Squad One LS430 Las Vegas
Sup everyone. It's been long over due. Almost 2 years into this project. As much as I like a good build thread I couldn't really find the time nor did I want to let everyone hanging for so long. It was a tough build and it's still not complete. But we thought we should show it off to everyone as it is right now.
This is a 04 LS430 that started off black on black. We bought it off a friend/team member. He already had the wheels and suspension on it. The first thing we did was lower it more then eventually bag it up. And unfortunately someone decided they did not like the car and went to town with a good key job. Well we saw this as an opportunity to change the color since it has to get painted. Then we decided just to do a complete build with interior.
The car is not mine, it is my friends car and he let me go crazy on it. And he's not on the board. But whatever I wanted to do I would run it by him. He originally had some simple typical ideas in mind but I had a vision of what I wanted to do and he was cool with it. I did all the work to the car. I did the body work, paint, the majority of the interior, and the mechanical work. The only thing I needed done was the upholstery to the seats, door inserts, steering wheel, and all the chrome work. I did the dye on the stuff we couldn't wrap. I also did the suede. I made a custom one off body kit out of fiberglass. There was a lot of influence from some Japan cars that I took styling hues from but otherwise not a copy.
I took a lot of pics of my progress and I'll explain as I go along. I am a little picky and I pay attention to detail on the small things.
-Mercedes arctic white paint
-custom fender flares
http://www.vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27661&page=2
-custom made full body kit... front rear bumpers and side skirts (prototype)
-Aimgain trunk and roof spoilers
-JDM door visors
-DRL fogs that also signal amber as well.
-rear bumper integrated red led parking lights
-chrome door handle covers
-no badge grill
-led signal mirror covers
-custom exhaust tips...stock mufflers cut off
-chrome plated... door hinges, hood hinges, trunk hinges, radiator support and various bolts.
-red leather interior (perforated and solid), suede headliner and pillars, dyed panels, and dash to match
-neck pillows diamond pattern stiched
-JVC KW-AVX840 double din head unit with beatsonic stereo kit w/bezel
-tv headrest monitors, painted trim gloss black
-all wood grain and various plastic trim pieces painted gloss black
-K-loop rope
-Tein comfort sport suspension with universal air bags
-Leon Hardiritt 20x9.5, 10.5 +1, +0
One more thing. Thanks to my crew for lending a helping hand and support for this build and to make the cars first show a sucessful one. We took best VIP lexus and best interior. Not bad for an uncomplete car. The purpose of this car is to not be super different and fill it with accessories, but to be clean and simple and to take what you have and improving upon it.

after...

Check this out. the guage cluster trim is painted gloss black as well so the instrument lights reflect off of it.

All dash lights are red led's now. And I put a red film over the clock so it's not green.

On to the good stuff. Here are some of the progression pics and how I made the body kit. Keep in mind that this is not the final kit as it is just a plug for the new mold to be made. Which probably wont be made for a while cause I'm super busy. In the beginning all the work was done at my house outside. I took it to my work to paint the body and doors. Oh yea no paint booth either. I know I'm ghetto but who the hell cares. Paint is just a step. The refinishing is where it's at. You wouldn't even know unless I told you. Then sometime halfway through the build I moved and now I got a garage where I can do some work where I just about completed the project and painted the rest of it with my makeshift paint booth.
Pulled the dash...

Body work done and stripped...

front and rear windows out...

Prepped for paint...

Ok, here's how I made the front bumper...
[IMG]http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/6369/img4557m.jpg[/IMG]
Cut out what I didn't need...
[IMG]http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9394/img4560tt.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/341/img4562wp.jpg[/IMG]
Constructed a frame...
[IMG]http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/2264/img4580m.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/706/img4581g.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/4488/img4606a.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4432/img4614b.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8710/img4617f.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/6127/img4619re.jpg[/IMG]
The reason for the frame is to hold the clay. Which is what I used to shape and mold the shape of the design I want. I used Chavant Y2k automotive modeling clay. Just like how the pros use to make concept cars prior to final design. It's been done for years and is still done today. And it's how Japan designs all their expensive kits, like Aimgain and many more. Just look in the VIP mags.
Foam on the bottom to build up and hold the clay...
[IMG]http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/9421/img4622wm.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/9601/img4623g.jpg[/IMG]
On with the clay. Putting it on and shaping. You have to heat it up to put it on. And when it cools it gets hard. Outside temperature plays an important roll.
[IMG]http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/9176/img4628i.jpg[/IMG]
Clay is on shaped and smoothed. Not perfect by any means. As this is my first time using it.
[IMG]http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/3977/img4640xw.jpg[/IMG]
Ready for barrier coat. I used a waterborne primer. The clay has oils in it and you just cant use regular solvent primer cause it will react and mess it up.
[IMG]http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/9885/img4667c.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/7586/img4668q.jpg[/IMG]
View original BBCode
I used polyester putty to smooth out imperfections. Still not perfect.
[IMG]http://img851.imageshack.us/img851/6973/img4687i.jpg[/IMG]
Now I used an epoxy primer. This stuff gets hard vs. a regular primer surfacer...
[IMG]http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/5187/img4693u.jpg[/IMG]
All dry. Sand and buffed. Ready for mold release wax and mold release film...
[IMG]http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/2327/img4706hc.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/9476/img4701b.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8830/img4707c.jpg[/IMG]
With all that said and done. On to the mold making process. Black tooling gelcoat on top of the part you wanna copy...
[IMG]http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/3427/img4711l.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/356/img4720r.jpg[/IMG]
A few hours to dry and get tacky. Then chopped strand fiberglass mat with general purpose resin. I used about 4 layers. Not typically what you should do but this is a throw away one time use mold and I know I'm gonna make another one that I can possibly make multiple pieces so it doesn't matter.
[IMG]http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/4026/img4733y.jpg[/IMG]
Demolding from the clay plug. The original had to be destroyed in order to remove it. Also I had to cut the sides to remove it.
[IMG]http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/1453/img4737r.jpg[/IMG]
[IMG]http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/1150/img4739h.jpg[/IMG]
Here is a pic of the bumper mold and one of the side skirt molds that I'll get to later.

Here's a pic of the mold being used to make the new bumper. White gelcoat with chopped strand mat and general purpose resin.

Here's a pic of the new bumper off the mold on the car. It was not perfect to begin with and it needed some work. But once body worked and smoothed out the new mold should be perfect and I can pop out a near perfect piece with little to no body work required. Plus it wouldn't weigh like a tank.

Body work, primer...

Ok now the side skirt. This is the mold I made using some wood and spackle.

Again I used water bourne primer. But this time no epoxy primer. White gelcoat again fiberglass and general purpose resin.

Demold...

New piece...

Trimmed test fitted and molded to stock side skirts. This is a plug for a mold to be made. Not the final piece.

primered...

Well yea, that's how I made the body kit and painted the car.
Super sorry for the long crash course build thread. If anybody has any questions please ask away. Positive and Negative comments are welcome. This is not a tutorial. Just how I did things my way. Thanks for looking.
In time I will add to this cause there is still much to do to the car.
Amazing...... I can not get over you guys made your own kit and it came out perfect. Interior is popping, and the color choice and wheels are a thumbs up.
Glad to see this car is such classy fashion

Props on the serious workmanship you've put in, that is dedication! Hope to you see more of your works, very impressed!

EPIC.
True craftsman right here. That's what's up. Not only did you build this beast from scratch, but you did it with style. This 430 could sit next to any modern Japanese build and hold it's own. I like how you worked off the existing lines of the car like the more traditional (old school) kits, but used modern styling cues. Great work!
As for painting in open air on gravel... f**k that. LOL.
And then the interior... can't go wrong with red. I hate that you have to use paint to do it, but it looks so damn good. It reminds me of the black 30 Celsior from Japan that has a very similar interior (or did at one point). Some black burlwood dip would really set it off.
I'm gonna have to say that on a build level no one in the U.S. is f**king with this one. I can't wait to see what's next and hope that you put the same attention to detial in other areas of the car in the future. Well done sir.

I'm in construction. I service heavy equipment. I've been a mechanic and an automotive painter. Pretty much bumper to bumper service and repair. Been wrenching, modifying, and painting cars since the mid 90's. Even before that, before I was driving I was around cars. But now it's just more as a hobby tho.

Interior's are mostly overlooked, but I like how your's came out. Grea attention to detail, which is what I like.
This Build is awesome... Great work!!!

Sorry I've been busy getting ready for the Motion Long Beach show. But here is what we've done to the car in preparation for the show.
We wanted to touch up on a few details like the trunk, interior, and engine bay. And I only had a week to mess with that stuff. But we were able to make it and also take a trophy home.
A special thanks to Autofashion and John from VSC. Good times guys. It was a great first cali car show with the car. And it was just great hanging out with everyone. Congrats to Ojay and Miguel
So here is the work we did...
We wanted to do something simple and quick so we wouldn't have a stock trunk. We will end up doing some stereo stuff later in the future. But this will do for now.
Before.

The work in progress.

Fabric paint for the trunk lid.

Finished.

Painted some interior stuff and engine covers.

I saw this in person at Motion this weekend, and I'm not exaggerating in the least bit when I say that, in my opinion, this was the sickest and cleanest ride there. I stopped to gawk at this thing for so long. The attention to detail is just impeccable, and to make things even better, the kit is one off, hand made!!

Thanks guys. We won first place best VIP at Wekfest. There were so many good cars out there and it was cool hanging out with everyone. Got to meet and talk to a lot of people. What was super cool was I got to meet the owner of Central Pine from Japan. A straight up authentic VIP car builder from Japan giving me compliments on the car. Wow. I knew the guy was from Japan by the way he was crouching down looking at the car and the details. May not mean a lot to some people but come on, that's where the influence is from. We're just glad we could bring the car out to show everyone.
A special thanks to everyone at Autofashion for letting us represent with them.

I'm regretting I didn't get a picture with Mr. Matsumoto. A mutual friend of his from the US introduced me to him. And also sent me this link of one of the cars they built. Not my style but you gotta admire all the hard work and details put into it. It was cool watching him as I pointed out all the details on the car. He really likes all the chrome stuff we did. Each detail I showed him he was like... oohhh and nodded his head with a smile, then say something in Japanese. That was the highlight of the show for me other than getting a win over at Wekfest.

this car is just on another level. The build is just amazing and all from scratch, done in the garage. Truly inspirational to say the least. Congratulations on a beautiful car and all the success.

Thanks again guys. I have not posted anything in a long while because we've been busy messin with the car. I have some updates on what I have done to the car since my last post. Mostly small picky details. So here goes...
On the exterior we have added a front lip to the bumper. I used a 3/4" MDF wood. Originally I wanted to do a carbon fiber piece, and I actually did an overlay on the wood but did not use enough resin. And upon sanding it down I went to far and messed up some of the carbon fiber, so for a quick fix I decided to just wrap it in black vinyl. We're torn between black and carbon but it might remain gloss black. Going to redo of course. Want to do the same for the side skirts but don't know yet. Mode Parfume is the inspiration.

gloss black vinyl
And as you can see from the above pic we also did some led work to the headlights. I used prewired amber led's and they are just on for parking lights. Our signals are already integrated into the DRL fogs.

Sorry for the crappy phone pics.

This is how I layed out the led placement on a piece of aluminum and drilled the holes for the lights. The holes are drilled where the tape overlap eachother. I used a center punch to mark first. Just an eyball measurement.

Soldering and heat shrink.

Textured acrylic from home depot over the lights so they wont look so mechanical.

Also did the third brake light. Double row of prewired white led's. Still has the factory red lense in place.

Some polished stainless steel door sills with sticker.

I redid the side skirts as the old one's bugged me. They are now an inch taller and they do not bow in the middle like before. So when you look down the side of the car it looks straight. (That's my G50 in the back)

Now the interior got some attention too. We put up some jaguar tables in the back. Painted black and wrapped in red leather. Also made some custom tables out of glass for the front and rear. The goal of the look for the inside is modern vip. Still keeping the basics of traditional stying, but up to date. Also stepping away from the normal. Business luxury, business executive. The inspiration for this is Rolls Royce, Bentley, Mercedes, Jaguar. If you look at those cars interior you'll see what I'm talking about.
Rear center glass table. Tinted glass with black edge and painted black bottom. I used a 1 inch pipe and threaded flange bolted to the center floor, chrome plated. It can be unscrewed if needed.

The front and rear glass tables are our version of "VIP" tables. The front table is the same glass as the rear. It is permanently mounted with a custom bracket I welded up that screws to the dash. A part of the gloss black trim with the vent piece was cut so the bracket can fit. When looking down on the table it looks like it's floating. Just a simple mini table.

I integraded an Iphone Ipod dock in place of where the ashtray used to be as well as the air pressure guage for the bags. The dock is fully functional.

Also had some embroidery done to the front pillars of our logo.
Little brother big brother
Well, that's all I got for now. There is still much more left to do on the car. I will update when I can. Thanks for looking.

Wow, this car never ceases to amaze me! Great work!! Do you have the plans or a diagram of how you did the front (got it to stay, etc) and rear glass tables? I wouldn't mind doing something like that or maybe try the two layer with holders integrated. I have guys at work that might be able to pull something like that off. This thing is amazing, my inspiration. Speechless.

I have to chime back in on this. That red interior is every reason why I wanted to go red interior on my F50. Cause that is straight fire. The work is amazing!!
Side note: with all these projects going on, i feel left out, out of place. Need to step game up even more now :signdammit:

Whatever we couldn't wrap in leather is dyed (painted). There are some things that just could not be wrapped. We could of wrapped the dash and maybe some other things but leather, especially red leather, can be pretty expensive. For premium quality automotive grade leather at least. Color plays a big factor on price. I say if it looks like it can be wrapped then wrap it. And then dye what you can't wrap. If your doing a full color change.

^^^go for it. Hey I only got to meet you briefly but I'm glad I got to meet the man with one of the best looking Y33's stateside. Can't wait to see the new look. I know you won't dissapoint.
Once again...thanks for all the comments. I planned on doing some stuff to the car before the meet but I was super busy. Nothing major, just minor details to address. I did however raise the car a bit due to the new rubber band tires. It looked weird tucked, like there were no tires. So now it sits lip to fender with the help of 5mm spacers. It looks ok. Running 30 series instead of 35's.
Thanks Joey for the pics and coverage.
Damnitt I don't know why the pics don't show. Maybe cause I'm doing it from my phone. Oh well. Click the link.

^^^It was good talking to u and hanging out for a bit. Good times bro.
BigMone... I used DuPont products. Just ask your supplier. It's not really dye. That's just what it's called. It is bassically is a ready to spray paint special formulated to use on interior panels such as hard plastic interior pieces, the dash, vinyl, and other somewhat flexible stuff. I would not use it on the seats tho. Doesn't seem it would hold up. You would use a different product and procedure for that. Then again, I would just completely wrap the seat with material. That's just me.

Amazing build, especially that it's all from scratch and not just very expensive kits and plug and play. All respect to that.
I have to ask about the gauge cluster trim, the way how glossy it is, killing me, I love it.
I have been trying to do the same to my trim, but just can't seem to get resulting in such a mirror like finish and just glare back so glossy.
Any tips are much appreciated. Again, one sick mod man, props!
