1998 Q45 build

Going to try and give the vip build a shot. i've been in the 240sx scene for a little bit so i thought i'd expand my horizons.

i picked this car up about 6 months ago with the hope of working on it sooner, but my other priorities came before this and never had the chance. now that i have a little more time and cash flow i figure i'd start.

i first decided to tend to the body: i began buffing out all the water spots and swirl marks/imperfections.

thx, being i'm from oahu parts are a little harder to source, and when you do find them they are a little more pricey.

i have the load of parts for the car, but i dont have the capabilities to put them on. and i dont warrant paying someone to do it.

havent really heard about them but ill look into it. im going with the s14 suspension swap, i already got the s14 lcas, s13 knuckles, s13 uprights with ichiba 5 lug, 300zx 30mm alum brakes, spl inner and outer tie rods, tein tension rods, and jic s13 fla coilovers with 14 top hats in the rear.

i am going to throw bags eventually, but the set i bought got jacked from my garage.

Build Looks good bro... what did you use to take off the water spots? i need to do that.

i first used acs acid wash on the whole car, after that i used mx7 water spot remover from redline.  Make sure you get the one for paint. i wore gloves and applied it with a 100% cotton towel. after that i hit it with 3m rubbing compound on a white wool cutting pad, then hit it with a medium yellow cutting pad with the same 3m compound, lastly i used adams swirl and haze remover on a black foam buffing pad. all at 1400 rpm on my rotary buffer. 

lastly i hit it by hand with meguiars (sp?) showroom finish glaze.

yeah i am on oahu, so its going to be one hell of an expensive job. haha

if the water spots arent that heavy i would recommend using the mx7 for paint. about 13 bucks a bottle. it takes a little bit of elbow grease if you have stubborn water spots. its a chemical so make sure you test it out on a spot thats not readily visible because it can react with your paint.

the only down side to it is, if you have heavy calcium build up, you will need to hit it with some kind of cleaner wax or compound. just make sure you go from least aggressive to most aggressive, bc once you burn through theres no turning back.

Whats up bro? looks like a good start i cant wait to see how this car comes along. well if anything you dont have to do the S14 suspension swap if u dont have to cus Megan racing now make a pretty good coilover setup for $900 or so. check out their site

i tried looking into the megan setup, but when i looked on their website i couldnt find it. 

i actually am a 240 fanatic so i have all the parts already, i just wanted to try and make my car as unique as possible. i know alot of ppl have done the swap before, but not to many on the islands have. i know it will eliminate the sway bar, but body roll isnt much of a concern to me as i have my other 240s to handle my sideways needs.

so with my crushed l3 vertebrae and herniated back i was able to put in a little work on the q.

over the span of a week, i was able to change out the rusted to ish moonroof, with a glass sunroof. it was a 99 sunroof that went in the 98. it was pretty straight forward, and bolted in. the only differences between each was, the velcrow push in patches were placed differently, there is 2 additional drain tubes for the sunroof which i just installed, and there was one less wire. 

the hardest part to it would have to have been routing the drain hoses, the pass side had a provision for another tube which i pushed right on. but on the drivers side i had to T off the drain tube for my new hose.

so i got bored today and started to dig out some of my parts so i can slap them on when it stops raining.

Did u have to take out ur headliner to put inthe sunroof?

yes we did have to, there was no way we could get it out of the car with the seats in there so we just dropped it down and worked around it. 

reinstalling the headliner was probably the most tedious part of the job. considering i did it myself.

This is exactly what i did.  purchased a 98 q45t black on black, then just happened to find a wrecked 98t with black on black as well. Identical cars, great way to keep parts replacement cheap. If you want some bags i have some ksports that i may be selling soon bnib. Pm me if interested.

i run s14 stance for now. ride is great!

the only bad part about my parts car was that it was moss green on tan. though the car i parted out only had 25k on the clock.sorry but k sports aint really my thing. i was looking for another set of uas bags, since mines got stolen from my garage.

alex (i presume thats your name) which series stance coilovers are you running?

has anyone had any luck interchanging top hats from one manufacturer to another. 

i've found y33 front top hats/camber plates (cusco) and tein rears. i am still unsure if they will fit on jics. anyone???

I have the JIC camber plates on my fronts but I had to use bolts from the cusco plates for them to fit on my airrunner set up

figured those were the years, my neighbor has a 2000 q45 and hers is glass also, imo, its alot more functional than a metal sunroof, and one less thing that can rust out.

i dont have any more updates yet for the q45, but my latest project has been taking up some of my time. 95 kouki conversion.

fuck that.... suspension is for all to share. cuz even though we might run the same setup it's what you do with it that counts. ride height v.s. wheel and tire set up.

besides i just ordered a custom set of coils for the s14 with the y33 camber plates already attached! so my setup will be for sale soon enough:dance:

need some advice,

is there any difference between a taller stacked coil compared to a shorter stack besides height adjust ability?would it ride any different? both have the same spring rate.

my best guess would be that the shorter stack would be a little more bouncy and stiff, but i just wanted to reconfirm

just a shorter coil? or shorter coilover? i know the shorter coilovers have much more travel at lower heights. which = a good ride. my friend had a setup like that on his first gen Q45. ride was nice. not sure if that answered your question

shoots np man, i actually used the taller stack of coils bc in my opinion i felt that it may give a little more than a shorter stack.  

when i used to be a lowrider using a shorter stack gave you a poor ride and less rebound.

thanks to JDMpalace, my continuous curtain ties came in. i was under the impression that they were made out of polyester, but to my suprise they are leather/vinyl. +1 for an even better deal.

the weather here has been terrible so i havent been able to wrench on the Q very much, but i have managed to get an hr or so in here and there. this is the progress.

This pic shows my 19x10 +5 work euroline rim on the drivers rear of the q. the jic links and stance coilovers are installed in this pic. but i ended up opting to take them off to install something else. this is the lowest the stance coilovers could go by adjusting the lower mount.

heres a pic of the rim off the vehicle. i bought them used but they are in pretty fair shape considering i paid $1100 with brand new tires on a set of 19x10 +5, 19x9.5 +22 set of work eurolines.  ill get the tire size and brand later when i dig all of them out of my storage shed.

installed here are all the jic links, toe, camber and traction, everything bolted up smoothly. also shown is the new s13 coilover setup with stance coil and top hat. what i didnt get was why the coilover is tilted at such an extreme angle. its not visible but the coilover setup is tilted at about a 70 degree angle

stance gr+ pro i believe. i took it apart and used the hardware, top hat and spring on the jic strut.

lastly i have a pic of the JIC rear coilover taken apart, i installed all the stance parts on the strut with ease, the only thing that gave me slight concern is that the top nut needed to be threaded down farther than with the original top hat and the stance spring was approx 2 mm larger than the lower spring seat so it has slight play. to minimize the amt of play i preloaded the spring.

kingpin, i almost got the formula down to a T but the only part i have to memorize is the - offset. haha


well it stopped raining again this afternoon so i went down to dial in my setup a little finer. i installed a 10 mm spacer on the rear and cambered her in a little more. rolled my fenders so the inner lip is pushed in a little bit, but not to the point where it looks flared on the outside. i feel that the q45's lines are perfect so i didnt want to hinder it. 

what you dont see in the pics is my curtains, kintuna, fusa, continuous ties, pillows and kneck rests... all JP. ill try and snap a pic of that when i can, but i figure everyone and their moms grandma knows what those look like.

haha yep, when i go down to work on the car its overcast but still sunny, once i pull all my tools out, lift the car and take off the rim it starts pouring. i guess thats just how it is.

Just the bags?

yep for the most part just the bags and possibly the steel backing plate which it bolts to. 

i've got most of the other setup from my regal. but i may want to change up the compressor bc i've got the bached version of AZ's line.

heres where my car sits, 1" off the lip of the rim and the bottom of the rear bumper sits approximately 8" off the ground

this is the best uptop shot i could get, the upper lip sits flush with the fender well while the bottom of the rim sits about 1.5" out. im not sure what my camber is set to. i still have to take it to the alignment shop once i do the fronts.

stock brakes with my battle version tension rods, i will be doing a comparison of 300zx 30mm aluminums with these q45s tom.

on the left is the s13 top hats from the silkroad coilovers and on the right are the y33 cusco top hats. to make them fit on the silk roads i had to use the silk road top spring perch-------> y33 top hats-----> silk road inner filler nut/washer----> silk road nut to hold it all in place.

the small piece on the right is suppsed to go between the strut landing and the silk road top hat (came with the cusco y33 tops) but the diameter of the center hold is way to small.

these are a picture of the silk road coilovers with the silk road top hats. fronts. when the silk roads were on a s13 they slammed the vehicle out. upon comparing it to the stock y33 springs and struts, this height will give the q45 a 1.3 ft drop. LOL

i managed to break, dent, go backwards more than i did forward today. i noticed that somehow i kinked my qtr, then my stupid friend tried to tap the wheel well back with heat n shrink the metal, but in doing so he added more dents. 

oh well it will get done sooner or later, and plus, wheres the fun if there aint hurdles

its fairly hard to see, but im trying to show the inner tie rod and locking metal piece behind it and how it doesnt line up with the inner rod end. in this case i couldnt get the locking ring off, so i lock tight(ed) the inner rod on and im going to leave the lock ring and cover it with the boot.

nah, battery dies when it sits for more than 4 days. so im guessing the short is pretty severe. havent really had a chance to look into it yet.

other than that i have to change out the o2 sensors and knock sensors. 8 mpg for the win!!!!

i was planning on scooping up a kit and bags for it, but my medical bills finally came in for my busted back and now i cant afford anything else for the car but gas.

the good part about finally being able to drive the car is that it turns heads wherever i go, from young aspiring vipers to middle aged families.

ok, so every time i take a step forward with the car i take two steps backward.

last night when i was driving, my outer tie rod joints rod end managed to snap in half.no abuse, just an easy left hand turn. 

i guess thats the last time im buying anything from peak performance

wow.. you had the same problem too. I worked at a shop and had that happen twice to two drift cars. one time after a warm up and broke in pits. and another while out on track

yep, i just found out that one of my friends was warming up his tires before a session, and both of his busted at the same time.

ok so i finally got my megan outer tie rod ends to replace my peak performance ones. the quality of these look to be worse than the peaks and look as if they are pewter metal, hopefully they hold up longer.

anyone not use the spacers on their rod ends?

i think those spacers are to change out if you are going s13, or s14 spindle.

Even if this rod end breaks, you could probably just get some replacement QA1 heims and be done with it.  

I ended up finding a set of S14 Teins for a good price.

i felt that the teins didnt fit my application, so i went with a spl look alike design. i already ended up buying a set of megan outers so i wont need to go with qa1s replacements. plus my passenger side (non faulty side) was bent almost to ish when i uninstalled it to put my megans on.

I have the exacts same ones on my Y33 and haven't had any problems, they came off my drift s13

i was able to get a bunch of time in to work on the car today.

fixed all the water leaks in the trunk for the time being. reason being, im going to be replacing the rusted out areas with a non rusted trunk pan.

i finally finished my floor board which everything will mount to. in the pics you will see that i am going for a stock clean look for now

lastly i got my rear bags mocked up and i filed a hole out for my fitting.

my rear coilover. if you look closely you will see a gap where i am thinking about putting a bracket. if i use a bracket the bag will not sit up against the top hat.

you need those upper plates.. the material where the plates bolt up is made of some kind of plastic, its very unsafe to run without the metal top plates.. We have them at the shop if you need them. 

ALso dont over tighten the fittign into the bag.. it cracks easy!

Also I would change that Push to connect fitting.. it will not last..

Also I love how you did this. very creative..but not safe at all.. but like i said before where those bolts go in its made of plastic. you need more metal support other than just the locking ring. We are making the right plates that thread on to the coil overs.. In fact we just had a set of coil overs just like the ones you have.. we were supposed to make the brackets for it but the owner decided to take it back.. dont know if your the same person or not..

I ran them from the valves inside the trunk to the front bags along each side of the frame rails and secured them with these plastic wiring clamps on the driver side. On the pass side I secured them with the fuel/brake line cover things that come on the Q

it was actually me that was going to have them done, but i was going to try and run them how you have seen in the pictures. if all else fails i am going to try and run the brackets that come with the aerosport bags.

I dont know if this helps but i ran my front lines and power wire together through a drilled hole next to the booster on the firewall using a grommet and then a hole at each front stut tower for individual line
 
the rear passenger through a rubber drain plug and the rear driver a hole drilled under the back seat rest using 1/4 lines

for my passenger side i am running it through a drain plug in the qtr panel which is approximately 2" in diameter with a rubber hose around the edges so it doesnt cut through my 1/2 line.  it was a pain in the ass to get my lines to bend how i needed them to.  a little heat, patients, tweaking and a bunch of profanity made it work.  although its not how i originally planned it, it will hopefully do the job.


as for the drivers side i was looking under the vehicle and found almost nothing. i was actually going to do something similar to y34. finding a nice place away from heat and up against the body, i was going to drill a hole and isolate it with a gromet.

i was unsure whether to stick with az or go with viair. pros and cons vsc?

air zeniths are known to have to being rebuilt alot and cost wise you can get 2 viairs for the same price of one airzenith and fill faster and are more reliable.

near the rear bag, i had to bend the inner wheel well lip a little bit so it wouldnt put as much tension on the airline going to the rear bag. 

heres a few questions that arose when i was doing my airline.
-how heat resistant are these dot lines?
- is it okay to use moderate heat to shape them?
-what is the most extreme angle these things can bend at?
-on the front of my car the coilover turns with the wheel, how did you guys mount the line away from the rim and tire, while at the same time letting it move around freely so the airline doesnt rip out of the bag?

I'm going to try and run all my lines through the cab as much as possible drill holes and place grommets if needed.

i looked under my carpet and all the places which i figured i could run my line, but it is simply to large to run under the carpet without it looking like a tremor is stirring under my feet.

ok guys i am stumped, i have absolutely no idea how to do my front lines.

i ran the lines from the back of the car to the front, but.... after my last mounting point on the frame rail, the line is free floating going to the bag. the line is extremely rigid and binds when the wheel turns (i am running 1/2 OD lines).  since my lines are of a larger size than normal, all of the tips i have gotten from others running 1/4" lines will not apply to my application.

i've went to our local hydraulic/air store and they had nothing which they said will work for me. 

my current idea was to use a distribution block with a compression or ptc fitting on one side. on the other side i was going to install a flexible steel braided line to the bag. but like i said they had no parts to fit my application. 

can anyone help me out?

Run the line from the back to a junction box that you can bolt to the wheel well. Run a stainless line from there to the bag. No different than a brake line setup. Or fly me out and I will do it. :)

alright, now i catch. thx kouki. i will see what my local retailer has, but im not sure if they have it in 1/2 od lines. i was trying to explain it to him on friday, but he seemed a little slow.

Honestly, 1/2" lines bend like tree branches.  Surprisingly, 3/8" line is much easier to bend.  For the front bag, I'd probably run a braided stainless piece from the bag to the DOT airline.  Also, follow it with the brake line.  Brake line will do the same thing as that air line as far as movement.  I, personally, would not run a swivel.  Only swivels I've seen have broken. 
If you can't get the stainless braided line there, you can probably get it online.  They will use different fittings than air fittings.  The stainless line fittings will probably be AN and you'll have to run an adapter to convert it to an NPT fitting.

my lines are 1/2 OD DOT air line, it goes to my bag and goes from the 1/2 to the inlet ptc to a 1/4 npt on the other end.

so this weekend was hella flush, i was looking at the lines which ppl ran from their tanks to their bags. on a majority of the vehicles a qtr inch line was run from the back of the vehicle to the front.

with that said here is my question, can i run a compression fitting which minimizes my 1/2 line to a 1/4 line to my bag without any problems? looking at a few of the premade lines which cost upward of $70 doesnt seem to make sense when i can run a $10 line to $20 worth of fittings.

i finally put all my research together and finally got my front line routed and done with. 
 
i will post pics later, but as of now i have to drink away my 5 hrs total road time, and 3 hrs total labor time. im pretty sure i seen relief at the bottom of my heineken bottle.

kinda, i had to buy a steel braided line for the rear bc when my cars fully dumped in the rear the inner wheel well lip would sit on the line and kink it.

other then that, i took apart my interior and made my custom gauge sheet metal piece to sit in my cup holder.

stupid me, i shoulda just jumped on the bandwagon and ran 1/4 lines like everyone else. these 1/2 lines just aint cutting it.

to everyone else trying to run anything beyond 3/8" lines, i wouldnt suggest it on a vip car

If you have a pry bar you can move the panels under your car and run 1/2 lines tucked by your fuel lines thats what I did.

Just a suggestion for your compressors try to remove the bumper and cut angle iron and nut and bolt the angles to your rear bumper brace you can hide your compressor and have a cleaner look in the trunk. just a suggestion.

i exhausted all my ideas as to how i could run my lines without using a steel braided section, but i did not see any way. my drivers side was binding a lot more than my passenger side. im nearly certain the fuel lines were on the pass side.

im not sure if i want to run the comps under the car. i actually have a small space behind my tank and under my valves that could house my compressors while giving it a somewhat clean look.

so today i was able to get a little work in despite the small 3.3 quake and the soaked grounds from the storm last night.

finally plumbed up my rear steel braided line to my bag. this now solved the issue of my car sitting ontop my line and crushing it.

other then that, i was able to build my gauge pod which will sit inside my cup holder located in my center council and was able to clearence a bit of my air duct inside my center council which routes ac to the rear seats.

ill post a picture of my gauge pod and my line in a bit, but as for my air duct, it wont be necessary bc it looks like crap.

I had 3/8 on my 2000 q45 and it was way to quick for me airing up and down.  running 1/4 will be easier on you and slow down the air system.  I ran 3/8 inside my car also. didnt drill any holes but found grommets and stuff to run them through. Built my kit just like you did. exact same compressor!!!

in the long run i am planning on redoing my setup so its no biggie.

Any chance you have a video of you car airing up and deflating? I read 3/8 was perfect so I ordered 3/8 lines. I currently have 1/4 lines and heard those were too slow. I haven't installed my air suspension so I don't know how fast the 1/4 lines are.

i currently have my 1/8 lines for my gauges and my gauges set in a pod but i havent worked on anything yet.

this picture is kind of blurry, but its my 1/8 air lines routed through the drivers side opening which routes the wiring from the trunk to the cab. this is an existing piece.

this pic shows where my gauges will be routed.
this is in the center council. so what i did was i pulled my cup holder retainer out from the center council to expose this area which is seen in the picture. i then used a 2" hole saw and drilled two holes. my gauges wont be sitting on these holes, but rather these holes had to be cut to clear my fittings, wiring and lines.

what you cannot see in the picture is the ac duct which routes its self from the dash to the vent located at the back of the center council. i had to use some heat to clearence the vent. also on the passenger side gauge hole i had to remove a bracket which held some of the harnesses in place. both mainly for clearence.

this last picture shows my 450 valves, my fittings, my lines and my ptcs. i didnt piping tape the 1/8 fitting yet.

i used 55 ft of 1/8 tube to go from my trunk to my gauges.

this setup may not be the cleanest and im sure its subject to criticism, but then again this is my first vip setup. and i have a long time till v.2 comes out.

heres my pod, yes they are two diff gauges, i did that to help me keep track of what gauge is for the front and back.

offcentered bc of the ac duct that lies below it, im probably gonna put some sort of decoration below it. gonna finish the plate in pleather.

as of now the step ive taken on the car is a step back. the other week a friend of mine did a few doris and lost control. smashing into my door, wheel, fender, and pushed my car into the curb thus damaging my opposite wheel in the crash. so win.

2: Modified K-break

caliper. Benz doesnt really offer a floater rotor.

sorry to bump an old thread but what did you ever end up doing to the front inner fender to go lower when you are out?

i channel locked the seam and hammered it.

havent done much to the car since, other than picking up a stronger set of rear rims.

so i am going to start working on the car again. 

i wanted to clear up one thing before i started again.  

i wanted to align my car but was uncertain at what point to align it at. ride height or at full dump? i was going to go with this aligning to do my fender work so i needed feedback before messing up the fenders.

Align at ride height.

haha i havent done any work to the inner fender wells and the inner fender reinforcements yet. so full dump= dragging tires on body, asphault and manning it over raised manhole covers.
