GS400 BACK BURNER BUILD - NOTHING FANCY

So here's my belated intro (I'm on CL & Lextreme also ...My names Joel. I'm 28 will be 29 here shortly. I just got married back in Sep. to my GF and child's mother after 10years of dating. Commitment issues? No way! LOL Also we just had our 2nd baby girl in Dec. I just bought my first "lexus'' and it will be a learning process. I hope to learn and share as much as I can, and meet some new cool people along the way! Exchange connections, tips, tricks, and the like.

Proud to say my new-USED GS4 w/NAVI ( boo, now that I witnessed how outdated it is ) ....:woot:

So I was skeptical of buying this car, but I did, picked it up over the weekend. The engine is said to have been blown, as I asked around, I received a form of confirmation by another forum member. He wrote, " the #8 big end is done." So now it's time to take action. I don't know If I'll rebuild it ( if it's rebuildable ) or just replace it. After a few more tests, a oil pan drop, if all results agree with his statement I'll pull the motor and tear it down.

Cons
* Driver Seat & Armrest torn leather
* Scuffed F & R Bumpers
* Bad Psngr. Door Regulator
* Bad engine

I began removing the covers & spark plugs. ( I know at bare minimum headgasket on that bank is done and seals on the other bank. )

after I removed 8 I stuck this extension in the cylinder as I could not see down the hole w/ the batt. in the way as my flash light mirror number didn't cut it.

I found this hose split in half goes to a solenoid on the IM, driver side upper. It's not a fresh wound as you can tell. no signs of hand prints, and or fresh rubber in the tear. So add that to the list during repair.

side note I found this plugged?????

Diagnostic Techniques ( that were included w/ gauge kit )

1. Oil in dipstick tube indicates psi. escaping from the cyl. into the oil jacket. This usually indicated stuck, burned or worn rings or cyl. walls

2. Radiator filler opening bubbles or sound indicates psi escaping into the coolant jacket. This can indicate cracked cyl. walls or damaged head gasket. In case of a damaged head gasket, often two or more adjacent cyl. will show the same problem

3. Adjacent cyl. indicates a damaged HG.

4. Tail pipe indicates burned, stuck or worn exh. valve.

5. Carb or IM indicates stuck, burned or worn intake valve

Yes, but technically no, I'm a "technician." Mechanics or the root word of mechanics is a parts changer. Technicians are more on the diagnosis and follow up w/ repair type.

There's a little more carnage than that, and I didn't cause it, LOL I purchased the vehicle in this shape. Either way your right I do need to take action.

Well since I just got the car, I do not know that it's 100% as the previous owner said. So no matter how much I want to rebuild it, spending all that money on a reinforced long block wouldn't be the best option for me. It'll be double the cost of the replacement engine I found, and that has really low mileage and a 6month warranty. So I'd rather get the entire car on par, before I blow money on one aspect and still have to deal with issues that may arise inconveniently. Life seems funny that way some times.

Those are not appealing to me. Maybe a 2jz is more so. Both of those choices are sickening setups, just not my cup of Tea. Before I pay for a 2jz I would rather build a forged internal v8. But to reverse engineer a car/my car by means of swapping in a 6cyl for a v8, I would have just bought a 300. I am happy w/ the sound of future tweaking of a 4.0L. So that's fine by me. I don't want to be the fastest nor the prettiest, or the man who just calls of parts that sound well on a roll call. I just want to keep it's "idea" intact, and have a fun wholesome commuter.

So I had some free time today, and went outside to play w/ the GS. Long story short I have decided to a head(s) job before I buy a new engine. If it doesn't work, then more than likely I'll just rebuild it, before buying a used LB for $900 in an unknown condition I'd rather just invest in my current one. If I get rich while the engines out, I'll just spring for the full rebuild.

so here's some pics from today..... It appears the timing is correct according to the manual.

I wasted time playing with that IM, but it was an experience so knowledge learned. Motors so dirty I'm just gonna pull it. Plus I have had a customer trans rebuild goin on, my grandmas avalon servicing, my civic part-out going on, to top off last week my wife was hit and totaled the accord on the 25th. Pulled it out the tow yard today, so Her car is here now, going to be parted out also. Bzzzzzzzzzzz't.....Buzzy as a bumble bee!

GS gets the love trickling downhill for now........

Didn't have much time but I got a few more items out the way. Think I'm switching to pulling the whole motor and cleaning house.

Borrowed this awesome tool to aide in the crank pulley removal

I guess it's not really an update because it's a partial teaser. It's not what you think but the wheels I've always wanted for this car have arrived, in work boxes. Since the moment I saw these wheels I knew I'd buy them, no matter the cost. So I put the rebuild on the back burner just to purchase these rims ahead of schedule, at a "bargain price" IMO.

19x9.5/10.5 - Better teasers later on....gotta find some tires and a good fender roller puller man! :D

Sup clutch/John. You would have seen me 4 times but I paid by phone to save gas LOL.

I don't speak on the wife's ride because it was totaled , plus it had too much poke rofl.

The only reason I'm choosing to rebuild my engine is for longevity and reliability. As far as I can forsee I don't plan on selling the GS and when I come to that fork in the road maybe a supercharger. So I want it to be capable of handling the upgrade without me worrying.

LOL well I'm glad I'm mechanically inclined. In all honesty I'm just shooting for reliability. Those engines may have warranty, but I'd hate to have to pull it again. I'd rather spend the extra $400 and drive w/ a piece of mind.

The good news in I'm in no rush, but I do plan to start the rebuild here soon. Just need to set aside a day to finish pulling the engine.

I dont want to play devils advocate but I think you're taking a risk with this car. And Im only saying this from personal experience. Ive bought cheap cars that needed fixing before and from my experience its a crap shoot. Usually something like this (blown motor) indicates either poor maintenance, abuse, or high milage. In all cases, I would be worried about the rest of the drivetrain, as well as other aspects of the car. And I imagine it only gets more complicated when you're dealing with "newer" luxury cars, which can be much more complex than an average "older" car. I hope you were able to drive the car while the motor was blown (still running) to test the transmission and make sure it works, as well as a check on the fluids of the other drivetrain components (trans and diff). It would be a bad experience to go through the trouble and expense of rebuilding or replacing this motor, to then find out the transmission is blown as well. I know this post seems like a downer. The only reason Im saying this stuff is because it appears you are still at a turning point with this car, where you have not invested big money into a repair (yet) and still at a diagnostic phase. Assuming you got the car for rock bottom prices, it might be a candidate for a parts car for another GS with a better record, or more reliable drivetrain. That is an option. The recommendations here about swapping the motor are also a good possibility, another option. 2JZ motor/trans into the GS chassis is a common swap for these cars, though Im sure there are specifics on what year/model cars make the best candidates. In any event, I hope it works out for you. Would be great to see the car on the road again, with the new wheels, and no more teasers hehehe

I guess I'm a rare breed. Despite whatever headaches this car may bring, I believe the car chooses the owner and not vice versa. The car still starts up believe it or not. The previous owner had preformed the timing belt service 3 days before. They were on there way home from vegas when he noticed steam pumping from the hood. He showed me a video he had recorded and it seems to have been spraying at the water neck just below the IM. So I bought it. After my tests only the passenger side head had the bad gasket. Knowing myself I choose to rebuild/replace the engine. Preferably rebuild for a piece of mind. I want to FI the v8 later in life.

The good news is I'm a mechanic, and my specialty is transmissions. :D I thought about a 2jz swap, but it's not for me. It's only 4-5k, but I WANTED a V8, if I was going to 2J it I would have looked out for a 300s during the hunt. Either way I go putting money into this car is a win, because it will be customized the way I like it, for the price of mild modded ones being sold today. I don't doubt that there will be some surprises, but I pray it wont be many, and I hope the wrong car did not choose me. HAHAHA

In light of all that mumbo jumbo, Crazy H I appreciate you sharing your wisdom. Many times ppl. say dont do this or that for whatever reason. You actually presented a case w/ supporting facts & solution.

Alright guys, finally after beating myself over the head. The motor is out! Tomorrow is the tear down and inspection. Depending on the amount of whats salvageable I'll either rebuild or buy another motor. If I can rebuild it for little to nothing I may freshen up the transmission as well. Inspect other aspects of the car tomorrow also.

Things on my most important to buy list as of now: ( suggestions welcomed )
Starter
Oil Pump
Water Pump
Timing Belt
PPE Headers
Lower Ball Joints
Core Support
Radiator
Trans Cooler
Fan
Hood Shocks

P.S. If anyone wishes to donate a harness I'd appreciate it, I got some broken connectors that happened pre-hand ownership, and I personally broke one today.

HAHA Tell me about it. This is what happens when you give avg. female woman a car too big for their budget.

Thanks Ninja.

Please. If you ever sell your car it would give a buyer a piece of mind. I'd definitely saving all receipts for this car. I will not stand for what was done to me, LOL ( I was aware it needed an engine, but if it didn't, it would have by now anyway ).

Some updates I wasn't able to post earlier. As I was getting dressed for work today, my door bell rings. I thought to myself, " who in the world can that be?" So my wife answers the door an I hear a small bit of rustling, nothing disturbing. After I'm finish I head downstairs, as I approach the box I start mumbling "what the heck is that?" when the light flicks on in my brain I get all excited NEW ACCESSORIES!!! ( smiling like kid with candy ).:dance::dance:

Boring updates, just experimenting w/ some parts since I have down town. Cleaned & I tried the black wrinkle finish. Mirrors the carbon composite fuel rails on the market, so kinda cool. Used a brilliant pipe cleaner I got from my welder. More pics later as I coat/refinish/freshen up old parts.

Before and after solution w/ a light scrub

So this is where I began to catch up my thread on CL back on 3.18.12

small updates...had to pick up a few things for the body shop to replace before they get to work.

I didn't notice it at first, and it was bugging me for the longest. When I finally got a chance to see for myself on a friends GS the highlighted area became my "pet peeve" to fix.

SIKE, haha locked the y33 in the garage once i heard of your build's progress.
I got a f50 as a daily now so I don't know what I'm doing, pretty much just sitting back & enjoying all these builds.
Any who is it still the "color" you showed me months back?

You Ben baller mofo. Swing by one day, is it all stock? I sold, my sedan too, bought a brohoe for the wife & family. :D

Yeah I'm still painting the GS that color I showed you. If I don't it'll just be another black GS, and another black car in my fleet. So if I change my mind on colors, expect another jet black beauty.

Just a verbal update, as I replied to some ?'s on CL. Replica bodykit was more than what I could bare - deal with. I had called in the "factory kit fitter" and he made it worse IMO, well not to my liking so I sold it. The wheels I had planned for this car are up for sale, because I found a overall better choice and now I plan on building a custom kit :D........slowly

Compounding issues with my 1uzfe engine builder and finding a good block to rebuild have significantly contributed to this slow build. Ive expanded the family a bit, thanks to the Lord; we added a son to the clan! He's now 2months old. Somewhere in the MIA time, I sold my Murk'd civic sedan, & Picked up a z1 tahoe, again with the Lords blessing for the family. So I've just been away enjoy life as it happens.

amongst the mess I've been having some fun. I had bought an 04 sti and had some of the best times of my life behind a steering wheel. Later I sold it to fund this GS build but I bought parts to turn my 05 RS to sti instead. So now I'm torn which to finish first. Currently in litigation w/ pomona P.D. because they are trying to take away my RHD civic project I grew out of.

my 04 sti

my 05 rs to sti thats lingering like my gs

and lastly I picked up a ucf10 a few weeks back for a daily cruiser, until I get my mind right and my paper up. To get back in this thing. Right now with Family, the holidays, my shop, Gripset, and website in the works I rarely find time and money to focus on cars. I'm not out, just down at the moment..............LURKING! :D

I've been babbling about a rebuildable core for eons, and it finally manifested months ago. So I yesterday I got off my lazy over worked under paid butt and dropped my block off at the machine shop for some glass beading. I'd like to have a fresh appearance for the rebuild. Still debating on leaving it a natural finish or painting the entire engine assembly various finishes of black.

p.s. I also sold the ls400 pictured above. now focusing on my impreza.

So it's been a looooooong delay with the cams................super frustrating. I almost feel like just buying an aristo 2jz clip. Amazing how entrusting one man with key components can start holding up a engine build. The ripple effects are so deep, regardless the show must go on. The engine builder stopped by and took a few pcs & then some to get things started. This week my focus is on getting my cams back.

Off she goes w. crank

NONE..... since this car became a fiasco. I've decided to start a subaru project. After the subaru is done, then I'll play with this. I have a few big choices to make next as far as valve train and bucket type, but I have to wait for the spec card to be emailed to me and then I can go from there..

Ain't that the truth. We joke around about this car day in day out. Never outsourcing a build ever again. I'll just pick up a manual and learn. But, Thanks Tim. We can definitely help you on that H. Text me the year so I can tell you even if it's worth a shot. Some H's you can't really "rebuild." as for the subaru, yeah, I missed my 04 STI after I sold it, so now it's time to build her "vicious" replacement. LOL
