Uneven stretch? Whats the cause of it?

I went to get my Falkens stretched on my wheels but the stretch was so uneven that I had them remove the tire from the wheel. I went to 4 shops and they all did the same thing. The tire is 225/35/19 and the wheel is 10.5 wide. The outher tire stetched alittle bit and the inner tire exposed the barrel a good 2 inches. Each shop tried about 3-4 times to get it the other way around but they were not able too and they all suggested I get bigger tires. They tried using the bead blaster on each side of the wheel but still the same results. I spend a good 4 hours trying to get this accomplished. Any suggestions? Sorry no pix. I really wished I brought my camera because I never saw anything like that.

Are they mounting with the face of the wheel facing down? It'll do that if that's the case. More stretch will be on the outside if the face was facing up during mounting, but I haven't seen any shops do that yet.

ive been in the situation where the tire wasnt wide enough for the rim (iirc it was a the old flagship luxury falken tire in 245/35/19 on a 19x12. the problem being that the bead did not stretch far enough to meet the beading edge of the rim. while it is possible to use the wheel/tire in this condition, it's a huge risk factor that you will blow out the tire.

you probably had the same issue. the unevenness happens when one tire cooperates better than the other, since you are forcing the tire to do something it is not designed to do.

there are several ways to solve this issue.

first you can try inflating it beyond safe pressures, i believe we went over 100psi in one sitting... i dont recommend this, as it is very unsafe.

you could use a number of lubricants to help the tire slide towards the rim's bead, but again, only pressure (or some straps) will force the edge of the tire towards meeting the rim's beading.

ultimately, if you want to stay safe, you should move to a wider tire, or different tire, since material and construction will influence the tire's ability to "stretch."

try the trampo tires from japan, they are the best stretching tires ive used, thus far.

Thanks your first post was really helpful. I had them try to mount it on both sides, facing down and up so I dont think that will make a differance. They lubed it up really good but it didnt help. I think I am just going to go with a 235/35 tire instead. I dont want to drive around my 100 mile comutee to work with 100 psi in my tires since I did have two pop on me on the highway in the past lol.

Hey I dunno, I just thought that because my wheels were always faced down and some tires I've had, especially my old ST115's, they would push the tire all the way down and inflate it up, so the side of the tire that was on the upside (the inside of the wheel at the time) would look to have more stretch, this was a 235/35/19 ST115 on a 8.5. I then found that a 225/35/19 gave an even stretch on both sides with the same mounting procedure.

100psi+ is just to get the bead to stretch to the edge, then you back out all the pressure before it explodes. consider it more of a technique than a solution.

how about taking it to an 18 wheeler tire shop.....

thats what I had to do this last time on these continitenals I'm running.

they had this special deal that the use on the monster tires.....and poped it in place.....the contis stretch a little better than the 452's

Certain bead traps on different wheels will affect the overal look of the streched tire. On my amistads the bead traps were even. The tire was streched evenly. On my scaras the trap was different, more streched on the inside. On the fabulous' same case as the scaras. With the mrr's the tire beaded evenly thus the tire strech was even.

The wheels are reverse lipped. Thanks everyone for the replies. Im just going to go trade these for dunlops since thats what I had good experience with. I will post them up in the for sale section.

What wheels are you running? Every manufacturer has a different bead trap design. Or maybe take some pics of what the trap looks like if at all possible. If they are 452's they are harder to strech because of the harder sidewall design. But then again the harder sidewall will help out with a small streched tire on a wide wheel aganist pot holes.

I cant take pics since I had the tire deflatted. The wheel is a Auto Couture supreme wheel. Im sure the stretch I was trying to run can be done but like you said the sidewalls are too stiff on these tires. Im going to go one size up to 235 and using continentals. Thanks guys

i've got a reverse lip on the outside too. i think thats the problem. the normal side lip (stepped on my inside) tends to stretch more. the reverse lip doesnt show up as well.

the stepped side of barrel seem to push the tire the other direction.

Egg and Lex are on the right path. The drop and shape of the inner well has a lot to do with how the tire will "sit" inside the wheel. We've experienced this time and time again. And as mentioned with Amistad's we always had more stretch on the inside than the outside.

There is more force on the outer edge due to the shape of the inner well...ie although it might stretch a little more on the outside, it will stretch all that much more on the inside. It's all proportionate. It's not really just the reverse barrel, it's the angle which leads to the drop and how dramatic the drop is and width of the drop as well. Just like in your picture above, look at the two drops and the difference from what I just pointed out, it'll start to make sense.
