cheez80's crap ass y33 build thread... chapter 2

i thought i'd start a new build thread because the car's undergoing some big changes in a few months.

so i've been really slacking on working on this car. i've just been driving it as-is, after fixing a wheel mishap that happened and some of you guys have seen me bring it out to meets.

i decided to sell my insurances (j.kuza on this board bought em) and ordered some BCs from OG -- i wanted to get a set of coils that had a shorter stroke with higher spring rates, so i'll be posting about those when i get them in.

i'm also in the process of working on the stitch evolutions i had on the car -- i will be rebarreling them to 19s. thinking of doing 19x10.5/11.5 stagger with 245/35 and 265/30 tires, but not dead set on that yet. any thoughts on wheel finishes or tire sizes?

i've also been thinking about doing a minor audio build in this car. i ordered a few things this week to get it started (not everything is in this photo):

it's going to be my pioneer z130bt as a source (with a 16gb ipod nano) > audison bitone (primarily for crossover duties and for the cool DRC volume control knob -- the amps don't have crossover sections of their own and the up/down volume switch on the z130bt is annoying as fuck) > 2x pioneer prs-d800 class d amps > 2x pioneer ts-sw841d 8" slim subs on the rear deck / old, circa 2008 pioneer premier 720prs components in the doors ran passively.

there's no progress so far, but i thought i'd start this thread to start documenting the build again. the car looks like this right now:

my car also started leaking from the valve cover gaskets (i'm assuming from when it was sitting for like 6 months) so i'm going to have to get that fixed too, FML. already have the parts ordered (thanks malik!).

I personally would rather to continue to see this slammed on 18's but either route you take I am sure will be jaw dropping.

no, keeping it. i like it better than any of the other ones i've had so far (alpine, kenwood, older pioneer, jesus i've been through a ton of HUs in this car)

more progress today -- i just ordered another PRS-D800, so now i'll have 3. one for tweets, one for midbass, and one for subs. this is going to be awesome haha

you like it? that new is-f steez LOL. what happened was i guess the original weld was too hot and weakened the piping -- the hanger is still attached to a piece of the piping and now there's like an 1" hole in the top of the piping haha.

now that you mentioned it, i want to redo the exhaust too. not sure how though.

It takes that cheez to have 2 builds at once...cant wait to see what becomes of this one...again

ok, third PRS-D800 got in today. got a tracking number on the bitone (should be here on tuesday) and received one of two scosche fused distro blocks today (i bought 2 at the same time from amazon but one came from AZ and the other from KY. FML). other one is here tomorrow. progress! gonna start laying cable this weekend, if i can get to it haha

on another note, this fucking sears diehard platinum is dead. tried charging it with a battery charger and all it does is tell me the battery's full, but the lights in the car won't even turn on. FML. might have to spring for a new battery because it looks like i lost the receipt for this one. sigh.

my bitone is being shown as delivered according to UPS. i'm dropping off my battery at sears tonight to see what's up with it. hopefully i'll have some progress soon...

FUCK the battery was dead and i was 20 days past the 4 year free replacement period on the diehard platinum i had. paid $120-ish for a new one (they did credit back about half the purchase price of the new one). at least i'll have a brand new battery to use once the car is running again.

ok, bc's got in last night (they shipped them via fedex air from taiwan. cool), but my stitches are in the process of being taken apart and... modified... somehow... and all the parts are backordered 4-6 weeks LOL FML

so i'm waiting on my homie to finish a set of VS-XX that i'm going to run temporarily, so i won't be able to take the car off jackstands until i get wheels. FML FML FML. in the meantime, i'm going to put the coilovers in and do some maintenance work to the car (valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, etc). will keep this thread updated when i have progress!

i ordered them from mike at original garage -- he's one of the forum sponsors

oh good...yeah the original orders from Megan and BC were too small of an opening for the brake caliper brackets.  needed to open up from 12mm to 14mm.   I had to send it to a machinist because doing it at home was not happening.   OG said the new batches are now 14mm...  I'm sure you probably got the updated version.  Lucky you.    I also noticed on my Algernon the previous owner opened it up too.

i wanted something with support -- i can order new shock cartridges from BC for cheap, for example. not many people want to touch the insurances, and insurance is in japan... haha. it was cheaper to sell the insurances and cop BCs rather than revalve and respring the insurances

the BCs i ordered (s13 length, i think) are way too long in the front -- i'm going to see if a shorter spring lets me get lower. the shock looks short already but the front spindle setup adds like 4" to the height of the front suspension so you'll have to compensate with a shorter spring/shock setup. i'm looking into a 120mm H&R spring.

next steps are to see how low it gets out of the box (there's maybe 1.5" between the bottom of the spring collar and the top of the lower mount right now) and if that's not enough, put on the H&Rs. more progress next weekend...

Yea figured service would be the reasoning.

Excited to see how low the BCs go as it's been my primary concern with ordering them.

i managed to find some time to lower the front -- this is what they look like without any collars removed but with everything as low as possible. it looks maybe 0.75"-1" higher than it was before? i'm going to buy some shorter springs in the next few days and see if i can get it any lower -- the factory BC springs (62mm ID, 20 kg/mm, 180mm length) are simply too long.

good catch, all the barrels are backordered 4-8 weeks so i put these wheels back together so i can still drive the car while i'm waiting

i recommend you don't go over board on the short spring idea. is there even 60mm of thread above the lower spring perch? i have come to realize that bc is doing these front springs 20mm too long (probably less but keeping with standardized sizing), but going -60mm will not change the fact that when the collars bind you are very close to bottoming the damper out in the bracket. if you want to check how much is left you can preload the spring to make room to bottom it out. this won't give you an accurate ride height but it will allow you to see how much is left before they bottom out. i predict a 160 spring will give you everything they got, 140 since i predict you going to -80mm dampers.

ah, so how far i can go into the lower mount is the measurement you need? i don't know if i'll have the time to pull it apart this weekend but we'll figure it out

i looked at a weld in mount i have and don't think that's as good an option as originally thought. the area between the threads and the endlink mount is non-existent and that's where you would want to cut.

It wouln't effect structural integrity to weld on the shock tube, however I would fully disassemble the shock and drain the fluid before welding to it (just my opinion, may not be necessary). 

Also, I ran no front sway bar on a Y33 for a few months, if you don't drive aggressive, you honestly don't notice it.

if welded properly it should be fine. for the sway bar a shorter endlink would probably work. i'm willing to bet that a maxima/altima adjustable piece would work.

understand though that cutting is a very extreme mod for minimal results. the only thing it will accomplish is allow you to completely bottom out the strut without binding the locking rings. the same thing could be accomplished with a simple spring swap. as long as the cartridge length remains the same the minimum height is unchanged.

 there's some margin for error so i think as long as the cuts were fairly square i think you'd be fine without inserting the cartridge during welding.

Finally, some fucking progress. Got a pair of shorter Swift springs from Pavel a while ago but finally got around to installing them today. The car is almost back to its old ride height (the rear looks to be a smudge higher than it was) and I'm pretty damn happy about that. 235/35 10.5 and 255/35 12 - In my experience the 265/30 didnt have enough side wall for the amount of camber i was running.  I ended up loosing the bead twice on an 11.5 because i lost some tire pressure and couldnt visually tell that i was running low.

i finally drove the car today for the first time in what feels like 5-6 weeks. threw the OEMs on the rear, it looks awkward as fuck at the moment LOL

the rear stitches were taken off and sent out for rebarreling -- i'm still waiting on another 2 outer lips i need for the other pair. sigh.

i'm getting a pair of 17" tires from a friend tomorrow so i'm going to limp the car down to 714 tires, get the new tires mounted on this old ass set of impul silhouettes i have, then align the car to get rid of the rear camber so those new 17" tires last longer than 2 days.

we were only able to reduce the neg camber to -6* or so, from -9*, because we were scared the arm adjustment wasn't going to have enough thread. going to be driving the car like this for the next few months. hopefully these blacklion tires last :P

When I first saw your front coilovers, I thought they looked tall as fuck for S13, are you sure they're not S14? I feel like my S13 fronts are almost half that size. Not from BC of course. I originally had S14 coilovers but they didnt go nearly as low as I wanted, so i took apart the bodies and put S13 front strut bodies in the S14 coils, and got way lower.

he's running y33 bc coils. s chassis coils don't have the spindle integrated.

That's weird s13 and s14 share the same front coilovers except for the hole size on the bolt that connect it to the spindle.

yeah, like OG said i'm running y33 coils. i had a set of s13 zeals -- is that what you're talking about? i don't know if those are short or tall for s13 coils -- i haven't owned another set of s13 coils to compare.
