Tech: 2003-2004 M45 (Y34) Fuel Sending Unit

Disclaimer: This is only a partial fix to a fuel gauge that is incorrectly reading actual fuel level. This will NOT fix any gauge cluster issue you may have.

I initially had a perfectly working fuel level gauge, until one day I drove the car rather hard. The fuel gauge then started to read full ALL THE TIME. thinking that the fuel may have sloshed around and got the sender stuck, I decided to take it apart and figure it out. Here's what I found:

Tools:
- common screwdriver
- 8mm socket wrench or normal wrench OR a stubby phillips screwdriver
- two small bags with twist ties
- O-ring for fuel sender unit (~$7)

BEFORE BEGINNING: Work in a well vented area, and make sure you haven't started the engine or turned the key to the On position for at least an hour. this will relieve the fuel pressure.

1. Open trunk
2. Remove carpet, spare wheel cover, and the foam bits surrounding the wheel
3. Remove the push clips that hold the rear trim. There's about 6-8 clips. just pop the centre out towards you, then remove.
4. The top part of the trim is clipped to the trunk. Pull it towards the rear of the car, and the rest of the trim will come out
5. You'll see this:
Forum image
- Remove the electrical connection
- Grabbing both sides of the fuel line, as indicated by the arrows, pull the fuel line away. WARNING: FUEL MAY SQUIRT OUT... ESPECIALLY if you didn't listen to the "before beginning" bit.

6. Wrap both the fuel line to the engine, and the fuel pump line, in bags using the twist ties to tie them off. This will collect any fuel that leaks out.
7. Remove the six 8mm bolts (8mm socket or phillips screwdriver)
8. Slowly remove the fuel pump/sender assembly. I had to turn it 180 degrees counter-clockwise in order to full remove it. BE VERY GENTLE pulling it out.
9. Here's the fuel pump / sender assembly:

In the first picture, the arrow points to a plastic clip that holds the sender unit's arm to the rest of the assembly. This arm is spring-loaded, which is soldered to the lower section in the photo. The picture shows what it would be if the gas tank was empty. Notice the lines behind the arm... the higher the arm goes, the more fuel is in the tank, the higher your gauge should read.

In the second picture, the arrow points to the metal tab that slides on the lines that completes the circuit and ultimately determines where your fuel gauge should read. This metal tab is what is soldered to the spring, and ultimately to the lower section of the first photo. This metal tab is made of some very very thin metal, and is highly prone to being twisted, bent, or otherwise altered from it's normal shape. More on this later...

The third picture shows the arm actually off the unit, only being held on by the wire that makes up the spring and metal tab.

From here, you'll need to do some problem-solving on your own... But, for mine there were two problems:
First, the arm of the sender had popped off, which caused no reading whatsoever.
Second, the metal tab that slides up and down was bent, so when it was reading, it was reading HIGHER than normal... because the metal tab was bent slightly up.

What I did was fixed the metal tab so it was much straighter, without any kinks/bends in it. This allowed for it to read properly.

To test to see if your fuel sender is toast, or to see if what you're doing is making any difference, disconnect the fuel pump from the assembly, by disconnected the electrical connection. This is the black plug near the rubber hose. This will prevent the fuel pump from running without any fuel in it (BAD, as fuel pumps use fuel as a lubricant).
Then, plug the whole assembly back into the chassis harness, turn the ignition to the on position, and adjust the fuel sender unit to go through it's range.
If it still doesn't work, check the wiring on the assembly to make sure there are no broken wires or bad soldering connections. You can also check resistance with a multimeter across the entire range of the sender, but I don't have any details regarding those tests.

So, if you got everything fixed... or unable to fix it, reassembly time!

10. Looking at the gaping hole for the tank, you'll notice a groove around the edge. You should have a gasket there that looks like this:

This will sit perfectly in the groove...

No o-ring

O-ring!

If your old o-ring doesn't fit perfectly, replace it with a new one (About $7). Otherwise, you'll pop a SES (Service Engine Soon) light, explaining there's a small emissions leak :)

11. Replace o-ring!
12. Reinstall fuel sender unit, being very gentle when putting back into tank. You do not want to knock the sender arm off the post...
13. Bolt back down, connect the electrical connection and the fuel line.
14. Start the car to make sure everything is working as it should (hopefully better if you fixed it to start reading fuel levels!).
15. Shut car off and replace the trunk trim.

Viola. Should take 15-30mins from start to finish.

This is a common issue on Y34's (as in most of them) and it's common to Nissan in general. It's not the fuel sending unit, it's the gauge cluster. If you google it, you'll find all kinds of info. I wasted the money on a new fuel sending unit when I first got mine because that's what the engine code said to replace, worked for less than 1 week before it was magically full all the time again. Did a little google research to discover it's not the fuel sending unit (apparently they almost never fail) but it's the fuel gauge itself (would be nice if it was just the fuel sending unit!!!).

BBA Remanufacturing in Mass will repair your gauge cluster with a lifetime warranty for 250 and even include overnight air on the return. It's easy to R&R the whole cluster. I have a spare brand new gauge cluster which I will rent out to anyone who wants to fix theirs the right way so while your cluster is being fixed, you can pretend your car has only 2k miles on it LOL. There are 2 different gauge clusters for these cars depending on if it's Nav or not, the one I got is not for cars with Nav and Laser Cruise Control like mine, the gauges all work properly, but cruise control doesn't work right.

yeah, most cases it'll be the gauge cluster, but... considering how cheap it is to pull the sender out, check it... possibly fix it, and pop it back in.... it's worth trying before you drop a ton of money on a cluster.

and cheap, being... $7 for the o-ring.

Driven appreciate it... This should apply to F50 and even maybe Y33 since the tanks are similar.

Never seen it happen in the F50, or at least not in mine. The 03+ F50 switched to a returnless fuel system like the Y34.

Not the sending unit from my understanding. But the gauge cluster.

in the G coupes, the sending units are a huge issue and they look similar to the above ones, I took mine apart and used a Q-tip to clean where the arm's sensor contacts the electrical board (where the sensor moves up and down on the metal plate) and solved my problem.

I'm an infiniti tech and I hardly see any G coupes with sending unit issues, but you are correct on the 03-04 M's the gauge cluster is the most common problem with the fuel gauge. The easiest way to check is to pull the pump assembly out and do a resistance sweep with the sending unit and if it passes then you need a cluster

no real update right yet, but my parts are gonna be investigated when i get the new cluster and sending unit in and send out my old/defective parts. im guessing im the guinea pig lol.

bring your car in to the dealer for the fuel gauge being inaccurate/erratic...dont mention what i just posted, and just say you know the nhsta is investigating this issue.....and they will tell you what the next step will be. you might be a guinea pig too ;) but atleast you'll get new parts.

THIS IS NOT A RECALL/CAMPAIGN........not yet atleast

Alright I went to Crest Infiniti the other day and just like I expected, they didnt recall anything about the issue or as of yet heard any news on the situation. All they told me about was the passenger airbag issue which i didnt care about. They pretty much told me that they would replace the cluster for their price and put me in any of their loaner cars for a couple days. I guess we'll just find out when we find out huh

like i said. its not a recall. ONLY the dealer will have the quality alert notice. if they do what they're supposed to, they should have called the field quality advisor about it. id ask the service manager about it cuz the techs or service writers might not know about it.

Yeah, cool. Just got an online notice from NHTSA that the recall is official for the faulty fuel gauge. Recall ID #12V088000. Infiniti is to start scheduling repairs in mid April 2012. Wording seems to imply only repair of the existing cluster not replacement. Now I only wish my camshaft position sensor was also a recall. Anyways, that's good news for us Y34 owners. Later.

I wonder if since I had mine rebuilt by BBA Reman and they give a lifetime warranty on it, I'm just assed out the $300 I spent? Meh, it's only 3 bills ......

When I filled the complaint a few weeks ago, I signed up with the Recall Notification System to be notified. So unless you signed up, you probably will not get any response from NHTSA. Later.

doesnt matter whether you bought the car new or used. esp if your car is in the system at your local dealer, you will get something in the mail. if not, i will keep you all posted for when the recall is in the system effectively...then you can just call in and set an appointment. =)

My wife 96 Exploder got a recall notification for a speed sensor unit and she is definitely not the original owner nor signed up for the recall systems for ford but it is ford and not nissan.

if the cluster was replaced before at the dealer, you should be entitled to a reimbursement....like i previously stated. now getting it repaired elsewhere....i'm not so sure, but it's worth a shot if you have records/receipts for proof.

NHTSA Recall 12V-088

I got my official recall letter todayForum image NHTSA Recall 12V-008. I do not have the issue, but I'll hold on to the letter. How long is this letter good for? Can I use it 18 months if I discover an issue?

Went to the dealer today in San Diego and while the system had the recall in it, there wasnt any description or parts listed. They said it would take some time for the system to update since the recall was so recent. They are going to call once the system updates and they can get the parts.

I've had this car since 2005 and I've yet to have an issue with the gauges or sending unit, so until I start having issues I will just sit on the letter. The recall letter is good for a looooong time. Ten years I believe.

Thats bs. The campaign is posted and i can print out all the pages including part numbers for the kit.

And stockstar...this isnt a reprogram or anything. Its an updated rear cover with a sub-amp to help keep things running cooler in the circuit board. I dont understand why people disregard safety campaigns. :pat:

Got my letter yesterday but I long since had mine repaired with lifetime warranty at BBA Remanufacturing. So I gotta hope I can find the receipt and get reimbursed the $300 or so I spent.

Fyi guys....the recall doesnt replace the gauge cluster. So if u did...u still need to go in and get the campaign done. I had my cluster and sending unit replaced since i was a guinea pig for this quality alert, but i still did the campaign cuz its a completely diff part added to the back of the cluster and includes a jumper harness too.

Well I finally took my '03 in yesterday for the fuel gauge repair. Haven't driven it for a couple months cause of cracked windshield and some occasional stalling, so got a new windshield put in earlier in the week.

Next day figured to get a diagnostic done to see if anything comes up for the stalling issue but of course nothing showed and was out $100., so then rolled by the infiniti dealer to set up an appt. for the recalls. Apparently there's also one for airbag. Dropped it off in morning and they took just about 3 hrs for repairs.

What was cool is I got a blue slate G37 sedan loaner for the day, it seemed a little more refined and maybe a hair faster than my M45 but it does have 10 yrs of newer technology in that V6. Later.

Replace your cam and crank sensors - pretty common with stallling and not throwing codes
