changed out my jdm turbos for us turbos

so i bought this car with the tt vvti aristo swap in it. problem with the car was that the second turbo wasnt coming on when supposed to. so we decided to switch them for the usdm turbos. reason being is there are cheap and easy to find and also holds alot more boost due to the steel blades compared to the jdm ceramic blades.

so we started on friday night and worked from 10pm-3am. then worked on it some more and finished it up on sat. from 10pm-5am.

when we removed the old turbos and got them off the car, we dissassembled number two turbo and what do you know. the blades on in the intake side of the turbo was great! no scores, chips, no major shaft play, and it spun real nice. so we removed the exhaust side of the turbo and low and behold we found the root of the problem.

no exhaust wheel = no boost. :(

so we got the new turbos on with the permanent ttc mod. all the valves have been taken out by the previous owner of the turbos. we buttoned it up and filled it full of fluids. took it out on its maiden voyage and wow. what a differnce. wish i had a camera to record it. only think left to do is get a dp made. seems to me that the jdm dp's for the aristo has a way smaller flange then the usdm one. its cool though, will be taking it to nandofab to get it fabbed up!

anyways, just blabbing here. just really excited we got it done and running the way its supposed to. just gotta get the ic piping to quit blowing off at 19psi. anyone have any questions about it post up. im bored at work.

Nice!

Did u have to switch anything else besides the Turbo's? are u running the JDM ecu and injectors?

we had to swap the whole assembly. from the manifold all the way to the dp. yea im running the stock aristo vvti ecu and injectors. wouldve went single turbo but its not in my budget right now, thats the reason the usdm turbos went in instead.

put in US injectors, they are bigger, and you can up the boost a bit and still be safe. True Twin kicks in way harder huh!

Now correct me if im wrong... Which iam sure im not... But there is no such thing as a JDM turbo... A turbo is a turbo, it doesnt look different and it doesnt perform different... I dnt want to come off as a flamer... But the whole JDM craze has gone bezerk here in vegas... And has reached the point of it almost being rice... Now i want to give props for doing the conversion.. I have been in several aristos and those are ****in sick... I have a question tho.. Does the stock intercooler interfere with the USDM bumper?? Because i kno that in the US the bumpers, windows, and i beleive lights in some case are different.....

That requires a resistor pack to run the USDM injectors along with a JDM ECU if Im correct????

Very nice! Thats exactly what I wouldve done LoL!!

oh, get a bead roller for the IC pipes and you'll be good ;)

no prob..

The biggest factor would be the steel blades (US) vs Ceramic blades on the JDM versioon 2jz... that will end up sucked out of your engine @ high boost :(

thats what happened to his turbo. Im assuming it was the rear turbo because its a true sequential setup. someone turned up the boost too high and the blades fell apart and out the exhaust :(

stock vs stock, the US 2jz puts out more hp & safer at higher boost because of its turbos and configuration

yeah, but shards of turbine trim shooting out the exhaust are the new trend! come on, everybodies doing it.. hahaha.. are the turbine and compressor trim both ceramic, or just one or the other? i'm sure getting it balanced would solve the potential problem as high rpm vibrations are the most typical cause of a collapsing compressor/turbine wheel..

there is a ton of difference between the usdm and jdm tt supra motors. on the jdm motors the injectors are 440cc HIGH IMPENDANCE injectors. the us ones are 550 cc LOW IMPENDANCE injectors. i believe the cams are different. the vvti that comes in the jdm motors dont have it in the us motors. the turbos are way different. you got two ct20's on the jdm ones and two ct12's on the us ones. the us ones are smaller but have a larger ar on the exhaust side compared to the jdm ones. the jdm ones have a larger inducer and exducer compared to the us ones. also of course the blades are different which is stated in this thread already.

the bumper that i have on my car is the jdm bumper. its slightly smaller the the us bumper length wise. i have no problems with interference with anything. and yes there is a jdm turbo. and yes it does look different and yes it does perform differnt. even the waste gate actuator is differnt

dont know what happened to the rear turbo. motor was put in with 40000 kilometers on the clock. im guessing it happened before we got the front clip. but the number one turbo had some chips off of the exhaust wheel also when disassembled. good thing we caught it now then driving it down the road somewhere in tim buck too.

the differences in the motor that i posted up was for everyone to read. the bottom where its after i quote u was for you to read. its more then the blades that are different.

Turbo's: JDM CT20A ceramic, USDM CT12B steel
turbine size: JDM 60mm/48mm (inducer/exducer), USDM 52mm/44mm (inducer/exducer)
Compressor Size: JDM 62mm/39mm (inducer/exducer), USDM 58mm/39mm (inducer/exducer)
Scroll area (mm^2): JDM 600, USDM 740
A/R ratio: JDM 0.42, USDM 0.53

specs for all yall to read up on.

so what was the point of this thread? just to post info on a 1JZ/2JZ? i don't see the fascination with JDM... the japanese sportscar motors aren't exactly made for longevity seeing how taxes and whatnot go way up on a car with over 30K miles. and spending thousands to have a basically stock replica of a stock car in japan is pointless. just buy the car in japan and ship it back.

no fascination with jdm? so where did bippu style cars come from? and style come from? i posted this thread up because i was excited about fixing my car with a few friends.

heres what i copied and pasted from the bottom of my post i even put the main things in bold for you to read better.

anyways, just blabbing here. just really excited we got it done and running the way its supposed to. just gotta get the ic piping to quit blowing off at 19psi. anyone have any questions about it post up. im bored at work.

i had a car that was bought and shipped over here from japan.i bought of from a friend of mine and built it last year. sold it this year to get the gs that i have now.

I wouldnt waste time rebuilding the jdm turbos when a BETTER, highly upgradable USDM version is available for 200+ bucks

idk wtf your even saying. bippu? no, its vip. bippu is a nub term for americans. the styles come from people, not "japanese domestic market". having a jdm shiftknob, guage cluster, or even a turbo doesn't get you any closer to japan.
idk wtf your even saying. bippu? no, its vip. bippu is a nub term for americans. the styles come from people, not "japanese domestic market". having a jdm shiftknob, guage cluster, or even a turbo doesn't get you any closer to japan.
just to clarify, i wasn't saying that having JDM turbos makes you a JDM ricer or anything. i was just saying how people are ignorant for paying tons of money for stock parts just because they are the counterpart of the japanese platform. wasn't directed toward you. but the bippu thing and not being able to understand what your typing was directed toward you. i do consider myself a purist, but that doesn't make me anyone special. just someone disguisted with it becoming a trend. not trying to fight though.

Although I COMPLETELY agree with you on the "bippu" thing, I care to differ a bit on the other topic. US motors suck..plain and simple and in most cases the Japan "replacements" are an upgrade. Now if you're saying to do it just for the sake of doing it...well, that may seem silly to you and I, but some people just really like to build that way. So what? It's not your car, so what do you care, right? They might not like how crazy I go with every car I build, but I don't care. I build my cars for me. Just like my RB25DET replacing the VH45 in my Q. The Japan motor gives me more horsepower potential for less money than the V8 does. Getting the power on the RB is very easy and the block and head can handle it..even stock. Not to mention, although the V8 sounds nice, the RB's sound like pure sex. I had the same possible predicament as him turbo wise since the the RB25 has ceramic blades as well, but I'm not looking to make ridiculous power on my luxury car. Just maybe 350whp or so...but knowing me that'll probably change. Haha. Anyhow, my point to you is..don't jump the gun so soon and definitely don't force your style opinions (yes, YOUR opinion, not fact) on others. Now if they claim to be your type of style, but are fakin' the funk, then yes, call them out, by all means. No one likes a poser...

well i certainly agree with the fact that most japanese engines are more capable of producing big numbers, but in some cases the longevity is saraficed because they manufactuers know the motors probably aren't going to see milage over 50K. hell, i think you made a good decision by ditching the V8. i love my 5.0L around town for the torque i can utilize, but when it comes to a performance mindset, i've SERIOUSLY considered an RB25/26 with a single turbocharger due to 1) the reduced weight netting better braking, less weight transfer during cornering, closer weight balance (50/50), power/weight ratio 2) fuel milage 3) broad aftermarket 4) ease of fitment 5) modern electronic managment/EFI.. i could go on.. got pics of yours?

definitely not faking the funk. i am not a poser. i dont build cars to show off and take to car shows and compete. i build them for me to see and drive and enjoy. ill take it to a car show so people can see what ive done and talk to people about my pride and joy. but i dont go to shows to win awards and let judges be the person to tell me my car is 1st place. a quote that i use nowadays is this Originally Posted by gOtParTs?

i am not a purist in the vip scene. and ill admit that. but i am a purist in anything and everything that has to do with the automotive industry. i dont care if the **** is jdm, usdm, ukdm whatever. if it works to the level i want it to, ill buy it. doesnt matter if its cheap or expensive. the cheaper, the better for my pocket. i dont cut corners, but i dont overly spend on one part because its cool. if i came off as attacking you BOSOZOKU then i apologize. but like elpresidente said don't jump the gun so soon and definitely don't force your style opinions (yes, YOUR opinion, not fact) on others. i respect that and i believe thats one of the things everyone should understand. a style that is made by the "industry" should be the blank canvas for you to fill.
