whabba's janky but flossy Q45

My first build thread!

OK so here's the story.
I'm Kyle and I'm 19, I know what you're thinking... Why is a kid this young into VIP? Shouldn't he be in a 240, drifting and most likely crashing somewhere? Well... The simple answer is that, in my reckoning, drifting will cost more in the long run than VIP will. If I'm wrong call me on it, but before you do, think loooong and hard about it.

So the car. It's a 1997 Q45, my favorite VIP platform. I got it on the 26th of june this year three days after my 19th birthday for a steal, $2000. There's a couple good reasons I would soon realize it was soo inexpensive.
1). It has 231,000 miles on it.
2). According to carfax it'd had NINE owners since '97.
3). It had been in a light accident
4). The front suspension was blown
5). No stereo
Those are what I knew before I bought the car, and that's ALOT.

Here's some pics to entertain you during this looong read

6). Bad wheels
Forum image

On the way home I found out a few more bad things about the car. I live in the small town of Niceville FL, the car is in the not so small town of Fairhope AL. So I had my very nice mother drive two and a half hours to pick the car up. I... I mean she... Paid the $2000 straight up cash. first problem.
7). No tag... Ok, I brought the one off my old car, no problem.

The next problem presented its self but took awhile to set in, so that one gets a number later.

8). Overheating....
Well this one was pretty bad. After about an hour of driving I hear an odd noise coming from the car. First thought is that it was something to do with the lack of stereo, some sort of interference... idk :pat:. I find out it's overheating when the steam comes... temp gauge is off the scale :pat:. the noise was the steam coming out of the over-flow tank, but I but you already guessed that. I stop off I-10 on the out skirts of Pensacola FL. Holy hell wtf did I just spend $2000 on?!? My mother and her powder blue CR-V and me and my big dumbass Q are on the side on the freaking interstate about to get hit by some retard gawking at us. We take the Honda to walmart an get some coolant, oven mitts, and a funnel. As I'm waiting for the car to cool down, I remember my buddy Erik lives nearby, so I call him praying he isn't working that day, he isn't, so he shows up, the car get filled back up with coolant, but now...

9). Bad starter.
Holy hell wtf did I just spend $2000 on?!? Erik and two of his friends rock the Q45 back and forth for about two or three minutes, the car finally turns over, starts, and we all head back to his house. pull in the drive way, cut the car off and pop the hood to check for leaks. No obvious leaks, so I attemt to start the car again doesn't take as long this time so maybe it's not as bad as I thought. Now my mother and I leave Pensacola an head down I-10 hoping that the over heating was an anomaly... It isn't. We make it almost all the way out of Crestview FL when i notice the temp gauge creepng up.:signdammit:. I pull into the Tom Thumb and pop the hood again... luckily I know some good people in Crestview, and they come to help. Btw it's night-time now. As my friends and i look into the engine bay with a cell phone light, we notice a puddle on the top of the radiator, now I atleast know why it's overheating now. Fill the car BACK up with coolant and my two car convoy are on the way home.

That journey took FOUR hours too long, Holy hell wtf did I just spend $2000 on?!?

The car is home for a coulpe days until I get it up on jack stands to check it out. now...

10). Bad steering rack...
This was pricey. My father is now involved in the story. while attepmting to take the bad unit out to replace it and the starter (which also was pricey), he accidentally rips the wires out of the steering servo...:signdammit:.

here's sme more pics to help you out some more

Dang thats def one of the most interesting starts to a project ive heard of! lol To be honest the car seems like a bad deal from the start but i just hope you dont give up on her! I got mine for 1500 with only 157k miles and just needs a few maintenance stuff done like ur starter! lol But id agree with VI IX to try and focus on the maintenance stuff that needs to b done despite how inticing goodies are! Goodluck with the build sir!

Age doesn't matter. I was 19 when I bought my ls430. The older dudes really won't look down on you, you just gotta let the car speak for itself.

As said, very interesting build start. Gonna be rad seeing it done though dude. Try to support legitimacy though ;)

As for age, I'm only 19 also. Age is only a number, not a judging factor.

being young i imagine your cash is limited so spend it wisely. we've lost a lot of nice projects to neglected maintenance. make it run good, then make it look good.

Even though I ordered wheels, on the maintenance side all I need to do to get it running is to drill out the hole I stripped in the thermostat housing and put in a heli-coil, then fill it up with coolant, then bleed the power steering.

They were about 1100 then refinshing was 300 and shipping was 90. It took like a month to get refinished which was about two weeks too long.

Dude that fake jp stuff is embarrassing. Vip is all about quality parts, your car would look 100x cleaner with out all that Chinese pleather "jp" stuff. Not to come off as a dick, but fake parts are generally frowned upon around here. Wheels look good though, get your ride height dialed and you'll be off to a good start.

Literally. Get some spacers man. In your situation it's the best and cheapest thing you can do to vastly improve its looks.

Good luck with the build. I had to change my entire PS system too, it sucks in these cars but overall they're beasts.

Not a big fan of spacers. But even though it's counterintuitive to the VIP style I'm not running a ton of camber, and hopefully the coils will go low enough that I'll tuck. so these wheels. Although not super aggressive will work for my purposes.

Nobody is a fan of spacers lol. But you should be even less of a fan of sunk wheels (like REALLY sunk). If you go low enough to tuck, you better have camber arms to remove all the natural camber and even with 0 degrees the wheels will still be sunk. Not hating on your choices just giving you my 2 cents.

no one, well maybe someone.. gets lucky on the first try on wheels. Especially when it is your first set going in this area of tuning. You have to start somewhere. Sometimes it is not just test fitting your homoboys wheels to see if they work or not. For me, no one around here did vip, so i could not test fit for shit. I bought what I liked. Had to do fender work to get them to fit while the fronts needed more lip or width or both. Being 19, he is off to a great start. When I was 19, we were sharing wheels on our cars. 17s in back steelies in front and tucking cause wtf was offset?

he has a fake jp badge, and I rock a Nissan Leaf Zero emissions badge on my car. I dont have cats, no mufflers. Its zero emissions on that car. You can say its gay like his badge.. but at least i can lay the shit out and not have to worry about cats, like all the other mofos with the same car have to in every other state.

I remember when juntion produce was an elitest thing around these parts a long time ago.. To me back in 03 everything was JP, whether it was actually Junction produce or not. Black swiming pools with the JP logo on the bottom and the JP Noburi hangin off entery ways of 6000sqft homes. For no fuckin reason other than it was fun. We didnt have a JP anything for shit on our cars.. But now it can be found at your local grocery:coolugh:

Got the cooling system leak free. Took the car to get aligned. Was so bad I was skerrtin on those bitches goin straight lol.

Attachment 3890
Got tires on wheels

Attachment 3891
Got the car driving for a couple hours until it overheated

Attachment 3892
Thought I fixed the problem. Until it overheated again the next day.

Also my steering wheel controls quit working (i.e. cruise control, horn, airbag) after a pop after I turned the wheel after the alignment.

VIP enthusiasts (unless Its just me) Pride themselves on the hardwork that goes into not only paying for legit parts, but keeping our beloved companies in business, through our business to them. Also representing that company on the vehicle. When a person sees a legit JP, Garson, K-Break anything, the first thing that comes to mind is "That person worked his ass off to obtain this" especially if its a hard to find part. I could tell at first glance with almost no inspection that those items are as fake as all the tits on Hollywood Blvd. This isn't the honda game, where you can rock fakes on fakes on fakes and get props. It's VIP. You pay to play.

This car definitely has potential. Keep it up, and take a few tips from elders. No one here is out to get you, only help you learn along the way.

Wait what? What does Hondas have to do with fake parts and props... How you figure?
In any genre of car enthusiasts you have the true enthusiast's/builders and fakers no one ever gives props for fake parts you just gotta do you ...whatever that "you" entails.
Pay to play IMO is only valid in some instances and examples you can't use that across the board if you disagree kouki monster has some rare expensive zip ties for sale lol

When he spoke on hondas, i think what he was trying to say in the honda game shit got so ridiculous that it became a looky loo game, not so much where you sourced the parts from, it got, specially late in the game, all about "looking fast"

It stop becoming a lets race and i will show you what i got, and i mean from the mAsses not from the true tuners,
Maybe the word commercialized would be good to use

Idk

Love a decent debate

The Honda shit here and most 240s are littered with fake everything, wheels, aero etc. and Kids are all about it.
The Pay to play was mainly aimed at buying legit parts. I'm sure all the fake JP stuff he got off ebay was a "too good to be true" price.

Ordered some 25mm Ichiba spacers because of my driver front wheel grinding on the coilover. A couple of days ago they came in, and today I got bored enough to test fit them.

The rears were just as bad.

This is what I found when i took off my rear wheel...

My poor wheel got this foot long piece of metal sheered off of it in the process

Also I checked the codes on the computer, and found out somebody must've taken out the CEL bulb because there were 7 error codes. So now i know that both knock sensors are bad and it's misfiring. Now I'm looking for a new engine, and I can't decide whether to go with another VH41DE or go JDM as fuck with a VQ30DET.

Alright so some shit's happened in the last couple months.
Drove the car for a couple weeks on the spacers, until one blew out on me while driving (slowly, thank Jesus)

Here's the carnage
Forum image
Forum image

Not too sure how long I drove like this, I had the sneaking suspicion that something was wrong, but had no idea that would've happened.

Then a few days later my power steering went out. Adding to the long list of things wrong with the original engine. Sooooo, I bought a new one. Pretty sure I got a good deal aswell.
Here it is just after I took it out of the truck.
Forum image
And here it is sitting in my garage.
Forum image
pretty happy with the purchase, It looks clean and the guy I bought it from seemed genuine.

Hopefully in the next few months I'll save enough monies to get the new engine put in the car.

Sorry but the fake JP stuff needs to go, It's better to have stock interior than fake products.... i cant really believe that after the time you have had this car and had it posted on this forum that it would still be in there =/.

Also maybe it is just me, but your tires look really beefy... maybe invest in a better size tire for your wheels. just my opinion.

I only keep the fake JP stuff cause no one around where I live knows any better, also I don't feel like buying real stuff while my car is in such disarray. Maybe after everything is fixed I'll splurge and buy some real stuff. And as far as tires go, I just wanted my speedo to be correct, simple as that.

Do your self a favor and do the knock sensors, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket and coil packs at a minimum while the engine is out. I might even say do the timing chain and all guides and tensioners as that is an engine out service. I just finished doing all the top end stuff and was kind of a bitch. To do my oil pan gasket, I have to drop the subframe.

I build race cars for a living. I will give you this advice. Stay the fuck off EBay. All you are doing is buying cheaply made knock off Chinese shit. I get it, you're young and want to build a car. Buying knock off products hurts a few things. 1: The companies that put the r&d into the original products. 2: You're pockets. Nothing is worse than buying the same thing over because it was made poorly. 3: Possibly someone else. There are numerous threads all over the place about Chinese made spacers and how they are designed. I have a very good friend who is a metallurgist. He actually did a lot of testing on one of these and it was scary. Listen to what people tell you. A lot of us have been around the block a few times.

I didn't buy eBay spacers. They were ichibas V2's that I bought from option auto salon. But I do hear what you're saying about eBay shit, and anything that directly affects the performance of my vehicle I buy a real brand name.

The car's fixed and running/sounding awesome, I havent had to put coolant in it the whole time I've had it back. Wonders having head gaskets will do. But the power steering pump went out again a couple weeks ago, should be fixed by the end of next week.

Just before the PS pump failed for the second time i painted my janky stockies, just a cheap rattle can silver job in my buddies backyard, but they came out pretty good.

Got me a job at a local shop, so hopefully in the next few months I'll have wheels again.

TO ALL WHO DISLIKE MY FAKE JP STUFF :
I took off the grill emblem cause i got sick of looking at it. But I'm still using the pillows cause nobody around where I lives knows any better, so what's it hurt? I'll buy real ones after I buy new wheels.

Here's an old photo that I love, with the spacers that I recently found out were cheap chinese crap. And no that's not me in the pic.

Ain't that a bitch? Be very careful about what you buy. Do some research on offsets. I'd love to see those in a steplip 19.

I actually researched and knew what I was doing this time. I'm not a huge fan of steplip, plus I already have 18" tires perfect for what I want the width to be.

My math skills are pretty on point. That is just the flat roll I had from my old set up. I have plenty of clearance for the suspension also.
