y33 Q45 wide fenders and rebuild

I've posted a thread in the Vip 101 section asking questions about camber arms for my 98 Q45 y33 and since I've gotten a lot of attention from it, I decided to start a build thread. Keep in mind that I plan to do majority of the custom bodywork myself and occasionally get help from a few friends only when I run into issues with certain tools such as welders. With that being said, I'm assuming this is gonna be a long and slow process and I hope to keep this thread updated as i progress. I ordered a polyeurethane front lip for a Lexus is350 because it had the closest shape that I want to achieve for my front bumper, I realized that polyurethane wont properly fuse to fiberglass so I decided to use it as a mould and create a fiberglass replica of it. Keep in mind that I've never done anything like this and that the only glass work I've done was simple repairs. It was an interesting experience and also wasn't as easy as I thought I would have been.

Yes. The VS bumper is too subtle for me so I'm making adjustments to it. Gonna shave the lisence plate notch and remove that vertical line thats right in the middle cause it's been bothering me. I'm also gonna make major adjustments to the rear bumper, possibly a diffuser and bumper brake light strips.

zccjdm.com which special orders from japan. They require a pretty minor  wait and come in various sizes that fit your needs, $300+ a pair.

I dont have the cajones to do arch work without any welding experience, sub'd for a promising build.

With the door, my plans are to trim the flare to match the door line and weld metal to the openings. This isn't an easy task and I'm familiar with metal fab work, but I want to be involved as much as possible since I like things done a certain way. I believe there's going to be roughly 3+ inches from original panel to the end of the metal flare.

Thanks dude, the lip isn't gonna be that drastic and once it's painted then the normal person prob won't be able to tell the difference. I'm just a fan of the old style VIP look, the style that had a pretty good sized chin to the bumpers and that's what I'm trying to achieve yet not too agressive as the junction produce ones were.

You read that correctly that's 8inches of straight lip btw and 19x10 -30 for the fronts lol. funny thing is that people mainly try to fit -30 in the rears and I'm being pretty agressive by attempting more than double that. We'll see how this goes.

I appreciate all the motivation from you all and hopefully I can inspire a few guys to attempt some of the things that they may be afraid to do such as the many things that Japan has already conquered. 33flavors already set a pretty high bar here in the states with his Q that I can only try  to reach that point someday. Lets keep in mind that I am definitely not rich so money will be pretty tight during the process of the build. I'm mainly in this for the experience and the journey of learning new things and also to renew my passion of love for this car.

Nice i can't wait til you start the rears. But for your fronts should fit like a charm. I'm running 18x10 -33 fronts on my G50.

This car is so stinking clean; I love how your doin your own work too. Big thumbs up.

Time for an update on my build. Lately my schedule to work on my car has been pretty hectic, but i managed to install the driver side fender. Here are the update pics. Keep in mind that the welds aren't complete for the inner door and should be done soon along with the other side.

I tried pulling the fenders as much as i could for s**ts and giggles to see how much i could get out of it before the fender started warping that's why it looks messed up. If I went that route I would have needed some crazy Oni camber since i managed to get approximately 2 inches before it started to warp FYI.

Sealed the gap inside the door with some shaped sheet metal. Didn't get to take a pic of it completely welded. Aslo test fitted my wheels at this point.

This set is actually the special limited ones that were advertised with the 200mm lips. The same ones that are on display at the shows and some shops that rarely anyone is daring enought to purchase and attempt to fit. Straight from Japan that even they were surprised that anyone from America even ordered it. Haha

Yes sir, cutting a slit into the bumper and adding fiberglass to make it flow. Metal to fiberglass is a no no. Lol

There's no real need for plastic welding since my rear bumper is already fiberglass, so fiberglass would be the easiest and best route IMO.

Lately I've definitely been slacking on my build, but for all that subscribed I hope this helps feed the interest. With all of this slacking I've been doing I'm missing the show that I wanted to debut this car at which is Spocom Hawaii. In any case, I basically started working on my front bumper by making some major adjustments to set it apart from the many people who own the same kit. I figured I'm already at the point where I might as well do everything that I always wanted to try before I bring it in for paint. The first thing I did was remove the bumper and make some measurements on where I wanted to cut and kinda figure out what I wanted to end up with. I've never done anything drastic like this so it was all new to me and luckily didn't take much trial and errors.

I decided to use the tape as a reference line of how much I wanted to cut and since I wanted to retain the small body line it took a little bit of measuring and pondering before the actual cutting. This is where the Lip I molded earlier comes into play which I cut in half so it would be easier to work with.

After enough measuring and pondering on how I was going to attempt this I decided to just get into it and start cutting. You can imagine how hard it was to make that first cut since the bumper was perfectly fine and in nearly perfect condition. haha. You gotta pay to play!

To get it to this point took a lot of figuring out and trying different techniques since the form that the lip came from was originally for a Lexus is350 and I'm trying to graft it onto an aftermarket y33 Cima kit. It took a lot of cutting certain points to make it flex properly and a few zip ties did the trick to temporarily hold it in place for the time being.

As she temporarily sits for now until this weekend since I purchased more resin and matting. Don't mind the uncut zip ties, I actually like this raw look for now since it's very temporary and I'll consider it as my ugly duckling stage. lol. Also, this isn't the only adjustment I'm making to this bumper, I wanted to start with the lip for structure and stability, but plan on messing with the center vent section with possibly a different style fog lamp because the Cima fogs are starting to get old and it looks too outdated IMO. Sorry, I dont quite understand your question dude, but from what I think you're asking for I'm aiming for complete pieces that are removable. I'm not really into the whole molding idea strictly because I want to be able to have the option to easily remove something and make changes later on. I hope that answers your question

What I meant was were you going to make a mold of the whole modified bumper and then using that make the actual bumper to use on your car instead of that one you're now modding... then you can store the original piece and mold, and if you fuck up one bumper just make a new one with the said mold.

That makes total sense now haha sorry for the confusion. Actually since storage space is limited, this is going to be my only bumper. I'm putting so much work into it by myself that the thought of the whole mould and replica process makes me cringe of how much time and energy it's going to take. I do like the idea though and if I weren't doing this on my own and with the right equipment, I would actually consider doing that.

Well actually the process is quite simple and doesn't need any additional equipment, and for an average joe shouldn't take any more than a few days of work :shrug:

My bad for not updating this thread as often as I should and as most of  the guys already stated, most of the recent updates go directly to  instagram since it's so damn easy to use. lol. I'm actually not sure  where to start with this update since a lot has gotten done since the  last time I posted on here. Keep in mind that all of the bodywork is  done by me and is completely hand crafted as well as hand sanded. The  hand sanding was a stupid idea on my part since i refused to purchase a  electric disc sander, which in hind sight would have been a quicker,  more ideal way of doing it.

I guess we'll pick up where I left  off which was the front bumper. I had to redo this damn thing a few  times since the fiberglass resin left some major air bubbles that needed  to be grinded down and filled in, but here it is through the stages and also all primed up and done.

Rear Bumper:

The rear bumper had a lot of modification done to it in order to allow it to flow with the wide body fender flares as well as full customizing the addition of the AMG rear carbon diffuser. I actually did the rear bumper where it flows to the fender two different ways since i hated how it look at the first attempt. The rear diffuser needed major modifications in order for it to look right as well. Both were a pain in the ass and a lot of fiberglass matting and resin/ fiberglass body filler/ and standard body filler was used to accomplish this creation. Lets not forget the many trial and error's that it took just to create what seems to be easy modifications which felt crazy long and wasn't so easy.

Agressive as in what terms? The wheels were purchased off of a friend who could not fit them onto his 350z without extensive bodywork, and since I loved them that much I decided to attempt to fit them on my Q45. Haha if camber is what you're looking for then that will be taken care of pretty soon once I'm done with the bodywork. The fronts are 5 inches of lip btw at on a 10 inch wheel -30 offset as if that wasn't already agressive tto start with.

I appreciate the attention the build is getting and I'll try to update this as often as I can.

more agressive fronts as in better matching from front to rear. 10 -30 is agressive, but you're still talking ~2.5" of additional poke in the rear vs. the traditional .5" stagger. that's why you have a small pull in the front, decent sized flare in the back, and are still going to need uneven camber to have good fitment. we've all seen cars with this approach, and i think the consensus is that it looks disproportianate when complete.

i don't know why leon didn't offer a complimentary stagger size like a 187mm lip. there's a huge gap between the normal line and the deep lip line so you pretty much have to run square if you want it to be proportionate.

Fair enough. Thanks for your input and I agree that the fronts need slightly more poke to match the rears, but hopefully I can figure out a solution to get the stance pretty on point and even. Had I not purchased the wheels from a friend, I probably wouldn't have done such crazy work on the fenders, but the journey was pretty interesting and definitely gave me a whole new outlook on cutom work. The experience and learning was definitely intense and worth more than the outcome IMO.

like i said, props for getting your hands dirty. i went through a similar learning experience with fg so i understand exactly what you mean about the experience. one thing i would recommend to you and anyone else that doesn't already know is get your suspension dialed in first. get the wheels to sit how you want them, then build around them. the results will always be better than doing the bodywork then making the wheels line up.

I agree, you have to have your suspension in place and the preferred ride height and camber.  I get the concept of working from stock maximizing the body work 1st and then fine tuning it with camber but the missing part is you don't know those angles until you have seen them. why do all that great work and then fall short on execution?  I commend you for thinking out the box and going big.  I love the direction but its those minor details that makes a good build to a great build.  I wouldn't do anything else until you have your suspension dialed in -10 degrees is going to change a lot more than just the camber. why guess it?

Basically what OG said, I'd match the flares evenly. Like if I were in your position, I'd be relipping those fronts to 11 -42 or 11.5 -48 and flaring the extra inch to inch and a half to match the aggressiveness of the rear.

But, your build and I love what you're doing with it either way and you couldn't have picked a better wheel option with the ordens! They're so uncommon with Topanga lips that it takes this much work to make them look ultimately bad ass.

I plan to get the suspension figured out before I even bring it in for paint. All in all, I'm in this to just build it for the love, experience and to make a few friends on the way. I'm not trying to be the baddest nor do I care about any of the fame, although it is nice to be noticed for all the work I put into it. I only spend my spare money on two things, and thats food and then my car. I'm barely getting by with this build and I spend money when I have some to spare comfortably. I don't consider myself anyone special and I'm far from rich, but the style itself I'm completely in love with, the new friends and contacts I've grown to know both in real life as well as on the net, as well as the car I'm working with thats making this build all worth it. Thank you all for the guidance and hopefully I can get this build done soon.

Just a thought, you could run some bolt on spacers to get it looking more aggressive in the front

I would not go more than a 10.5 - the 10 would be more ideal if anything just deeper offsets - my fronts are 10.5 -30 something - if you ever consider going bags a 11 maybe 2 big

No plans on re-barreling anytime soon bro, I'm just gonna work with that I have already and stick with it. Main concern is suspension and getting it to sit right and as even as possible without breaking the bank. There are a lot of things that I would love to do, but with the budget I'm working with, it will have to wait until next time if any. Thanks for your help and input bro.

Btw bags are a must for me especially living in Waikiki where there's steep ramps galore and road construction is never ending with the shady pothole patches and steel plates. I'm thinking of ditching my airrunners setup and going UAS which allows more adjustability and customization to work with.

Thank you bro! Guys like you that keep me motivated to keep doing what I  do. Getting dirty and hands-on isn't for everybody, but its definitely  nice to see people try something new and being really involved in a  build. I like hearing input on what needs work, but when it comes down  to it, it really comes down to what works for me and what I'm capable of  doing with ability and or money. Things can always be changed around  with both time and money, but learning new tricks and insight on how  it's done is pretty damn good too.
