Another Y33 from the hawaii

I haven't been able to update all of you guys on my newest pick up this past week, but this afternoon i had the time to take some photos of my 1999 Q45! I picked it up this past monday & i'm very satisfied with my purchase. I ain't in no rush to build this car. Just to let ya'll know, this will be a "slow" build. I'm gonna take my time with this car because i plan on keeping this car for quite a while. Everything runs smooth & everything works. 132,xxx miles. Front bumper is fading a little & some paint chips (as you can see in one of the photos below). The clear coat is peeling a little but not noticable from afar. It's been very well maintained & the previous owner was a mechanic. The only thing i have to replace pretty soon is the VCG! Burning oil when i drive! :saiyancrunks: Overall, like i said, i'm really happy with this car. Lmk what ya'll think!

A teaser:

Thanks man. Yeah I did my hw about doing the spark plugs w/ the vcg. And since Im not too sure when the previous owner got the spark plugs changed, I might as well do it. What spark plugs do I use? If i remember correctly I use NGK platinum?

Here's some night shots of the Q with the hid's on. The previous ownder saved me precious time by installing some 8k's (i think) in the headlights & 3k for the fogs. But i think i'm gonna switch out the 8k's for the stock white or 6k hids & break from the traditional yellow fogs that EVERYONE seems to love doing & go with a different color but dont know what color yet (also, either on VSC or NICO, i've came upon that thread talking about the proper use of the fog light & having colored lights for it, etc, so don't bash on me about this because i live in HI & we don't get fog so i don't care about the proper use of the fogs. I like the looks of it!). So this is the set up im gonna be running for now.

I'm not too worried about the lighting. Suspension is the first thing I wanna do. I got bc coils in mind for my budget I'm on right now. Then air later down the line. What susp. did you start off with? Or you got air from the beginning?

Forget the Stock Nazi's over at Nico. I am NOT a fan of teh yello wfogs either. I matched my headlights with 8000K all around headluights and fogs. I like everything to match though rather than have color headlight, another high beam color, a third fog light color, and then still have the amber turn signal too.

Lol at stock nazis :smiley-rofl: yeah i don't mind that set up with the matching lights either. But I saw this set up in my VIP mag that the Japan guys do with their lights & it looked pretty sick to me! So I wanna run that set up too. Japan goes hard! :saiyancrunks:

TODAY: Ok, so i've mentioned that i need to get my VCG replaced for my car & i've called some local shops around my area & even the infiniti dealership for some price quotes. First shop told me an estimate of around $600-700 just for the VCG. Second shop quoted me around $400 (if i bring in my own parts) - $600 at the most for VCG + spark plugs (added on $25 more). Third shop quoted me $300 for labor + parts (he said i can bring in my own parts if its cheaper that way), this was also just for the VCG. The dealer, i just called to get quotes on the gaskets which came out to about $40/ea. So to me, my best bet would be either the second shop which was gonna be a VCG + spark plug job or the third shop which is the $300 + parts. What do you guys think? what are the usual prices a VCG + spark plug job go for?

just be careful bout small shops...esp if they havent worked on infinitis....thats where alot of shoddy jobs are done. yes, dealers are more expensive....but we, yes I, techs work on these things on the norm so we know what to do and look out for.

Thanks for the input lowlyfey34. The second shop works on a lot of nissans/infinitis so im kinda leaning more toward that shop if anything. How much do dealers charge usually anyway? & does the prices i posted up sound Legit or what?

Nah we never get fog in hawaii! At most we get what is called "vog which is kinda like fog caused from the volcano (volcano fog). It also isn't heavy where we would need the fog lights for proper use. It is different.

i remember my first gen ls400 had those yellow caps in the fogs that made the yellow a deep yellow. I'm fine with my green fogs though. it's something that you'd need to see in person.

So today, i brought my Q in to replace my valve cover gaskets (OEM), change out my spark plugs (NGK platinums), & an oil change service since it was that time already. All this + labor for $590, including a little discount from the mechanic (i found my go to mechanic for all my engine related needs for my Q ). Some of you might/not agree with the price i paid, but im ok with it. Dealer would've probably broke my wallet! But now my Q's running smooth again. I was gonna visit the shop during lunch & take a few photos to share with ya'll on what's being done to the Q, but didn't have the time, and my car was finished sooner than i expected.

My mechanic also pointed out that the belt connected to the fan was cracking & the P/S hose was brittle & leaking. Im gonna have to replace those in a little while. But that's the update on my Q so far. Trying to save up for suspension next!!!!!

If ya'll from hawaii, & looking for a mechanic in the leeward area, i recommend you guys to go see Glenn from G's Auto in Waipio. Tell'em Sean sent you  Excellent dude, great customer service, & great prices

Trying to save up for suspension next!!!!!

i checked to see what the bulb size is and i think its 168. but i remembered i saved all my leds from my ls400 & the stock bulbs had the same backing as the leds (as pictured below) so it fit.

Save the little things. Work on that suspension. In terms of quality. I can't say what parts are better because I've always been on jdm coils but when you talk convenience and the availability of parts when things go wrong I suggest you go through a distributor in the u. S. bc. PBM Megan. Airrex. Insurance algernon don't currently have u. S. representation. These are the things you need to consider especially if you drive it daily.

This is my main concern, aside from the maintenance. Gonna be saving up for a while. Probably next year i'll be on the ground w/ coilovers, but for now im just saving.

Yup there is no room for errors. Might as well do things right the first time. Currently collecting my change to pick up some coilovers

But anyways no updates on anything new I did to the Q. Just gave her a bath today. That's it

Oh man, i forgot to update this thread from what i've been doing to my Q :pat: This thread got buried that i almost forgot that i even made this thread lol.

Anyways here's the update on what's been done so far. I've had my valve cover gaskets replaced, changed my spark plugs, and threw in an oil change. All done from this great quality mechanic i found around my area.

Well that's pretty much it so far. I'm still saving up for suspension though. Tax returns came in & i'm a little closer to those coils. Gotta save up more though.
