50 Cent, "Curtis" (Interscope) and Kanye West, "Graduation" (Def Jam)
 Hip-hop's latest battle between two of its biggest egos — Kanye West and 50 Cent — has been building like a title fight in Vegas. Before the Tuesday release of their respective CDs, "Graduation" and "Curtis," 50 challenged West to a televised debate, called him a "worker bee" while describing himself as a "boss," and vowed to retire if West outsold him during their debut week. In response, West has mostly downplayed Fiddy's bluster, re-channeling it as added publicity for his own release. The two share a Rolling Stone magazine cover posed nose-to-nose, evoking the great showdowns of our time.
 If the contest was being judged solely on artistic vision rather than Soundscan tallies, however, West could claim a landslide victory. "Graduation" blends a different set of musical influences than West's past two efforts, 2004's "The College Dropout" and 2005's "Late Registration." Drawing from Daft Punk and Coldplay to loping, back-porch soul and '80s-era electro-disco rhythms, "Graduation" still sounds like a logical step forward. Yet "Curtis" sounds like Fiddy is standing in place, with the familiar bruising basslines and slick, synth-heavy productions that have transformed the former drug dealer into one of the top-selling recording artists of any genre.
 As on his previous releases, West measures his overflowing arrogance with self-conscious dollops of doubt, humor and vulnerability. Meanwhile, Fiddy's outsized cockiness sounds like a comfortable artist repeating himself, afraid to tinker with his winning formulas.
 To wit, on the radio-ready track "Good Life," featuring the digitally enhanced singing of T-Pain, West takes some of his adversary's own advice and paraphrases a line from Fiddy's 2003 smash "In Da Club": "50 told me go head switch your style up/ And if they hate, then let 'em hate and watch the money pile up."
 The so-called "hate" West has received for his award-show outbursts, preppy fashion choices and unfiltered honesty results in a lot of explaining on his new album. On the haunting "Can't Tell Me Nothing," West alludes to his infamous "Bush hates black people" post-Hurricane Katrina comment: "I'm just saying how I feel man/ I ain't one of the Cosbys, I ain't go to Hillman," before speaking about himself facetiously, "I guess the money should've changed him/ I guess I should've forgot where I came from."
 To avoid seeming soft and indecisive, elsewhere he undercuts apologies with knowing brashness. On the addictive "Barry Bonds" featuring Lil Wayne, West boasts: "Top five MCs you gotta rewind me/ I'm high up on the line, you gotta get behind me/ but my head so big you can't sit behind me."
 By disc's end, on the captivating "Big Brother," West even dares bite the hand the feeds him, detailing the mild beef but ultimate reverence he has for his label boss Jay-Z.
 Neither self-deprecation nor humility is part of Fiddy's equation. He's more concerned about squashing rivals, real and imagined ("My Gun Go Off," "I Still Kill"), highlighting his street pedigree and reminding us of his bottomless wealth.
 The disc is mostly standard-issue gangsta talk that only in moments recalls vintage Fiddy such as "Wanksta" or "P.I.M.P." For example, on the menacing funk of "Fully Loaded Clip," Fiddy takes aim at rap/R&B elite who've gone soft, snickering: "When Jay and Beyonce was um-um kissing/ I was cooking 1,000 grams in my kitchen/ When Nas was telling Kelis, "I love you, boo"/ I was shining my nine, you know how I do." And over the deep bass thuds of "I Get Money," which features a classic Audio Two sample, Fiddy gloats: "They callin' me cocky/ I come up out the jeweler, they callin' me Rocky/ It's the ice on my neck man, the wrist and my left hand/ bling like BA-LOW, you like my style."
 As much as Fiddy banks on ruthless rhymes and nouveau riche bragging, he also fancies himself a rugged sex symbol. Hence the obligatory cuts that reveal his sensitive thug side, notably, "Amusement Park" and "Peep Show," the latter featuring a lewd verse from Eminem. However, the tracks capture little of the magic of past winners such as the touching "21 Questions" or the seductive "Candy Shop."
 And when Fiddy enlists Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for "Ayo Technology," Robin Thicke on "Follow My Lead" and *****cat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on "Fire," it feels like a rapper in a rut desperate to maintain his pop stranglehold. The songs aren't tough listens by any means, but Fiddy is going the easy route to appeal to the masses.
 Ill-advised collaborations detract from West's "Graduation" as well. "Drunk and Hot Girls," an exasperated dis of club floozies featuring Mos Def, has a grating and humorless hook. And "Homecoming" includes an unremarkable chorus sung by Coldplay's Chris Martin. Still, West's miscues result from a risk-taking spirit that Fiddy lacks. For that reason alone, West should claim the title of hip-hop's most successful egomaniac.
 CHECK OUT THESE TRACKS: The drum kicks of Fiddy's "I Get Money" are meant to rattle trunk speakers, while West shows that it's OK for a rapper to express paralyzing insecurity and dogged ambition in the same breath on "Big Brother."

kanye is a good rapper.  I know he got skills.  But if only he can keep his mouth shut and stop crying at award shows.  I dont like how he cries and bitches like a little school girl. Messes his image.

I could care less about his actions outside of the Industry, as long as he produces music true to the genre and not trendy bullshit.

never liked 50 sounds like he has down syndrome. especially in his movie when i think after he got shot and he took of those braces he was making a demo and he was rappin. me and my friend was bustin up hard when we heard that part and we still kept laughing in the rest of the movie. i just first saw that movie a month ago and we still make fun of it. but kanye makes nice beats.

man i've never touched a west album and probably never will. i'm not the biggest 50 fan either. but the only thing they're being compared on is ego. i wouldn't even consider them in the same genre. 50's gangsta, west is hip-hop gone pop. and i think it's obviously 50 who stays more true to what his niche is. lyrically (from what i HAVE heard) of course west is gonna win, but thats not what 50s tryin to do, thats what you want to hear. who's got more money? thats who's more sucessful at what they do.

hip hop is hip-hop whether it be gangster rap or not, When you rap about being gangsta then talk about how you wanna help your woman relax then talk about how much money you got, doesn't sound too gangsta to me. I don't mind gangsta rap, not big on it but whatever. 50 doesn't stick on his niche, he is all over the board. let alone his lyrical talent lacks that of most gangsta rappers. I would prefer to hear lyrical skilled rappers over garbage money concerned music. Everybody wants to be "gangsta" now b/c it seems "cool" that's the image people feed into so o'course it sells money. It still comes down to people easily being influenced by what they see. I bet you half of 50's fans are women any way. You'll be surprised how many would date a guy if he looked like a monkey but was cut.

Most of you know you would be upset if something you felt was less quality than what you produce beat out of a decent spot at a show.

I think there both whack and most new music today is whack.  I try to listen to all the new shit and try to give it a chance but if you only have 5 songs out of 17 tracks its a waste of time.  But if i had to choose both are about equal to me.

AMEN!  Couldn't have said it better myself.  I was going to say I'll take choice #3...haha.

Kanye is definitely a diva, and definitely has a huge ego, but at least he can admit it. He also approaches relevant issues, uses new styles, creative beats, and has talent as a producer (more so than a rapper, I'd say). I rarely like his flow, but at least it changes, so I'll give him creativity points once again.
 
50 Cent has been using the same formula since Get Rich or Die Tryin' -> inform everyone that you have a lot of money, you spend a lot of it on women, jewelery, cars, and you have a lot of guns that you use to threaten people when you're in the 'hood'. Every song is non-stop bragging, pure and simple, there is absolutely no depth to it. If "I Get Money" was nothing but that loop, the song's meaning wouldn't change. It might even be better because apparently Fiddy is getting so drunk off his success his speech is slurring more than ever. What started out as a novel idisyncrasy has become nothing but irritating and frustrating, especially when combined with the mindless subject matter.
Every song sounds the same, and it's all about the same things: money, bitches, cars, and violence. It's everything I hate about rap.
Even Scott Storch's amazing library of variations on the same beat can't save Fiddy IMO.

if i had to pick, i'd go with kanye hands down.. because 50 sucks ass at rapping and the reason why he hit it off on his first album was because of Dr. Dre and interscope. He also corrupted a lot of young kids acting like wankstahs and shit. i also hate seeing kids at the mall sporting fake G-Unit spinner necklaces. i like kanye west style of music producing and making beats.

Kanye's new album is killin it right now.  His music sounds nothing like whats out, none of that pop lockin, droppin, crank this superman, bay bay, crap thats floodin the radio. Just good soulful hip hop. I agree that he is a bit cocky and arrogant, but his music is great, a breath of fresh air in the hip hop game.

Kanye has alot of sampled stuff on his album from like MJ and a few other old school R&B Hip Hop singers and its not that great.  Kinda reminds me of Puff daddy and 50 OMG he needs to get back to the hard stuff not the soft stuff.  But i think Kanyes album will sell more then 50s HAHAHAHA!

kanye outsold 50 by a f*cking landslide, supposedly by 600,000 copies.

in my opinion, i'm glad that kanye pulled it off. i'm really sick of even hearing 50's stuff, so i hope that he stays true to his word and steps down for a few years.

with the exception of west and a few other artists, i stick to more underground shit. so much better than the stuff that gets heavy rotation on the radio.

on the cool... i don't really cut for either of them. but when it comes down to it i'd rather listen to something about gettin money, cars, women, etc. than smoebody whining about so called "relevant issues". they're not relevant to me; and i definately don't care who the president likes or who's more popular to a bunch of teenage girls. thats not what music is for. and in my opinion its ALL image anyway, good or bad. these ppl are not what they say they are 99% of the time. so if your into politics and all sensitive and stuff, jam some kanye. i'ma jam somethin about flossin, pimpin, and gettin money (not 50 though).

Kanye leads 50 Cent in early album sales

50 Cent may be getting hip-hop's equivalent of a gold watch next week. Early reports have Kanye West beating 50 in their much-hyped battle of album sales: West's "Graduation" is on pace to sell about 575,000 to 700,000 its first week out, while 50 Cent's "Curtis" is on track to do 550,000, according to Billboard magazine.

As of day one, Kanye had sold 437,000 copies to 50's 310,000, according to Nielsen Soundscan.

Both albums came out Tuesday, and a confident 50 Cent famously announced that he would retire if West outsold him in first-week sales.

"I just don't view him as competition based on our previous sales histories," 50 Cent told The Associated Press last month.

But it looks as if 50 underestimated the power of West, and perhaps, overestimated his own appeal.

"I don't think it's helped 50 that so many of these prerelease singles that have come out have fizzled on the charts right away," said Jonathan Cohen, Billboard's senior editor. "There were street date changes. It has just not been a good run-up to this record for him."

Meanwhile, Cohen says West is having a more "charmed" experience, despite his recent tantrum at the MTV Video Music Awards after going home empty-handed.

"These tantrums he goes on, these outlandish comments he makes, they don't really hurt him," said Cohen. "If anything, they've got more people interested in what he's all about."

Still, don't finalize those retirement party plans for 50 just yet; there are several days to go before a final tally is determined, and he could catch up and overtake West.

"It is a projection," Cohen said of the initial sales predictions. "It can very easily deviate."

And there's still the potential of a third-party candidate winning the race: country superstar Kenny Chesney, who's "Just Who I Am: Poets and Pirates" also was released on Tuesday, is so far on pace to sell 400,000 to 550,000 copies.

Don't forget that 50 is all about his money and he doesn't care if he's a snitch, wanksta, or how many fans he has, as along as he's making that guap that's all that matters to him. alright, i know people feel that kanye's a bit of a priss, and 50 is just, well, too overly-thuggish. but i'll tell you all this: i went out and copped both graduation and curtis because i'm reviewing both of them for my school newspaper. kanye's album is something COMPLETELY different from anything that's mainstream. other than El-P and the rest of the Definitive Jux crew, I haven't heard this much electronica in a hip hop album in all my life. kanye really pulls it off.

but when i put 'curtis' in, it feels like i'm listening to 'the massacre part II,' you know?

I dont think kanye is some sort of hip hop genius .Just about all of his beats are sampled from other artist. It sounds like he just throws shit together and hopes it all flows well. I like the Stronger song only becuse i like daf punk. I never thought he was a good flowing rapper. R.A.P is Rythem Agressive Poetry. He sounds like he's just "agressivley" reciting what he writes down (Poetry). But he lacks the rythem and flow when he is "rapping" with his beats...I  dont know if im making sence? I like it when rappers actually have the lyrical skills to be able to spit bars flowing with the beat.
One thing i do like about him is that he deffanetly has the Lux trip hop look or what ever look that is goin for him..He is always pushing his style..which i like.

I never noticed Common before until he was on Dave Chaplle.I bought Common's new album and I must say he's now one of my favorites.I like he how flows and the beats are bad ass,which Kanye probally produced.but to me the hip hop kings are Wu-Tang Clan!

i think 50 took a big hit and could probably get outsold. he basically got handled by game and cam. probably cost him cred, so now all he has is the mainstream. of course  this is from the last i heard. don't really follow these guys.

I think both artist are ok. For me, I am a beat person then lyrics. Both have talent otherwise they wouldn't be successful. All this beef of who's best is pretty dumb. Music was created from the style of the artist. Each artist has their own tune and style. On using ol' school beats, who doesn't do that. Those were good beats. Then again, when you got money like that, you want to make more and more no matter what. Its all a hustle.:shrug:

Remember what album sales means, it doesn't mean that they have the most talent or skill. Nelly, MC Hammer, Black Eyed Peas, etc... I mean, come on. And most of the records are being bought by teens, like they know what's good! Kanye is a good producer, even though he samples EVERYTHING, sampling is a original part of Hip Hop but it shows lack of real musical ability IMO. And his image thing is SO for the kids, the teddy bear logo, the wrestling shoes with the jeans tucked in, backpack, flipped collar, get the F@#$ outta here! 50 does talk about the same thing but how many artists have something new to say on each song. Jay Z talks about the same thing, so did BIG and Pac. It's about wordplay, how creative can you be in saying what it is you're saying. Kanye needs to shut his mouth and get off his own dick because he can't rhyme. Just produce albums and stay out of the spotlight. I know, great chance of that happening, I can dream right? 50 can just keep doing what he's doing but when someone takes his spot, he'll fall back like everyone else...

Kanye will outsell 50 but he's supposed to in my opinion. Some of the best Hip Hop groups of all time have never even gone platinum, EPMD, KRS, Rakim, Kool G Rap, Ghostface, etc...

Well, 900,000+ (Kanye) to 600,000+ (50¢) is definitely a margin, but not a blow out considering the highest sales before that of this year was from Linken Park who also had 600,000+ album sales.

I have no problem with someone confident or even cocky as long as they can back it up....Kanye West can certainly back up a lot of his claims as an artist. He's a VERY talented guy.

A lot of people seem to be referring to Kanye's "whining" to that of the VMA's where he was pissed that MTV put Britney on stage when they KNEW she was going to suck ass. That, in itself, was wrong to do. I knew Britney was going to suck balls, everyone knew it, and the corporate heads at MTV knew it. Yet they'd rather have her, basically, bash herself when they could've put real talent on the stage like Kanye West. So yeah, I agree with Kanye, "FUCK MTV" if they're going to do shit like that. It's called MUSIC TELEVISION for a reason, right?  But they decide to put suck ass's on stage and show gay reality shows all day long. WHAT THE FUCK.  MTV may as well change their name.

Did some checking around and I see your point but he is entitled to his own opinion. He does  better work than most Rap artist alive right now. So whether he is whiny are not I don't care as long as he keeps producing good music and not that "crank dat whiny bitch while pop lock droppin" crap!

They are 2 different styles that should never cross paths...usually have fans that dont cross paths, so it was a stupid contest to start with.

If you really listen to what the hype was about you'll recognize it was never about style but about Big name artist in the industry dropping albums on the same date. Like Pac and Biggie dropping albums on the same date.

Even though Pac's style was different than biggie's they still compared them b/c of who they were.

50 Cent pretty much nailed it when he said it's nice that they can make up a huge rivalry like that because it makes so many sales, but in the end it's Def Jam vs. Interscope.

My biggest gripe about the Rap today is that people are making it big with no talent. It was a minor deal back in the 90's when I really liked music but now it is mostly tealent less artist dominating the industry b/c of MUSIC not b/c of any real talent. They should just start putting out instrumentals then if it really needs to be about the Music only.

Timbaland also samples.

Who doesn't sample..it's not about sampling itself, it's how you use it.  Seriously.  Timbaland has sampled lots of things, but he mixes the tracks with his own creations, not just regurgitates the score.  Take stronger for instance...it's basically a Daft Punk song with Kanye rapping over it.  It was barely altered.  In the song Clock Strikes by Timbaland and Magoo they use the Knight Rider theme song electronic track but the beats themselves are Timbalands'.  It's a more creative way to use the sample as apposed to just using the full score.

The MAJORITY of Timbaland's work is ALL original work. So what if he sampled or remixed a few tracks. The same goes for Kanye West. His "Stronger" song sampled Daft Punk's original track but did you realize that Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" song contains samples from a song Edwin Birdsong did?

Hahaha, dude, Daft Punk has sampled tons of music..it's nothing new.  Have you heard all the versions, besides off the Discovery album, of that song..there's like 20 of them..only half of which I have.  Kanye took more than you think.  Why are you defending him so much?  Haha.. I actually have both songs back to back on a mix-cd I made and the transition from one to the other is hardly noticeable.  I love the song because of Daft Punk, not Kanye.  The bass line is most positively Daft Punk (which is actually a mix of Edwin Birdsong and Daft Punk...haha)...so what did he add of substance other than lyrics?

Kanyes outburst are more fueled by him being insecure and trying to proove himself. A real artist lets his body of work fight his battles.

Kanye West's album Graduation is scheduled to sell only 250K units in its second week - that's a  76% decline from last weeks sales. 
 
This isn't the first time that a top selling Def Jam artist had such a monumental drop in second week sales. Jay-Z's album Kingdom Come dropped almost 80% in second week sales. 
 
 
Also, JayZ's contract with DefJam expires in December. He claims that he wont renew it....sooooo, rumor has it that Kanye is after the spot.
