1999 Lexus GS300 from New Zealand!

Greetings all, I posted a little while ago in the intro area about how I was planning on getting a GS soon.. now I have :D BMW is for sale and it's time to move on to better things! Unfortunately my phone is actually a potato so any photos are rubbish (new camera should be here Monday..).

Forum image
The night I picked it up. Bog standard!

As soon as I picked it up I had a few things ordered for it, boot lip, clear side markers, Depo tails, roof wing and front lip.

Forum image
Today I installed the tails and boot lip. The side markers were the wrong sort so will get others this week.

Roof wing and front lip have yet to arrive. I've also scored a set and a half of Haute Couture 19x9 front, 19x10 rear (2 lots of 19x10 rear with different offsets) which will be coming from Japan in our container that we bring over about every 6 months or so. Also keeping an eye out for lip kits on there too, loving Aimgain but for the first stage of this project that might need to wait.. As we're the NZ agent for Megan Racing I'll arrange some EZ Streets as well once the container is near!

It's also the black leather interior version which is very hard to find in NZ, most of them are tan.. couldn't live with that!

As you can see I've installed clear side markers as well to remove the orange from the vehicle. During the weekend I gave a go at fitting the TTE eBay lip I purchased, was about an inch too short >_< So will flag that and order an Admiration lip kit from Japan to go in our container as well I think! Good thing, the roof wing fits up nice so off to the painter for that!

I've had my roof wing painted and collected that now so just need to clean the car up and attach it :) Then it's just a loong wait until our container arrives.

On the other side I'm looking to start playing with LED lighting and custom lighting.. nobody does it in NZ :D

Fitted up this today and gave the car a wash.. finally; it needed it! Now the eager wait for wheels/kit to arrive.. Sort of divided on it.. I think it will look better with the car low and kitted etc but I was really after something that basically extends the roof line a little bit over the glass, any of the ones I found didn't have that, most of them curved upwards which is not what I'm looking for. We will see!

Well now it's been a while, not much happened as have been waiting for the container to land and now it has.. :D

Forum image
Wheels fitted up, new tyres getting sorted this week as unfortunately those ones that came with it are mostly damaged :( Otherwise, will look really good when it's lower.

Lip kit has arrived too, fitment is pretty good I just need to get my panel/painter around to trim some bits, fit and paint match it. Coilovers should be arriving any day now as well and I've removed the towbar.. so much nicer without!

Artist impression.. with airbags probably haha!

OK, so.. some interesting things happened in the last few days.

I've fitted up the coilovers, so much adjustment I could basically run the car into the ground.. Yellow Speed ftw! Also, ruined a couple tyres and found out the hard way that some people do shitty guard repairs..

Forum image
Comparison of rear standard vs rear Yellow Speed.. we were like yeah nah needs to be way lower so wound it down.. jokes on me I had to wind it up shit loads. Looks like standard spring is heavier than Yellow Speed spring!

Forum image
This is how it sat after rear was in at the first height. Look at the difference between front and rear!

Forum image
Front height after first install.. after the end of the night driving just up the road a bit the whole guard lip was bent outwards and my tyre has big chunks missing now. Needless to say I didn't drive it for the rest of the night.

Forum image
The next day I had a look at one of the rear tyre properly that had the most damage.. pretty nailed :o

Forum image
After we have done the first guard on the front left, due to the calliper being too big the roller didn't get all the way around. It's a work in progress anyway; will do more on it next weekend.

Yep sure is the plan! I have another set of 19x10 the same but different offset which I could put on and it would fit better in the rear.. but I don't want to :D No problem have some more guard work incoming to accommodate :)

Also a little tricky to see but I switched my black grill with a friend who has already stripped the paint.

Righto so after doing a good lot of guard bashing I've set it to the height that I will be getting it certed at. 340mm all around from centre of the wheel to guard.

I'm going to the track this weekend so dropping the car off to get some panel work done and rust removed from previous poor repair work on the guards as well as (if there's time) fitting up the kit in preparation for paint.

So over the weekend I managed to win a FGK exhaust on Yahoo which is pretty sweet, also spied an Aimgain rear bumper today which I'm going to keep my eyes on.. also this happened:

It's mostly steel pulled out and widened then filled etc

Going in again this weekend for finishing up and fitting some body kit pieces

Another weekend another bit done.

Guards are finished now aside from paint. Had to just properly primer them up and make some small adjustments. Side skirt is mocked up as well as you can see. We need to mock up front lip and fix front bumper (has some small bump in it causing a difficulty in lip fitting), fit rear lip and paint.

Also need to figure out which parts to trim for the sides, as you can see there are a couple of bits missing. It fouls on the side skirt to will probably end up cutting back the bottom of the plastic car trim.. not quite sure yet.

Awesome weather today so instead of being sociable I decided to do some more work on the Lexus.

Forum image
Fitting back the trim on the guard area. This is what I'll end up doing. Just need to cut the bottom bits off the doors and it'll look good. I don't want to remove that bottom trim altogether as it leaves a groove which looks average unless it was filled in; and that costs more money.

Forum image
Using a highly technical combination of JIF (it's bathroom cleaner with a bit of grit in it for the overseas folk), Silvo (didn't have any Brasso on hand), Scratch X and rags I polished the headlights. Short of sanding and pissing about with that I think they turned out ok.. other side is not as good but way nicer than before. It's amazing what nice clean headlights can do to the front of the car.

Forum image
Looks like I have an oil leak, possibly rocker cover seal as it seems like a bit of oil hanging around there; any ideas? I can change that seal no worries.. hopefully it's just something easy like that. It's not a major leak though.

Forum image
Also spent a couple hours fitting up the TTE rep front lip. Using another highly technical combo of D1NZ official body kit install system (cable ties), race tape and some averagely applied silicon goo it's about where I want it to be. Fit is not perfect but I used a heat gun to try and mould it a little bit better. Race tape will be removed tomorrow so hopefully it doesn't fall off. Also it pays to note obviously this is being removed and painted so it's more of a mock up than anything else.

So from here just need to get rear lip back from panel shop and finishing up some of the other trim bits we're good to send to final paint!

So good to have the roof wing back after it flew off ceremoniously on the motorway almost hitting Nathan's car hahaha

I'm really happy with how the paint turned out and how it's all one colour now is a bonus. Still a couple touch up bits to complete early in 2014. This will be all that is done this year but next year things will change again!

Plans so far for 2014:
Fit Megan Racing rear LCAs that we have in stock and complete wheel alignment
Fit Aimgain front bumper that's on the way
Fit Fujitsubo (I think it was Fujitsubo) exhaust that's on the way
Looking for new rear bumper
Refurbish wheels
Tint
General touch ups

This year is just the start :)

Height will stay as is, being daily driver I need to have it somewhat practical. As it its I'm scraping coming out of the driveway >_<

The coilovers are awesome, love them. They're not super soft which is good otherwise we'd have some problem with the guards hitting the wheel so I'm very happy with their performance.

This weekend I was going to work on the Honda but then figured I really need to give this car a nice clean interior and exterior so ended up doing that instead!

Forum image
Before I started cleaning I thought I would remove the Lexus and GS300 badges from the rear and just leave the middle Lexus logo.. look at the shit underneath!

Forum image
Problem is.. after some time removing the gunk and shit buildup it has pulled some of the paint off as well which is annoying..

Forum image
Looks sweet from far away..

Forum image
Forum image
Then you get closer.. T_T Those outlines are where the paint has gone.. I have touch up paint on the way.. but the plan in the next couple months is to respray the boot anyway because it's pretty scratched up !

Forum image
Forum image
Also had a quick hoon at polishing the lips, worked a bit but the wheels aren't the best condition anyway so really need a refinish.

you sure it's paint? sometimes it could just be hard water deposit. i use a 3m stripe off wheel to get rid of the adhesive residue, then a cut with polish did the trick. you're lucky you don't have holes.

if it's indeed paint, touch up will work too.

Ok well I got the new hub rings and put them on, maybe makes marginal difference but not much so the next step is install the lower control arms in the rear and have it aligned properly then see what happens.

Also took the car to a mate on the weekend for him to have a squiz at the rear badge stuff but yeah it's respray material. Tried some touch up I got but it was way different haha.. China paint ftl; oh well respray was always on the cards anyway.

On the plus side container is landing this month so new exhaust and front bumper in there.. and also I just won the bid on this Aimgain rear :D

Planning to put some LEDs in the vents above exhaust I think. Anyway that's still 5-6 months away until the next container gets here.

So the container is landed now and have had my personal parts collected.. seems like one muffler went missing somewhere in transit (probably still at NZ depot, just need to find it) and the front bumper Aimgain half cut part won't realistically work.. but that was a cheap gamble so I'm not too cut up about it. On the plus side.. Weds Bazreias also arrived :)

19x9 / 19x10 +32 or similar, can't recall they're in the storage. Wider pair is chrome face but unfortunately one of them has some big chip out of it which is a real shame as the other one is pretty good. Thinking probably have all refinished anyway and make them all chrome face or polished lip and front brushed silver.

This is the Aimgain bumper part.. the seller actually didn't even know what car it was for and it's not wide enough to be for GS/Aristo as it turns out! Also the side has been cut off so it doesn't wrap around at all. No matter, will keep looking for a new front bumper. Pretty set on Aimgain and one will turn up if I'm patient.

Fujitsubo exhaust sans one muffler.. where is it.. we will find out! Decent kink in a bit of the pipe which I was aware of before buying but it was a steal and I can't really see it having a major effect on the overall performance so not fussed there.

So now it's a little bit more waiting to find out that muffler where it's gone then fit that up. Then hmm.. need to repaint the boot but otherwise.. it's going ok for now. Still need to fit the Megan Racing rear lower arms too and give it a bit of a service.

OK, found the other muffler it's at the depot still. That's all good will get it shipped to me.

Weds as they sit on the car no spacers nothing. Front is actually about right, could maybe go for another 5-10mm but not hugely fussed about that. Rear definitely needs new outer lips to bring that closer to the edge maybe about 20mm more.

Artist impression of aired out.. I don't have air but it's really the only way it could be like that haha. I'd say it would actually be on the ground at this height.

Took the Weds off for refinishing and put Auto Couture set back on as well as lowered another 10mm or so. Now I'm getting the bumping of the upper arm every now and then, doh.

Anyway, I've entered the car into a local show coming up early April so this is basically how it will be for that show aside from hoping to have the bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) painted for the show as they're chipped up and a bit busted up paint wise.

Yeah me too, really like the Auto Coutures.. I think the tyres are no good there is a really bad vibration at 90kmh+, I've checked wheels are of course tight on there and balanced etc. Ball joints were done recently and don't show sign of damage so I suspect the tyres are a bit messed up.. sidewalls too big anyway

So it's looking like probably can't get the car to paint in time for Automania, oh well.. not like the Auto Couture wheels will be in good condition anyway ha! But good news..

I've been looking for a front bumper for ages and after getting that front cut part only and being disappointed I have been on the hunt. Managed to score this..

Forum image

Now from what I can tell I don't think it's a genuine piece but can't be sure. The seller was not sure on the manufacturer so I suspect there are no badgers or markings. It could be.. Auto Couture though..

Impossible to tell though using a black car for modelling.

Anyone have any ideas? Anyway, a while away yet as they'll be in the next container.

Oh, another thing. I've done with the v1.0 of the MOONLIGHT dancing LED for JZS16x, check it out - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=513062522139156&set=vb.444043482374394&type=2&theater

I like where this is going! That looks like a Version Select bumper which is an Auto Couture replica. I believe they are made in Japan. Maybe you can fuse that bumper with the Aimgain one. If it's not wide enough maybe cut it in half and fill it in the middle?

Looks like you could be right - http://versionselect.com/shop/index.php/4dr-vip-bodykits/lexus-gs300-400-jzx160/nissan-240sx-s13-version-ii.html

I will need to ask them if I can buy the fog lights. Unless you/anyone knows what fog lights will fit inside?

I'll contact Version Select and see if they have any idea/recommendation.

Anyway, I went to fit my exhaust today but seems like the OEM bolts are pretty rusted and seized up so going to check it with my friend who works in a shop next week.. but I did do some more small things for the upcoming show.

So not too much going on; exhaust slowly getting scraped away on the driveway but mainly just waiting on more parts to come in on the next container. In the meantime I figured I'd split the 4 wheels I have at the moment in anticipation for the other two to arrive and refinish to begin.

Originally I was looking at new lips but the new pair incoming should fill out the rear really nicely and the front I can use the other 19x10 set so with what I've got I should be able to make a good set. Will be going for polished lips and brushed face. The full chrome look is good with really extreme sizes but I don't think it suits what I want at the moment.

Thanks dude.

Ended up taking out the strut bar as it was making the car handle weirdly and vibrating etc.. figured it's a luxury cruiser it doesn't need super tight handling. Anyway, cleaned it after about a month and a bit so took a photo near to my house. Container is not far away so the changes will start after that arrival.. :)

In our recent container some pieces arrived for me, Aimgain rear kit; new front kit and new wheels. I didn't try to fit the kits as I was limited for time but thought I'd check what the wheels look like.. and they are perfect.*

Perfect

Forum image
Sadly this is not my house

Forum image
For show I want to have it lower so the wheel lip is near to the top of the guard, so about an inch lower

Forum image
Good to see wheels fill out the guard nicely though

Forum image
Shit loads of clearance. More than current wheel/tyre combo. Extra stretch on these full quality Indo something tyres helps.

Forum image
My driveway is shit, so now I have a cracked rear skirt.. oh well.. Aimgain soon.. :)

Also after test fitting a set on the front I will do all chrome.

Front spec will be 19x10 +34 (with a 5-8mm spacer to clear brakes)
Rear spec 19x10 -1. Probably don't need 5mm spacer, seems pretty good.

Sadly this is not my house

For show I want to have it lower so the wheel lip is near to the top of the guard, so about an inch lower

Good to see wheels fill out the guard nicely though

Shit loads of clearance. More than current wheel/tyre combo. Extra stretch on these full quality Indo something tyres helps.

I wasn't really going to work on the car this weekend because of the weather/couldn't be bothered but I didn't have anything to do today so I thought I'd have a go fitting up the Aimgain rear bumper. It's even more pain in the ass than I remembered from taking the bumper off previously.. things like this need a lift !

Couple of shots fitted.

The mufflers will now become a bit of a problem. As you can see the bumper sits on top of the muffler now as they're the wrong shape for the space in the bumper. I will need to find some oval shape ones to fill better.

There are a few parts where the fitting is not quite up to where I'd like it to be. I suspect some of this is due to my amateur fitting skill and not mounting all of the mounts properly.. also on the right side there are a couple of mounts which are a bit broken.
Forum image
Left side near tail light.

Forum image
Strangely, the gap under the right tail light is larger than the left.. maybe due to the broken mounts on this side not too sure.

Forum image
Left side again, bit further along. There are some mounts which are not attached from the OEM bumper as well on this one. Panelbeater will need to switch those from OEM part to this one.

Overall not too bad, I was never really a big fan of how pronounced the lip was on the other bumper and always had the plan to have a full bumper replacement at some stage.. next the front.. or maybe a new battery; seems like having the boot open most of the day runs the battery out haha

So on Monday the car started acting a bit strange, power steering dropping intermittently, charge light came on and off and the aircon would turn off by itself sometimes. Google research suggested I have cancer and also that it could be either a tensioner, belt or crank pulley. Crank pulley being the worst possible scenario but also the one that it ended up being..

Forum image

This is the aftermath of crank pulley. Basically the accessories are run off the same serpentine belt which runs around the smaller bit that has come apart. So when the crank spins the belt does not, causing the problems.

Also..

Had Toyota fit up my Megan Racing lower arms and align it all, I think they raised the car because it doesn't scrape on my drive so bad..better drop it down again and wreck the alignment hahah! Toe is much much better now, happy with that!

Additionally had cambelt changed and a leaky cam seal/pulley which was changed at the same time. Oh, and had it serviced.. car better not complain for the next year now !

Time to do some out sourcing! Shipping the faces of two fronts that I will use and the outer lips to wheel refinishers.
Forum image

They gave me some rough pricing via email and it seems the most cost effective will be to polish the centres and the lips rather than chrome the centres which is notoriously expensive. Also asking them pricing of anodising the outer bolts gold as one pair of wheels already had gold bolts so either do that or have them chromed/silver anodised..

Once I have an idea of the pricing on the front pair will remove tyres from the rear pair and send them the faces/outer lips also. Those ones are chromed so will need to be stripped as well first to match the polished.

Had word back from wheel re-conditioners today, going ahead with gold bolts. I tried to buy some new ones from WEDS but they won't sell them :( Only if they do the whole job themselves which obviously isn't going to work..

Could go with the universal type ones but then it wouldn't say WEDS on it and it's all about the detail! So I've found out that gold plating some of the silver ones that I have from other sets is not too expensive; will do that for the other 2 wheel's worth.

So our aero container arrived over the weekend and inside it was a new rear wing :D I don't have a good photo of this yet as the other one is still on the car.. but I did manage to win these on the weekend..

Forum image
Aimgain mufflers! I've needed these ever since I got the Aimgain bumper as they're the correct size for the space in the bumper. They also look as though they could bolt up to OEM mid pipe which would make it super easy because I like bolt on stuff :D

Fenders should be here in the next week or so hopefully as well.

Took off the roof wing as well as it was starting to come up at the edges again and will fly off shortly if I didn't remove it. Tends to do that as the wing is slightly warped at the edges.. deciding if I should go for a smaller roof wing and large rear wing this time..

So yesterday embarked on a mega mission..

The good news is...

Forum image
Forum image
Ricer vent fenders are mounted! They're not quite as wide as the flared ones I had on there so I will probably need to get the Megan Racing upper arms to pull the wheel in when I have the new wheels on there.. Otherwise looks ok. Little bit of damage around one of the corners and needs more work to be a better fit but I just put them on for now so I can drive around without having a smashed in fender. Painter can complete the job.

What you would notice is I still have the OEM bumper.. well that other bumper I got turned out to be not even close to fitting even with quite a lot of trimming there were big gaps all over the place and it just wasn't working out. So new plan, I have lip kits in stock so will get a different bumper (or fill in the washer holes on this one) and mount one of those lips on. That will do for now as I don't have time / too cheap to pay for air freight on a different bumper before show times.

Also annoyingly it seems one of my headlights has gained a condensation problem.. for no particular reason >_< Looking at getting some Vertex edition HID lights instead.. will see if it resolves itself first hah, maybe it will dry out.

Had a bit of spare time today..

Forum image
So the front will need some camber; will order some Megan Racing camber arms for that this week. Not too much though; probably will be similar to the rear which will be a good look.

Forum image
Both front mocked up so I can get an idea of the look. Not bad.. you'll notice the wings are missing.. they'll be reinstalled don't worry. Definitely needs some wing action for sure.

Couple of comparison shots

Forum image
I'm 19x10 all around but you can see the difference in offset.. rear on the left.

Forum image
Left is the chromed, right is the polished. Have to say I'm pretty chuffed with the outcome of the wheels, chrome look basically which is what I was going for :D

Now the hard part... what colour wheel nuts? T_T. I think gold as well.. I tried with chrome/silver ones but it just looks a bit average.

Haven't done much on the car at the moment just driving it around and waiting on other stuff to be done. I've decided to re-use some tyres I have in storage as the paint bill will probably be larger than I anticipate so need to save the cash! So the 10" front will get 235/35. Should help with fitting then in once I get the camber arms installed as well. The rear doesn't matter so much about stretch etc but I have some Advan A048 tyres to go on those haha.

Was hoping to get the rear wheels back yesterday but not quite completed yet.. mufflers not yet arrived.. waiting for stuff sucks T_T

Gettin there..

Washed the car yesterday (wooo big news right?) But then I still had a little bit of time to kill in the afternoon so I Installed (poorly) the new front lip that I will be using..

Helps to bring the side skirt in line with the front now as before the front was higher. Accentuates the empty space between front lip and ground though.. lol

Oh, heres's the under side of the old lip which was not as low as this one..almost worn through
Forum image

Just need to get the fog lights back in there, bit of a tricky job as the lip goes into the space where the lights go but I can just trim that off.

So fun things happened! I picked up the other pair of wheels which was being refinished and had some tyres fitted.

They're full polish with gold dipped hardware. Rear tyres for this day were Advan AD08 255-35.

Forum image
Forum image
For the front originally I was going to get camber arms for the top; when I installed the wheels and dropped it right down though they tuck in perfectly! Pictured is pretty much full low without taking out spring perches and stuff but I raised it about 15mm to drive; no issue.

Forum image
Forum image
The rear however.. when I lowered it down quite far and took it off the jack the tyre hits the guard haha. So for that day I raised it up but I have some 225-35 tyres which I will put on there. That should resolve that.

You can see rear is raking quite a bit.. last photo just for fun; I saw it in my neighbourhood so decided to take a comparison!

Also; I've decided to wrap the car as my painter is unable to paint the car any time soon. Satin pearl white 3M wrap; quite excited !

Was starting to get worried about if these would arrive in time but I had a nice surprise arrive this afternoon!

Forum image
Forum image
Aimgain BF-Class mufflers to match the rear bumper! I was super happy to find these and purchased without hesitation.

Forum image
They must use different tips for the same mufflers or perhaps they have these adjustments so you can angle it depending on how you have setup the bumper.. not sure. Nifty though.

Forum image
As they're muffler only they simply bolt onto the factory system :) Fujitsubo system out, factory + Aimgain in!

This will happen on Saturday, along with changing my tyres. I have arranged to take the car to the wrap shop on Sunday so sometime before that I just need to take off the front lip and get it fitting exactly right as well as get the front foglights fitting as well.

It's all go, just in the nick of time !

The list is slowly reducing..

So previously the tyres for the rear wheels were not going to fit with the low that I want. I had these 225/35 left over from some other wheels so put them on. Stretch is probably more than I prefer but I didn't have to pay for them so... also yes the camber wear is bad haha; not ideal for driving.

Forum image
Another thing today we fit up the Aimgain mufflers. I expected these to be straight bolt on but the shop ended up cutting and bending my factory exhaust a bit and you can see they're still not perfect. I'm not going to adjust them anymore as if I was going to go further with exhaust I would remove the tips completely and glass over the exhaust holes on the bumper so nothing there. A la Mercedes E series.

So I didn't end up doing that F&F show because they wanted the car to stay at the theatre for like 4 days.. no thanks! Not much happened lately as I've been away and just generally unmotivated but I have to put it back to WOF inspection-spec now.. and I have an idea for something..

Forum image
I did end up getting a car cover haha

Forum image
Then went to start the car and the battery was properly dead.. it hasn't been run in probably about a month.. managed to get it going again though after a while, new battery on the cards though as this one's toast.

Forum image
Hmm.. if only I had air..

Forum image
I need to replace my inners or my HIDs so they're even.. probably replace the inners as one of them is having problems anyway.

Forum image
This shows how much I have to wind up the front to pass inspection.. even at this height it's technically not legal but they don't have any issue with it.

Forum image
No particular reason for this image, just really like how the reat tail lights look with the white.

Also, the reason you see the bumper is off in one of the images above is I needed to take the front lip off to get the fog lights out because I have an idea.. seeing as I broke the plugs for the fogs I'm going to have a play at making dancing LEDs out of them. Hopefully turns out ok!

This shows how much I have to wind up the front to pass inspection.. even at this height it's technically not legal but they don't have any issue with it.

Had some spare time today so started playing around with the dancing LED foglights that I'm looking to do. Made a sort of very rough prototype of one side just to refresh my memory!*
*
Forum image
They actually came apart pretty easily compared to some other lenses. The lenses are glass on these so didn't have to worry about warping them.

Forum image
These plugs are a godsend, don't know why I didn't use them earlier!

Forum image
Just sitting a basic small board in there to test out the pattern and make sure my experiment worked.

The final product will cover majority of the space and I will cover over it with some reflective/chrome vinyl so it doesn't have the board showing.

My main problem is figuring out how to secure the board inside the light assembly.. any ideas? I could try and silicon/glue it in from the other side but the space is difficult to get to; might end up being the only way though.

All the retros Ive seen done the boards are silicon in. like make silicon platforms to place the boards on then silicon it in.

Yeah I think it will be siliconed in a little bit, I did have a thought last night can use that foam tape to build a sort of platform and sit the boards on then a couple dabs of hot glue to secure.

Managed to finish up a basic concept of one side today, looks like it should work out so I will probably wait until I have the white LEDs in before I start doing both sides because she's a big job!

I've taken some pictures of a few steps to see what I did..

Forum image
Started by making a template out of cardboard

Forum image
Then did a shitty cut out job of a protoboard. If I had a dremel or similar this may be easier.. Also the board isn't quite long enough to go right to the edge of the light >_<

Forum image
Then I wrapped it in some chrome vinyl to get that reflective look and hide the brown.

Forum image
Put the lens on to see sort of how it looks.. you can see there it's easy to see the edges.. not so good when it's close to the lens.

Forum image
After marking out the holes for the LEDs.. time to get soldering!

Forum image
Forum image
Some considerable time later you end up with this.

Forum image
I put it back in but pushed the board to the back of the housing, looks better this way.

Forum image
Forum image
Forum image
How it looks in various states of illumination. Doesn't seem too bad with the mounting near the back of the housing so I'll probably make the other side like that as well.

Brief Instagram video of what it looks like - https://instagram.com/p/2c5yO5mbP9/?taken-by=mlracing

Difficult to see the motions of the LEDs properly as the camera can't really capture it but looks pretty cool in real life, just needs the other side done..

Nah red is just for the concept as I don't have any white LEDs in yet, they are still on the way

So I tried to fit them but it doesn't fit even on the back without a slip on spacer!

Forum image
Dumb. No matter though they don't look any good on the back anyway, offset is too high. I did try to fit it on the front but of course it hits the brakes heaps and I can't even get a wheel nut on. Might get some 5mm slip on and see what happens.

Forum image
After that it all just got a bit wild. How about these on Kermit? hahaha

Forum image
I realised I had run out of beers so took the car to put some air in the tyres and get more beers. Even looks pretty good at this height and wheels and it has no front bumper haha! Got plenty of looks on that one..

I was working on the other car and had a few things I wanted to get done on this car while I was out and doing stuff. First up, if anyone asks you to replace the headlight bulbs in their GS300/Aristo regretfully decline without failure! Worst job ever!

Forum image
Alex's 101 trick to not wrecking knuckles while doing the install work.. way too tight in there for gloves so I had to improvise. Would not wish this job on my worst enemy.. it may be easier if you have small child hands though.

Forum image
Anyway I finally got them both installed after much swearing and some burning smell due which ended up coming from the bulb where it is meant to ground with the cable.. met some plastic instead.. (my bad). Resolved and works ok now. The picture is odd it shows them quite green but actually they're much more clear/blue. Which is great because previously I had the OEM 4500k ones and it had a very yellow look against the inners which are cheap blue/white LEDs that I actually need to replace as one is flickering. These are just 6000k so still legal and doesn't look too blue.

Also while I was there I replaced the battery. Side note, Lexus Premium Sound System cranks pretty hard with a tape player adapter.

Also a couple days ago I was a bit bored and had finished my work for the day so I had a go at polishing up the front Bazreias. After being out in the rain and muck they'd got a bit shit and faded with some water spots and the usual. At first I started with Megiuar's metal polish but it just wasn't quite harsh enough, I think it's more of a finishing polisher. When I moved onto Autosol the magic happened. It was hard work and there is still more to do but for now it's good enough. Just need to get the rear pair out some stage and do that on them too, perhaps this weekend.

A little while ago I purchased some from roll centre adjuster blocks from Japan, 23mm so not huge but enough to make a difference. Finally got around to installing them today. Not too difficult just getting the bolts out is probably the hardest part if they're a bit stuck in there. The kit came with longer new bolts and I torqued them all up nice afterwards as well.

Forum image
Simple idea just a block that pushes up the hub a little bit.

A whole lot more thread to play with at the front now so if I really wanted to I could put it completely on the ground!

Shitty weather today and my white LEDs arrived a little while ago so I did some work on that. Pro tip for new players - the forward voltage matters haha. I didn't really understand it before but the red ones have a lower forward voltage so can use many more, white ones have higher so I could only use 4 in each row before it would run out of juice. No matter, still worked out looking ok. Not sure how it will look when actually on the car.. Tomorrow might get cracking on the other side.

Few bits arrived today wooo

Forum image
Have wanted the blinker in the mirror for a while and it seems like the easiest way is to get these covers with LED lights inside. These already attached to mirror and I can't easily figure how to remove it so I will just get the wrap guy to wrap it while it's on the mirror still then just install the whole lot and wire up the indicator to the fender winker. Which then I will be able to play with fibreglass and remove the fender light :D

Forum image
Also these arrived, factory window visors with all the clips in tact and no cracks.

Will get to installing these once car is back from the panel shop

Ordered a couple more so will test it works when they arrive then work out the best way to control that from inside the cabin.

So I drove down to Taupo for the weekend and it went OK (actually it's a bit of hard work on some of the roads!). Anyway went to pop into see a mate in Rotorua that runs a tyre/align shop and got that looked at seeing as I can't remember the last time it was done and I had made several changes over the last while.. made me laugh..

Forum image

So much toe incorrect on the driver side. Unfortunately for whatever reason the toe adjust bolt had some problem and the part where it is meant to hit on to change the toe is bent (how does that even happen?) so I will look at some toe arms to get that all squared up.

Definitely feels much lighter in the front now vs trying to fight it all the time. Also dropped the mirrors off to the Jerry to wrap them up for me, should find out how that's going.

So just ticking off some of the small things now, have done pretty much all the majors that I want to do on this car. Today I got around to installing the monsoon guards on the windows.. made a right hash of a couple before I figured out you don't actually need the double sided tape all the way around as the clips hold quite a lot of it in place.. nonetheless they on there now so I can actually open the window when it's a raining a bit.

So this shifter gate has been pissing me off for a while, wondering how I can replace it so it's not all smashed. Looking on Yahoo doesn't yield many good results for that part and I don't really want to put some kind of leather thing to fake it being a BMW.. ideas? Find one at a wrecker maybe? New parts available?

Forum image
Also picked up my mirrors from my wrap guy just need to figure the best way to wire in the indicators.. I think it will be easy to just use the current wiring from the fender indicator and put them through as stealthy as possible.

Test fitted up the mirrors/covers that just got wrapped.. looks better in photo than in person in my opinion.. still a bit undecided if I want to run them or not. I do like how the Aristo mirror glass is bigger and blue vs the Lexus mirror which is a bit smaller.

Forum image
As my car is not Aristo and also it's a 99 the plugs are not the same between the mirrors.. so I'll have to wire it up to suit. The wiring of the indicator should not be too bad I can just run the wiring from the fender indicator. My original plan was to replace the fenders with ones that don't have the indicator so I would just have the mirror winker there but.. may not have this car for too much longer so probably won't end up doing that.

Test fitted up the mirrors/covers that just got wrapped.. looks better in photo than in person in my opinion.. still a bit undecided if I want to run them or not. I do like how the Aristo mirror glass is bigger and blue vs the Lexus mirror which is a bit smaller.

With the weather being poos today I couldn't go outside to wire up the mirrors so did a little more on these. Getting pretty close now to putting them in the car.

Wondering the best way to make these a little more weather proof though, might try and make something out of the bulb holder or something unless I can find a nice rubber bung to go in that space.

Yeah they might be all good, I need to wait for a decent period of fine weather to take the bumper off and do all that.

I did some small wiring today, got the new mirrors working, not yet the LED part but the electric adjustment works. I don't have folding mirrors in my car, no real desire or need so the wiring wasn't too difficult. For those in similar situation, and for my reference a little bit the wiring is simple. You need just four wires to make the basics work.

Obviously I fixed up the connections properly after figuring that out.

If you have folding and (I guess) heating then you'll need to figure the rest out. For the LED winker part.. thinking to take the speaker housing out and run the wire through there and out near the other wiring to the main cabin but then divert it to behind the fender to just use that wiring to connect it up.

Today finished off the wiring for the wing mirror LEDs. My plan of going through the speaker hole worked then I cut a small slit in the grommet that goes into the door for the rest of the loom and ran the two wires through there to meet the side marker wiring, taped up to look factory and there it is. Now I just need to get some LED side markers to match the blinking speed.

So I found a suitable rubber plug to go into the back of the lights.. sort of. It's about the right diameter but just a smidgen too small so it doesn't actually sit in there by itself. To resolve this a couple spots of glue around the edges.

Forum image

Afterwards I got the silicon out, put a bead around the edge where the glass sits and pressed it in. Will let that cure overnight.

I did have a bit of an oh shit moment though, while threading the wires through the rubber plug one of them pulled off the board inside so I had to do some keyhole surgery to get that soldered back on. It worked but I hope no more have that problem..

After finishing up with Formula D I had nothing to do and didn't want to sit around like usual on such a nice day so decided to try and polish out some of the stains that were on the rear pair of Kranze that I have. I did the fronts a little while ago and now they've got stains and shit from sitting around in the damp storage again so it's kind of a futile job but passed the time.

Looks ok from here..

But get closer and still can see the spots

The only way I think to get a perfect mirror finish would be to get them split and machine polished again but... that's not on the cards any time soon.

The afternoon wasn't so busy today so decided to do some more on the dancing LED fogs. Worked out roughly where I'll put the control unit and set to demolishing the plastic storage container purchased to house it. Drilled a few holes for wiring and that'll do!

Now I just need to do some soldering probably tomorrow to connect a few wires and ensure the ones that I have can reach the box properly. Also need to pick up a small switch for inside the car so I can actually turn them on !

Even though I have two other rather old cars floating around one still does need to ensure the most reliable form of transport is taken care of..

When I had my last basic alignment done a little while ago the tech said that the rear toe couldn't be completely perfect because one of the arms was bent! No idea how that happened but figured may as well upgrade them while I was in there!

Now just need to get those installed and get another alignment.. oh and find some more daily wheels!

So recently I sold my Auto Couture wheels that I had and almost sold the tyres that were with them but I picked up these today so I can get a wof.

Forum image

Hyperion (some Japanese made wheel) 19x8.5 / 19x9.5 with very good tyres on. I'll get some 25mm spacers all around as well because it's going to look super sunk in.

Also, as part of a deal I snagged some new front vented fenders that actually fit properly and a different boot wing. Pictures coming soon of those.

Bingo! Stoked as. They have some red coloured mesh in them which is weird so I'll probably paint over that at some stage. And the previous owner painted some of the vent area black which I don't actually mind that much.

Fitted them up, not 100% happy with the fit around the bottom vent, need to somehow get it another couple mm closer to close the door gap to match above. Otherwise the fit is very good. I did have to do quite a bit of trimming at the bottom for the extra vent bits to fit with the side skirts though.

The other part was the wing, Silk Blaze to be precise! Look at all the gunk under the old one. Pulling off the tape was a mission and wrecked the vinyl haha. Oh well it'll be covered by the other wing and/or changed in the future at some stage.

Washed the car and went for a drip dry drive because I'm lazy. Couple pictures of it fitted up. Little hard to do with only one person and due to that the left side is not quite sitting exactly where it should be but it's not going to go anywhere and you'd only notice if you looked close up for ages so it's good enough for now.

Needed to do an oil change on the car, and as I have no flat ground/can't be bothered these days I take it down to my mates shop (YSM Workshop for those in NZ). Also while I was there I had some Megan Racing rear toe arms installed to resolve a problem with rear toe on the right side. The car had been in an accident prior and the adjustment for the toe arm was damaged. There is clear evidence under the car of the accident too so perhaps the repair was quick/average. That means it was crashed in on both sides.. >_<

Forum image
After the arms installed, had it aligned at another friend's shop. At least the steering wheel is pretty much straight now, car is back to doing some odd vibrations and feeling like the wheels are not round so I give up! Probably part of that due to me always buying cheap wheels/tyres haha.. but I'll just use the excuse the car isn't straight due to crashes which could also be a bit true..

I'm not concerned about the safety of the car but I might tweak suspension a little to see if it can get it to ride a little better. Keepin an eye out for UCF31's at the moment anyway..
