One Ton? Or anyone else cutting springs...

Well, Saturday im gonna cut the factory springs a wee bit until i get my $$ situation recouped and decide what route i wanna take with the suspension. So I wanted to know, what approximately should i cut. Car is a Y33 Cima/Q45 Non-Active

Would 1 full coil give me 1" of drop? or more? 

Rear Fender currently sits dead center at right about 29" and i'd like to get to about 26.5" for the time being. 2.5" rear drop 
Front fender currently sits dead center at right about 28" and i'd like to get it to about 26.5" or 26". 1.5-2" front drop


anyone have any experience with these suspensions and knowing what to cut to get a approximate drop? Im being somewhat conservative with the drop until i get the ride situation settled, see what needs rolled/cut/pulled etc.

what about get your springs compressed?less bouncy and wont kill ur suspension parts

Any drop on stock struts is going to hurt your other suspension components, especially the struts.

of little consequence. 

im concerned only about chopping them shits down a bit until i decide what i want to do.

if cutting isn't your thing, you can always try heat.

if memory serves me correctly, you're in so cal. valley muffler out in the city of industry/west covina area can heat your springs to the ride height you want for $20-25. takes about 10 minutes. rasrx7 referred me there, best $20 i spent! lol.

interesting, maybe ill give them a call tomorrow. My only fear is heat fatigue, breaking a spring under 4500lbs of car.

Wow! I haven't heard of people heating springs so a long time, that is so old school! But it's whatever works right? :D

so far no prob for me..every car ive owned..ive even heated my tein springs to get lower....cuttings cool, but amount of work compared to amount of money spent, its well worth it..but make sure you deal with someone whos done it before...if they do it wrong, 1. the springs will crack if they over heat them 2. if they heat it unevenly, it will lean and come off the perch. Where el went and where i go, louie and their crew at valley muffler have been doing it for years..on all sorts of cars. Especially ones where no spring suspension replacement is offered. if someone tells you that the ride will get bouncy..anything thats lower then what the car is designed for will bounce unless you can find the right shock/stut setup...even then when they blow, ure back to square one...the best thing about heating is that you can tell them when to stop to get it closer to where you want it. when you cut, if you dont cut enough, you gotta to pullit all back out, and if you cut too much...well you know what happens there.. ;)

Heating is a technique that you will find endorsed even by old vintage racers (road racing, at that)... so it's a valid way to go, but ONLY if you find a person/place that knows what they're doing. If you're close to this valley place, might as well have them do it... it also does save you on the headache of R&Ring the susp more than once as you experiment... but if you ARE looking to experiment (and if you have the time and reason to do so), then R&Ring and cutting the springs is more worthwhile... but if not, then yah.. torch 'em

this was done commonly in the 80s (in hawaii) on low rider trucks, that used leaf springs.

My ride has cut springs (done by previous owner :knuppel2:), honestly save up get it done all legit or just get 'em heated like they said. It's a b**** of a bouncey ride, gets so annoying but others love it and so do the :police: and then you'll have to get new setup for when you go to get a new WOF.. Just my opinion.

What is stopping you from saving up $160.00 for springs? I know availability might be the issue, but the funds issue should be in the approachable range.

nothings stopping me. I have a set of teins on the way. But i was just antsy to get the wheels mounted. I dont drive much or far, so I said fuck it. I cut the front today, only cut t othe same spot on the next coil down. So maybe it'll drop 1-1.5" and i'll do about 2-2.5" in the rear.

Im actually just gonna do coils I think. Im over spending outraegous money on cars for the moment. Im doing a brochure for a make-up company and as soon as it pays out im ordering coils. I've jsut been looking at the re-finished Viennas for ever and finally said im putting them no this week.

which is a better route to get more drop outta 1.5" lowered coils ? compressing them or cutting them ?

i cut one coil outta stock springs and it was a waste of time for only 3/4" drop.

well, i can officially say I hate the design of the Y33 front suspension. Lets remove every damn part to get the strut out.

Heres the list of items broke or fucked up during the R&R
Abs Sensor
Stripepd Lugnut and lugnut tool (cheap ebay crap!!! :angry: ) Somehow, while removing the rear wheels the lugnut tool cracked and them slipped on a lugnut and stripped it. I'll deal with that one later. the ABS sensor cracked while removing it. stupid design. Im just gonna replace both. 

the front coil design doesnt allow for much options when cutting them. its either 1.5-2" drop or 4: drop. Knowing that I went with 2" until I just man up and buy coilovers. I was able to match the rears height wise. So It's like this until I buy coils. I was over it early on today and decided the jsut even it out, even if it looks like ass.

looks much better than stock ride height. i hope you get those coilovers sooner rather than later, as your proposed ride height looks even better!
