Hey All !!!! First Post...but need of some advise please.
I just wanted to say hi to everyone here on the forum. To get things started I have a 1991 toyota camry and are in need of some advise to give it a more vip style "look" if at all possible. Here is what im working with so far:

I currently have a R33 bodykit from an accord that might be put and painted this summer. Should I spend the $500 for that OR save a little more and get coilovers so I can eliminate ALL fender gap?? Also could I flush out the rear wheels more with the fender with spacers to give the rear a slightly wider look? The coilovers would lower it a lot more and level it out too...is that a bigger priority? I really would appreciate any help guys...I absolutely love VIP Style cars:drool:

Why not sell the Camry and the bumper and buy a UCF10 LS? I don't mean offense by this..I just think you'd be much happier and on your way down the road to more happiness.

yes mr. presidentE. that was just what i was about to say. but then again, you probably couldnt sell that car for much, so might as well work with what you got.
anyways, i think you should go coilovers first. then you can see how much room you are going to work with. i mean, body clearances. wheel clearances. then do the kit and wheels. because, when you slam your car, you end up with a lot of backspacing, more room, to play with.

I looked at some UCF10 LS's and I do like them however, I think I'll work with what I have, selling the kit is a great idea too. Honda kits are tacky and crap anyway. I think if I got rid of all fender gap, leveled it out and did a good sounding magnaflow, id be happy, maybe some different wheels idk. I have a 38+ max offset and 7.5" is the widest I can go on the wheels. My lug pattern is 5x100 too...any wheel suggestions?? Thanks

your going to be hard pressed to find good offset wheels with that bolt pattern. Basically you can look at new celica, vw (golf), and cavalier wheels
for your car. The only reason I know that is because I have +35 offset 5x100
on my car. Check some of those forums for those vehicles and you may find
some used in the for sale sections. Good luck, oh and pull fenders and DUMP
it!

Coilovers for sure...
I doubt the specs you think are max, are actually max, unless you're completely unwilling to modify your fenders in any way.

subaru wheels are also 5x100. get something with a lip, stagger it and lower it as much as you can. fit the widest wheel you can in the back and stretch the tire.

I know I would. There are lots of hot LS400s, not many Camrys. Looks like he has a good start with the car he has right now anyways, I don't know about over there, but here, I've never seen a Camry of that age in that good of a condition. Selling those wheels and the other extra parts could net enough cash to have a very hot little mid-school whip. That generation of Camry looks like a mini-Crown, he can use that to his advantage.

omg that car black car is badass, exactly the look I want!!! Yea, sell the kit and get coilovers is a great idea. IF I can sell my wheels, I would indeed like something with a fat lip. 7.5 is the widest I can go. on that gold car, my wheels will tuck like that If I lower it that much wont they?
oh btw...when you say pull the fenders you mean roll them right...or am I wayy off?

See thinking like this is not going to make your car look like the one in the picture at all... You might need to pull the fenders and buy some wheels wider than 7.5". You can make this car look amazing but its going to take a lot of work. My suggestion, start looking for wheels you like buy them and make them fit!

7.5 is maximum because of suspension clearance issues I'm guessing?
Your wheels could tuck like that, but if you run larger wheels with lower profile tires, your wheel lip will be close to the fender. Without bulgy tires in the way, you can run a lower offset and go flush. That's where a stretch comes into play as well, but low profile tires that are skinny enough to be stretched on 7.5 are hard to find I think.
Hopefully you're not limiting yourself too much on the fender side. If you're willing to roll your fenders and give them a little tug (pull) you can make up for narrower wheels with a lower offset, though I don't think you'll be getting any kind of lip like that Crown has :p Those wheels are 9" in front, 11" in the rear, 18" diameter, Weds Kranze LXZ

I see now. thanks for clearing up my fender question. Does anyone know someone on here that could photoshop my pic so there is no fender gap and leveled out to give me an idea of what it would look like? On the 91 camry there aern't coilovers available BUT 86-89 celica front and 90-93 rear coilovers will.
thats about my only option because cutting springs isn't good at all.
Work Euroline DH would also be a wheel of choice. 17" of course.

why? I think if you could make 18's fit it will look a little nicer. Stretch the tires and with those coilovers slammed and the renders rolled, maybe pulled you could have a sweet looking ride. It looks like your taking the research in the right direction, keep that up and you can really make a nice looking car that your happy with.

i think 17's would be better only because he can go lower. if the car is low enough there wouldnt be a need to put a body kit.
17's also will allow more clearance for lower offsets and more neg camber. we all know what that gives us.... MORe LIP
it also fits the budget, allowing to touch up on the rest of the car
the old camry is an okay platform to start with. definitely reminiscent to an old crown, hell a lot better than an eclipse(ref to nonvipplatform sect)
mtimmons4---if you are serious about building this thing DO NOT BUY ANYTHING until you have researched and researched andresearched andresearched andresearched andresearched andresearched andresearched andresearched andresearched and researched. be patient,
i would advise to look into scion wheel fitments because they come in a 5x100 with agressive sizing
BTW i can build you a one off VIPStyle kit for your car

Here's my vision of your car...feel free to go with a different set of wheels, but I think going with old school VIP look is going to be a winner on this car.
Here's what you need to do: Get rid of your mudflaps...you're not going offroading anytime soon. Sell your wheels and that bodykit. The body will require some fender rolling and also a pull, so that the edge of the fender comes out further. Forget what Discount Tire told you about what you can and cannot fit...according to those guys I should have been running an 8" wide wheel with a +45 offset, and I definately proved them wrong. Go with some 16 or 17 inch wheels in 8-8.5 width with wither same or lower offset and stretch some 195 or 205 tires onto that. Then just slam the car.
Here's the pic:

if your question is directed to me, then my answer would be...
personally yes, >id< choose a camry over a ls400. BUT it'd be a 2007 camry over any year ls400. if you said ls430 or higher, i would reconsider.
but really you were probably curious why i offered the advice i did to the original poster. the reason why i suggested modifying his existing car is because he already alluded to not being interested in getting the ls400, so i tried to understand where he was coming from, his situation, and the way he may best be happy with some "vip'ish" features on his current car.
yes, a ls400 is more vip than his camry, but the ls400 also comes with increased risk. higher entry, taxes, insurance, maintenance, repair, and modification.
as cheap as these cars are, its not easy to realize the money pit they almost always become.
hope this helps.

It depends...some members go to a bodyshop and say: "here are the wheels, here's the car...make them fit". That will cost quiet a bit. You can rent a fender roller for about $50-100 and then either do it yourself, or have someone who's doen it before do it for you. Depending on how much pull you are planning on doing, you may have to repaint certain body panels. VIP is a tough look to pull off...so be prepared to spend some $$ to make it right.

You could, but that would cost more, what with molding them in and stuff.
You can pound the lip flat with a body hammer in about half an hour (use a flat dolly wrapped in tape on the other side) per fender based on my experience...it's slow because you have to start it gently to not brutalize your paint or bend your fender out of shape.
Fender rollers kick ass though, I'd rent one.

wheels
I think I got it, here is a 17" wheel that has a pretty good lip on it its 7" wide but I think it might work:
The car would be slammed with coilovers and have a deep lip, then fender roll and pull from an rear, then use spacers to widen it out as far as possible
what do you guys think???

I think it fails.
A one piece cast wheel won't cut it. Not to mention it's lacking in the style department.
Also, I doubt it comes in any interesting sizing. Better off buying quality wheels that get you flush the first time around anyways.
Those wheels have a lot of fake lip (lip deeper than the face) which will be quite disappointing in real life.
The sportiness won't help your cause either.

bummer, the vip wheel department is where I dont have too much knowledge.
Dark Anghell suggested an old school look, and I thought the wheels kinda fit that profile. So In vip wheels you dont want a sport look right? luxury and good taste is the mission.
what would be some good 17" that fit the bill here with the oh so important fittment and offset.
thanks for replying so fast btw. you've been a great help and i appreciate it man.

Well, old school styling and 17" wheels go well together, because 19"+ wheels are more of a recent-ish thing anyways. You should be able to find some nice mesh wheels like some old BBS or SSR, used for decent prices.

5Hx100 @ 17x7 +35 Forged Gold Red Cap. Tires Bridgestone T01 215/45
This set from MemoryFab is already sold, but it's an example of what you could very easily fit.
Pretty weak for lip though, and I've always found them to be on the sporty side.
Try something like this on and see how it fits, you might be surprised at how much room you have

Even if it doesn't fit at all, take measurements so you can find out what you can fit.
Good thing about 5-lugs is that you can get them in just about every kind of fit imaginable because it's used on FWD compacts and RWD big bodies alike.

and the stretch on the xB is nice looking, now i know what you guys mean
ok ok how about this idea, 7.5 in the front and something like a 17x8-8.5 in the rear. I have verde 17" that are 7.5 and flush up front right now. I have a half inch or so in the rear until flush
here is the rear... is that an 1" or 1 1/2" until flush??
in the rear is, would an 8.5 flush it up nicely?
that would get the staggering part done with, now I just need a style I like

ok ok how about this idea, 7.5 in the front and something like a 17x8-8.5 in the rear. I have verde 17" that are 7.5 and flush up front right now. I have a half inch or so in the rear until flush
here is the rear... is that an 1" or 1 1/2" until flush??

in the rear is, would an 8.5 flush it up nicely?
that would get the staggering part done with, now I just need a style I like
Looks like you could gain an inch just by rolling the lip of your fender flat.

i'm sorry, but i dont see any potential here. only bozodrift potential.
any other style, and you'll end up looking like the average person trying dress up their car to something that cant possibly be done correctly

I'm pretty sure bozodrift is a figment of the American imagination.
Bosozoku are primarily biker gangs, and their cars are well...no where near Vip
or drift.
Imagine this car but classier, with upsized wheels and you can see the potential.

oh well, i guess i wont dump any more $$$ into the car, even thought I think that pictured looks ok too, that isnt old school??? Man, im confused as hell, ill just wait and get a lexus or something someday...geez
it just seems that vip style is so meticulous
i have a question for you all, given my situation...how much $$$$ would throw at my car to get it to suit your tastes if you HAD to keep my car? Would you fix it up like the car below, or do something totally different?

If I had you car and HAD to keep it, I still wouldn't cut corners. Because it's not so much what kind of car it is, but how you treat it. That's why cars like that green one I posted still turn heads to this day. Just wouldn't be the same with sunken battleship Rota wheels :p

keep your can and do what you think looks nice with it. if you just slam it and get some aggressive 16's it would look great.

Tastes depends on the person. I think the car has potential, I have friends here building one but more towards drifting than VIP. Just keep it clean and stay away from the "Balliiinnngggg, I GOT 22's on my toaster" style wheels.

Looks like he has a good start with the car he has right now anyways, I don't know about over there, but here, I've never seen a Camry of that age in that good of a condition. Selling those wheels and the other extra parts could net enough cash to have a very hot little mid-school whip. That generation of Camry looks like a mini-Crown, he can use that to his advantage.

man the camry does like like the old crown. You should base your decision on that look. dont do that r33 kit or whatnot. that kit is on every single import civic, accord, integ, etc. just keep it simple. dont worry too much about us being negetive or what not, people just havent seen it done so do it. just the coilover idea and rim suggestions are great starter points.

First question: are coilovers even available for that Camry?
I think he'll need to address that first, otherwise any intentions of a "VIP-ish" look go right out the window.
As far as 17" wheels allowing the car to go lower- that depends on the tire size.
I believe this car has room for an 18x8 or 19x8 with proper offset and a little tire stretching. I've seen 20x8s on Sentras for crying out loud. Heck, my '85 MR2 (14x5.5 stock wheels) now has 18x8 front & 18x9 rear wheels on it... the MR2 crowd said "it couldn't be done." They were wrong!
The 5x100 PCd is going to be a bear... most wheels in these sizes are going to have high offsets for a PT Cruiser or a WRX. Unfortunately, I don't have any brilliant words of wisdom for this (unless you want to buck-up for custom buolt three-piece wheels).

start by grabbing those coilovers you said will work. once you get those in, then you can see how much clearance you really have to work with getting some wheels stuffed under there.
old school style will look way better than new, because of the genre, and if you don't do it right, new age styling will just look kinda weird.
if your problems with the lug pattern being to hard to find a good set of wheels, you can always find some wheel adapters, and be able to change the bolt pattern to 5x114 with those. keep in mind though, that those usually push the wheels out about 25mm at the same time.

i want to modify some ground control sleeves, the thing is that i need spring rates for a 1991 camry before I can buy some. I plan on taking some 86-89 or something coilovers from a celica that you can buy from their site and specifying my rates for them. both front and rear. Then I guess Ill still have to worry about the strut travel. Take my picture I posted and eliminate ALL wheel gap...that is what I want. I would like to keep my wheels and camber the rears a tad or use spacers to get wide...or stretch tires, proally stretch tires....yea...that sounds good

sell those wheels! i know theyre the cheap fake Lexani's as i know someone w/ them on a PT cruiser, theyre heinous. Get the coilovers, then get some new wheels. you can go wider than 7.5 for sure. f*ck what anyone says anyhwere else about wheel fitment... 90% of people are complete pussies when it comes to putting wheels on their cars and say u cant go wider than a certain size. Its never true, i know cause i do it every day. if you have the right stance, your car would be old school badass
