The Official Y33 Suspension/brakes/kits/discussion/theory/and everything else thread

I figure with the sudden burst of y33's popping up on our wonderful forum and how common they are getting its time for this sort of thread. Im tired of reading countless dumb questions that could easily be searched for, but apparently people need to be spoon fed answers so lets get that accomplished as well as having a thread of what arms work, what brakes work, peoples various wheel setups, common issues, your current issues, how to achieve more camber, or whatever else we can think of. trying to make this the y33 one stop shop. i know the 101 section has the body kit list and there is countless other links on here of good info. So if your willing i will be willing to update this first page with all the useful info while we can use it mainly for discussion. whatever useful info you can post i will throw it up here.

for the interchangeable arms do you need the s13/s14 set up? or will they work with the y33 right off the bat?

DIY S14/S14 on your Y33 conversion

First you need to get the parts

Either obtain ALL s13 or ALL s14 makes life easy
1. LCA
2. Knuckle
3.5lug front hub
4. Coil over
5. Aftermarket S13/14/15/z32 are all the same and fit outer tie rods (ill explain why later)
6. Aftermarket tension rods (might as well right?) S14 work on this instance, I’m sure 13 would as well since they are adjustable. S14 is longer than 13
7. Y33 top hats
ALL BOLT SIZES ARE FROM MY HEAD, IE MIGHT NOT BE ACCURATE

Ok, the ONLY downside is the sway bar
I disconnected mine because I didn’t have time
But what ill end up doing is drill a hole through it, and using an s13 sway bar mount bolted directly to it. It won’t be at the exact same mounting points, but I will work.

Okokokokok
I’ll get to the actual conversion
1. Remove your brakes from the knuckles, and put them aside somewhere (zip tie helps to hold it up).
2. Remove the sway bar vertical bracket, its an internally wrenching bolt, so you need to hold it with an Allen head, then use a 14mm wrench to remove the nut, slide the brace out, and do the same for the bottom, but it’s a 17mm I believe.
3. Remove the tension rod bolts to the LCA. Bottom are 14mm, top are Allen (on my application I had tension rods already)
4. Loosen the LCA bolt to the sub frame, 19mm on both sides. Take the nut off, leave the bolt to support it.
5. Take off the upper suspension top hat nuts, and let it drop. Be sure to hold it so it doesn’t smack you in the nuts like it did me the first time.
6. Smack out that LCA bolt and BAM its out. Throw it to the side.
7. Put the Y33 top hats on your new coilovers.

OK for installation you need to pay attention to a few things.
1. Make sure your new coilovers have appropriate springs. When I order my new coilovers soon I’m going with a 12/10 so when I put airbags on it, it will be valved correctly for the stiffness I want. Everyone will be different.
2. Install the hub on the knuckle, and the new tie rod ends onto the tie rod.
3. READ THIS PART******************************
If YOU DO NOT HAVE THE AFTERMARKET TIE ROD ENDS YOU WILL HAVE TO BORE OUT THE BUSHING THAT THE TIEROD SHOULD GO INTO. I DON’T HAVE A MEASUREMENT, I COMPLETELY FORGOT TO WRITE IT DOWN, BUT JUST DREMEL, AND TEST FIT…OVER AND OVER.
4. install from reverse
5. I recommend LCA first, then tension rod, then tie rod end, and then install the shock to the body, then the knuckle to the shock.
6. Install your old brake rotor, and caliper, and put on your wheel after you double check and make sure everything is tightened.

Now would be a good time to do a brake upgrade if you want to. I put on GTR calipers with R33 brake rotors. Bolts directly up using the lines that came on the brakes on the gtr.

Other than that, it’s fairly straightforward. If you’re not doing hella aggressive driving don’t even worry about the Sway bar in the front. Only reason I am is because I want to track my car next year, so I need it. Also, if you don’t get ABS hubs, you won’t have it. I got NON ABS hubs, because I HATE abs. I don’t like electronics getting in my way of the feel of the road.

Regardless ill go with a few meters

DIFFICULTY-7 mainly because of the common sense needed that a lot of people don’t have. You may have to source hardware if you don’t have it for things like the coilovers mounting on the knuckle. Also if you change your brakes you have to know how to bleed them etc etc.
TIME- It shouldn’t take you more than 4 hours from start to finish
It took me 3, and I changed my brakes, bled the entire system, put trust brake fluid in and rebled the whole system, and then installed everything, forgot to change out the springs, dropped the strut to change springs, then the tie rod end didn’t fit so I had to bore it out etc ect.
So even if your dumb it shouldn’t take more than 4 hours.

Now get out there and do it!

[h=2]Cheez80's thread
http://www.vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?22922-y33-increasing-front-camber-on-maxed-out-camber-plates[/h]
Couple of ways you can do this...

A. If you were to convert your front suspension setup to a S14 setup, meaning S14 knuckles, hubs, coilovers/tophat, outter tie rod, and aftermarket front LCA, you'd be able to get more camber out of it. But if you go this route, you'll loose your front sway bar since Y33 front sway bars mount to the shock assembly. But you'll be able to get your camber needs.

OR...

B. Get aftermarket S14 Front LCA, which looks like this
Forum image

and you'll have to get new shank that'll fit the Y33 knuckles because S14 and Y33 ball joints are very different and will not work.

C. Modify your LCA or S14 LCA since they are very simular in length and size. the part that needs to me modified is the inner side of the LCA that bolts up to the front engine cross member. you'll need to have it cut and welded and put on a heim joint on the inner side so that you'll be able to push out the Front LCA put further, giving you more camber.
and that'll look simular to this when it's done.

Forum image
*The gray one is the LCA, this particular picture is from a AE86 Corolla

So...option D would be, don't worry about it.
^ To add to that if going that route:

1-S14 Rear top hats work(Save some bucks)

2-Aftermarket S13 specific outers will not work(10mm thread). OEM Q or aftermarket S chassis inners are 12mm so require the matching outers. Also Tein outers will not work as they are too long and you cannot adjust your toe enough b/c you run out of thread. I am using CS outers and Tein inners w/PBM spacers on both, perfect lenth and adjustablility.

3-I mocked up an s13 and s14 sway bar and they were not long enough to reach the flcas, so I dont know what he's talking about there, I don't understand what changing just the mounts will do but I didn't try that and who knows maybe it'll make sense, i'll update when I have tried.

4-If wanting to retain OEM brakes like myself you will need to take your s-chassis spindles to machine shop and have them bored to 9/16's doing this by hand is possible but not encouraged.

this is an open question to anyone who has done the z32 brake swap.....I have calipers however they do not line up with my y33 caliper brackets, This may be rhetorical, but should i be using the z32 calipers?

I have a brake setup for sale. Yes I'm jacking this thread because its relevant to anyone that's looking to do this upgrade.

R32 GTST 4 pot 2 pot
4pot is on a 350z track rotor
2 pot is on a q45 rotor
All rotors are drilled and slotted 13k on the rotors and pads.

Lines

shorter spring alone will not provide additional drop if the coilover is set up correctly, unless the spring is keeping you from bottoming out the lower bracket. shorter dampers are the correct way, which may require shorter springs as well.

If it were me, I would get the BC racing instead of the Megan, they go lower. And yes, they bolt right on, then all that's needed is an alignment.

the y33 install is one of the more involved ones, but you can tackle it on jackstands with hand tools.

Truth. I have a lift, and power tools, and i'm doing it with jackstands and hand tools, its honestly kinda faster, and you only need 2 sizes of sockets.
Did you get all three rear S14 arms for each side?

the main reason most people replace them is to get rid of the bushings. the compliance of the rubber can cause geometry changes. on lowered cars they can also be used to remedy wheel well clearance issues by recentering the wheel.

No, I cant see why.

Good info, but I'm curious about ride height. So who offers the best drop so far?

For anyone with a 99-01 that has done the 97-98 trunk swap, do you just need the trunk itself? Does it bolt onto the 99+ hinges? Is it a direct swap for the most part? I'm assuming I'm gonna have to do the wiring myslef which shouldnt be hard. I just want to make sure I get all the pieces from the donor car that I need.

Ok so I noticed the other night that my headlights no longer stay turned on after I shut the car off (idk what this feature is called exactly). I haven't changed any bulbs or anything recently so I don't know why it stopped working all of a sudden. I checked all my fuses already and they were all good, so I was curious if anyone has had any experience with this problem and can maybe point me in the right direction.

Its basically a nut and bolt. the bolt side is facing the rear of the car with the notched washer. the other side has the nut so loosen that.

Does any body know the bolt sizes for 98 Q45 Rear upper control arm, Toe rod, and traction rod?
I am replacing my arms and have to cut them out due to rust. I want to buy the bolts before I cut them to make install quicker.
If not I can just take the bolts to Lowes/Advance and just match em up.

I need to replace my inner and outer tie rods. I'm stock suspension otherwise and will be ordering my PBM coils when I get back into town. I can just use S13 or S14 inners and outers right?

There are companied that sell y33 coils now including PBM. Some require no cutting/welding just direct bolt on.
When I lowered my car y33 coils were hard to come by. I ordered
- PBM s14 coilovers
- s14 front spindle
- made custom camber plates to fit the coils and my car (s14 camber plates will not work)
- s14 inner and outer tie rods
- s14 front lower ball joints
- brake caliper bolts will need to be drilled to 12mm (iirc)
- s14 rear coils are direct bolt on

JIC, Megan, And BC are direct bolt on's right? I not worried about the welding, as I build race cars for a living. What I'm wondering about is if S14 inner and outer tie rods will fit the Q45 spindle.

I don't think the tie rods fit. I had to replace my rack and pinion before I lowered my car and I already had s14 inner/outer tie rod and the tech told me that the outers didn't fit. He didn't know they were from a different car, I had to buy y33 outer tie rods. I swapped to s14 tie rod end when I swapped to s14 spindle.

Talking about toe arms (the rear most lateral link) or caster arms (the forward most link)

The whole rear multi link fits from S14. S13 work as well, but the S13 uses a lot smaller bushings so you'd actually have to shim them to make them fit. Better off using the S14 arms.

But in short yea, Traction, Toe and RUCA from S14 all swap directly into the Y33 rear.

Lower control arms are kind of advanced level stuff -- if you're just going for a mild setup, I'd suspect coilovers with front camber plates, rear upper control arms, and rear toe rods will be enough. That should get you up to -4* camber up front and maybe -6.5-8 depending on which RUCAs you buy.

If you absolutely must have adjustable LCAs (I can't imagine why, unless your wheels are sized very conservatively and you want to make them fit better), in front you'd ideally have adjustable tension rods. Out rear I'd suggest the traction link too.
Got a question for you guys. I am looking to purchase BC coilovers for my 99' Y33, I was wondering what other suspension components would be >>Needed<< for a mildly aggressive setup. I am on a budget like some of you. So far I am looking to replace the upper and lower control arms. Info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
carry on, good sir. not very many people have tried that here in the US yet, but 326, nagisa, t-demand all make RLCAs for our cars if you want something that's known to work. good luck, and when you figure it out, let us know what you did!

So discussing with some members, turns out that 350Z factory Brembos will bolt right up to the Q. Furthermore they for behind factory 17's in my case. I'll be ordering a new set of brakes from Infiniti. Perks of employee pricing.

yes, my endless brakes for z33 bolted right up. i didn't have a chance to see whether the brake hose is the same on the inlet side, though

Lines shouldn't be an issue as any brake upgrade should have hardlines. I'm not a fan of rubber.
