The G50
I see way more G50's on the road today than I see of the y33.
It is clear that the general public had a definite attraction to this model.
Can anyone shed some light to the history of this chasis ? what made it popular ? what caused the low resale value ? what were the major problems ?
I know there were some issues with these cars, but were they typical nissan issues or did they have more substantial problems ?

When I was buying my Y33 I was once told that they didn't sell well because of what you could get for the same price or better!!! Don't matter to me though cause at least they cheaper than LSs some of them other models! hahahaha!

one simple answer....infiniti's original ad campaign.
I don't know how many people remember it...but they'd show fields of golden grain or empty roads with only a flash of a car that no one could make out, or with no pics or images of the car at all. Meanwhile, Lexus was showing the q's major competitor, the LS, and all of the luxury and quality that it had.
Couple this with the then sagging us sales generally of the Nissan brand in the US because of a combination of marketing and a generally uninteresting line up of vehicles, and you get the flagship platform of Nissan in the US becoming the victim of its less than interesting related sister vehicles. This is when 240s were "girl" cars and the maxima was outdated.
What's interesting is that my dad who bought a 91 g50 in 1990 actually had his car appraised in 93 and it had gained value from the prior year. 93 was the first year they started a legit ad campaign for the g50.

I don't know according to some the G50 was a very competive vehicle for it's time compared to what you could buy with the same power and options. I too was amazed to find this car being sold for so cheap.

The ads were pretty unique for sure and probably didn't help the cause of selling much. It was a case of concentrating exclusively on selling the image of the new brand, and for most people the reaction was "that's nice, now what about the car".
Reviewers at the time loved the Q though, considering it a strong alternative to BMW (where the LS400 was aimed more at Mercedes). I would expect the reviews sold more G50s than the ads could ever have hoped to.

The G50 was definitely competitive on every level. It's interesting looking back now. I've always like the way the g50 felt on the road....not to soft....you can definitely feel the road a little bit more in a Q than in an LS, which is how i feel about BMW vs. Mercedes. BMWs seem more oriented around blending performance and luxury especially in the flagships. Mercedes seems more oriented around luxury.
So when Infiniti and Lexus attacked the well established imported luxury Sedans, they went after their intended victims by emulating them. The result is that both are very well refined rides but the Q has always seemed less about luxury to me and more about performance luxury, while the LS although a great performer has always seemed more about luxury.

I have an original VHS from Infiniti illustrating the new Q (Y33). Infiniti sets up a table with potential buys and asked what they want in an Infiniti Q45.
It all black in white till the end when it becomes color and there is a Black Q45t (97) parked at some park.
pretty cool vid nonetheless
