rear end on the GS is much bigger then SC. Opinion on spring rates for VIP status GS is welcomed.
Also it seems that the GS needs a knuckle modification (to the gooseneck connecting to the upper control arm) so that the car can drop lower and not lay on the upper control arm And it will prevent the need for cutting a hole in the car to keep the upper control arm from hitting the chassis
which is right up our alley because we have years of experience modifying knuckles.
This will correspond with the roll center adapters to make the car handle the way it should while riding low.

You guys are brilliant. I wish you'd make UCAs and coilovers for Miatas.. ;)
It seems the options are utter garbage, regular junk, over priced mediocrity, and race setups that don't go low.

Thank you Dan for catering to the VIP scene! There is a lot of us who want better suspension designed to ride low but there aren't too many options. 326 Power's coilovers for the 16 Aristo has the adjustable top hat in the front to move the shock away from the knuckle. That looks like it definitely works!

I saw that in DT, the key is to have a thick top plate with recessed screws because the jzs16x has a small opening in the strut tower. I already finished the CAD for the non-airbag type. I may just put that out first for a quicker time to market while I take my time on designing something clever for bag lovers.
Anyone want to chime in on spring rates for the Lexus ?
By the way they have the design for the 147 gs in japan already, because it's almost like the Soarer, anyone still hyped on fixing up the 147?

We fit the y33 Q45 suspension today, needed some changes. I guess thats why we test all the designs before bringing them to market.

there are companies that make them but shared experience hasn't been positive over the years.
stillen had, what looked to me, to be a pretty good design but it was prone to slipping. it is now discontinued.
nams has a sick design for g50 specific app but i don't know anyone who has coughed up the cash.
the "standard" design is usually too bulky and binds on the mounting bracket, although i believe there is a compny who has accounted for this.
so yeah, they make em but nothings really been proven as a good option.

how about a 3 rate option similar to your s chassis line up? 20/16/12kg would give a 16/12kg "hard" option and a 20/16kg "hardcore" option. assuming the f/r springs would be interchangable.

there's a member who did this on his ls already. personally, i wasn't on board because 1) it's cast and i was always tought not to weld cast (although i am awware of the "right" way to do it now) and 2) the dynamic changes to geometry.
of course i still consider myself novice when it comes to things like this, so if you feel you good do it without any (uncorrected) negative effects i'd take your word for it... after you explained it of course.

I could understand the shortcomings in the above FUCAs. But I'll have to see the car to understand the binding.
The 2kg difference in s chassis spring options is within range of the standard damper but the competition and streetable GS spring rates are so different that it would require a different damper.
There is no reason to be afraid of what steel the knuckle is made of because it's a high quality perfectly weldable density. Also we probably have more experience welding knuckles than anyone. I've seen multiple pro drift level front end collisions where the only suspension component that survives is our modded knuckle.
As for the geometry we would just be correcting what was lost from lowering the car. When the GS knuckle mod is used with roll center correction on the lower links it will restore proper handling by creating a drop spindle. If the roll center mod is only on the bottom, the original geometry is still f-ed up because the uncorrected position of the upper control arm is causing unusual camber gain upon compression.

so you would be adding a roll center adjuster of equal thickness to the portion sectioned out of the knuckle? the camber curve under compression was what bothered me but that sounds like a solution.
i already have a 20mm rca. hmmm...

Correct, the amount the GS knuckle gets shortened on top should match the RCA height on the bottom to prevent camber gain. You can also add static camber on the knuckle at the same time but it's better not to, the static camber for wheel fitment should be dialed in at the lower control arm eccentric bolt or with an aftermarket upper control arm for more aggressive camber for excessive wheel width or negative offsets.
That's the proper way to do it.
Also keep in mind the amount of fender roll may change depending on these things.

Will the coilovers come with the adjustable top hat? You should put them out first then work on the airbag type shock.
The 147 isn't as popular as the 16X but there are still guys out there who want more options. Rumor is that the Soarer suspension may bolt on to the 147 but the shock length is different or something.
Also, adjustable camber and toe arms will be very popular for the Lexus crowd. If you can make a good product that is affordable, you will open up a lot more options for the GS/LS owners because there is only Ikeya Formula and Nagisa Auto and you know their prices are way up there.

i'm curious how effective you think a camber plate will be on the toyota suspension design. since the strut bolts to the lca, rather then the spindle, will chaniging the position at the top mount cause any noticable change in camber?
i feel like the offset rca would be a better option.

It doesn't. If you were familiar with the 2nd gen GS suspension design you would know that when the car is extremely low the knuckle can rub the springs. This is why 2GS owners with UAS bags have rubbing problems. By making the top hat adjustable, it will move the shock away from the knuckle and make it clear. Check out these pictures from 326 Power.

After
For negative camber adjustment in the front, an adjustable UCA is the best option on the 2GS. Haven't seen an offset RCA before.

ok, i see what you're saying. you're looking for a solution for the bag rubbing. good idea.
offset rca, offially called a camber adapter. this could theoretically help the bag rub issue also since it spaces the knuckle outwards, but you have to take the ~3* of negative camber also (and the price tag).

according to the diagram from the japan shop you are correct about the soarer bolting up and having different shocks.

For camber alone, that is a much cheaper part to make them the upper control arm, and its more negative camber less the eccentric bolt's range. But spacing out the bottom end wont really help the top end where the bag rubs the gooseneck.

you mean y33, maybe 2-2011 considering the changes we just made to the production prototype.
The front camber is able to go -4 with the coilover camber plate at lowest ride height and the rear camber is able to go -7 with our RUCA / Toe / Coilovers dumped down.

Y33 install pix!

this application demands a weld on type front lower mount

camber was set in the front with the adjustable top plate

camber and toe in the rear are related on this car so those aftermarket parts must be installed together

The fender and quarter panel lip was flattened using the Parts Shop MAX roller, proper prep. for great fitment

our adjustable wheel spacers helped extract some decent fitment from conservative wheels

we set the height to get over speed bumps with minimal exhaust scraping and to be no problem in driveways and around town

to go lower I would recommend redoing the exhaust system for clearance after installing our sub frame risers

pretty conservative here but you can make it drag on the ground if you want.

the car rides stiff which is needed while maintaining a low ride height which may be a bit jarring for luxury tastes at speeds below 30MPH but the significant increase in suspension performance is welcomed when cruising smoothly and confidently on MAX coilovers at higher speeds.

Josh is super down to run the prototypes and help out this community to get more products made but narrowly missed my install time goal.
The car in the install pix belongs to a forum menber from San Diego, RajahCasti.
We changed the front damper length, and front lower mount length and position of the sway bar mount.

cool, i know josh was trying to get his s**t together to do the testing. guess it didn't come together. i was particularly interested to see what, if any, changes occured by switching over from the s chassis suspension. glad someoen stepped up though.
thanks for what you're doing. i hope you stick around and help further the understanding of suspension; at least mine if no one else. i guess i'm a nerd but i see y'all as a huge asset to vsc and the vip community. i wouldn't hate to see some higher level discussion around here (and not just in product threads).

I really agree. It's nice to see a company dedicated towards suspension to help the community. I've always been into suspension setups.
I'm interested in the upper pillowball mounts if you decide to sell those seperately. I'm planning on running hydraulics, so the whole coilover system isn't needed for me.

yeah, my insurances can get -4* using only adjustable upper mounts. i wish there were a way to get more without resorting to crazy things like FLCA or s-chassis front suspension, but that's a moot point for me already -- i've already taken the plunge.
for reference, my rear peak performance RUCAs only got me to -6.75* before i had to get them modded. so if you need -7*, don't get peaks! :P

Ive been riding on these for a couple of days since Dan's shop got them installed for me, going down bumpy roads is not very harsh, these coilovers are legit, handling is on point, when turning corners i dont have that boat like feeling anymore, i have way more control and dodging potholes is nothing even if you see them at the last moment. I Highly recommend these coils when released especially if your local in San Diego so you can meet the legendary Dan

later if you want to go lower we can redo the exhaust to tucy it above the frame rails and we should install subframe risers to correct geometry and prevent it from scraping so bad.
You can also make more improvements to your steering feel with some tension rods and tie rods and traction rods. The traction rods will center the rear wheel in the wheel well. The rear wheel keeps getting sucked farther forward as you go lower on the stock traction rod.

we have to wait for about 2 months on the JZS coilover prototypes before we can test and finalize the designs. in the mean time i'm trying to get ahold of some GS knuckles and arms from the local salvage yards

Correct me if I'm wrong but the LS is the same as the GS in the front and the same as SC in the rear. So we should have the LS covered without too much trouble.

Y33 front fits Y34.
Y33 rears can fit Y34 if top plate is modified. Y33 top plates are too large
You will also need to use a different lower shaft on the coilovers
With Y33 Setup on the Y34, you can remove the rear spring w.o any major repercussions.
How do I know? Ehm, I have done it

Just saw on Facebook that Haraguchi from 326 Power installed S14 suspension on a Y34 in Japan. Anyone ever try that?
The LS rear suspension doesn't share with any other chassis. UCF10 and UCF20 suspension are somewhat interchangeable. I think you can use UCF10 suspension on a 20 but not the other way around. Is that correct?

similarities between the y34 and y33 sus is quite uncanny which means you can indeed use s14 sus on a y34 if you have to.

20 rear suspension is longer, but withfull tap coilovers most companies cross app. different on 30 is only the width of the rear lower mount iirc.

Here is the info from our site:
Aggressive width wheel spacers are a must for those who desire the clean “Tsuda-Ichi” (Japanese for “paper thin” gap) flush wheel to fender look without buying an expensive set of custom width wheels. Parts Shop MAX precision CNC machined aluminum wheel spacers are lug and hub centric. They are available for a wide variety of cars, so make sure you get the correct size. We now offer 66.2 center bore with 4 or 5 1.25 thread studs for Nissan S13, S14 etc. 66.2 center bore with 5x1.50 thread studs for Toyota Supra/SC, FC RX7 and similar makes and also 67.1 center bore with 5x1.50 thread studs for Hyundai Genesis and similar cars. Features hardened steel studs and lug nuts all with a PCD of 114.3mm.
The next generation of wheel spacers are adjustable width! Now you can have great fitment with several sets of wheels despite differences in offset without buying more than one set of spacers. Drifters are always coming across new tires they want to try, but each brand has a different side wall profile, or some tires on sale where we cant be too picky about the exact size when it comes to price, however if you have super flush fender flairs or body work, they may rub too much so its really nice to be able to pull out a slip on from the stack and prevent rubbing. Also if you wanted to try stretching you tires a little more you can go down one size and add a slip on spacer maintaining your hella flush look without redoing bodywork & paint. If you are like us you cant resist switching up your style by buying and selling used wheels, and these adjustable spacers will make sure that whatever wheels you come across, you dont have to make any compromise in fitment. There are so many factors in wheel fitment including what chassis parts you have, ride height, alignment, offset, wheel diameter, tire size, brand etc. that is really nice to have the new found flexability and fitment control that the Parts Shop MAX adjustable spacers gives you.
We used to sell 15, 20, 25 and 30mm bolt on spacers which people loved because of the quality and slightly lower price, but this single set is capable of 14 different widths by combining one 15mm bolt on with long studs and a 3,5, & 7mm slip on. We dont like to rest on our achievements, instead we want to bring you the best most innovative parts while still maintaining a great value. Some other companies make this in Japan, but they are expensive and not as pretty. They have casted slip on spacers instead of CNC machined & anodized aluminum for the complete set. We felt its necessary to maintain a perfectly flat surface between all the spacers so we offer more precision than the other JDM manufacturers.
Possible sizes when combining these four sizes are:
3,5,7,8,10,12,15,18,20,22,23,25,27,30mm
We also sell components of the adjustable set individually

Sounds like the development for LS and Y34 will be fast. Anyone up for a measuring session and a free prototype set of coilovers?
On a side note the GS OEM knuckles and ball joints I ordered have arrived so we will mod the knuckle and make a jig to offer the service for anyone in the future. This way you guys wont need to cut a hole in the strut tower to run bags and you wont throw off the suspension geometry from lowering and adding RC adjustment to the lower arm only. You will have an effective drop spindle after our knuckle mod and bolt on roll center parts combination.
I have OEM arms here too for mocking up alignment parts.

I like to keep you guys posted on our developments but lately I dont have much to show the VIP segment since we have been seriously busy prepping cars for the 2011 formula D season opener.
I am not active on selling parts here because I am not a paid advertiser.
As we get parts in stock this status will change.
I have a few Y33 coilovers shipping in by air around the end of the month. I have more stock coming by ocean mid April.
If there is a pressing question you can feel free to contact me directly dan@poweredbymax.net

Ive driven an sc300 with pbm coilovers. Its not as bad as you think. Nothing compared to an s chassis with the same coilovers.

Correct the SC coilovers are way more comfortable than the spec makes them look, totally DD able.
Y33 is in stock now and we have completed the measuring session for Y34.
These are the production prototypes for GS / ARISTO JZS147 (1991–1997) and JZS160 JZS161 (1997–2005) VIP Coilovers.

yes sir, you cut off the strut tube leaving the last 2 inches of it sticking up out of the top of the spindle. Our lower mount slips over the old strut tube and is welded to the tube through the holes. Its welded to the spindle itself around the base of the lower mount.

I think every car may be different.
One guy may have me just install the coilovers, set height and pay $200
Another may need all the alignment parts installed and align with wheel spacers install and fender rolling on all four corners. and that takes more time but its all related to fitment, stance.

Similar to our Competition Coilovers in Features and our Pro Coilovers in Appearance, the VIP coilover provides lots of performance and style at a reasonable price.
key features:
Full tap independent adjustments
Aggressive damping range with fast adjust:
Allows you to do 32 clicks of damping change in just 10 clicks!
Pillow ball upper mount on front AND REAR!
Replaceable shock & customizable spring available to special order in custom Kg (even numbers only) .
Billet T6061 lightweight aluminum Lower mount with urethane bushing.
All aluminum components are hard anodized
High rigidity/High precision piston rod design exceeds racing standards
Adjustable to super low ride height
Full thread tap piston and locking collar allows vehicle height to be adjusted independent of the spring preload.
2 collar wrenches are included.
Light weight T6061 aluminum spring perch and locking collar designed to bear the weight of vehicle
Spring upper perch provides independance between the spring and the pillowball.
The GS spring rates are 12KG F 8KG R
If you want, you can go +/- 2 KG on the out of the box damper.
Additional springs can be purchased for $60/pair ( black )
Additional dampers are $100, you can special order a damper to match a spring that is out of the original dampers range.
But spec on paper is not the whole story, before you go special ordering stuff you should probably try it as-is, see how it feels to you, and your individual situation and go from there.

I can go WAY more than -4 with my camber plates. I'm at -4 right now and they're in the middle. Dan said their camber plates will offer a lot of adjustment, so I'd wait and see (or hit up RajhiCash since he's the car they used for the Y33 build).

cool, the strut mounting nut is right up against the shock tower opening on my y33, so if i wanted more camber without fucking with the track i'd need an s-chassis conversion. i still think that's the best way to go -- you have more options when it comes to aligning your car :P

Sorry I dont have a date yet. I'd guess we need to give it another month. This Y34 situation is a little different because I am skipping prototype and going straight to production on these. Reason being after I looked at the measurements of the Y34 and my exsisting products, I already make everything needed to produce these. Of course we will still verify this prodution run on your car.
cheez80;388954 wrote:well, if you want to get more than -4* or so of front camber, keep the s-chassis stuff
A quote from me earlier in this thread regarding Y33:
"The front camber is able to go -4 with the coilover camber plate at lowest ride height and the rear camber is able to go -7 with our RUCA / Toe / Coilovers dumped down."
However if you needed X amount of negitive camber you can get whatever you want by altering the angle the lower mount is welded to the spindle but you are limited by the wheel offset/width.

Ok, no problem, I'll hit you up mid-June!
You would think the middle would be stock, but at least on the ones in my car (custom) the middle has me at -4, I guess you'd have to go all the way to the "positive" side to get it to be at 0.

Confusing, I mean the stock one is in the middle and no car has -4 as the stock setting so did you adjust that on your FLCA?

This is the only pic I have. You can see it's pretty much in the middle of the slot, it could be that there are multiple different mounting holes for the hex bolts, but if you look at the top bolt of the strut, it's pretty much in the center of the slot - which may not be the center of the original opening.

I'm not sure, but Y34 might be slightly narrower chassis than Y33. I know Y34 vs. F50 is the same length and pretty much everything underneath is identical, but the Q is wider than the M. For tax purposes in Japan it's based on cars width.. Father in law has Nissan Bluebird Sylphy and said he liked the Skyline (G35) but because the Bluebird is narrower, it's cheaper to own, but that sucker has mad rear leg room and I'm 6'2...

I would agree but the numbers are there. I used a pivoting angle rule to measure it on the warehouse floor, so it may not be as precise as on an alignment machine, but it's definitely close. Before they installed everything, my front wheels were flush, tires right at the edge, camber was mild just from the drop, barely noticeable. After they were done, I probably need to get 10mm spacers for the front wheels to be flush again. I've been waiting till it's all said and done though to decide exactly what size spacers to run. Planning on that when we do the install at MAX.

sorry for some reason I didnt think about what you were asking,
you were obviously looking for the threaded tube diameter of the dampers which is 2" and the universal air site quotes the bag ID of 2.14" so its just perfect.

Lifetime manufacturers defect warranty
100% new dampers are $100 ea. Which is cheaper than a rebuild where you get back some used parts and new seals. This system is designed to reduce your downtime if you should ever have a problem and it saves labor time and shipping costs.
No one ever buys replacement dampers from us unless they crash. They are really reliable. However if you choose to under/over spring the damper too much with say air bags, you can expect to limit the life of the damper.

Well lets be real here, I dont think that anyone lowers a luxury sedan to increase its reliability. So if bags are what makes you excited about customizing your car, go for it! Just be aware that you are shortening the damper life because you are constantly varying the spring (air pressure) beyond what the damper is designed for which makes it work harder than it has to with coil springs. You know how much it will cost you to replace them, so now you are educated about the risk, and if your budget finds this compromise acceptable then feel free to proceed.
My personal opinion is that I prefer to man up and ride low all day every day, you may sacrifice some comfort (springs being stiffer versus the bags) but what you are gaining is handling performance & always looking great everywhere you go, not just during hard parking.
Coilovers are Cheaper, less complex, and quick and easy to install too.

Why not have the luxuary of always looking great everywhere you go and be able to have the luxury of gaining access to areas where others can't or get stuck or being able to park even lower and still be able to ride somewhat comfortable?
I think your opinions are towards thoughs who have bags and ride high and park low.
Not trying to spark another debate jus wanted to throw that in here =)

Ya you know who I am talking about, I see them on the freeway and it looks ridiculous. I hate that.
There are others who have it dialed which is cool, my coilovers wont stop people using bags, they are totally compatible so people can try both, upgrade later if they are into bags and we may offer a package in the future because I realize people like to be able to traverse difficult things without scraping and they also like to lay frame.

I saw 7 and 5 KG on someone elses setup. I'm guessing its too soft for your ride height?

^Why?
I have been running them for the last 2.5 years and I like them but the rears are blown and I don't feel like rebuilding them so I was going to do the S chassis swap and air over but now I think I am going to sell that stuff and do this.....unless you talk me out of it...

If the old ones you have are matching the spring numbers I suspect they have that's too soft IMO
You need to have stiff suspension when you ride low to keep from scraping.
You can try the new coilovers as-is if you would like to try a stiffer setup or go air over damper whenever you want.
As for the s chassis swap it just requires more parts than this set made for the car, right?

First JZS147 GS with MAX VIP coilovers:

Rear

Rear

Front

Front

At first we slammed it down to see how low it could go, but it sat on the wheels before it rested on the coilover
So basically it can touch the ground if you want to run bags, and you have the wheel cleared for tucking into the car

Later we settled on a more useable ride height where the exhaust is not dragging on the ground.

If the OEM pipe was not dangling so far down and the car had adjustable links this could be DD lower for sure.

Even with the compromises made for the things I mentioned above, its a really good look, and the ride quality is fantastic!

It was a pleasure working with CubanGS on this car, What a beautiful ride!

He was really happy to be riding with this much static camber and ride height all day long without suffering from the crappy ride of low PSI in his bags, and the rear tires no longer rub on the smallest bumps. Excessive body roll is a thing of the past as well.

what specs did y'all go with on the 1gs? i recently did a custom 14/12 setup and with the damping dialed down it was very comfortable. i wanna see you guys offer these in some hardcore specs.
and stop bein greedy, let some of us dealers get in on this golden awesomeness. =p

This 147 suspension we installed today is equipped with 12 and 8 KG
I have to say the ride was really...really nice.
Way more comfortable cruising than the Y33 on 10/8 KG
Which is a little mind boggling since the curb weight seems to be 1870KG on Y33 and 1680 on the JZS147
Maybe the double A arm design of the toyota being superior to the McPherson strut.
For a stiffer feeling the lexus sedans could easily use 16/12 KG as seen in our SC300 / Soarer Drift suspension.
Hey we're not greedy - whatever money we make goes right back into development.

all i have to say is thank you!!!! the ride back up to LA was soo fucken legit!! it was super smooth and firm! it almost felt like the airrunner with the bags fully inflated! it feels great rolling lower than i ever could with the airrunner and not only still having dependable suspension but having a great feeling ride! although i am used to the stiff and bouncy feeling of smaller compact cars on coils i must admit the ride provided by this coilover at the lowest possible ride height my wheel and body allow is AMAZING!! im not sure what to say.. these things are perfect. thanks to the coils my car is one step closer to my goal!
have any links to the production line? i would like to share these with friends!

It's about $1340 shipped to the east coast. The GS coilovers are not posted for sale on our site yet. It will take a couple of months to stock up. I'll add it to the site then.
Chris, thanks for the review, and thanks for your business. It's a pleasure to work on such a nice GS.
You GS guys may need some multilink parts because I noticed that other than the obvious need to get camber for big wheels, when you lower the car a lot the wheel becomes off center from the wheel arch.

Stop by AF today and Chris gave me a test ride in the GS. We dipped a few blocks and the ride was pretty smooth/legit! Stiff but very comfortable, wasn't bouncy at all!
So far seems pretty good for the price

You can cut the strut tower hole for more travel if you want to keep your camber gain or you could correct the geometry in the front more by cutting and splicing the spindle neck. Im sure RCA in the rear will assist since the bad characteristics are caused by lowering the car and that helps to undo it a little. but ultimately adjustable multilink arms will give the most control over your wheel position.

Ok, I'm getting jealous here! Any chance of you adding the Odyssey RA1 to this list? I have been wanting to do a cup setup, and am advised that they will work on my Teins, but that it is not suggested... It's no secret that the Vanning culture is spreading through the US... I'd be willing to drop one of my two Odyssey's over there so that all the necessary work can be done... Here's a lil inspiration:

These are just a few that are stateside, two of the three are on used setups.. there are no options stateside...
Tried calling and ordering stuff for my customers, but paypal only? I know its like the thing of the future.. but, kinda weak in my opinion. Been frauded way to many times by it, and only use credit for ordering through my business now.
Need to fix that, gain more customers this way. Since more people like using credit cards now days to rack up debt. And our economy proves this lol

Sorry you don't like paypal. They are just a credit card processor bound by the rules of visa and MasterCard just like all the others, maybe the person on the other end of your past transactions has defrauded you but that has nothing to do with us. You can drop a check in the mail and avoid them all together.
I'm all about the vanning, I have the only ElGrand in the USA, made custom coilovers for it. I can do the same for you.

I'm sure if you make the 2008+ xB an affordable option, people will buy. But most Scion owners are very budget conscious.
I'm hoping to find different rear spring rates for the 'beehive' type springs my KSports have. I don't think Swift has anything for that.

lol maybe i will. It has been hacked before from someone in Indo, and another from Canada. But you cant build credit with paypal like a mastercard :P
Either way, i will be using my friends paypal to make the purchase here shortly. I hope fender rollers will roll in soon as we need a new one.

No one makes a good variety of spring rates for the "beehive" spring, plus the perches are never very adjustable. Therefore converting cars to true coil-over-damper in the rear is my preference if possible.

kouki, you can still pay through paypal using a credit card, rather than using your savings/checking account(s) -- it's one of the options you can select before actually paying.

I know! I watched your build with great anticipation, and was really waiting to see it at the AF VIP Festival last November... even asked if you were coming...
Custom sounds expensive.... shoot me some guesstimates and then we can go from there... more than likely, I'll want 2 pair... maybe the troops can be rallied so that more will be purchased.... Also, with them being custom, what will likely be the warranty offered, since again the work will be custom..

Bingo. I've been using PayPal over a decade now and never had a single problem, I even have a PayPal credit card lol. But yeah, if you pay with your credit card, you're protected by your credit card company just like you would be at any store.

Well it seems that Chris was tired of replacing bags and dampers for the time being. However he tells me his driveway is pretty crazy so we talked at length about bag upgrades in the future which is not straightforward at all on the 2GS...but I have all of the measurements to make it happen if he and others want an air system based on this coilover system. If we go there Im sure I can make the UA bag more reliable and the dampers life will be reduced but we will be there to support people with reasonably priced replacements.
I think it will be quite a while until anything pays off, we are just at the "tip of the ice burg" of VIP spec parts development so we still have a lot of investment in time and money ahead of us at the moment.

Sorry I missed you then. How many are we talking about? If there is enough then maybe I can pay for the development costs and make it a part of our regular offerings and sell at no added cost to the end users.

It's actually not low enough. I'm gonna lower it another inch in the front and half an inch in the rear next week after the springs settle. It rides very smooth, much less rebound than my air suspension. It's stiff but not bouncy. Very controlled. And the best part is nothing hits or rubs!

Ya, we should have took some video because when he was accelerating or hitting bumps or taking corners with 3 people in the car his rim lip was tucking in the fender. I was watching it the whole time we were cruising from the side view mirror.
We should stick a go pro camera on it lol. It's legit. And he totally has the exhaust ground clearance to go lower.

Anyone get good pix of you at the meet? I think its really hard to catch this car in the right light with a camera since the black lip does not make the good fitment as obvious as a car with polished lips.
There is only a precious few seconds in the vid where you can see the shine of the rim lip to see how on point the fitment is while rolling.
I guess thats the point of the videos though, your gangster fitment is not just for a still shot but thats how you roll all day long.

Hahah I love it. So fucking widee. Are yours 18s or 19s? Also how low do your coils go up front? I'm not getting as much low as I wanted out of these PBMs up front. The rears are money but the fronts I wanna get to brokey33 status. Lol
So right now I have my dampers spun as far as possible into the lower mounts, both bottom collars removed from both sides and the spring collar spun all the way to the bottom against the lower mount. Dan keeps telling me that if I can spin the dampers more into the lower mounts(by trimming some more of the oem sleeves or whatever) that will lower the car and I keep saying that will only change damper stroke if the spring collar is always up against the bottom mount(ride height stays the same). The collars can only go down as far as the lower mounts though so when I spin the dampers in more the collars have to come up the same amount(duh lol). So if I'm missing something as to how this would lower the car someone please explain or is this not the lowest the coils go? Feel free to chime in Dan but we've been talking in circles in emails and we both keep saying the same thing
Ps Dan I'm not raising the car;-] lol my other cars are significantly lower and Ive been dailying like that for years

Ps Dan I'm not raising the car;-] lol my other cars are significantly lower and Ive been dailying like that for years
Pic of the ground clearance after the collar came out please.

ollie, is that the lowest the front goes with all of the collars and an 18" wheel?

Another Y33 install. Totally stock except coilovers so we kept this one pretty conservative so he could maintain alignment on all the stock parts.

First Y34 install for testing, Stock will arrive soon.
The challanging part of the install is cutting the front strut tube. You want to cut it as low as possible (to maximize your lowest possible ride height adjustment) while still being able to connect a weld to the top hole on the bottom of the front lower mount.
The little tab on the outside of the strut tube base gets ground off too.

cover the welds with undercoat preferably, or black spray paint so it does not rust.

The gold rear lower mount bolt here is stock. Its too short for the aftermarket parts install.
The replacement black one is an M12x1.25t bolt thats about 1cm longer than OEM.
New washers and a nylon lock nut are also used because the OEM lower mount has threads on one side.

Rear installed.
This is a true rear coil-over-damper conversion that achieves much more adjustability and spring choices than stock.

Kevin was smart enough to have a muffler shop reroute his pipes higher than stock.
However at these settings there is still not too much ground clearance, and these coilovers can go way way lower.

In the front the car has the OEM cats in place and with plenty more room to lower the car, there is only 1 inch of clearance.
This was still high enough to clear most any common variations in the street but we avoided speed bumps on the test drive.

We ran just a little negative camber in the front to let the wheels turn while the tires tucked in the fender.
The gold part here is the garnish that stays on the coilover.
There is also a gold adjuster that slips in the center of the garnish but you dont leave it on while driving.

We left the wheel well liners in which gave a little rub on hard cornering.
They should come out of we go lower but its nice to retain them when ever possible.

We used some MAX slip on spacers to dial the fitment, which makes a nice subtle accent behind the wheel too.

I love the Y34, such a nice car. The rear suspension design is for superior to Y33, and the feel is more like the lexus GS than the Y33.
After the car was equipped with the MAX coilovers, the ride is confidently firm, yet comfortable at this amazing static ride height.

Thanks to all at psMAX!!!! The 100 or so mile ride home was so much fun, I caught myself cruising along and looked at the speedo and thought "oh shit, I can't be cruising along at 100!" LOL, it's so smooth and re-assuring, I feel I could take on anyone now. The ride is tight and firm, not harsh, jarring or anything. Can definitely go lower if I decide to, but I'm a fan of simple VIP and like the subtle, aggressive look. Today on the way to work at a light a guy in a G35 was creeping along next to me with his head out checking out the fittment.
Since leaving psMAX yesterday I've put a few more miles on the car, my ride to work and back plus the harrowing trip into my son's pre-school parking lot (looks like it's been bombed by a fleet of jets), and over the 2 train track sets I cross, which I STILL hit at 45-50 mph with nothing more than an inch or two clearance. I love my car more than I ever have, it's a pleasure to drive, and it looks exactly how I want it to. That my friends is "win win".
I did feel the rear was a little soft so I set the rear shocks to full firm today which helped the minor tire rub under full throttle and big bumps and I am going to add more front camber to get it back to the look I like w/ a little more camber in front than the rear, but that's it.
I can't say enough about the professionalism, the attention to detail and super high quality of these suspension parts.

I want to go with PBM coils, but I don't want to start off with off the shelf spring rates and then shell out extra $$$ to upgrade them (which I think is pointless for a person who knows what they need). Regardless I need it custom out the box.

I bet if you said you wanted specific rates, you can swap them out, but Dan would have to confirm that.

Already asked that back in page 8 and here was the reply...
Maybe I can do the spring swap and upgrade, but I wasn't so clear with the answer from there. If I can that would be great. I honestly do not want to try what comes out the box and continue from there, because then it'll be my lost.

Well, I guess if you want to go more than 14/10 which would be +2kg each, you'd have to pay extra $60 per set, so total $120 more, still, that's not bad at all!!

Yes you can get a custom setup but that can really delay the delivery time.
also its a bit hard to judge what you want to change about our suspension based on your knowledge of another brand because different brands use different valving strategy, and the spring materials and character can vary a lot even within the same KG rating. KG rates are really like an average and they dont really tell you how it will actually feel, or how linear or progressive the spring is. Spring testing can have dyno sheets just like dampers but no one ever publishes that info for some reason.
So in short its nice to have an accurate reference point by using the out of the box spec first. We actually think carefully about what we put in the box to begin with.
You can go +/- 2KG in either direction and stay in the dampers range. Springs are available in even numbered KG only.
or you can go more than a 2KG change and get custom dampers.
Its faster to get unfinished custom rate springs (in black) and slower to get the gold coated springs in some rate that we dont mass produce.

Yeah. Removing the collars still doesn't get it low enough and besides you lose the height adjustment fine tuning that I need. I am going to cut the springs=/ because I can't afford new springs ATM and want to get low with full adjustability

Yeah, this is why I didn't really want them either because I wanted something with much higher rates which they wouldn't do but at the end of the day I'm just a poor college kid so I can't be all that picky. lol I mean they do the job I guess. I was planning to eventually get stiffer springs but you'd definitely need new dampers especially at those rates as my car bounces around like crazy with the current rates and valving

Are your front springs even preloaded still? That could be why it's bouncy. Won't cutting your springs void whatever warranty you may have.

I think your problem, is that your mounts weren't mounted at the very bottom. I've seen other local Y33's with the MAX coils and they're lower than you. The front of my Y34 is the exact same setup and my car is lower than yours and could go lower still. I have about 2" clearance below the rear subframe, and I think the standard rates are pretty good. I'm low and I have a pretty good ride quality.

The installer/welder can effect the ride height ability of the coilovers on Y33 and Y34 installations. Its all about where you cut the OEM strut tube, the higher you cut the tube the higher the minimum ride height will be. the lower you cut the tube, the lower the car can go.
Ollie, lets see some pix of the coilover with the wheel turned so I can see your install on your front knuckle and the settings of the collars, and a measurement of the depth your lower mount has inside for the aftermarket damper before it hits the cut OEM strut tube, and a shot of the top plate camber setting and a pic of a lug nut against the cat under the car showing the ground clearance like I showed on Kevin's car.

Yeah I hear what you're saying but I assure you that my mounts are installed at the very bottom. There's really no other way of doing it, not sure why anyone would mount them higher up haha. I did just run out to the car to make 100% sure haha. You got any pics of the other 33s running these? If I were on 19s they'd probably do the trick but because I'm on 18s I need to go lower.
The amount of depth that the lower mount has for the damper to screw in would only effect damper stroke which would effect ride quality, yes. It would only limit how low I could go if I were to end up on the bump stops but I assure you I am not.

The front of my Y34 is the exact same setup and my car is lower than yours and could go lower still. I have about 2" clearance below the rear subframe, and I think the standard rates are pretty good. I'm low and I have a pretty good ride quality.
I think you're doing it wrong. Threading the coilover into the lower mount will not effect stroke but overall length of the coilover. If you're adjusting it right you should never lose shock travel hence never being on the bumpstops.

Nah picture this scenario:
I have the damper spun all the way but 1" to the bottom. I have my locking collars spun all the way down to the lower mount. I then spin the locking collars up 1" and then spin the damper down 1" into the mount which would make it spun all the way in(and would result in the locking collars still being down at the bottom against the lower mount). This would keep ride height the same(lowest point with the collars in), and create more stroke. Right?

That should lower your car 1in and keep the stroke the same. You would effectively be decreasing the distance between the lca and shock tower thus lowering the car. Unless I read it wrong but I read it like 5 times.
There should be only one locking collar for the lower mount.

No one has used these dampers with air. Our dampers are very robust, they last many years without failure but like any damper if you under or over spring it, the damper must work harder so it's life will be shorter. Air bags are like infinitely variable springs.
However I bet there is only a certain useful range of PSI that baggers use, so the intelligent question is what is the KG equivalent of the useful pressure range in your bags? Maybe Universal Air knows the answer.

i've tried to figure out that equation berfore but there is no way to convert psi to kg/mm since they are different types of measurement. it has to be measured.

I could take a bag and put it on the spring dyno next time I go to Japan, but I think someone in the industry has to (well should have) done this already. I'm just the new guy here.

Lol!! Yeah I can't wait. Talked to Dan today to get a set for a customer. I will post pics here with a product review. From what Dan said on the overal compressed height if you were to lower it all the way it's 13.5 inches. I don't think my sexystyle coils for the 14 are that short. Either way love their products the overal concept is genious. Buyer and supporter til the death of me haha.

No, today we did a steering knuckle modification where we shortened the gooseneck connection to the (existing) UCA so it does not hit the car, and so it does not max out the ball joint. We also put 18 and 14 KG springs and matching dampers in the coil overs.

UCF30 - I dont need to do a measuring session because the parts are finished already. What I do need is a fantastic looking car to install the first set on & take pix. So if yours fits that description, and you want to drive over here and buy some coilovers, I'll install them for free.

How much for a fully custom "short" setup for a Gs 400 like chris' car
Like 22/19K springs
My car will never be on anything less than a 5 inch drop and will never be more than three fingers off the ground and I drive fast so I need something crazy

it does not cost anything extra to order custom springs and dampers it just takes time, like 2 months
springs are in even KG only so maybe 22/20
if you want it faster it will cost a lot more.

I think that's the usual order of things for most cars. Suspension then wheels.
But it seems the VIP car thing to do may be to search the web for other cars that have the look you want and then using known sizes and offsets for your application, order the wheels and suspension together so that the fenders can be modded appropriately and painted if there is major work needed. You need the wheels and suspension before the body work starts, and it seems the VIP crowd may be less likely to drive around in an under construction state versus a honda or nissan driver.
Maybe 3 months till we are stocked up with your application.

You can choose from the competition or pro models. It depends on your power level and budget and the desired level in drifting you wish to reach. Maybe the comp is slightly lower but with both types you will remove collars in the front to be all the way on the ground.

should test fit ucf20 on a 10... if you design them for a 20 they may not go low enough on a 10.

Its just an s13.. hahaha A special one at that. One owner s13 off the show room floor. KA-T turbo since mid 90s!
Here is some pics of it, sorry video not up yet.. :( working on getting some rolling footage as well:
before
Rolled the fenders with the PBM roller  Though, since he is using a q45 diff, and axles the cv end sheared the screw drive bolt. Didnt have spacers to put on so I had to get creative. As I was rolling outwards the inner nut got closer to the CV. (may want to look into anyone else having this problem.
Little bit lower in the front
We didnt go to low cause the down pipe scrapes on his drive way and crowns of roads at the moment. We will fab this so we can drop it down a bit more.
But I say, perfect coilovers for a man who is 44 years old and still in the game hella strong. and! his first set of coilovers too!! He is more of a drag racer than a drifter, but these were very comfortable for him.
Thanks DAN!
Also, i forgot to mention that the rear rotating collar hits his upper control arm. He does have after market ones.. the only way to get around this was to not use the bottom collar as it prevented getting the coilover on the spindle

We have a successful test fit on the pre-production coilovers for: Lexus IS 300 First generation (XE10) 1998-2005 Altezza
MAX Competition Coilovers 12kg F, 8kg R
This is good enough for our initial fit, but there is loads of room to go lower = )
Car is wearing TE37 18x10.5+15 225-40-18 and 17x10+18 215-40-17 in the front for now, but we'll switch it up and get it more dialed soon probably with 18" in front.

You determine how low the y33 goes in the front by how low you cut the oem strut tube because when the coilovers damper touches that it cant be threaded in any more. If you cut it one inch up from it's base you can super slam the car, if you cut it 2 inches from the base it will have more area to weld through the holes but it can't be set to an ultra low ride height.

I'm at -5 right now and could slide them in to the max setting about 1/2" more, which should easily equal another couple degrees I'm guessing.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Like I told Dan, I am shortening up the front track to run wider deeper wheels to match rear. and If i shorten the control arm i have to camber it more than most to make it equal. The other option was to chop the strut tube at -5 degrees and use the top hat to dial in the camber after it has been shortened. other wise you get a whole lot of positive camber

Hi Dan,
I have been somewhat following this thread, it seems like its something I am considering because my stock coils are dead and I am in need of a new set of coils.
But i have a UCF10 (1994 ls400), and I have heard from members here that the UCF20 suspension fits a 10, but with the possibility of not being able to go low enough (according to OG's quote).
I am assuming that the overall length of the 10 is shorter than a 20?
I guess my question is Dan, is if MAX is considering producing a set for the UCF10?? I would be interested in trying a set if they manufacture one.
Thank you.
Regards.
PS: what are the spring rates for the UCF20 and cost plus shipping to Canada?

So when will the LS400 coilovers be available for purchasing? Also what will the max height be? Say for winter/snow conditions?

sounds like a reasonable way of producing the results you want but the offset needs to be low enough to keep the wheel off of the spring.

I dont really know how much difference the UCF 10 is compaired to the 20, i guess if someone wants to come here for an installation of the UCF 20 coilovers on a UCF 10 here we will find out really fast.
The UCF20 goes really low, so a reasonable solution is to try it and if it does not go low enough, switch to smaller dampers.
ill consider making a set dedicated to the UCF 10 if its necessary, or if our spec for the similar model works, then we dont need to make anything
the out of the box rate is 12 and 8 KG $1400usd shipped to canada
SuicidnS13;419847 wrote:So when will the LS400 coilovers be available for purchasing? Also what will the max height be? Say for winter/snow conditions?
they should have plenty of room to adjust to a safe height because the bottom mount cups are about 5 inches deep, and thats a lot of adjustability.

lol, i didnt see the above posts. but was wondering more about time of availability? i like how PBMs are purtier and cheaper than eastwood's design. and these are supposed to be better and easier to use for slammed cars im guessing?

My best estimate for Fender roller stock is 12-9.
The new shipment will be black with gold logo.
The design of this roller is to be able to roll cars without having to detach the coilover like you have to do with the other brand.
We prefer shipping only through USPS to canada because of the advantageous tax situation. More expensive shipping but way less tax.

Stock arrives in late march or early april for that application. Afterwards im sure we will have some opportunity to test some UCF10 fitment in the USA, we hear the dampers need to be shorter then the UCF20 Celsior/LS400 but in my opinion we have some pretty short dampers already for the UCF20 so Im sure it will work out fine and if not we can simply order custom dampers for UCF10

Is there a charge for stiffer spring rates on the LS400 coilovers?

There is no charge for custom springs and dampers. However you must wait 3-4 months for the factory to fill the special order and for the coilovers to be consolidated with one of our ocean freight shipments.
Alternatively you can pay an additional $200 for air freight to cut 3 weeks off the time.
You can also try the in stock in the USA spec first and order additional springs and or dampers at a later date.
