in the spirit of shawnthemonster's previa, i put some R33 wheels on my new previa

Those didn't stay on long though... running SC430 stock wheels now.
got the car friday night... slammed and shod it saturday afternoon :)
Gonna run the Q's air components (mostly just the valves and compressor actually) on the previa in the next few days in hopes of getting it riding on air soon

Oh yah the WTB part (since I don't think most people check the WTB forum): does anyone have a spare set of stock previa front struts? And anyone have a spare previa rear end, preferably with axles? Brakes and actual diff pumpkin not needed... just the housing and axles.

nice.  looks like you got one in good condition (at least from what i can see from the outside). can't wait to see what you do with it.

btw, what's up with the q, since you're transferring its suspension to the previa?

sickness. it does look nice without the tint. i might have the front stock struts in 2 weeks depending on a shipment im waiting for.  ;) what kind of car is that in the background of the front view(burgandy color)?

yah 59K original miles... drives like it too.. super smooth and solid. Paid quite a bit under 3000 for it, but it's not a perfect car, but all good for its purpose, which is to be used to haul stuff around in, go on road trips with friends, and serve as a test bed for previa parts. The air parts i'm raping from the Q are just the easily-replacable stuff like the tank and compressor and valves, etc... which I'm changing on the Q anyway. I'd like to get the prev air setup done soon since the stock front struts aren't too happy with riding at like 4" down from stock >HAHA<... bouncy bouncy... but it was a good experiment, and I got all the measurements I needed to make the air parts now.

Deiciding on a kit to get right now... just want to keep it simple on the outside... kit, refresh body and paint, and monoblock wheels or the like.

It actually used to be a semiconductor manufacturing co... but the walls have been taken down, and if i remove the drop ceiling it's actually pretty high. but yah, part of the fun is the fact that the place feels like a cozy office instead of a barren warehouse

off topic a bit but, how much did your garage cost? or if you don't want to reveal that, how much does an average actual garage cost? (the building, not tools etc)

BUT... the problem areas are not the headers (well, just a slight tad on two runners), but the oil pan. an oil pan guard will be necessary (and i wonder if there's a market for one, cuz i've never seen them in any of the estima mooks):

yes, im interested on what you did for suspension first for that drop.. looks nice, loving the sc rims on it, and the r33 wheels have a good offset on it..

That thing looks like its in great shape. Could it be any cleaner on the underside?

Yup just cut springs with stock struts/shocks... and let me tell you, you don't want to go any lower than prob around 2.3" all around with the stock units. The rear springs actually have no prob staying in even with the stock length shocks... at up to 3.5" down. The front spring rate changes too much past 2.3" to offer an even decent ride. Hmmm, and too thin a profile tire also doesn't help... cuz we gotta remember that the front ends are actually very light on these cars, being that they are, literally, mid-engined. Anyway, waiting on some air parts to arrive, and hopefully i can source some stock front struts as cores to modify to minimize my downtime before swapping over to air.
Mark: you wouldn't want the front to go any lower if you saw it in person... it's like QUITE low in front.. the rear just got a tad higher after i totally stripped the rear out this past weekend though.. >HAHA<

that scraping on the oil pan is scary!  what kind of headlights are those?

thats correct.

Reconsidering the whole front end swap... I really like the profile/side view of the van with the oem headlights.. the way they are curved and wrap back around. it makes the front end look more blunt (except for the oem usdm zenki front bumper that juts way out). Might just sell off the LS400 headlights and stick with oem in the front. we shall see. Yah, the oil pan scraping is a little frightening.. but it's good motivation for me to get the suspension together quicker.

van...you should make a shield for the oilpan and other low hanging components...... i would get one for sure.

just fab one outta sheet metal, make a good size underbody shield. then go off roading! 

hey, i cut my front springs today.. just 1 coil.. didnt do much. except made the ride alot softer. so now im going to cut another coil off the front, and go on ahead and cut 2 coils off the rears. the ride isnt that bad so far.. hahahah

The more i work on the previa, the more props i must give to those crazy estimas i see from japan... it takes quite a bit of custom fabrication to go extra low and extra wide on these cars... of course you'd never realize that just looking at pics from mags, so I have even more new-found respect for a lot of those insane estimas i see in pics

1-TON: What size tires are on those SC wheels in post #18? And are you happy/staying with that wheel & tire combo? 

I'm trying to get an idea of what 18's with 225/45-18's will look like if I go that route...

i dont have a previa but i do have a 225/45/18"s  volks ce28 on my mpv...with that tire spec it is still on the safe side even loaded with 7 people  plus luggages i would be weary if you go down to a 40 series tires

thanks,, its a working project as you know aftermarket stuffs for wagon/mini-van dont exist on this side of the pond :-\ 

I went with two "extremes" on the previa to see how it'd look with the different sizes... so the fronts are 215/35-18 and rears are 235/40-18s, all on 18x8s. So what I have learned: the stretched 215/35s look awesome, BUT only since the front is sliggity slammed... but ride is harsh, cuz the van does weigh quite a bit. Rears are a bit meaty, but that is good if you're not going too low; it helps fill up the wheelwell a bit, and does give you a bit of extra cush. Overall conclusion: Best compromise for looks and ride would be 225/45-18s imo, on at least 8" wide wheels... ideally 8.5" to 9.5" width. 

Some more previa facts: engine sits really low relative to the chassis... Besides an oil pan guard, I'm also looking at making some motor mount shims to lift the drivetrain up a tad.. I think i measured my oil pan clearance to be about 2.8" recently. Granted, that's with ~23" OD tires, so with better-sized tires, and about 1/2" up in ride height, I should potentially have closer to 4.1" clearance, which is way more than enough. But even at the current height, its position, relative to the front axle line, is such that it's not really an issue... yet. Also, to get the rear to REALLY go down would require a little frame notching... it's not difficult or unsafe though. 

and oh yah shawn: I believe I have found an awesome IRS solution that has got me quite hyped! I'll prob start sourcing the parts to put it together semi-soon.. I just gotta make sure I don't start modifying a car I'm getting this weekend so I can keep my ADD in check and concentrate on one thing at a time...! But I think you will be interested... cuz you might find that flaring the previa is not gonna be TOO easy (esp to run those wide wheels). 

van, i might be interested in buying a set of the motor mount shims if you make them. let me know how they turn out. also, i'll email the pics u requested sometime next week. just been busy. great information. thanks

oneton....i would love to camber my rear wheels so please get 'er done ;) i have fender flares tho so i will very easly flare but with some camber i can get some wild wheels. :D

For those looking to go low low... your first victim-to-the-road will be the center plastic splash shield. Hmmm, gonna get under the car for a closer look-see sometime soon, but I'd have to say it's prob a good idea to remove the splash shield no matter what if you're gonna bring the car down. As for the IRS... it's VERY doable... i guess i'll try and get an idea on parts pricing to see if it's a viable swap for other people, or if it's only worth doing as a one-off mod

Yah, I gotta keep my mind focused on one thing at a time... got another car to play with last week, and I gotta admit I've been neglecting the previa since then... but yes, back to previa for now! I'll get back under the prev again soon and see about those motor mount shims and oil pan guard. I'm actually waiting for my short stroke struts to get built right now... goal is for ride height to be about 1/2" above where it is now in the front (cuz honestly, I think it's too low right now), while still maintaining stock-like cushiness, and being able to sliggity slam it till the xmember/frame touches ground. 

you want it higher? whats the height now? (?pics?). i will have mine lover than what im riding now....but as for a driving height its fine. im still waiting for thr roberuta cups but i will only really use those to give me some jack up space.

they are LS400 lights (he said it a bunch of posts back)

measurement... from ground to top of front wheelwell is 23.25". A little too low imo, esp since with better-sized (i.e. more correct sized) tires, a great deal of the sidewall will be tucked. So for ride height, I'd ideally want the axle center-to-wheelwell distance to be about 1/2" greater than what it is now. Then, with larger profile tires, the actual front of the car, and the oil pan, etc. will be about another 1.5" up, which actually puts the pan and engine xmember into pretty safe territory.

so what are you going with wheel and tier wise..... right now i have 18's with a tire height of 225 front and 235 rear.... i was thinking of going 245 all around, what do you think....and whats the word with the rear camber situation?

I'm going to get some 19s (probably x9)... and prob just run 225s all around. Not trying to fit max rubber under my prev, so I think that is a decent size. If you're going to run the flares, and 9/10 wheel setup, you should just go staggered tires, too. something like a 235f/255r if you want more meatiness... or 225/245 if you want more stretch.
Haven't had too much time to think more about the rear irs lately... though I did sort of figure out how to mount the subframe assy to hang the irs components... gotta work with the oem rear panhard bar bracket that's welded to the frame. It actually ends up being a very good mounting point. 
BTW, how high is your front fenderwell off the ground?
