Others having same kit/wheels as you - Your Thoughts

Here in houston vipstyle is almost non-existant. That being so, in my situation if i buy a certain set of wheels or kit and someone else would possibly get it before or after you... would you bother getting it at all? It would really stick out as compared to 100 civics having a Mugen Lip

Knowing that someone will have the same kit as you even though you want it. Would that deter you from going ahead with it?

Imo i would HATE to have the same kit and same car or same wheels with same car as someone else here going for the vip style. 

What are your thoughts? Get what you really want and have a twin in the same town or just get something else to be different?

I think, its get what you want.  Throw your own flair into it.  Hell, I built my car after a car in Japan basically.  

For me, its inevitable, but its a good thing.  I don't mind if my neighbor built the exact car.  I would only be annoyed if I did full custom one off body work and color.  Stuff that you can buy from a company, its ok

Do it, then when someoene bites your style, sell it (because by then it will be a 'popular kit' and buy somethign new :)

Aero or wheels doesnt make the car your style

What you do to enhance those does.
theres only like 3 or 4 aero kits for my car, so its going to be inevitable that it will happen.
Its what you do to the rest of the car that gives it character and flair to make you like it!

Kindof a downer, but I agree it's the details that count.
Still, same kit and wheels is a bit more than coincidence, I think it's kinda lame

basically whats happening is two other people in my area with the same car saw a group buy on CL and now they both want to be locked in. Me knowing that there will be at least one twin of mine in the same city and i will probably bump into him makes me wanna forget it all together

well, if the car's truly a reflection of your personal taste and style, then it really shouldn't matter.

however, if you're getting some things here because they're the right price, and some things here because someone cut you a great deal, and you get in on a group buy... and you kinda sorta like the style but it's not really you, it seems inevitable that someone else will end up with the same parts.

so in the end, if the car's all you, then it really shouldn't matter.  but if the car was just kinda put together here and there with price the limiting factor, then it should be expected.

I am trying extremely hard to stay away from anything else ive seen. there are three identical vip styled ls400s in cali (LA area) and they had no problem copying each other.. and I want to be completley different from everyone else.  Luckily for me there is a vast selection of kits and wheels available for my car so its easy to find something I love that reflects me. :)

I'll have no problem being unique. But if I was going the standard budget tuner way, I'd probably end up looking like someone else's Protege, there are only 3 bodykits and 1 JDM bumper and lip kit.

Depends. They could do a bad install job or if you had yours first and then a few months later they say they were first.

Little things could set you off from someone else with some of the same parts.

Imitation is the best form of flattery.  If someone wants to copy me, itd be VERY hard, but Id feel good in knowing someone would want to imitate mine because they like it so much.   The chances theyll build their own front lip, get another set of Euroline Ns in my size, and have my custom paint scheme is not likely, but I think I would feel good in knowing it' so liked.

i hate it, which is why i pick parts that noone has or is willing to get.. i can be different and still make my car look hot :)

I really don't care. Sure it would be a little wierd...but oh well. I will probably be out of the VIP scene before it turns into the same whore that drifting has turned into. I would be offended if someone with a fake replica kit and cheap wheels was trying to say that his car is identical or better than mine...that would get me a little pissed.

Little details on exterior makes a car different. if you change little things like side mirrors, the turn lenses (either shave it or make it clear), fancy little badges(aimgain, fabulous etc etc)that makes it look like factory, tint, chrome mouldings around the bumpers, door handles, grille, foglamps etc etc. 

Maybe spent a little more $$$ to enhance the fg work on the aero to make it more exotic looking....just an idea.

i think that makes a car a bit different from others. uniqueness is the key.

I personally hate it if someone has the same stuff as I do. I especially hate it when someone copies me. I like to be original/unique, always with anything.

I don't mind it because everyone is going to have their own flare with their car which should easily make them different from eachother.  I just hope that nobody makes a replica of my Spirits kit, I don't want it to become like the fabulous xb body kit which is sold everywhere.  Then I would be mad because everybody would have the same kit as me and I went the extra mile and saved my money and bought a kit that only 1 known person had.

I felt that my flare was more vipstyle'd compared to the other 2 people that have the kit now.

I don't think you should worry as, your execution will be far superior and even though you may have similar parts your car will be way better looking, and more true to VIP style.  I dont worry about that as much, since I have a F50 and almost no one in Houston mods them. Also you can always wait for them to rock that combo, and then flip mode it on them by buying a new set of wheels kit etc. in a combo that they don't even know exists.  Or just buy parts that are $$$$ out of most peoples league.

What size of wheels are those? 15"?

this is the reason I go custom, it helps being able to do it yourself. Just sucks my new job has kept me from continueing. I seen your car at Import Face-Off, very nice. I actually went home to check out Autotrader.com for VIPable rides.

well as soon as you get something different people see it and want the same. but with a nice combo of kit and wheels you would be good. i have some hard to find goodies for my ride.

I don't have that problem of people copying me. What's done has already been done somehwere. If you thought of it now and don't have the funds to do it, then someone has thought of it too AND has the funds to do it.

I would expect a knockoff eventually of the Spirits kit since that blue xB has it. Seems like the car to build a knockoff since the rims are knockoffs. Why stop there?

There was an F50 around here with some ugly 20's that my car got confused with when I had my Giovanna's on.  It would bother me when people asked me if I bought his car from him :eek:

maybe try to go custom or partially custom..
look for some nice looking bumpers and make them fit your car , or remodel the bumper taht's on now.
you can get the exact look you want , hight you want , so it rules in so many ways
and you almost certain you won't see it on you neighbours civic lol :)
it's a bit more effort but it meets your standarts of one of a kond perfectly :0

I like Richard's suggestion. You see this all the time in Japan when certain kits become very popular. One great example is the K-Break kit for the Y32 Cedric/Gloria... Virtually every single Cedric/Gloria that makes it into the magazine has this kit (more than 90% of them do), so they naturally have to mix them up a little. Most choose to custom fit different fog lights, alter the bars running through the opening at the front, add chrome moldings, numberplate mounts etc. There are a million ways to make it unique

Theres a guy who bought an LS around the same time as me and ended up getting the same WORK rims that I wanted. No biggie, but I opted not to get the rims out of respect for his build. I hadnt seen those rims on an LS and he ended up getting them first and was very happy about it. :)

Now, My SC is another story. Ive got people asking how I did my custom work, so they could do the same to their car...down to the custom color schemes and custom interior. 

I dont mind a few things here and there that somone mixes with their own style, but there are people that will knock off an entire car and think its cool...or even worse, Front like they came up with the shit on their own. 

Ive built custom parts for people, even mass produced items for the SC. It is flattering if someone asks you for advice or to build them a part. I honestly get emails Everyday in regards to my SC....but dont knock off the whole damn car.

I'm lucky because my car has been in several magazines around the world, so when people bite...the world knows! LoL!! :) 

Seriously, It's one thing to like an element of someones car, But its weak as hell to straight bite someones unique style. 

Car modding is an expression and reflection of who YOU are.

This is why im taking so long to start picking up parts for my LS400 and SL500, I want them to be 'Mine'.

there are so many nice bodykits around and they can be made into fitting a nother car so you end up unique ..thats the way to rol when everybody got the same look :smiley: 
but also lot's of minor mods can be done like shaving a little thing here and there , get rid of a certain line in a bumper , removing stuf etc etc so options are limited:thumbsup:

i believe that once you add your own flare to your car, people will not have the same taste that you have. take for instance my car; SC300, the main kit for it is the Vertex Full Kit. not everyone can front 2600 bucks for aero upgrades so what do they do; buy a knock off and call it a day. just you having the authenicity of the kit will separate you from the pack.

now, i opted for the Vertex Lip Kit instead because it has a more "VIP style" to it but by me mixing in JP products inside the car and my own personal flare to it; separates me from the knock off guy (no offense guys!!!) 

sponsors, people and enthusiast remember the builders that stray from the ordinary and make their own platforms according to their personality.

if there wasnt any cars to pull ideas from, why would we fix up cars?

ended up not purchasing that kit and looks like someone did confirm the order for it here too. 

I used my kit $ to purchase a daily driver, so now i have more time to figure out what i want :)

...doesn't bother me at all... heck, i push MODE PARFUME just as much if not more than other brands of aero. i'd love to see more people rock the MP!:thumbsup:

hell yes, I changed my order on a set of rims.  I noticed a couple of people getting them, ontop of the already 3-4 sets I know exist in SoCal.  Canceled and got different rims.  I have to wait until June but hey...now I feel much better.

bothers me a little bit but you can't really avoid it. kits/wheels are mass produced. it just comes down to whoever can afford these parts. Going for VIP is not anyway cheap. so there still won't be a lot of people having the same kits/wheels. just my .02:smiley:

i think Junction Produce sell more than Fusa's, Tsuna's, and Agemaki's.....
and if running 19x13 with -26 offsets and 200mm fender pull is what you call vip; then i would seriously hit the drawing board on your next VIP (style) build up.....

yeah, uh clublexus guys, vip is flushed wheels. vipsc3, what wheels are you running? get something that will flush out. low +20's, or at least+30 or below, on something wider than an 8 inch rim. VIPstyle can be ALL about maximum sized wheels (mostly width/offset to achieve the most lip) wheels stuffed under stock bodies.

it's definitely NOT a "my lips are bigger than your's" attitude, whereas i have been seeing that been said at clublexus, yet i see no lip bigger than 2 inches! 

come here, learn, be happy. or stay there, don't drop your car, and buy expensive wheels in stock sizes.

^^ Lol at clublexus reference.  Most of the ppl on clublexus have the same rims/body kit.  Its like a swarm of stock fitting rims and lip kits.

totally not true....VIP tuning a car is like shopping for a new wardrobe. the shoes have to fit, and the attire has to be clean and subtle.

take a look at Fabulous' cars. the wheels do sport very nice offsets and they compliment the cars very well, while at the same time almost lay frame! 
the inner rim isnt cambered so much that it sends sparks on the road and rubber chunks at the trafffic behind them

when was the last time you saw a JP car with blister feders? almost never right?

all im saying is to each his own with how they mod their car, but if you really want to follow the true traditions of VIP tuning; first make the car reflect your personality and uniqueness. people remember the builders an the cars they build, not the money they spent.

I think you're getting mixed up with the EXE style.  That is more clean and suitable for your taste.  Some people like crazy offsets and some people like simple.  

And since when did Junction Produce set the VIP standards?  We can't all have JP Scaras, plush pillows and mouse pads...

I want to know what kind of rims and offsets YOU will be running that is so subtle VIP?  oxymoron anybody?

perfect example! im running Volk Lexion 203's 19x9+24 in the front and 19x10+35 in the rear. with a stretch on the rear with 225-35-19, the lip will kiss the fender with a roll. i have 3.75 inches of lip in the rear and 2.50 inches in the front. by having the right amount of camber, it will flush in nicely and give it that bagged VIP look. i aint hackn' up my fenders!!

to each his own. there's actually 3 defined 'versions' of VIP style. EXE, VIP, and BOZO.

yes, fabulous achieves exactly what i am talking about. biggest wheels stuffed under stock body. they also aren't 'laying frame' at all. they have a kit on, which cheats when it comes to 'laying frame'

that's perfectly fine. that's what VIP is all about.  BUT remember, vip is NOTHING about stock rims/ stock lip kits, and ever so high clublexus drop.:judge:

just remember, that if YOU really want to follow true traditions of VIP 'tuning', stay here, learn, and find out what it's all about. get some rims, with a nice stance, and slam your car. go from there. 

fusa's and kitsuna's are not VIP. and remember that agemaki is just the type of knot that they use in the fusa. the other one is kiku. that's not an actual 'vip accessory', it's a knot.

please post pictures of your rims with the 'flushed look'. what do you mean by 'bagged' look? do you have air suspension or no?

JP didnt set any standards! when they first started; everyone thought that was a fruit market in California! i dont have Scara's and quite frankly ever desire to have them unless i won them on a game show...

how about this; pick up the first issue of VIP magazine or JDM option "VHS" and instead of looking at the pictures first, read the columns that the journalist provide (your fellow japanese friends can translate if you don know the language...) THERE you will find where VIP came from!

And VIPsc3, I'd like to see you acheive FLUSH fitment on those specs for the SC.  The lower you go, the more you can tell how sunk they will be.  If I wasn't pulling my fenders, I'd be going with +10 or +15 with shaved fenders.

I noticed while looking at the 10th Year edition of Vip Car (arigato Gato)
That their featured cars were usually insanely wide, huge flared monsters, while the newer cover cars are often more sedate I guess, more conservative.

sorry, although I understand many VIPcars are tucking, I don't agree with tucking, I basically do not like it.  I much prefer the entire rim being exposed with some flange poke and the tire being mostly hidden.  Now that to me is VIP style.

The Soarers you showcased have got major tucking action going on, their rim fitment wasn't great to start with but the TS Project car is nice, kit looks like it fits GREAT...just need to change his rims haha.

i understand what you are saying Xotic and in some instances, i agree. the flush look isnt for everyone and some wish to go with the other route. i think which ever way you choose to get fitment on your wheels, if done right, it will come out nice. what wheel did you go with for your car if you dont mind me asking?

those are nice! before i decided on my 203's i was pondering the Work VS-KF's 19x10+15 and 19x11.5+22 but i got an offer i couldnt refuse on the Volks.

It was a pain to decide on my offset though, the LXZ aren't too generous with lippage...but it's ok...shouldn't be too bad now!

i really don't have to worry aboutanybody having the same thing as me. where i live, nobody knows anything about VIP cars. they see my wheels and ask why they stick out so far!
