anyone else thinking that 20" is becoming the new VIP standard ?
That all depends on how far you wish to go with modification. I'd only personally go 20" if I planned to radius the fenders. Other than that...19".
I've been saying this for over a year. The choices of 20" tire sizes are terrific now. I've had 20s on my GS for years, and frankly they look small to me now.

The idea is to be able to get super low ride height but still have clearance to turn..which you wouldn't have right now unless you were to radius your fenders. 20's are the CL standard...not the VIP standard..don't get those two things confused.
I have 20s and I'm considering going back to '19s! Cheaper tires and can ride and park lower! Although '20s fill the wheel gap very nicely!!! Also '20 prevent me from pushing the ride height up front!

I say rock 19's hell even 18's and get that whip LOW!!!! Jake
19" would be the biggest for me...and like Gao Jian says maybe even soem 18" and ride lower.
I wouldn't worry bout whatz mainstream, (20 the new 19 or 15 the new 10). Do what you like. I'm on 19 and happily so, but i would rock 20s if i were on bags. Hell, i'm a gonna bring it down on 19 just a bit more!
18s and ride slammed well thats what i do anyways
Nah, I think the 19" and 20" are well divided still - 19" wheels still have their place, so I don't think I'd consider the 20" a replacement for 19".

Theres just nothing like seeing a Big body sedan with wide tilted wheels driving about 1 inch off the ground. The pressance it makes is what its all about. People will let you in their lane just so they can get a better look at the ride.

I like big lipped wheels, and I think going up another inch takes attention away from the lip, but that's just me, and again, I could be saying the total opposite if I owned some 20's.

There's another item of interest you guys aren't thinking of. DISH. You can get more dish out of an 18" than a 19" and the same goes for 19" to 20". Try looking up wheel specs from manufacturers to see what I'm referring to. I know not everyone loves the dish, but enough of us are to make it a subject to bring up.
The size of the car really determines the size of the wheels for me. Smaller VIP cars like Majesta, Y32, G50 can do 18s. Even 1st gen Aristo/GS300. Stance and fitment are key with 18"! I think larger cars like Y33, F50, LS etc need 19s. I'd rather ride low on 19s than run 20s IMO. The 19/20 stagger looks hot on some cars, but I think 19s will remain the most popular.

20s = radiused fenders or tucking lots of rim. Look at the mags, see how many cars you see going flush with standard fenders and 20s...

You can get a lower look w/o bags and they will be large enough to fit the wells w/o having to roll the lips..
20's are the new 19's only beacause the cars the newer cars are getting bigger....so wheel size is relative to how big the body size is.
On the F50s and 30/31 I see them run 22s alot! I think 20s fit my car pretty good IMO!

I think 19's are ideal on most cars here. But for the brand new model cars I would go with 20's. 20's on older cars just looks too big in my opinion
20's are the new 19's only beacause the cars the newer cars are getting bigger....so wheel size is relative to how big the body size is.
No, it's WHEEL WELL size, not car size. My Jag is a big car, but it has smaller wheel wells than many newer cars of it's size. So it's 19's for me until I radius the fenders.
this is the reason i bought 18's
on certain cars, i don't see the body getting low enough on 20". i think presence and the overall look dictates what size wheel to use. i like being low while driving and my 18's allow that. i am considering 19's though, just to see how i like it.
Ive noticed in some of the VIP mags that some of the peeps are rolling 20's now which if fitted correctly like on Pancakes Y33\Q look sik but I still believe 19's are the standard. But around here 20" tires are cheaper and more abundant than 19" I would think this would be true everywhere is it?
you guys forget, it's the size of tire u run with 20", not the wheels. u can be get just as low as 19" if you run 30 series on 20", it's the same diameter as 19" on 35 series.

DUBS got popular on the vans in Japan. And we can thank DUB for that... at least their rims can be bought deep and wide.

this is assuming that the 19" and 20" have both the same width. that's like saying it depends on the car. dur dur
semi accurate...depends on wheel width
it depends on the car size. 18s on a 2nd gen GS is way too small. And the wheel tends to disapear because of the rear bulging fenders. But to cars that are wider and flater, like later years of LS, President and Jagaur XJ, 18s will look ok. But 19s will be great. Even the new LS, 19s look too small on it. 20s sits just right on the LS430. So I think its about the body type. Just like the 300c. Ive seen 21s and 22s on the LS430 and it looked perfect. I woudnt rock 20s on a GS because the body is too narrow. It takes away from the car.

I just can't slam it when parked (nor do I care to). For that matter, 19s look even smaller to me when those cars on 'bags are slammed. Top-to-bottom looks fine (wheels are buried in fender w/ either 19s or 20s anyway), but the front-to-back dimension looks too small (big visual gaps at 9:00 and 3:00 when viewed from the side profile). Just my personal preference, I guess. And don't get me started on CL...
Not just about the turning, but its about keeping it flush. On 19s you are 1/2" lower at tsuraichi compared to 20s. The trend in vipstyle right now is all about being low. Those on 20s are either tucking rim, or have radiused fenders to allow them to be on the ground, yet flush.
a big reason why I like to play with 20" is because of my body kit-car. the body kit made the car look bigger and the 19" I had just wasn't doing it for me.
to me the standard is something other than stock! some cars fit 20's nicely while some older cars look like a r/c car. whatever floats your boat
Depends on the car size, 20" for the look/style, 19" for a little bit of riding comfort.

if you read my post i said "its all about keeping it flush" The top of the rim of the 19 is lower, so the 'flush' point is lower If you are tucking the wheels into fenders, then yes... it doesnt matter if its 19 or 20.

I don't think he truly gets it. But what Dom is stating (and has been stating) is accurate. I like the look of a flush car riding low way better than a tucked car and I also appreciate the ingenuity and skill taken to achieve the flush look in each given situation, more so of course with radiusing.
I personally like the 19" wheels since they just looked at home on my G and people always thought they were 20" anyways hahahahahaha but even at 19" and bagged I would scrape like crazy, to the point where I wanted to weld some scrape plates on the frame so I could at least throw colorful sparks while riding low hahhahahahaha

I just don't know many people who drive their cars that low, not even VIP guys. Actually, most guys I know on Air actually drive their cars higher than mine is set on coilovers. Of course, parked, with the car slammed on air, you could pretty much bury either 19" or 20" in the fender easily; especially the rear. I suppose you could get into the fender radiusing you guys talk about, which would even the front & rear out from the side view when the car is all the way down, but I would think it would look a bit dorky with the car at a higher "driving height." It seems like you're implying that you can run a lower offset with a 19" versus a 20". I've been building wheels for over a decade, I just don't see that given comparable tire dimensions in the two diameters. Maybe I am too old. Or too white. Or both.
IMO there is no other option. Flush means tyres are tucked and rim is almost touching the fender. "flush" with a fender gap is an oxymoron To put it in a real world example, I am currently riding with about a half inch between rim and fender on the rear, maybe 1.5" on the front, with 18s. With 19s in the same offset i would actually have to raise the car or increase camber and tuck, because the lip would hit my fender (even though its rolled). Right now the only reason it works is because the tyre is stretched to avoid the fender. Actually if i go 1/2" lower the rim would be slightly tucked, but at this height it pokes a little Radiusing fenders is probably not going to take off in the US, because like you said it would look dorky with airsus raised for driving. It only really works if you have one fixed height that the car will always be at; but since most people who have reached that level of modification will also be on air
See I plan to radius to run larger diameter wheels (20" versus 19") yet still have the ride height I want. Being on air doesn't mean you ride high. Some airsus set-ups allow for running stiffer through adjustable struts. Or by running on coilovers with bags..in which many coilovers have lots of adjustability in compression/rebound. With some set-ups yes, it won't work too well, but if you're planning to do more of what some of us are..you make the right decisions in your air set-up before hand. I do realize that I won't be able to ride SUPER low like many of the guys just on coils in Japan, but our streets do not allow for such fun. Nor do the abundance of speedbumps everywhere. If there were none of these..I wouldn't need air and would still run coilovers. On purpose I am getting aero which doesn't hang down low so I can drive with a lower stance.
Yeah, but you do have to drive higher than when you are parked. So if parked = lip kissing the (radiused) fender, you would only be able to drive 1" higher than that before it starts looking dorky. Can you get that sorta control with air? Or do you plan to park tucked, drive flush?
anyone else thinking that 20" is becoming the new VIP standard ?
Not really. I think it depends on the vehicle. For example, the new LS460's and M35/45's have STOCK 19's which tells me the wheel well can probably accept a 20~22 with the right tire and the car will not look ridiculous even in stock form (no kits or nothing). Now try putting a 20 in wheel on a 1st gen GS300 or on a 2000 or older q45 and the car will compleatly look ridiculous. Even with a skinny ass tire, the wheel well was designed to hold a 16 in wheel.... Hope I made my opinion clear. (^_^')>

But to me driving height is where it's at. For show purposes I can always bring out the camber a bit to level the playing field...but ultimately I prefer to drive flush...not drive extra poked.
yas, thats why im going 19s!
depends on the chasis. for most cars, 19s is max. but for ucf30/31 id say 20's are a fit,
when i had 20's all around on my gs the front tires buried themselves on the front of the wheelwell and i still wanted to go lower. i actually cracked my wheelwell just behind the headlight:pat: they also rubbed on the top of the wheelwell while driving straight going over bumps. that was when i knew that i needed 19's for the front:shrug:
when lowering my car the rim BARELY clears the fender. if i were to go with a 20 in the same offset it would mean that the top rim would be 1/2" higher and wouldnt clear the fender. you could camber more to get it to tuck but im maxed out. i want to go 20's but the car wouldnt sit as low, however at ride height it would look more slammed because i would tuck more tire. the thing is i hate driving around with my front barely tucked when you see bmw's tucking at stock height. but i always drive with my rear almost tucking rim.

i personally like 20's - for the fact that I can tuck tire and still be able to drive around everywhere. alot of the guys on air ride high and slam it when they are parked. 19's help achieve this look bc it enables them to dump their sh*t to the floor. not my thing i guess and it looks kinda wierd to me when its all jacked up while they are driving. i like how 20's enable me to tuck tire yet be high enough off the ground to not limit the places i can go. only bad thing is I cant be as aggressive in my F offsets to avoid fender damage.

dayam. airless and about 50's or 60's ^^^^^^^^ I wonder when the line is going to be crossed between monster truck and donk. I can just hear it on the radio: "MONSTER-MONSTER-MONSTER DONKS!!! This friday and saturday night only at the rodeo grounds! Tickets available at Circle K, the Chinese Liquor Store and WalMart. Also tallest truck show and low rider competition. COME AND SEE HOW THEY CRUSH THE COMPETITION!! MONSTER DONKS!" That would be the biggest white, black and brown meeting beside state prision.
